RUMOR: Will Mullin accept it?

Rumor has it from the New York Post that Chris Mullin is the top candidate for Isiah's post as GM of the Knicks.

November 23, 2007 -- Golden State GM Chris Mullin is expected to emerge as a top candidate for the Knicks GM job if Isiah Thomas eventually is fired from his dual role as coach and president, The Post has learned.

wtf?
No way. Why would Mullin want to go to a team that has no chemistry and has a payroll way over the cap. He's just gonna be criticized hella badly if he cant turn the team around in NY. He already built a great relationship with the fans of the Bay Area and built a quality team on the court. There's no way he would want to leave something he created.

cuz
he's from NY

Nix figure he's done cutting his teeth and they hope he can work a DunMurphy type trade for them, not realizing Nelson is the key to making that work

they will throw more than Cohan money on the table

he's from NY (worth mentioning twice)

biggest market in NBA? one of the top-spending franchises anyway & he'd have more coin to throw

the only reasons he'd not take it would be if he really thought GSW was on the verge of something great and he wants to be here for the ride, or if we had new ownership on the horizon (no one's mentioned Cohan's difficulties on this site in a while)

I for one, would not miss Mullin but I'm in the minority around here. The obvious scenario could be Mully moves, Nelson to GM, and Smart or a similar style coach gets the whistle - but because of the friction between Nelson & Cohan whether any or all of that would happen is a big unknown

in Nelson we trust

Yeah
If the rumor is true, then I bet Mullin is thinking real hard to make his decision. Stay with the franchise he's been with for over a decade, or go home and run New York.

When Mullin played...
...for us, the New York media would yearly proclaim that Mullin was close to being traded to the Knicks.  Tey love him in New York, but the reality is, he's never actually been involved with that franchise, whereas he has been involved with us for over twenty years (give or take a few Hoosier seasons). I suspect this job and this area are likely more of a home to him than the notion of moving back east to run the damn Knicks would be.

My read is
with all the rumors circulating from New York, it is hard to sort out which is which. A rumor also has it when the older Dolan (Charles) has a talks with David Sterns, "its Jimmy's team and I get bigger stuff to concern myself with."  Based also on rumors, Jerry Colangelo was aslso being considered but  but many believed Colangelo will not accept it if he has no full control. The latest was Chris Mullin is being eyed for the job. I don't think Mullin will consider it because if Jim Dolan has his way he will not relinquish full control in running the team as Cohan did with Chris.
"Jim's going to continue to hold the power and whoever he brings in is going to have to kowtow to him," said a league source. "He won't give people total control. A guy like Jerry Colangelo will tell Jimmy to stay in his suite and stay out of his way because he's running things. But Jimmy would never agree to that. It's more important for him to be the man than it is to win. Winning is not the most important thing for Jim. If it was, he wouldn't have hired Isiah."

Previous rumors also cited Pacer's CEO Donnie Walsh to assume basketball operations for the Knicks next summer if Thomas will be fired.

Newsday reported Tuesday that someone with knowledge of the situation said Walsh would "certainly be open" to joining the Knicks with full control over the basketball operations.
"That is complete (expletive)," Walsh said Tuesday. "I would not be a candidate for that job for a lot of reasons. The major one is Isiah. I'm not doing that. Isiah is a friend of mine, and I wouldn't be a candidate for a job he's in."

Mullin has still one year of his contract with the GSW and I don't think Cohan will let him go. Perhaps two more years or co terminus with Nellie, after all he lured his old coach from retirement. I am sure protocol dictates he will not leave Nellie this early stage of the season to see the fruitation of whatever plan they've made as far as the Warriors is concern.
