Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

OPEN THREAD: Game #10 - Warriors @ Celtics

Warriors (W-L): 3-6

Celtics (W-L): 8-1

Vegas Odds Celtics by 9.5 (Source: Yahoo)

Time: 4:30 PM PST (FSN Bay Area)

Clearly, the quintessential Warriors fan had evolved in recent years. Rising from the bottom scraps NBA, the Warriors of recent years (or rather, year) have amazed, shocked, and baffled fans of the Warriors and the NBA to no end. And not just in a good way.

Let's face it. We are one of the most volatile teams in the league. No one really knows when the Warriors are going to implode or erupt. (Least of all Warriors fans!) All I know is when we do decide to get together and play as a team, the mighty have fallen in our wake. Last season we claimed victories over giants like Detroit, Utah, San Antonio, Phoenix and I'm pretty we even got a few against the Dallas Mavericks. I'll have to check that one out for sure. *Insert annoying smirk here.*

So I ask you. "Why not Boston?!" And I know your answers. "Garnett. Pierce. Allen. Away game. Best record in the NBA." Compelling points indeed.

Honestly, I have no answer. Boston has been stomping the league with its incredible trio and has so far lived up to every bit of hype garnered in the offseason. I know that we have a team capable of winning, but a lot of things have to go right. They have a tremendous amount of weapons to contain, and we're going to need to make a solid attempt to crash the boards, run plays that give us smarter shots, and (dear god) MAKE OUR FREE THROWS to even stand a chance in tonight's contest.

death-star-1

Now I know how Luke felt.

Keep your fingers crossed tonight Warriors Nation. We're trying to catch a bus to Upset City.

Predictions: Thanks for the reminder semarubaka!

1) Garnett steps all over Andris like Mario over so many Koopa Troopas.
2) Baron posterizes KG; Boston fans respond by hurling clam chowder.
3) Ray Allen uses the word "wicked" in an argument with the refs.
4) Warriors by 1.

GET `EM WARRIORS!

Be sure to stop by and show some love to our SB Nation friends at Green Bandwagon to get a Celtics point of view on tonight's events.

Update (Fantasy Junkie): Boxscore (NBA.com)

Update 2 (Atma Brother #1): Warriors lose a "close" one in Boston 82-105.

Stay tuned for the recap...

free throws + swarming defense
we played the swarming defense last night and got away with missing a bunch of free throws since the knicks are, well, the knicks. playing the swarming defense will not be enough tonight. it will keep us in the game, but the game will be much closer tonight so the free throws will be critical.

attack the rim
mantra for this season  -
  • anyway here's my opening play: BD drives on the Celts abusing their PGs & drawing KG then dishes to AB for a dunk
  • next play reeeeeeepeat
  • next play ....
genius huh?

should be fun to watch

interesting thing about Dubs fans
is that because of the team's bipolar tendencies, it's kept us humbled unlike our so-cal neighbors who were spoiled with arguably the greatest center ever and his HoFamer sidekick for many years.

i know if we ever reached that level of success where titles are expected and making the playoffs are mere technicality and i'm sitting in the arena next to some shmuck rocking a Davis jersey but wearing shades and talking on his cell phone not even watching the game, i WILL slug him.

say hello to your second loss of the season KG!

keys to the game
  1. Defensive rotations - When KG gets the ball in the post, they're going to have to aggressively double-team him.  At the same time, they're going to have to have rotate quickly, to not leave Pierce or Allen with wide open 3's.
  2. Free throws - The Celtics are too good for the Warriors to leave a lot of points at the line.  They're going to need to shoot at least in the mid or high 70% range to have a chance.
  3. Steals - Steals lead to fast breaks, which the Warriors rely heavily on.  They don't have much of a halfcourt set, other than posting up players like Baron and Jack, when there's a mismatch.  If they can play aggressive D like last game, and get a bunch of steals, it will really put pressure on the Celtics.

by EternalWarriorsOptimist on Nov 21, 2007 12:54 PM PST reply actions

I might be insane
but I think the Dubs have a shot to win this game. The Celts have yet to play a team that moves as quickly as the Warriors and, even though I like Rondo, BD should devour him all game long. KG is, of course, KG and I have no idea how the Warriors deal with him, but Jax and Pietrus can molest and bother  Pierce & Jesus Shuttleworth. An upset isn't out of the question, right? Or am I drinking the Kool-Aid?

by Tenorca on Nov 21, 2007 1:02 PM PST reply actions

We could win this
No, seriously.  THe key is Capt Jack.

