OPEN THREAD: Game # 17 - Warriors vs. Magic

warriors-magic

Warriors (W-L): 9-7

Magic (W-L): 15-4

Time: 7:30PM PST tip off

TV FSN Bay Area

Vegas Odds Golden State favored by 2.5 pts (source: yahoo.com)

Hoooo boy. Tonight is going to be a hell of a match-up.

After a convincing win in Seattle last night, our boys are returning to the Arena to face off against the red hot Orlando Magic. Early speculation around the hoops world is putting the Magic second only to the mighty Celtics as the Eastern Conference superpower. Now whether this claim is questionable or not, Orlando's record isn't.

This is not a W that's going to come easy.

Dwight Howard has really come into his own this season. I've heard more than one person refer to him as a "Young Shaq", and I can't say that I entirely disagree. Averaging 23.5 pts and 14.6 boards, there can be no doubt that we're facing a premiere center tonight. With our recent surge in defensive efforts, Howard is truly going to put our boys to the test. My guess is that Nellie is going to play Harrington on him after his recent work with Yao. Despite Howard having a bit more speed, let's hope we can shut him down.

Add to the equation Rashard Lewis, who had proven his worth as an offensive contributor, and we will have a lot to contain. (Git' him Jack!)

Let's out-run em and out-gun em!! Tonight is a statement game.

GSoM Prediction:
- Warriors by 4.
- Foyle outscores Howard.
- Monta goes off for 30 plus.

Be sure to stop by our friends at Orlando Magic blog, Third Quarter Collapse and drop some thoughts on the game tonight.

Welcome back Adonal and GO WARRIORS!!!

**UPDATE** (Hash): After coming home and reading through the comments, we retract our statement that tonight's game is a "statement game". We regret any emotional trauma this may have caused you, your family, your coworkers, or your pets.
We still maintain the Foyle will outscore Howard. Advanced apologies to those of you who are unfamiliar with sarcasm.
That is all.

predictions
  • adonal and howard: double double-doubles
  • warriors score 140
  • monta ellis makes his pitch to be the next player of the week
  • b-diddy starts his push to be player of the month
  • warriors win!
btw, i don't think this needs to be a 'statement game' - we made a huge statement by winning nine of ten!

Agreed
Perhaps it is better worded that this is yet another statement game, however.

Wins against Phoenix, Houston, and (hopefully) Orlando solidify us as a Western Conference powerhouse. Every time we take down an elite, we take another step towards being one ourselves.

i think
dj mbenga is going to have a break out game with 10 rebs and 4 blocks.

My crack at the crystal ball

-Dubs score 37 in 1st quarter
-Howard gets 20 boards and a frustrating 20 pts (will say shoulda had more)
-Turk & Shard shoot the Magic out of this one
-Monta makes a top 10 play of the night
-Dubs by 8, with another 4th quarter lock down job
-Magic fans across the net will complain about how their team saved their worst shooting night for tonight.

Best duo since...

by Tim N Chris Burger on Dec 3, 2007 4:27 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

first (old?) timer
ZOne and 1- The magic are TALL and movable. Much offense comes through Turg. Defensably do we start Barnes instead of Monta - who could come in and fly past already winded magicians. No one alone has done a great job on Howard, except those who get him in foul trouble. Harrington could pull him out or cause D3's. Haven't seen everyone playing D since my youth on the Least Coast.

It's finals week
and all i can think/read about is the Warriors. Anticipating the games and watching the games are completely unhealthy for my study habits.

At any rate... woohoo, vegas actually gave us the edge on this one... this after a gimme bet when they only gave the sonics 4 points.

I thinks this game will tell us a lot about our team that we are not completely sure about. Phoenix, and Houston are two very diff teams that allowed us to see what we were made up, and the Magics are definitely another one of those teams that has a different combination that can potentially be deadly for us. I cant wait to see who Nelly throws out on the court to start and how we fair.

Go Warriors.

A few pre-game notes:
  • Foyle is garbage. He averages less than 10 minutes per night. The Orlando coaches aren't gonna play him because some people in Oakland actually like the guy as a player. He isn't getting a double-double or outscoring Howard.
  • Biedrins didn't produce offensively against Orlando last season, though in one effort he did have 15 boards. In that game, Howard went for 30 and 25(!) and the W's lost.
  • HOWEVER, that game was before The Trade.
  • I like the idea of putting Big Al on Howard.
  • As stated above, this isn't a "statement game." They don't play statement games in early December. It is, however, a good chance to see the Warriors play one of the better teams in the East, and a good road team, and see what they're made of in this still early season.
  • Orlando only shoots 0.3 less 3's per game than the W's and they score 103+ per game. This should be a high scoring affair, which is exactly what the W's want.
Left hand, right hand, it doesn't matter. I'm amphibious.

THE ONLY THING THAT BOTHERS ME
IS THAT WE HAD THE VICTORY AT LEAST TWICE. WE GET A CHANCE TO SHOOT IN OUR SECOND TO LAST POSSESION AND THEN A HORRIBLE SHOT SELECTION FROM MONTA. TEN JACKSON'S THREE STRAIGHT TURNOVERS THEN THE MISSED LAYUP. WE HAD IT. PEOPLE SAY WE CAN CLOSE GAMES, WE GOT LONG LONG LONG ROAD AHEAD OF US TO HOW WE CAN FINISH GAMES.

my god
Why in all the blue hells does Monta Ellis take a 29 footer to end regulation? Why? Seriously, explain what the f- is going through his head?

