OPEN THREAD: Game #8- Warriors @ Raptors- Jack's Back

craptor-breakfast.jpg

Warriors (W-L): 1-6

Raptors (W-L): 5-4

Time: 10:00am PST

Radio: KNBR 1050

Yes Sundays in November are for football, but this Sunday the Warriors head to Toronto, Canda to take on the likes of Bargnani, Calderon, Garbajosa, Kapono, Moon, and Nesterovic. (You gotta hand it to these guys from all the cool names.)

The bad news is that the Warriors haven't won a game away from Roaracle yet this season- actually it's kind of hard to do that when you only have 1 win. But the good news is that for the first time this season I can say that the Warriors are vying for their first win streak! Here's 3 things I'd love to see (via the boxscore and highlights) and hear on the radio this Sunday morning:

  • Jack Playing 48 minutes: Okay, okay Stephen Jackson doesn't need to play the entire game, but seriously right now he's by far the most rested and healthy Warrior starter. He is instantly going to improve this Warriors defense. At the very least it's going to go from historically atrocious to just atrocious. On offense he's going to give the Warriors another savvy creator which should take a ton of pressure off Baron and allow Nellie to rest the Boss some more.

Since we're on the topic of Jack I want to highly recommend checking out Scott Ostler's piece for SFGate titled Warriors Really Need Cap'n Jack. The piece challenges all the haters across the NBA landscape for questioning his captaincy and highlights how his hoops IQ and LQ are highly regarded by Nellie and his previous and current teammates

  • Hold the Raptors to Double Digits: This isn't necessarily required to get this W either, but I would LOVE to see the Warriors finally hold an opponent to under 100 points. With their best man defender back in action for the first time this season there's no better time than now to pull off this awesome defensive feat (well it's awesome for this team). The Toronto Raptors are scoring just a shade under one-triple-o this season, so it's going to be a challenge, but on football Sunday maybe the Dubs will show some football toughness.

  • Kick this Road Trip Off Right: Let's face it folks, the Warriors are beginning a somewhat brutal East Coast road trip this Sunday featuring two pairs of back-to-back games. It'll be a miracle if the Warriors go 5-0 on trip, a good trip back East if they can 4-1 or 3-2, a bad visit if they go 2-3, and a horrific one if they go 1-4 or the dreadful Big 0 Tires. If the Warriors come back home on November 26th at 2-10 or even 1-11 it's going to be... well, let's not go there.

Since this game isn't televised in the Bay Area (unless you forked over the dough for the admittedly reasonably priced NBA League Pass) we've enlisted some of our friends from HoopAddict.com and RaptorsHQ.com to help us put together a phat recap for your Sunday reading pleasure. We can't thank them enough for their help. Please take a few minutes out of your day to sing O Canada and check out their respective sites.

Predictions:

  • Warriors by 1
  • New Warrior D.J. Mbenga blocks 3 shots faster than you can say Adonal Foyle
  • Jason Kapono doubles his season scoring average
  • Andris Biedrins notches a double-double and plays solid D
  • Jamario Moon has a career game
  • The Warriors get twice as many blocks as the Craptors
  • Chris Bosh goes for 20-10

Throw up that W!

It's kind of a random game to be on Latvian TV? Why, just because of Andris?

Hey Lat We N Trash ... thanks for being part of our site. How big are the Warriors out there or are you guys just rooting for Biens? Do a lot of you come to our site?

Several ...
Several Latvians come here on regular basis ... Apart from me, I know at least 4 more + some 2 guy's I've seen here.

I registered here just some week ago but I've been reading this blog since beginning of last season.

Hey YaoButtaMing
tnx for tnx
reason why i m here of course is because of AB -but it is not so simple -he is best payed latvian sportsman allaroundtheworld -so that's natural
-but here are some more reasons -i m totally basketball fan -i was watching games where AB was playing even then when nobody didn't knew about him as a player (i mean out of team) -and since then i m following hes career
-that's about me
what's about others
i know here are some 4 or 5 registred guys from Lv but personally i dunno no 1 of them
of course in Latvia are enough (for small country) NBA fans but W's till last season weren't the team in which bandwagon you wanna be without some special reason
anyway -i have feeling that this site is pretty popular between latvian people who interesting about AB and Warriors -sometimes i think some stuff what came in local sport media about AB or team is based on thoughts and opinion written here (just a feeling) -not as citation -i mean this place is full of qualitative info and basketball intelligent people analyses

why i think so -because if you wanna find something about warriors by searching in google -yo'll find this site and if yo'll find GSOM once yo'll came back time after time after time even without registration -just to get info
reason is simple -this is best fan blogs i've ever seen -very profesional and with cool community

P.S. -sorry for late answer -i wasn't watching game @ home

prediction
They are blessed with awesome talent. They don't play D and get punished for it. I've seen a couple of their games this year and they run, run and run. If we don't get back after EVERY shot... both missed and made... they'll run us out of the building. Davis will look to post up TJ when they are forced to set up more that most other PGs will. Force him to shoot from outside... only 24% from 3 so far. Harrington is a great scorer, Ellis looks to drive every time, Azubuike is a great surprise for them at 17 ppg and 13 ppg from Beidrins is nuts. Everyone had boners for Belinelli this summer... except for Nellie. He hasn't gotten much playing time yet. Don't let their 1 - 6 record fool you... had we played those same teams... we'd likely be the same. If we don't shoot well they'll kill us. Much better than people think they are. If we were away, I'd say loss. Because the Raps are at home, it'll be close. If I were to bet... loss this time. Prove me wrong Raps!!!!!

Man, noon tomorrow?
Too early, I may just have to pick it up at halftime.

