OPEN THREAD: Preseason Game #1 - Warriors vs Lakers

Yea , the graphic says tomorrow, but it's TONIGHT!

Warriors (W-L): 0-0 (preseason)

Lakers (W-L): 0-0 (preseason)

Warriors Roundtable: 9:30PM PST (FSN)

Tipoff: 10:00PM PST (FSN)

Wow, it's been such a long time since there was some real live Warriors action. At least this offseason was one month shorter than the previous years thanks to the playoff series versus the Mavs and Jazz. We start fresh this year with many new faces replacing some of the old and familiar. Many of the favorites from last year are back while a few others will now be with the team for the entire year.

Just like Don Nelson said in Training Camp: Day 3 Practice Video, "The first 2 games of the preseason are the most important of the season." Amen, sir. Amen. This game couldn't be more important. Heck even, GSoM friend, Dave, over at Blazers Edge thought enough of preseason games to write The Ten Commandments of Pre-Season. Here's the first commandment:

THOU SHALT NOT believe anything you read in glowing reports about returning players until thou hast seen it demonstrated with thine own eyes during the regular season...repeatedly. Everybody is talented in the off-season.

All kidding aside, I'm really excited just to see the new guys. Usually we do predictions, but that doesn't seem appropriate. So I'll give you few things I'm looking for today and the rest of the preseason. Feel free to share yours in the comments.

  • Is Belinelli's shot as good as advertised?
  • Can Stephane Lasme block and change shots in the paint?
  • Will I finally get to see Brandan Wright play after missing the Summer League with an injury?
  • Will Troy Hudson be able to run and gun with the Warriors to be an adequate backup to Baron?
  • Is Austin Croshere a hired hitman and will he take out Kobe this game?
  • Will Kosta Coast, or as Baron refers to him, 19, make the team?
  • Is all this talk about Notorious POB playing well for real?
  • Last but not least, should we extend Biedrins or wait until next summer?

Drop your comments before, during, and after the game in this open thread.

GO DUBS!

UPDATE: [Atma Brother #1] Make sure to check out what our friends at Lakers super-blog Forum Blue and Gold have to say about tonight's preseason festivities.

UPDATE2: Also see what Adam Lauridsen has to say about the preseason.

Focus on the attitude. Despite what I’ve written above, I think you can learn some things about a team from training camp. When a group comes in already focused and committed, it can only help them prepare for the season. The Warriors’ players have set the tone for the camp and nothing has knocked them off message.

UPDATE3:

Warriors Win! 111-110
Thanks to a last second shot by Troy Hudson!

Final Box Score

Stay tuned for the recap!

Awe ya bra-Hawaiian Style!
Shaka Bra!  The last time the Warriors were playing wasn't that long ago, but in reality, it seems like an eternity.  Sorry that some familiar faces are gone, but as many of you said a while back-MOVE ON.  Well, I have and can't wait to see our beloved Dubs start their quest for a Championship.

What better place to do so than in Hawaii.  I was in Kauai in July and sported a Dubs hat.  A local noticed it when I was in K-Mart looking for fishing gear.  He never knew who the Dubs were, but after watching the sea of gold on TV during the playoffs hearing how emphatic our fans were, he started to pay attention.  Speaking of paying attention, that's what I plan to do tonight at 10 with good ole Jim Barnett and Fitzy with a "Snapple" in one hand and a brew in the other.  Go Dubs, ya bra!!!

Warriors were 0-4 against the lakers
last year....Hopefully we do better against them this year.  Laker fans annoy me to no end...

by ThermoElectro on Oct 9, 2007 9:55 AM PDT reply actions

one reason
why i think tonight's game (i know it's pre-season, i KNOW) will be important for the season.  granted the lineups will be strange and constantly in flux throughout the game, but if we can get some boards against LA, which is not a great rebounding team, it will give us an idea of where we stand against the Utahs and Spurs'sss (?) of the league.

go warriors!

Warriors basketball is back!  Should be fun to watch all the new guys, I love this point of the season, everyone's potential is sky high.  Who knows if bellinelli, Wright, Lasme, Perovic, etc., will be stars or duds? it's so exciting.

but remember the best news:
If the Warriors do well in the pre-season, it shows just how good we are.  If they stink it up, well, hell, it's just the preseason, it doesn't mean anything! :D

while
Bucher is definitly one of the better writers, it is obvious that most of the writers and pundits are really not watching the games. People were taking shots at the Warriors for naming Jacks a captain, but anyone who watched the last 25 games of the year could clearly see he was a leader on that team.

by Nellieball on Oct 9, 2007 11:16 AM PDT reply actions

shots at stack jack
Really?  i haven't seen those anywhere...got a link?  I'd like to their reasoning behind knocking the move.

