Around SBN: The 2009-2010 Card Chronicle Big East basketball preview

OPEN THREAD: Game 4 - Warriors vs Cavaliers

Warriors (W-L): 0-3

Cavs (W-L): 1-2

Time: 7:30pm PST

TV: FSN Bay Area

Radio: KNBR 680

You know it was just one week ago that we kicked off GSOM Night 2 with the Warriors' Opening Night? Just one week ago, just 3 games ago we were optimistic about the Warriors' season. Many in the Bay Area were confident the Warriors could pick up where they had left off last season. Running and gunning their way to exciting, high scoring games.

Then the Jazz exposed their weaknesses (twice) and the Clippers did as well. Now after three straight losses, the Warriors are looking to regroup against last year's Eastern Conference Champs, the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Cavs are 1-2 with losses coming against Dallas and Phoenix while their win came against New York. These guys will be not much easier than Utah and more difficult than the PaperClips. If you thought Chris Kaman looked like a beast (yes, literally and figuratively), the Cavs two big men Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Drew Gooden will be even worse. Both are averaging double digit rebounds to go with 15+ points per game. Then throw in that really good guy on their team, King James, and you have a recipe for a Warriors disaster. No rebounding, no defense. Uh oh...

But there are some bright spots on the Warriors to counter what the Cavs have to offer. Al Harrington finally broke loose against the Jazz on Saturday and will look to continue his strong play. Kelenna Azubuike has looked solid the entire year and should be able to keep scoring against this team. Throw in my belief that Baron won't let LeBron upstage him on his home floor and you have what could be an amazing matchup of superstars.

We'll really need Biedrins to battle in the paint tonight to have a chance. Monta needs to step up his game and hope that some guy nicknamed a slang word for a female body part doesn't upstage him (that's Daniel "Boobie" Gibson for those that didn't follow the playoffs last year). Then of course there's the bench. They need to step it up and provide the starters, especially Baron, some rest by putting in productive minutes. Also, will Brandan Wright get some burn? Even though the Warriors will continue to be without Captain Jack for another 4 games, I expect this one to be close.

Hash and I will be at the game sitting in section 109, row 27, seats 15-16. Come by and say hi.

Predictions:

  • LeBron drops 30
  • Baron drops 31
  • LeBron dishes 10 assists
  • Baron dishes 11 assists
  • LeBron grabs 11 boards
  • Baron grabs 12 boards
  • Dual triple doubles!
  • Cavs score 108
  • Warriors score 109

Post your predictions before the game and your comments during the game in this open thread.

Win #1 comes tonight!

Update (Atma Brother #1): Don't forget to watch Warriors Roundtable Live at 7pm on FSN Bay Area if you're not sitting in 880 traffic or riding BART to the game!

Update 2 (Atma Brother #1): Live Box Score from Yahoo!

Update 3 (Atma Brother #1): Warriors lose 104-108.

Stay tuned for the recap...

AB couldn't contain Big Z all last year.

i doubt he'll dominate him in any way this game. Although i hope so.

I predict B Wright for 20 min. 8 points, 6 boards off 55% shooting. A lot of activity down low and breath of fresh air when he comes in for Al late in the first.

Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league.

Warriors Finally Get One
I think the W's will be able to run on the tired disorganized Cavs.  The W's will dive in for steals when LeBron puts it on the floor and get the fast break going.  The Cavs are weak inside which fits nicely with the W's strengths.  Ilgaskus can score but he's a slow guy which should help Biedrins and Gooden is athletic but unrefined.  I think Azubuike and Pietrus can stay in front of LeBron and Baron and Monta can exploit Gibson/Hughes.
Nothing better than "The City".

Brandan Wright makes an appearance to help us win
the game. Ws win by 8 in last 5 mins of 4th quarter. LeBron kills and so does Hughes.

BD goes off, going for 45 pts and 15 dimes, 6 rebounds and 5 steals. while going 5-7 from the 3pt line. Bottom line is Dubs pull this one out 116-105

if you want to beat Ilgauskis, you got to make him play D. His knees aren't in great shape, make him come out and defend the high pick and roll all day. Maybe he'll get fouls and tired from chasing the mobile Biedrins as he cuts to the lane.

Baron better destroy Snow, Jones, and Boobie. None of them will remind anyone of Deron.

Al v. Gooden...if they want to try to post up Gooden, they are welcome do do it all night. I still remember Al "pulling the chair out" from under Gooden last year, great stuff. Al's playing very well, Gooden can't guard him.