And, no, don't you start saying that DJ Mbenga is even in the same LEAGUE as Adonal Foyle. Starting is bad. Stopping is good.

Jack
Let's not forget that Jackson will probably need some time to get back into the flow of things.  He still may be a little behind on game shape.
I pray i never have to use a gun again.

I hope...
Jackson goes nuts tomorrow, just not too nuts.  I'd rather not see him suspended again.

My prediction:
Harrington goes for a double-double, and the Warriors by 5.

Prediction
I think the scores will be close at half-time with Chris Bosh killing us with 25 and 10 by the end of the game and Kapono and the rest shooting threes. Then, I am hoping POB will make a big 3rd quarter impact as he did against the Clippers with Harrington and Jackson both scoring 20 points and BD dishing out 12+ assists.
Sadly, Sky Sports (the main channel who shows NBA games in the UK) don't show games until after the NFL season ends. I have to rely on Channel 5 showing 1 game a week in the middle of the night until then but when Sky start showing games again, they show one on Saturday morning (a a full repeat of a Friday Night game) and one on Sunday evening at 6.00PM and they would have shown this one had it been on after the NFL season ends.

Kapono
isn't he another Warrior Killer? I predict at least 25 for Kapono and 28 and 13 for Bosh. Jack will have a solid 18 with 6 rebounds and 8 assists, and Warriors win by 8
Ronald Reagan was a jerk.

They are
also weak inside specially Nestorovic is doubtful to play due to sprained right ankle. They have to watch for Moon though.

Like the Dubs, they are also perimeter shooters and they are also shooting poorly. Dubs 46.0% and the Raptors 44.2% from the field. But if the last game is an indicator our defense is getting tighter allowing an opteam to 105 pts from 118 pts and having a rebounding edge of + 9.

Game time in 10 mins. Warriors by 10 pts.

Go Dubs!

Lineup
Baron, Azubuike, Jackson, Harrington, Biedrins

This is our best lineup, IMO, and it will be fun to see how they perform.

Thus far all our points are from layups. The interior passing in the paint and attacking the rim has been excellent.

Raps struggling from the field, but a couple chippy fouls helped them.

Azubuike for 3p.

Odd game. We're up and we're seemingly getting anything we want offensively inside. Biedrins is cleaning the glass.

Yet it seems like we should be up alot more. I hope we can put the hammer down.

Jackson drew Bosh on a switch in the paint; on the post up Jack pulled the chair out from him and Bosh fell down/slipped. Never gets old.

Warriors up 5 near the end of the first.

Ford is the only raptor in any sort of rhythm.

Bargnani with 2 fouls in about one and a half minutes.

Seriously, POB and Biedrins should have their way inside.

Three charges (2 on Ellis, one on SpecialK)

From what I can tell: one each on Ellis and SpecialK were Delfino semi-flops that could go either way.

The last one on Ellis he was given the ball in an awkward spot where he had to keep going and Delfino was in position. That was not his fault, the pass should have came earlier or elsewhere.

Bad sequence of events
BD drove hard and Bosh swatted it away. Raps brought the ball down and rotated it well with Bosh making a good swing pass to Moon. Jamario hits the trey. Raps up by 1. Timeout Warriors.

hrm
TJ Ford is destroying us and our offense is missing a beat

I'm not sure what the answer is- he's blown by Baron and Pietrus already. ELlis has the speed, but I don't know if I trust him with that assignment. He'd probably rack up a fouls and/or lose Ford.

Jackson took a turn on him and Ford missed a J, we'll see what Nellie does to adjust.

Our offense needs to get on track. If it werne't for some momentum killing turnovers we'd have blown them away, but we let them hang around and now it's our turn to get back.

I noticed that too
The Warriors got really lucky, the Raptors missed a lot of open shots and the Warriors missed a lot of free throws. Although, it's entirely his fault that he let Monta bring the ball up in an intentional foul situation. That's an automatic 1 or 0-2 in a pressure situation.

IMPORTANT: Minutes
With a back to back, it's gonna be important to look at minutes:

Baron down to 36 is progress.
Al and Biedrins with 34 each is fine for them, healthy young legs.

Most worrisome is Jackson with 41 minutes in his first game back- i hope he has something left in the tank.

For tomorrow's game, the Knicks are a horrible 3P shooting team; their best dude is probably Q-Rich, but he, Crawford, and their odd assortment of guards are streaky and for the most part, not th at good from the outside.

That's to  our advantage since we will have to trap hard on Curry/Randolph, poor passers but dominating interior forces.

Neither plays a lick of defense; David Lee is beter but not a shotblocker and h e's their first big off the bench. There won't be a Jamario Moon swatting shots or a Delfino drawing charges (well maybe Balkman).

The offense should have its way inside and our bigs will need to put their work in. POB will definitely play tomorrow since Curry/Randolph will punish Al/Cro/biedrins.

Baron's Ego
Is it just me, or was baron forgetting about his team for a stretch betw. the 2nd & 3rd quarters?

He does that a lot.  When his opposite number starts going off, he tries to upstage him.  We almost lost the game cuz of that.

THIS IS OOOAKLAND!!!

yes
But this is his greatest strength and his greatest weakness

Sometimes he will try to match 3p for 3P or dunk for dunk and ignore his team or turn it over

However as we saw today, after ford went off in the 3rd, Baron's play was critical to our final push, hitting a layup and then a 3P to pull us closer

In the end we will live or die on his play, as all teams do with their superstars (or at least teams that only have one)

I think that'll be the main reason the DUBs
Will be the #1 draw in the road arenas.

"An entertaining game + a free ___ (fill in the blank) guaranteed.  Shoot, I'm in!"  Anonymous NBA fan who decides to catch a warriors road game.

Best duo since...