I will say, though, that it's a last-ditch attempt at getting him under control...maybe before getting T'd up and blowing our chances at a win, he'll see his captain's armband (or what have you) and think "hey wait, i'm a captain.  i'll channel my intensity for the good of the team!"

by GameSix on Oct 9, 2007 12:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Belinelli for Real?
Cannot wait to see how this guy excels in Nellie's system.  In Nellie's system, a guy like him only has to worry about making the shots, not creating them, because the pace is so fast and the ball is moving (or should be).  People also say he's got pretty good court vision.  What a pick.  I'm glad the Warriors did not just get some college star who already peaked.  Also read that Baron said POB was showing something.  We can only hope; coach always said you can't teach height.
Nothing better than "The City".

Computer games are nver accurate
because game players are much more fast paced than real players. Real players have to deal with tiredness, strategy, etc....while game players are mostly like, "Run up the court! Get it in the hole!" This is even more true in Live than in 2K.

Not a good start from MP
Harrington's scoring- ditto Belinelli- Kelena's doing a bit of everything, and POB's not getting embarrassed!

Pietrus could get hosed this year.  With Kelena, Belinelli, Jackson and even Barnes, he doesn't bring anything new to the court.  The combination of 3-pt shooting and rebounding is nice, but those other guys can all shoot and Kelena's doing his best JRich-impersonation so far.

Pietrus' chance of even contributing as much as he did last year boils down to whether or not Lasme or Wright earn the trust of Nellie to occupy a forward spot for 15+ minutes a game.  If they do, Pietrus could be gone by the trade deadline...

Oh BOY
I don't care where Wright was.  I wanted to see him play, but hey.  When we were down in the fourth, I almost smelled one of those close Laker losses.  But THUD came through.  My buddy predicted it in the time out and it happened.  Azi....good job my friend. props to POB.  I never would have thought it.  And Belinelli...nice D skillz, but quit taking unnecessary fade-aways.  Burke played well until the end when he tried to show off.

WE WOULD HAVE OWNED THEM IF WE PLAYED OUR STARTERS MORE THAN ONE QUARTER.  AND MONTA????

Those Laker fans, ugh. It was great to see THUD shut them all up! ahahahahah. And Biedrins always puts a smile on my face (no homo) when he gets off the bench and cheers after a game winning shot.

And lol, Kosta made me laugh... everyone got off the bench and ran to THUD, but Kosta stayed there with his fist in the air screaming "YEAHHH!!!!!!!".

Ahhhhhh. These moments are so heartwarming. It was great seeing the rookies go in that group celebration after the game winning shot, and seeing them being part of the family.

Way to go, especially young guys(Fantasy League?)
Great win, last shot too. Good to see O'bryant rebounding and playing some defense. If he keeps this up, he'll be the permanent backup Center and the team needs that desperately. Hudson needs to play well like he did and stay healthy but the guy didn't play much like a PG hey with only one assist. Azu might well make the guard rotation still one of the best in the nba. He has come out of nowhere and been real good. I stil lwant Monta to be the starting SG and he may well leave if he doesn't when it is time to be resigned. He has star potential and I don't want to see him go.

Also, what is happening with fantasy league? Two years ago we played on yahoo but no talk of it now. I'll make one or two leagues up if guys are willing to join. Come and talk to us on goldenstwarriors.com and we'll get fantasy league going!

Thanks again for all the good work guys!

you guys are getting way too excited over this.
The fact that it was this close made me kinda disappointed. Of course I am happy the warriors won but this lakers team was missing 2 starters and Kwame Brown. Who knows what would have happened if Walton and Odom were playing even if it was only for 20 minutes.

by saintdee on Oct 10, 2007 1:31 AM PDT reply actions

Ummmm...
And how many minutes did Baron play? Jack? Harrington? Biedrins? Monta?

They made their big runs with our second and third units on the floor -- Cro, Burke, Hudson, et al. WIth even one or two starters in, we absolutely owned them.

Yeah, it's a preseason game. I think the kids are aware of that. Too excited? What are fans supposed to do in a game thread? Quietly rustle their stat sheets?
