GSoM Quiz: 2 FREE Tix to Thursday's Game vs the Rockets!

Update: We have a winner!

Congrats to Zack Vank for being the first one to get all of the questions right. At 8:35:33PM he gave out all the correct answers. Hopefully his knowledge of the Warriors and Rockets is that much better. Thanks to everyone who played, unfortunately there could be only one winner. Zack Vank, email us at goldenstwarriors@gmail.com with the email you registered on the GSOM and we’ll get you all set up with the tickets. Have fun and make sure you put the roar in ROARacle.

Make the jump for the answers to the questions.

==================================================

Welcome to the 2nd GSOM ticket giveaway. This time, we're giving away our 2 lower bowl GSOM tickets to the game against the Rockets this Thursday (11/29). Just like the GSOM Pop Quiz a couple weeks ago, the first person (by comment timestamp) to answer all of the questions correctly wins. If nobody answers all of the questions correctly by 8p tomorrow, the first person with the most correct answers wins. Hopefully it doesn't come to that.

In preparation for the game against the Rockets on Thursday, this quiz is all about Warriors-Rockets history. So, without further ado, here are the questions for the quiz broken up into different section by difficulty. Put your answers in the comments.

Minnesota Timberwolves Section

Current ESPN Power Rankings

These are just to warm you up, they should be easy.

1) When you watch the game on Thursday and you`re sitting in our seats, you won`t have Bob and Jim telling you who the Rocket players are. This will get you ready for watching the game and knowing who the players are before you get there. There are several Rockets players who wear the same jersey number as Warriors players. List ALL of the pairs of Warriors and Rockets players who currently share the same jersey #.

2) The Rockets franchise didn't always call Houston home. Tell me the name of the city they used to play their home games and one of the Hall of Famers from that team.

Washington Wizards Section

These questions are about guys who used to be Warriors. With a little research on Google and GSOM (just use the handy dandy search box above), you'll be well on your way to scoring those tickets.

3) 2 part question.
Part 1: Current Rockets coach, Rick Adelman, coached the Warriors awhile ago. List the seasons he coached the Warriors along with the records for each season.
Part 2: Who succeeded Rick Adelman after he left Portland and who succeeded him after he left Golden State?

4) During the 1987-1988 season the Warriors and Rockets made a blockbuster deal involving one of the twin towers 7-foot-4 Ralph Sampson and a few other memorable names. Name all of the players involved in this trade between the two franchises and their points per game in their first full season after the trade.

Utah Jazz Section

The Warriors just can't beat these guys. This section is all about past losses and struggles. The guys below might not be winners, but by getting these correct, you just might be a winner.

5) Houston Rockets star guard Tracy McGrady has never made it past the first round in the playoffs. List each of the teams he played on, the teams he lost to in those playoff series and the years the losses occurred.

6) The Warriors and Rockets have never met in the playoffs, but have faced each other plenty of times over the years. Look back into the past 20 years. List the seasons from the 1986-1987 season through last year in which the Warriors won more games than they lost against Houston. If the answer is 0, simply put 0.

Funleavy Foto Fun Section

This section is all about pictures. We love pictures at GSOM and try to post them in every preview and recap for fun. To complete our quiz, you have to, in the GSOM tradition, go find a photo. For your answers in this section, provide either the link to the picture or put the image inline.

7) The Warriors drafted someone right before Tracy McGrady was taken #9 in a draft about a decade ago. Find a picture of the player the Warriors drafted dunking the ball.
Brownie Points (worth nothing but for fun): include a funny caption with your picture.

The first GSOMer (by comment timestamp) to answer all of the questions correctly wins the tickets. Now get to work, there's some history for you to learn. Here's a template to help you out with your answers:

1) #: Warriors Player - Rockets Player

2) City name:
Hall of Famer:

3) Season: Wins - Losses
Name of successor at Portland:
Name of successor at Golden State:

4) Warriors Received:
Player Name: PPG

Rockets Received:
Player Name: PPG

5) Season: Team He Played On - Team He Lost To

6) Season (if any)

7)

Star-divide

1) When you watch the game on Thursday and you`re sitting in our seats, you won`t have Bob and Jim telling you who the Rocket players are. Tmac and Jax have the same number - #1

Answer:
1 - Stephen Jackson - Tracy McGrady
2 – Mickael Pietrus – Luther Head
3 – Al Harrington - Steve Francis
6 – Troy Hudson – Bonzi Wells
7 – Kelenna Azubuike – Mike James
44 – Austin Croshere – Chuck Hayes
Warriors Roster | Rockets Roster

2) The Rockets franchise didn't always call Houston home. Tell me the name of the city they used to play their home games and one of the Hall of Famers from that team.

