RECAP: Warriors 104, Pistons 111 - Not Again!
Final Boxscore

Rebounding with our eyes closed.
We are now the proud fans of the worst team in the NBA (record wise). Seattle and Minnesota won today, making the Warriors the only winless team in the league. The clock has struck 12 and Cinderella is officially back to wearing rags, cleaning the floors, and practicing some free throws! Frustrating doesn't begin to describe this game. Arrrgh. Can the Warriors play a complete game? Can they consistently make the necessary in-game adjustments? Can they make some free throws? Can they play well in the 4th quarter? Can they win a game?
It's too bad that in our first ever ticket giveaway the Warriors lose: 0-1 on GSoM Ticket Giveaway Nights. By the way, BobbyLeeHurt, I hope you had fun at the game with the tickets you won even though the Dubs lost. Well, in the spirit of our GSoM Pop Quiz let's take another quiz based on tonight's numbers (no prize given this time).
Question 1: How many points did the Warriors score in the 2nd half?
Answer: Oh great question FJ! 21 points in the 3rd quarter plus 19 points in the 4th quarter equals 40 total points in the 2nd half. I didn't even have to break out the calculator for that one. Wait a second, 40 points in the 2nd half? That would average 80 points in an entire game. Heck, we scored 40 points in the first quarter alone! How did that happen?
I guess that leads to...
Question 2: What was the Warriors' 3pt shooting percentage in the 2nd half?
Answer: Wow, another excellent question. The Warriors were 13-34 overall from 3, good for 38%. In the first half, the Warriors were on fire though going 8-13 from 3. 13 minus 8, 34 minus 13. Aha! The Warriors were 5-21 in the 2nd half from the land of plenty, a very ugly 24%. Yuck. But that doesn't make sense, why did they take so many more 3's and at the same time miss so many? The next question should help you understand.

Question 3:What kind of defense did the Pistons play that gave the Warriors fits?
Answer: Geez, how do you come up with these great questions? I'd call that defense a 3-2 zone. Boy did that kill the Warriors offense. They went from running, running, and running some more to stagnant. Here's the definition of stagnant
Detroit got into that zone defense in the 3rd quarter and immediately slowed the game down. The Warriors looked confused out there as they were content to just sit back and shoot 3's. These weren't created off drives but rather the ball moving around the perimeter. It wound up with guys just standing around the 3 point arc waiting for a pass. Again, no movement, lots of standing. They didn't necessarily take bad shots, they had open looks at 3's. It's just that when you're not hitting them, you have to attack the middle of the zone and get everyone on offense moving around. Detroit was content to let the Warriors take a bunch of 3's, then clog the lane for the defensive rebound and set up their half court offense. They slowed the game down and played their style of play.
But the Warriors adjusted at the start of the 4th quarter sending BD into the middle of the zone to attack. It was a great adjustment that sent the lead back to 10. But Detroit made another adjustment in their zone to collapse on the middle and the Warriors were back to shooting more and more 3's or long 2's. Game over.

Question 4: What did the Warriors shoot from the line?
Answer: They shot 13-21 or 62%. This is even with Andris Biedrins shooting 6-6. He made nearly half the free throws! When Biedrins shoots that well from the line, the free throw percentage should at least be in the 80's. Someone take free throw lessons from Biedrins! Haha. So, who were the culprits tonight? Monta Ellis (2-4) - MIP to MIA. Baron Davis (1-2) - how do you handle the ball that much and not get more than 2 free throws? Brandan Wright (1-4) - at least he was active in the middle.
I'd like to make a simple request to Warriors fans while the Warriors are shooting free throws. Let's pretend we're in a library and be quiet. Let's be loud when the other team is shooting free throws, quiet when the Warriors are.