Stephen Jackson is on fire, we have the ball and clock on our side and that's the best shot you can take? Our WORST 3P shooter on the floor jacking up  a shot several steps behind the arc? GO TO THE RIM

ATTACK THE BASKET

yeah, he's the future

Four factors:
We played ourselves out of this game.
Baron didn't play in OT.
The Magic played astoundingly.
Adonal Foyle was on the Magic.

Ah well, this was a great game, loved the effort!

I alos would appreciate anyone who's willing to hook me up with the Tim Roye-Adonal Foyle interview!!!! (It'll probobly be on KNBR.com later.)

If BD
didn't foul out we would of won the game.  Jackson has never and never should be our primary ball handler.  Baron is also our go to guy when we need a basket.  First of all, if we hadn't shot so bad collectively as a team the game would of been won in regulation.  Second of all, if Davis didn't foul out we would probably have won in OT.

consolation
The team shot like poop, but hung tough with a very good team with an emerging superstar.  The mistakes in OT killed it, but it was a very entertaining game.  On a slightly unrelated note, the Pats won so I can't take consolation in that tonight.

Thank you!
I'm not saying that Monta is totally faultless; he's not, he does deserve some share of the blame in the loss. But to pin our woes at the end of the 4th quarter and beyond is an oversight. He kept the Warriors close in regulation when nobody could find a shot. He's young, he's gonna make stupid mistakes like taking that 3 that make you pound him. The team lost this one tonight, not one player.

And if this loss leads to enlightenment down the road, I can't be mad at it.  The magic are legit -the dubs could have folded their tents like in boston but they didn't. You can't win them all. Especially when the irreplaceable star has his worst performance of the year.

that has absolutely nothing to do with it

i don't care if the score is tied, or if we're down 30

there is no scennario where the QUICKEST guy on our team and WORST 3P shooter should be jacking up a prayer like that

NO Excuse NONE i dont care what the crap intangible isht you believe in

there is only ONE basketball play to make, and that is to take a shot at the rim and get fouled, you only need to hit 1-2 to win it

Actually, I thought BD had as much to do w/ this
loss as anyone else.  In the first quarter when he tried 5x to take on the magic singlehandedly, the lead went from 3 to 12pts.  It took the whole a game a sh!tload of effort to overecome that.  Everything he threw up was short.  After the first 8 straight misses, you knew that 41 minutes a game started to catch up to him.

In the NBA what is the definition of a
moving screen?????  I mean, how many times did Howard set screens and move with the player?  I mean, I am no expert, but it seemed like he was moving an awful lot.

Also, how does a smaller defender play tough D when they are allowing the Offensive guy to lead with his should and clear you out all night???

Don't mean to sound like blueNgoldblood,  but I think they needed this loss.  It will make them stronger, faster, smarter like kanye west said.  Trust me, will all be thanking orlando for this loss by the end of this season.

I'm with you
damn, considering they made something like 9 of 40 3-pt attempts, I'd say it's pretty amazing they were actually able to take it into overtime to begin with.  they won the previous six games, 4 from on-the-road, they've successfully dug themselves out of the 0-6 hole they started the season with and went from being the team with the worst record in the NBA to 2nd place in their division.  So they lose a heartbreaker in o/t against a team with the 3rd best record in the NBA.  I think I can find it within my heart to forgive them (I have a harder time forgiving Nellie for his technical in the 4th).

by centerre on Dec 3, 2007 11:43 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

while we're at it lets blame nellie
there was no need for that technica in the 4th quarter... if we had that one point we would have won as well...

by saintdee on Dec 3, 2007 11:01 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I was thinking the same thing
it would have never got to overtime without Nellie's technical.

by centerre on Dec 3, 2007 11:32 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

since you brought it up
I would actually blame the officials more than Nellie. Remember that goal tending call they flip-flopped? One official already had it right, but for some reason, they switch the call back.

Like Bob Fitz said, Nellie's fit was a carry over from that one call. It was a three point total that the Magic should never have had.

by lightz0ut on Dec 3, 2007 11:36 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yea, but ...
the reality of the situation is, without that technical -- regardless of the reason why -- it would have been our game.  We had some lousy calls when we played against the Kings.  It happens.

by centerre on Dec 3, 2007 11:46 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yeah you can say that
but they gave us a make up call with the tech on howard. they just didnt execute in the end.

I blame nelly
cuz he shouldv'e started beidrins.  They played like ish the 1st quarter, setting the pace for the whole night.  At least w/ beans in there we would have had a better chance rebounding a few of those missed shots & turned them into 2nd chance pts.  Plus we'd have played better d-fense in the 1st with his presence.

Nelly over thought this one, imo.

Best duo since...

by Tim N Chris Burger on Dec 3, 2007 11:44 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yea
i was thinking the same thing..maybe nellie was counting on harrington to hit the 3s tonite like against Houston which didn't happen. But clearly Biedrin was motivated tonight cause his gf, mom and dad were there.. I wonder if Nellie knew.
