Open Thread: Game 5 - Warriors vs. Mavs

Tony.psd will be rocking the Roaracle with these badboys on national TV!

Warriors (W-L): 0-4

Mavs (W-L): 3-1

Time: 7:30pm PST

TV: TNT

Radio: KNBR 680

When it rains, it pours.  A slow start, a sputtering offense, and a defense that looks swiss cheese look as thick as the Great Wall of China.  Furthermore, injuries are piling up already with Barnes out with a sprained finger and Ellis and Azubuike both probable.

But let's try to put all this into perspective.  The Warriors 0-4 start matches the beginning of their arch rival's start last year that ended in one of the best records in NBA history.  Perhaps they'll have the same trajectory as them?  Well, they face THAT team tonight, the Dallas Mavericks, in their first showdown since last May, where the Warriors "served" them on televisions across the globe.  PLUS, historically, the Warriors are to the Mavs as Kryptonite is to Superman, expectations are to Mike Dunleavy Jr., Mike Dunleavy Sr. is to Mike Dunleavy Jr., and lactose-based foods is to my body.  And even if we do lose, at least the Warriors will be seen nationally on TNT for all those folks outside the SF Bay Area in the continental U.S. who are getting screwed by Comcast.  It's Comcastic!

Anyway, this highly anticipated bout of epic proportions (we're talking Rocky vs. Apollo creed big in Rocky II) might not live up quite to the hype as both Warriors and Mavs are without some of the names that made this rivalry possible last year.  No JRich, no Barnes, no Jax, no Josh Howard (injuries...thank god!), potentially no Devin Harris and Erick Dampier (not that he actually matters anyway).  But I guess regardless, the new folks on both teams can be the surrogates to the history between these ball clubs.  They're like the Latino boy band, Menudo, I guess.  Or Destiny's Child for you children of the nineties.

The Warriors need this game more so than the Mavs need to beat the Warriors -- which is a lot.  A win over the Mavs at this point in the season would give this young team some confidence that it can step up in times of crisis.  Can AZ be JRich and dunk all over people?  Will Pietrus play the role of Jax and shutdown Dirk -- emotionally -- as well??  Can Davis channel his less pressing side and trust his teammates to make big plays???  Will the POB vs. Dampier matchup seem like some weird projection of POB's future self???? Will a random Mav (J.J. Barea) kill the Warriors?????

We'll just have to tune in tonight to find out.

Predictions:

* Warriors by -5
* Nowitski gets dunked on ... TWICE!
* J.J. Barea is the next Steve Nash ... for one night only.
* Sportscasters make some awkward comments about the Warriors, inaccurately pronouncing names.

What are your predictions for the game?  Any thoughts?  Post them in the comments before, during, and after!

Update [2007-11-8 18:17:51 by dj fuzzylogic]: Also: Check out our good friends over @ Mavs Moneyball for the rival's take on how its going down.

Look for me...
Sorry Guys, I didn't have time to do a segment, but hopefully by this weekend I can post up my inspiration 2 these 2 signs posted below... (I was house sitting and my Mom's internet was down) Check em' out and look for me- I'll be out and about the Arena... so don't be a stranger. I may just chill up top Club 200 which I think is a pretty interesting place (and atmosphere.) I'm just stoked 2 be at another game! Good times, great people, win or lose its gonna be a great time out! Look for these signs all around the arena and enjoy!

Update for everyone...
Devin Harris will be in the lineup for the Mavs and Josh Howard is labeled as a "game time decision"...but reports from Dallas sports talk radio is he will be playing.

oh man
the Altered Beast sign is HOT! I wish that were a T-Shirt, I would definetly buy it off ya

Well here's some good news, Warrior killer Josh Howard IS NOT playing tonight, he suffered a sprained ankle yesterday and they've ruled him out for tonights game.

Jrich4mvp
you got a link?  he's on my fantasy...so damn, but....helps the warriors so...YAY.

Warriors
No Josh Howard and Devin Harris is a help.  Jason Terry still can't guard Baron Davis, and Diop's not going to be getting Biedrins in foul trouble.  If Pietrus/Azubuike can play like Jack-lite for the night on Dirk we may just have a chance in this one....

Warriors by 4 in a nailbiter down to the finish line.

HOLLA @ SECTION 213 ROW 9! I'll be rocking a BD the City jersey.

Brandan Wright
Barnes out, Cro out. Might Nellie be forced to play Wright more? There's no other backup PF on the roster.

Ellis/Azubuike both banged up. Belinelli might be forced to get some burn.

Baron/Beli/Pietrus/Biedrins/Al with a bench of POB, maybe Lasme. That...is a pretty short rotation, with no backcourt depth at all. Ugh.

I actually think Wright could cause Dirk problems...Dirk isn't superfleet of foot to blow by Wright, he certainly won't be posting anyone up. The upfakes and handle will be a test, but Wright's length, imo, could give Dirk fits. Brandan just needs to avoid reaching in and jumping to give Dirk a buncha FT attempts.