Not a lot the Warriors could do to stop Rasheed
Question 5: What did the Pistons shoot from the field?
Answer: They were 44-83, good for 53%. Not going to win too many games when you shoot 41% and the opposing team shoots 53%.
Final Question: Add up all the numbers in answers 1-5, divide 0 by that number and you'll have a surprise.
Answer: 40 + 24 + 32 + 62 + 53 = 211
0 / 211 = 0. The number of Warriors wins this year.
Miscellaneous thoughts
- It was good to see Brandan Wright get 6 minutes of burn tonight and show he's ready to play if called upon. He snatched 4 rebounds, 3 offensive and had one nice putback dunk. On defense he stripped Rasheed (I think it was) on the block and caused problems with his length.
- Biedrins looked good tonight. He was getting open in the lane for guards to dump the ball off to him for easy shots. He was cutting to the open spots in the lane. Although he didn't convert at his usual 60%, I liked seeing him more involved in the offense finishing with 18 points (6-6 free throws!) and 11 boards. Good work.
- Tonight in the first half, the Warriors played like the Warriors of last year's amazing run. They were getting steals, running out on the break, blocking shots and causing chaos for Detroit. The Warriors just flew up and down the court even getting fast break layups off made buckets. That was good to see again.
- Marco looks lost and like he doesn't belong on the court. That summer league performance feels like a looooong loooong time ago.
- Jason Maxiell is a strong, strong man. 14 points, 14 boards, and a vicious dunk. He's not just a Danny Fortson clone, the guy is a powerful learper.
- Rasheed Wallace took over in the 4th. Perhaps he was motivated by the Need for Sheed /GSOM sign that Tony.psd put together. He was a big reason for the Pistons 9-0 4th quarter run and comeback. No Chauncey and no McDyess tonight, no problem. Just give it to the big man.

Boom Dizzle. 29 points on 12-24 shooting. He was dynamite in the 1st quarter and couldn't miss. The rest of the game he was solid, though I wish he took over in the 4th. He also dropped 10 assists. One problem tonight, he played 45 minutes and the Warriors still lost. Not a good sign for the long season.

...Where the HELL was Brandan Wright?
I keep saying it, this team isn't suited for the playoffs. Not with our offseason. Trading JRich for the future is a move benefitting the future, not the present. We are basically wasting Baron's prime years and i think he knows it too. JAX comes back in 2 games, is he going to save us? Probably not, we're going to need another playmaking all-star to help our team out to shoulder the load Baron takes on every night. One major leg injury and hello Number One Overall Pick.
I will now start contemplating my Trade Baron for picks and expirings now while we still can thread.

No McDyess and No Billups
The missing Jack excuse doesn't work when the other team is on the road on the 2nd of a back to back and missing 2 starters, including arguably the MVP of their team. This Warriors team is poor at executing down the stretch, poor in hoops IQ, and too young and inexperienced to be a serious winning team in the NBA.
This is the worst team in the NBA right now. They're giving up 118 points per game and letting the opposing team shoot better than 50% from the field, by far the worst in the league
The coach ain't the problem. This roster is just bad and has been vastly overrated and overhyped, but I can't really blame the players. They were given unrealistic expectations and put it an unrealistic situation.
Mullin and Rowell did nothing to improve this roster for THIS season. Sorry the Kosta signing aint' cutting it.
It's time for some trades folks. Bring in some experienced veterans who know how to win or else this team is headed back to the lottery and Nellie's probably headed back to Hawaii.
Until they spend some money for some players that will help win NOW, Cohan and crew are just stealing money from the fans this year. Hey if this team is built to win in 3 years and if this organization is content to just save money right now to build for this mythically bright future which I don't buy or trust they can achieve when Nellie's retired, how about I save my money right now and just hold off on giving it to you till 3 years from now?
Don't get it twisted this franchise isn't committed to winning right now, they're only committed to reaping in high profit margins, which are attributable to their bait and switch sales tactics from last year's playoffs where you could only buy playoff tickets if you signed up for season tickets. What a scam.
Props to my man FJ though- he nailed it in his analysis of the game with this recap.

