Troy Hudson's Season Probably Over

Golden State Warriors Head Coach Don Nelson hinted at this a few ago, but now it looks like it's pretty much set. From Geoff Lepper for InsideBayArea.com:

Warriors reserve point guard Troy Hudson told BANG-East Bay on Friday that his injured left hip requires arthroscopic surgery, a move that threatens to bring his first season with Golden State to a premature end.

Hudson said he will undergo surgery shortly after Jan.1 to repair a small tear in the labrum of his left hip. The exact date and choice of surgeon have yet to be finalized because some offices have been closed for the holiday season.

The typical recovery time for such a procedure is three to four months, Hudson said, which would put him on the shelf at least until the first week of April, when only two weeks remain in the NBA's regular season.

T-Hud gave it a good shot!

It's probably the end of Troy's career with the Dubs, so just wanted to say- thanks Troy.

Make the jump for a few quickies.

Star-divide

  • When the Warriors made their "big free agent splashes" this past offseason with Troy Hudson and Austin Croshere it seemed like they were making some pointless signings. After 29 games into the games those moves really turned out to be... pointless. Neither player had any upside at the time of the signings and neither player has had any really significant positive impact on the team in the regular season this year.

  • What a disastrous offseason for this ball club. They lost a big minute, solid, rotation player and fan favorite for nothing in terms of this season (check Brandan Wright's minutes and Nellie's recent comments about Wright's playing time), picked up two vets with no upside who have been physically unable to play, drafted another guard who can't get his shot straight to offset his defensive, rebounding, and passing weaknesses, drafted a player in the 2nd round who didn't even last a month into the regular season, gave a 2nd round draft pick millions to refine his zero threat position in the NBDL, and now Nellie is forced to over play and overwork his starters. It's only a matter of time before fatigue and injuries set in. This team doesn't have enough depth to overcome missed games from Baron Davis or Stephen Jackson (who I still don't buy as the 2nd offensive option on a playoff squad), two guys who are routinely forced to do the hoops equivalent of pitching a complete game. Like Charles Barkley would say "Turrible. Just turrible."

  • This just can't be good for T-Hud's album sales which is really too bad. I thought he had way more skillz than T-Pain too.

  • I used to have fake Rolex from Tijuana that sorta looked like T-Hud's.
I use "sorta" very loosely here of course.

  • There is absolutely no reason why the Warriors should keep That Nutty Boy on the roster right now- unless the Warriors want to give Patrick O'Bryant, Marco Belinelli, and Brandan Wright another member for their bench posse that is. He's physically unable to help them out for pretty much the rest of the regular season and it's highly unlikely that Nellie will give him big minutes in the playoffs (if the Warriors even make it) pretty much out of nowhere.

  • Whether it's a traditional back up point guard (Earl Watson, Luke Ridnour), a fast, hybrid guard who can shoot the lights out (Earl Boykins), or a major rotation player and exceptional all around player on both sides of the ball (Ron Artest!), Chris Mullin and Robert Rowell need to find someone who can step in and help Nellie and the fellas this season. The Warriors may currently be 4 games over .500, but in the uber-loaded Western Conference that has only amounted to the 8th spot. The Warriors are still clinging to the last seed in the playoffs by only 1.5 games over the Utah Jazz. Make a move.

What should the Warriors do next?

As a Fan
I am happy to watch the helter skelter ride they give us almost every night with or without a deep bench. As a competitor though, I honestly hope we break the bank a bit and go over the luxury tax to get some much needed help.
Im hyped on Watson and Wilcox and or Artest. Not sure if Seattle or Sac would be down. For an arena to sell out night in and night out, there has got to be money coming in to support going over the luxury tax. What the hell do I know, Im just an armchair GM.

Let's Be Fair
What the Warriors lost in the off season (JRich) would not have addressed the Warriors main issues.  The main issues would have been:
  1.  Backup PG
  2.  Rebounding
JRich would definitely help the Warriors in scoring but Monta and Kelenna have more than made up the scoring between the both of them.  Also, JRich isn't a point guard or a power forward/center which the Warriors needed a lot of help.

As far as the offseason signings, Troy Hudson and Austin were decent veteran pickups.  Troy wasn't expected to play too much but if he could give 10 to 15 minutes a game, that's 10 to 15 minutes less of Baron playing every game.  As is, the Warriors have to rely on SJack and Monta when Baron is out.

Austin was probably the first anticipated backup to Andris and maybe Harrington.  Austin isn't going to block shots or rebound like Andris, but he is big and can bang a little in spot minutes, plus he could shoot the 3 point shot.  Alas, like Troy, Austin's been hurt.  However, the big man in the middle, DJ Benga has made this a moot point.  DJ has shown hustle and some rebounding ability in spot minutes and that will probably save Andris from wear and tear.

It's easy to look back and say the signings (and the trade) were pointless because of injuries and lack of playing time.  But the moves were made to address some of the weaknesses that existed (and still exist) and you can't fault the Warriors for trying.  The question is what does Mullin do next?

Backup PG
I would go for a cheap option rather than go for Ridnour and Watson. They may be better than players signed for the minimum but they have horrible contracts and acquiring them might mean we wouldn't be able to re-sign Monta, AB and Azubuike.
We could get Darius Washington who is a good young player and impressed the NBA champions or someone from the D-League - Andre Barrett? Maybe a veteran like Gary Payton or Jalen Rose to bring in experience and leadership. Any other ideas?