Questions? Complaints?

by OptionZero on Nov 8, 2007 12:07 PM PST   0 recs

yea
i agree that Dirk would probably jack him with the pump fake, but that wouldn't be any different or less or more effective than it is against Pietrus, Barnes and/or anyone else.  I have a feeling Big Al will be defending him tonight... especially with no Josh Howard out there.  The warriors have a chance, but any team does.  I just want us to grab a win before the Sonics.

by david240z on Nov 8, 2007 12:28 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

i think
a savvy offensive player like Dirk would be too much for a rookie. I hope BWright gets 30 minutes tonight, but i just don't see it. I see Nellie playing MP and AL 40 minutes tonight just to get the first win of the season.

We should probably see more Belinelli with no Monta and a hurt Buike. Baron's prolly gonna log another 40+ minute game, same with AB. We'll probably see a little more of POB, but not much.

I just don't see how the warriors will win tonight. Yes we beat them in the playoffs, but we were actually playing team ball.

I don't know what the hell we're playing this year.

If Wright, Belinelli don't get some PT this game, i will be muy pissed.

Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league.

found this on Henry Abbott's
TrueHoop site:
David Moore of the Dallas Morning News explains some of the ways last year's debacle at the hands of the Golden State Warriors has informed recent changes in Dallas: "The Warriors are the reason Jason Terry is now a sixth man, as the Mavericks want more size and defense in the backcourt next to Devin Harris. Golden State is the reason the club flirted with Chris Webber and P.J. Brown, signed Brandon Bass and Juwan Howard and drafted Nick Fazekas. The goal is to place a decent scoring threat at center so teams don't ignore the position and place an extra interior defender on Nowitzki."

i would be surprised
if wright gives nowitzki, the MVP of the freaking league problems. i guess anything is possible. i know you said he could give him fits, but i would be very, albeit pleasantly surprised, if he gives him problems
we will miss your j rich

by ripjrich on Nov 8, 2007 2:58 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Lets hope so
He looked a little overexcited against the Cavs.  He missed one pretty obvious defense assignment by drifting towards the ball and that drive/pull-up/oh-crap shot was definitely nerves.  He needs to settle in a little but play focused ball.  Could be said for every dub so far though...why is Monta throwing the ball backward over his head with 1:30 left anyway?

I may sound like I am complaining, just want to see the Warriors step it up like we all know they are capable of.  I didn't think team chemistry would be lacking, but it appears that way.

Wish me luck...
Im sneakin a gang of food in 2nite! I just got back from the atm... pulled $40 bones, dropped $20 on gas... $15 later for parking... I don't think $5 bucks is enough for a churro! Im sneakin in health bars and granola... waaaaay healthier than an $8 dollar Oracle Dawg! Word up.

Tough times...
Usually by the 3rd or 4th quarter my wife and I get mad thirsty- it blows 2 realize that when u buy 2 bottled waters- it costs 9 bucks... let alone 1 being half that price... and its the same sh!t as in 7-11 but 3 bucks more! Im stuffin' a diet coke in my pocket too lol! also- I just love it when u go 2 a hella busy game, like 2nite and when u ask for I don't know... chicken strips around the end of th 3rd quarter and the concession person yells at you "WE AIN'T GOT NONE!" as if it was your fault! I love their expressions, it was just a question...!

save $15
Park at BART man! It's free and while it might take longer to get into the arena, it's faster to get out because you don't have to deal with all the traffic trying to stuff through 5 exits.

When you leave, get on 880 via Hegenberger or 98th instead of trying to get on at 66th.

by Fantasy Junkie on Nov 8, 2007 1:51 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

bart parking
how do you get to the bart parking lot from 880? do you take 66th and go pass the colisuem? or do you take hegenburger and keep going past the coliseum?

i'll

hopefully things work out and the ball bounces our way for the first time this year.

is that really
a prediction that theyre gonna lose? with the -5?

by Thoang77 on Nov 8, 2007 2:34 PM PST   0 recs

Holla at yo boy!
Here comes a BIG W.

I'll be there in Section 109, Row 27, Seats 15/16

by Atma Brother ONE on Nov 8, 2007 3:12 PM PST   0 recs

-5 means...
The Warriors are favored by 5, but that line was set by our Fuzzy DJ with logic not by the odds makers in Vegas.

The North Parking lot(66th) sucks this year.  The opening nite game had us stuck for an hour after the game!  South parking lot (Hagenberger) is the way to go.  BART SUCKS FOR LEAVING THE GAME, NOT GETTING THERE!

I hope the Dubs can pull it out.  Being 0-5 will not be good considering what the Clippers and Hornets are doing!

by gabezgsw on Nov 8, 2007 3:14 PM PST   0 recs

usually he just puts warriors by
whatever the prediction is, without the negative, especially because seeing the line is +8, i was a bit confused

by Thoang77 on Nov 8, 2007 3:17 PM PST   0 recs

Please Dubs, don't embarass yourselves on TNT!
I'm in NY, so this'll be my first Warrior game of the year. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do. I think (hope) win #1 will come tonight. No matter who wins, I predict it'll be a close game that's blown open in the 4th quarter.