exactly
A. Sell everything of value for picks and exprings and build around AB and Wright (note i excluded Marco and Monta, because they mind be needed to entice other teams to take our crap)
B. Use the damn TPE and trade some youth for tested veterans. Nay, scratch that, All-Star veteran players. Artest and even Kurt Thomas would help out a lot right now. But no, we opted for Thud and Cro. We're getting EXACTLY what we paid for.
I'm leading more towards option A. I say this because there seems to be no veteran out there worth our young players. There is no KG, or Dwight Howard on the Market who would help us out (I'm only thinking about All-Star Big men, and no i'm not considering JO'Neal). We're better off getting our Superstar or All-Star player through the draft. If we trade Baron, our best commodity, we are in a position to have the worst record in the league. If we could give Baron away to a team that needs a pg and has the right amount of draft picks and expiring contracts we'd have a lottery pick and another first rounder somewhere in the draft. Expirings don't hurt either.
I just want the warriors to choose one direction, the way we are right now hovers somewhere inbetween option A and option B. It has lead us to our current 0-6 record. After awhile you just need to try something new.
Now the warriors aren't as bad as their 0-6 record indicates, but at full strength they aren't deep playoff material either. And what's the point in the NBA? Championships (unstoppable) baby. You have to ask yourself, do i want to watch this team be a 34-44 win team, or a 56-66 win team in a few years? Now, neither is guaranteed, especially going young, but with the Warriors running out of straws to pluck, maybe you just have to start over and have faith that this time is the last time.

Marco...
I think this is a bit unfair. He only played something like two, three minutes last night, and while he did committ a turnover, it was on a play that he should've tried to make, the snap pass inside to Biedrins cutting, and Andris almost came up with the ball. It was, as Jim Barnett would often say last year, an error of agression.
He also missed a leaning jumper he took, but that's his style, I'm not concerned about him twisting and leaning on his shots, really.
I don't think we can fairly judge him until he gets more consistant burn. It's like being a pinch hitter in baseball, it's damn hard to come off the bench once every two games and get graded on a few minutes of play, ya know?

I have to agree...
Although I can't argue that he doesn't look like he belongs out there because nobody passes him the ball. The only time he gets passed the ball was... well when Bookie passed him the ball.
Plus give me a break, he's in for 4 minutes, what does Don Nelson expect him to do in 4 minutes? How many minutes did Ellis play last night and what was his stats 2-4 from the field and 1 or 2 rebounds? Marco is a shooter and if they ever expect him to get off to any kind of start, NELSON has to give him a chance to get in a groove. The only game that he was given that chance was against the Jazz in the 4th quarter when it didn't matter, when he hit 2 threes in a row. Then nobody passed him the ball for the rest of the quarter. Nice...

Marco's Minutes
The comment was based on his play last night. In his 4.5 minutes he looked lost and was unproductive. You have to do more than just shoot on Nellie's team. He's got to play some D, grab some boards, make hustle plays. I don't see those happening right now. Also the pass to AB was forced. He's not a passer. That was AB's fault for stopping when he should have kept running, but that doesn't mean Marco should have thrown it into traffic.
How long did you want Nellie to play a liability on defense if he's not contributing on the offensive end? 8 minutes, 10 minutes? What's a good number? How many minutes does he deserve and who are you sitting so that he can play?
Also, do you agree that minutes have to be earned? Other than being a first rounder and lighting up the summer league, has Marco earned the right to play? What has he done?

You don't consider Ellis a defensive liability?
25 minutes
2-4 from the field
2-4 from the line
2 boards
1 Turnover
Without even looking at the box score from last night, but just watching the game, Ellis didn't do enough to warrant his playing time of 25 minutes off the bench. Being the MIP, even from an offense only standpoint, should be putting up better numbers, especially since he hasn't been getting steals or doing anything on the defensive end... 2 boards in 25 minutes, nice.
Earning minutes? I think he kind of has to be out there in games playing to earn those minutes? What do you think? You think he earns minutes sitting on the bench cheering his team on? If I have to go back and look at what positives he brought to the games he's played in the regular season I will, but I'm sure you remember when he went in for 7.5 minutes in the Jazz game and hit two 3's right off the bench, he had some assists in the clippers game and I honestly forget when he hit the other three he got in the corner... all this being in limited minutes on a very short leash.
Would you agree that if someone out there, regardless of their status last year, is playing like crap, they should be taken out of the game? Or does Nelson just leave that person in the game for 20+ minutes doing nothing on both ends? Well Nelson picks and chooses his favorites hoping that they do something, but unfortunately for the warriors last night, Ellis was that favorite that was extremely unproductive and was both an offensive and defensive liability.