Pietrus will foul out in the first quarter trying to guard Lebron. Fortunately Lebron is a mediocre FT shooter.

Questions? Complaints?

Straight outta www.urbandictionary.com !
LOL- asdf, the first 4 letters in the home row. Commonly used by internet newbs to either spam a board, create topics, or "remind" another user that they are there and existant, demanding attention.

or...

  1. Usually a mannerism for displaying frustration (e.g. what the heck)
  2. four letters on the home row struck by the left pinky, ring, middle, index finger (respectively)
and thats WORD!

Wait a minute!!
W's 109 Cavs 108??

Thats just a tricky way of saying Warriors by 1, and we all know what that means...

Predictions: B Wright get 6pts 4 Reb and looks impressive doing it. Kaz get at least one nasty dunk. Monta puts together his first good game with 6 asst, 1 to and 0 3ptA.

When is YaoButtaMing gonna post a game thread?
I miss his humour.

All of that aside, I almost guarantee a Warriors loss tonight. The Cavaliers are just another of "Those teams" such as the JAzz and the Lakers of least year that we simply can't beat. The Cavaliers beat us last yer WITHOUT LEBRON AFTER THE INDIANA TRADE.

Just some food for thought.

My first post!
We all know each game is a must win in Warrior-nation, but this one has to be a win. Getting a win at home will give the team a boost of confidence and help them through the next 3 games without Jack.

I hope playing in front of the home crowd will energize the team and some of the slumping players. Barnes has got to step up, especially if the W's hope to contain LeBron. I'm looking to Wright to come in and contribute and also see B-Nelli gain some confidence.

I've got the W's wining by 5. 115-110.

Hey
Just another internet tip, if you are responding to soemone in particular, instead of putting your comment in the box at the bottom of the page click on the "reply to this" link right under the comment you want to reply to. It cuts down on the confusion in the busy threads with lots of responses.

Warriors by 1
  • When Drew Gooden's going nuts just remember he's from the Yay.
  • When Ilguaskas is going nuts just remember it's amazing how he recovered from all those foot injuries early in his career to become a top center and former All-Star.
  • When Lebron's going nuts just remember his Nike shoe line's still got nothing on Jordans and even AI's.

by Atma Brother ONE on Nov 6, 2007 3:55 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Former Warrior Great sitting this one out

http://www.ohio.com/news/break_news/11056916.html

It's funny, but back then I really thought he and Jamison were going places. I think Hughes is just in the worst possible system for him. Hoopswise he should've stuck with the Washington Warriors, but dollarswise you can't really argue with his move to the Cavs.

we'll probably
just have to accept that baron's never going to be above a 65-75% ft shooter, but all these consecutive minutes can't be helping him. why nellie doesn't rest him more in the 1st half especially when monta comes in is beyond me. especially since baron has seemed more reluctant to push the ball in both of the heavy minute games (other one being the clippers game).

this was a winnable game
wow...this is pathetic. matt barnes has completely lost his mojo. he's proving last year probably was a fluke for him. he's no stephen jackson. jackson is the only 80% freethrow shooter on this team, and in his absense they lack a player who can confediently draw fouls and head to the line. his supsension also hurts on defense because jackson seems to be the best only player on the team who can gaurd a swingman effectively over the course of an entire game. hopefully by the time he gets back they wont be 0-7.

ALSO...this team takes the worst shots in the NBA. whats with all these fadeaways and ridiculously long threes??

by RC650 on Nov 6, 2007 10:12 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I think a 2-5 start is very plausible.
Wins against the Mavs and revenge on the clips. Then hopefully Jax ignites a spark we so desperately need.

by WarriorForLife on Nov 6, 2007 10:17 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

They also looked very flat footed offensively
at the end.  There was no purpose to what little motion they did in that last 2 min.  It irked me to see 17 sec click on the shot clock w/o a single meaningful pass once they got to the front court.  That's why they were taking terrible shots down the stretch.

problems
1, 2, 3, 4, 5,: Defense
The zone was a step slow, Monta had a huge brainfart  running at ilgauskis rather than staying home on Gibson. We could give up a 2, but not a 3 to their best 3p shooter.