I think Capt. Jack can cover Pierce one on one.  I also think BD can take Allen.  We can gang cover KG.  If we can hold 2 of the 3 to 5 below their avg, we might pull off the upset.

Oh and BD + Jax gotta score at least 55.

this is going to be a tough one. I just hope Biedrins doesn't get into foul trouble like last night and that Pietrus can keep up last night's performance.

I agree...
Croshere has been looking pretty good, and I am glad that the Warriors picked him up during the offseason.  I hope POB gets in on the action too.  I think that good games for Biedrins, Croshere, and POB may be crucial for a win (like the Clippers game).

My prediction:
Rajon Rondo becomes the new warriors killer...

by ThermoElectro on Nov 21, 2007 2:07 PM PST reply actions

wins are a comin'
look our perimeter guys are just as good as any.  Our real weakness is a guy like boozer or tim duncan  that kills us in the post.  Garnett is NOT that guy.  yeah he fills up a stat sheet and can shoot and rebound and play D.  but he doesn't have that power post game that absolutely kills us just like the mavs don't have that.  with that being said if BD outplays the little kid playing pg for boston, and our fifth guy outplays perkins their center we're definitely ready to win this game.  prediction a 7 point win.

by bioecon on Nov 21, 2007 2:46 PM PST reply actions

I agree...
...with the above sentiment. I think that if Jack can cover Pierce, we have a shot. Garnett isn't a bruiser, per se, and won't force Biedrins into the deep low post like Boozer does, rathger,. the challenge will be for Biedrins to come out on KG and keep him from dicing up the post with his passing.

They cannot
limit all three, so I suppose, they will concentrate more on Pierce and Allen and try to bring out KG then it's our ball game. If they will be active on their defense like they did last night, and the bench will continue to contribute, the Dubs by 7.

Go Dubs!

iono wut to say about him. POB looks better than DJ. I dont mean a superstar like Dwight Howard but a guy who is good at guarding big guys and getting rebounds, well at least help Biedrins out! A guys who can do the dirty work, like Milsap or Turiaf or Varejao!

I think its POB time, to guard KG!

Is Mbenga Foyle 1.2? O.8? Based on my limited observation he's Foyle 1.2 because of his length. But he's an abomination on offense.

Monta wouldn't have tried the Ally-oop
to Foyle. Then again, that's the last one Mbenga is likely to get in traffic.

But, Foyle may have converted the other one. No way Foyle makes that 12 footer. Then again, I was in shock that Mbenga made it.

lucky to be close at half
Baron's not finishing drives, we're taking mostly contested outside shots and Allen isn't even hitting

our legs look heavy - back to back I know, but still we need some life and need to attack the rim - even with KG back there if for no other reason than to collapse the def and open some 3ptrs

All the Bellyaching by Bellinelli fans needs to stop, dude needs to hit a wide open J and stop looking scared out there

Mbenga looked better than hoped - right up to the point he couldn't finish the lob for a dunk, ugggh

back to back and without al and barnes
nelly probably had some hope but after seeing them miss the first 5 shots and jackson drawing 2 fouls within the first 5 minutes he probably gave up.

Final score
Golden State Warriors 82 - Boston Celtics 105

Box score:
http://www.nba.com/games/20071121/GSWBOS/boxscore.html

GSW : FG 29/87 - 33.3%  Boston FG 38/79 - 48.1%
     3-pt 4/22 - 18.2%       3-pt 7/21-33.3%
     FT 20/28 71.4%          22/28 - 78.6%
     Reb 40                  52

Tough loss due to poor shooting percentage but the bright side we saw the new Warriors play.

ehhhhhh
Thats about as bad as the warriors can play, and they hung around with a supposedly elite team. I don't think they were outclassed at all, and no Al Harrington didn't help. Wright looked pretty good too, which takes some of the sting off the A## whooping.

We would be a lot better if
we brought in John Thompson III and have a little Princeton Offense. We would dominate if we did.

B-Wright really impressed me.  Give him some more PT.

And if we had Al and Barnes, we would've had a chance to beat them

And F U Gelen Davis, taking minutes away from MY BOY LEON POWE!!!!!!!!! Davis isnt good, he's just a fat A$$ that clogs up the lane.  Leon Powe has a Offensive Game.

i hope we win a championship soon