That may be so...
Watching Marco in these six games, here's all I know I can say about him.
-he has the potential to be a very good shooter
-he is a good ballhandler and has shown some very crisp passes off the dribble
-his defense, while not spectacular, has been no worse than what Ellis has been showing me thus far

I agree with your points that you had at the end
And I am confused about what your point was when you say if he gets the ball in a bad position, that he's not going to score. Do you mean like the time when he got a shitty pass against the clippers broke down Ruben Patterson... got to the rim and got the fattest no call on Kaman b/c it would have been his 4th? If you are inferring some kind of comparison of Ellis to Marco then we're talking day and night. Marco would be hard pressed to force any issue in any situation, while Ellis just tries to force his way into any opening that may or may not be there with a total disregard for anyone who will be waiting for him at the rim to block his shot. Its a give and take with those two players, but to compare them on offense is a little off base. The only way they can be compared if they were given equal minutes, but that won't be happening any time soon.

i think its early to panic
there are some positives:
baron's last couple of games have been very strong,
al looks sharp, hitting from a variety of areas and being aggressive going to the hoop,
ka is pretty darn consistent, grabbing boards, shooting,
overall, they're slowly starting to accelerate. they just have to be able to keep up the momentum the whole game.

Couple good things
-Monta Ellis didn't get many Turnovers last night. He also has been officially neutered as he is driving and kicking instead of going to the basket. This is a give and take scenario with him and I wonder how long it will last.
-About time Brandan Wright got some time. He made a difference out there on the boards. His length bothers people and I like to see when we're on the boards that his arms are at least 1/2 a foot over everyone else's. The putback dunk was nice, but merely canceled out his misses at the line, but overall a good showing.
-In a game when the other team suckered us into shooting 3 point shots for an entire half, why not utilize our shooters? Monta was out there for too long and was no threat from outside. If you're not going to penetrate the zone with Monta, this is the exact time that you should (but probably won't ever) bring out the snipers and just let them have a go. The times when Wallace was out of the game, you could have had a number of different combinations out there: Baron, Belinelli, Bookie, Croshere, Harrington just to name a few people who can hit the three.
Brutal loss, but I wasn't surprised as I saw the downfall coming by the 4th. The zone defense sucked all the energy out of Oracle Arena and the warriors. They were walking the ball up for almost the entire second half and with the hot scoring first half, it was just a matter of time before they were cooled off. Biedrins played well, Wright showed he can contribute, and now I just wish that Nelson would realize that there are other people who can help the team out that are sitting on the end of the bench,

the solution
When the other team is building momentum, and we would need a bucket, Stephen Jackson was the one to attack the bucket and draw a foul, knock down some FT's, stem the tide. (Richardson was the guy who'd launch a few more 3's and pray for the best. Kinda like why people don't like Belinelli).
Maybe season ticket holders can petition David Stern for a pro-rated 7 game refund of the cost of tickets since he issue the suspension?

I'll wait to see how much improvement Jack brings on D, but I expect it to be noticeable.
The rotation should sort itself out as well, less of this Barnes-as-backup-PF:
End of Q1, Baron and Biedrins the first to sit; Ellis and POB off the bench. Jack handles the rock and initiates the offense
A few minutes into Q2, Harrington and Jack sit, Wright and Barnes in. Ellis and Barnes split point duties.
Halfway into Q2, Baron return, Buike out. Ellis to SG.
Play the rest of quarter by ear. Second half should mimic it.

Here is the two scenarios I see
- Nelson tells Mully, " I can't win with this team as it's constituted right now." Just like last year when Mullin made the trade.
- Nelson retires because, " I'm obviously not the one for the job." As he did in NY and Dallas.