Answer:
Believe it or not, the Rockets didn’t always play in Houston. They started as an expansion franchise in sunny San Diego in 1967. I thought the nickname Rockets must have changed when they got to Houston because what kind of rockets are there in San Diego? Turns out there was a rocket manufacturing site in San Diego. "Rockets was chosen in a contest due to San Diego's motto, "A City in Motion" in addition it was the manufacturing site of the Atlas rockets, used by NASA."

They had 3 Hall of Famers, Elvin Hayes, Calvin Murphy, and Alex Hannum.

3) 2 part question – Part 1: Current Rockets coach, Rick Adelman, coached the Warriors awhile ago. List the seasons he coached the Warriors along with the records for each season. Part 2: Who succeeded Rick Adelman after he left Portland and who succeeded him after he left Golden State?

Answer:
For this one, I hope you were familiar with our Dirty Dozen history piece last year – Part I held the key to the answer. Rick Adelman coached the Warriors to a 36-46 record in the 1995-1996 season, and then led them to a 30-52 record in the 1996-1997 season. Additionally, when he left Portland, PJ Carlesimo was next in line. Then when he left Golden State, PJ Carlesimo again was next in line. I’m surprised Sacramento didn’t hire PJ last year instead of Muss.

On a side note, remember 1995? Our #1 overall pick Joe Smith was rookie of the month twice, Spree was playing out of his mind, and the Warriors were supposed to return to the playoffs. Oops.

For a look back on those years in between the playoffs and perhaps a stroll down memory lane, check out Part I, Part II, and Part III.

4) During the 1987-1988 season the Warriors and Rockets made a blockbuster deal involving one of the twin towers 7-foot-4 Ralph Sampson and a few other memorable names. Name all of the players involved in this trade between the two franchises and their points per game in their first full season after the trade.

Big man, Ralph Sampson rockin the old school Warriors threads

Answer:
Poor Warriors personnel moves didn’t just start back in 1994 with the 13 year playoff drought. Bad trades and draft picks have been a calling card for the Warriors for a long time. I’d say that this Ralph Sampson trade backfired. Check it out:

Warriors get:
Ralph Sampson: 6.4 ppg
Steve Harris: 1.3 (Pistons)

Rockets get: Eric "Sleepy" Floyd: 14.2 ppg
Joe Barry Carroll: 14.1 ppg (Nets)

Ooops.

5) Houston Rockets star guard Tracy McGrady has never made it past the first round in the playoffs. List each of the teams he played on, the teams he lost to in those playoff series and the years the losses occurred.

You didn’t think last year was Baron’s first playoff series victory did you?

Answer:
Tracy McGrady has had 6 chances to get his team out of the first round of the playoffs. None of those times has he succeeded. Last year, the Warriors advanced further than any of his teams ever did. Here’s the list:

1999-2000 Toronto Raptors: Lost to New York 3-0
2000-2001 Orlando Magic: Lost to Milwaukee 3-1
2001-2002 Orlando Magic: Lost to Charlotte 3-1
2002-2003 Orlando Magic: Lost to Detroit 4-3
2004-2005 Houston Rockets: Lost to Dallas 4-1
2006-2007 Houston Rockets: Lost to Utah 4-3

By the way, props to Zack Vank for including the series outcome in his answer. It wasn’t asked for but is much appreciated.

With that track record, you still think the Rockets are making it out of the first round? Does TMac have that killer instinct? He’s got all the talent in the world but can he get his team over the hump? I have to see it to believe it.

6) The Warriors and Rockets have never met in the playoffs, but have faced each other plenty of times over the years. Look back into the past 20 years. List the seasons from the 1986-1987 season through last year in which the Warriors won more games than they lost against Houston. If the answer is 0, simply put 0.

Answer:
There are only 2 seasons that the Warriors won the season series against the Rockets in the past 20 years, the 1986-1987 season and last year, the 2006-2007 season. The Rockets have won the season series 13 times and the teams have tied 6 times. In those seasons, the Rockets won 57 times and lost just 26 times. Yikes.

7) The Warriors drafted someone right before Tracy McGrady was taken #9 in a draft about a decade ago. Find a picture of the player the Warriors drafted dunking the ball. Brownie Points (worth nothing but for fun): include a funny caption with your picture.

Answer:
This was my favorite question. Tracy McGrady was drafted #9 in the 1997 draft. The dominant center out of Colgate, Adonal Foyle was taken #8 by the Warriors. Oops. I didn’t think there would be too many pictures of Adonal Foyle dunking the ball, but here are the few that were sent in as answers, with some of the captions.