Overall on the nite, we didn't get crushed on the glass, but we didn't get the stls/blks we needed to to win

OFFENSE:
Baron Davis, Monta Ellis, and yes, Kelenna Azubuike collectively went around 20 for 57. We will never win with the backcourt shooting this inefficiently. I'll put the goat of the game on Baron Davis, who took 28 shots (!!!). Sure he got assits, but he also slowed the offense to a crawl a times by dominating possessions juust holding the rock doing nothing and then forcing it at the end. Run the offense and cut, thats what freakin' point guard should do. Monta and Azubuike were also stone cold

Harrington was once again brilliant, but our ballhogging guards couldn't find him enough. He would have worked ILgauskus and Gooden real good, but never had a shot.

Biedrins...i can't figure out the TO's. Last year he caught everything, this year he's missing some passes. A couple instances were because the guards gave him the ball in awkward spots (he should not get the ball when he's going IN to traffic that far from the basket, he should be given the ball when defenders are retreating and he has a shot to actually do something. He still cleaned the glass  and, as I pointed out to some people's disbelief, distributed the ball with 4 assists.

Nellie:
Use the freakin' bench, Belinelli and POb might have given our boys a blow.

Barnes:
Getting back on track, 4/8 overall is solid

Pietrus:
4 fouls in 19 minutes. Dang.

Refs:
Screwed us at the wrong moments. Ellis with a foul then a carry? c'mon, let that stuff go

Questions? Complaints?

Offense
They need to be more creative with their cuts, cuz it seems that AB's quick cut after slipping the screen is being shut down.  Teams are looking for that now.  Notice how he's having to recieve the ball in traffic more often.

They need to run a play off that, cuz if AB's getting the ball aroung 2-3 people, then someone else has got to be open.

THIS IS OOOAKLAND!!!

by Tim N Chris Burger on Nov 6, 2007 10:39 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

solution
Harrington needs the ball and more shots

Baron should not take 28 shots, he's not an efficient scorer and a poor shooter (the anti-nash, who shoots 50%/40%/90%)

Questions? Complaints?

by OptionZero on Nov 6, 2007 10:49 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed
They should design more plays al.

I also think they shouldn't rely so much on the two-man game.  There were times where baron and AB would try to work the pick and roll, the defense would read it, and baron would be left in no man's land - not knowing whether to pass or shoot.

If that wasn't the only organized play they ran in the halfcourt, then maybe teams wouldn't be all up in the w's playbook.

THIS IS OOOAKLAND!!!

Well
This just shows us that Stephen Jackson is the best player on the team.
Just watch, once he gets back, he's gonna be ballin' it up.
No more stupid shots. Please.
And get Belinelli and PoB in there some more.

by jtoj on Nov 6, 2007 10:29 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

jackson
he will be able to help out the defense, but he will not help with shot selection. he took some of the worst shots last year

by AJC3317 on Nov 6, 2007 10:52 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Let's be fair...
...Barnes had a pretty good game. He airballed that last three, but they weren't going to pull it out at that point anyways.

Ellis' big problem is that when he starts going to the basket, he NEVER kicks it out. Defenses know that when he gets going, they don't have to worry about anything but sending him away.

Azubuike had an off game. Not gonna complain too much.

Baron made some mistakes and did some good things. Once again, not gonna complain too much.

Biedrins worries me a little. It doesn't seem like he's on it like he was last year. I feel like O'Bryant has made more impact on defense when he's been in than Biedrins has so far.

The sooner we start seeing Wright get more time, the sooner we'll know what kind of team this could really be. As annoyed as I am at the loss (especially to the Cleveland Cavaliers, the worst team to ever make the finals), I just don't feel like I have it in me to get too upset at this point. We're not going to lose every game, and the Clippers aren't going to win every game. Things will likely regress to the mean in time.

they did this last year too
where they don't stay at home on the opposing team's best or hottest shooter - the mike miller incidents stand out the most. why did they keep running out on devin brown? do they have him on their fantasy teams   or something? 8 assists?

by the evil monkey on Nov 6, 2007 11:03 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Mental
error...again. Dubz have always left the opposing teams' hottest shooter open in the clutch. They can't help themselves.

I was disappointed that Wright only got 3 minutes, although when he came out the Dubz went on a 15-3 run, but that wasn't his fault. Nelson just wanted more offense.

No Belinelli tonight? shoot.

Baron shot 29 frikken times? who does he think he is...Michael Jordan? puh-lease.

Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league.

Just
stop talking about when jackson comes back all of our problems will dissapear.Jackson is not MJ to this team and he can play as stupid as the warriors are playing right now. We're not playing smallball but streetball, no defence shooting terribly,...I just hope this is not another 35-47 season, but well it is always easy to fall back to old days.
