Rumor: Jason Richardson, Baron Davis, and Mickael Pietrus All on the Trading Block

From Chad Ford's chat on ESPN.com this morning:

Christian, bend, or: Any news on the Warriors front?? Does Mullin believe his team can make playoffs with one true big man?

Chad Ford: (12:36 PM ET ) They're trying using Jason Richardson as bait. I also think Baron Davis can be had. Mickael Pietrus too. But the truth is no one is burning up the phone lines to get any of those guys right now.

Unless Ford's sources are off, it seems like the Warriors are pretty open to making a big move today. Don Nelson, Chris Mullin, and Rod Higgins look like they might have all their chips on the table. It could be an interesting trade day.

Does this team need another blockbuster trade to make the playoffs this season?

I dont
think we need a blockbuster. Maybe a small trade to get a decent big man, but nothing besides that.

I really hope no deal gets done for JRich or Baron.

I guess it all depends on
what your goal is

I can see making the argument that this team is never going anywhere and the real future is AB and Monta

We need something
What it is, I don't know. If I did, I think I'd stand to make a lot of money.

This team's really stuck in what looks like 35-40 win mode right now, though, so it probably will take something on the drastic side to change that much for the better.

Only make a blockbuster trade if...
..Kevin Garnett is the man they're getting. (Or Dwight Howard or Amare Stoudemire.) I'm guessing that JRich as "bait" being "shopped to everyone" is to see if Mullin can pry a top-flight big man from someone. I don't have a problem with Mully making everyone "available"--that doesn't necessarily mean he's just gonna trade JR or BD for some Crackerjacks. He's trying to make the team better to give their team a chance at the playoffs--it's not blow-up cap-save time, and I'm sure Mully knows that.

A couple scenarios
To make the playoffs, we'll probably need a big man to help Biedrins. Is he going to tire out towards the last 10-15 games? It's a possibility.

If another team say the Hornets, Clippers, Twolves, or Kings make a significant trade to improve their team, and the Warriors don't, that's really bad news.

u got a point
I just don't understand how our team doesn't already have the pieces to make the team.  ON PAPER at least we look damn good.  I honestly think once baron comes bak and we have a healthy bench then we'll be good.  UNLESS we are getting KG or Pau or some sort of dominant other big man then theres no point to throw away the good pieces you have.  My guess is we are goin to see something totally different from the rumors we are hearing.

Howard or Amare are not gonna happen but how about Pau Gasol?  He looked pretty good last night, him and Dris would be a nice tandem. Maybe they'd take monta plus someone else for gasol?

Yeah. I'm sure they would take that, because it would be the dumbest trade ever.

If you take a look out of your windows, you can now see Dallas, TX. Quite the site, no?

I dunno about that..
Big men come at a premium. Monta may be a better player than Gasol and a star in the making, and a helluva lot more exciting to watch, but can you imagine suddenly having Biedrins and Gasol manning the post? It'd be the Euro Twin Towers. You gotta give up something to get something, especially when you're getting a skilled 7-footer. Just think, if they can package Foyle's contract in there... it has to be worth mentioning. Certainly not "the dumbest trade ever".

I still say its the dumbest trade ever. Time after time again we give up our future stars and it ends up biting us in the ass. Eff that. I'm over trading anyone with an upside. (Pietrus is all crap, no upside. He's never gonna learn.)

no blockbusters
pietrus for a rugged rebounder + a second round pick

Change is certainly in order...
B.Davis will continue to be a injury plagued player (because he's too heavy) and Mully NEEDS to address it. Unforunately to address this, it looks like the guy to go is J-Rich cuz nobody wants B.Davis' atroticus contract.

Money Monta is not a PG, he's a two, and that makes J-Rich expendable. Factor in his contract, and its asta lavista baby!

I love GSW fan's, but honestly, many over-value the Warrior players. But hey, I guess that's why they call 'em fans!

Long live Foyle!

Glass half full
Mullie doesn't need to address Davis missing time.  It just means that Monta will have more experience running the point.

It is unwise to just stick Monta at the 2 without even giving thought to developing him as a pg.  From Nellie's perspective,  putting him as a 1 as opposed to a 2 just makes more sense in terms of favorable matchups.

As a 2, Monta may play a more natural position,  allowing him to score more.  However, your backcourt as a whole suffers defensively.  Against a team with a marquee 2 guard, are you going to D him up with Baron Davis or Monta?  Last I remember, Monta isn't exactly a lockdown defender. Imagine him guarding someone who's got more than a couple of inches on him.  Quickness advantages would be negated as 2's could pull up on him. You can teach handling and passing, but you can't teach height.   Also,  Davis and Monta on the floor at the same time puts more pressure on our frontcourt to rebound.  J rich is an infinitely better rebounder than Monta and Davis.

Having Monta play point gives him the advantage of height.   His quickness won't be negated as much b/c he's one of the faster guys in the league already.  Now, sure he doesn't have handles or isn't much of a passer.  But it would be ludicrous to not develop them.

I really don't think Monta is a young Iverson.  Iverson has always had handles.  Monta is just quick and a natural scorer.  Monta to me has always been more closer to Tony Parker but with height and hops.  Not to say he can't become more than that,  but ideally with the team makeup, you can't argue that Monta's ideal role would be as a facilitator who uses his natural scoring knack when the offense gets bogged down.  Having him drop 30 a game would be counterproductive considering the amount of scorers we have on this team.

So unless the W's are gonna blow up the team and bring in a bunch of defensive stopper around Monta, having Monta average 30+ is not a good blueprint to success.

by ThermoElectro on Feb 22, 2007 12:38 PM PST up reply actions

In a perfect world...
Monta would be a facilator, but you really answered your own question. Iverson is a excellent dribbler, as well as Parker; Monta is not a amazing dribbler or distributor, he's just fast.

You may a valid point about he's short stature/guarding 2's in the league, that's why longterm I can see Mully targeting a Shawn Livingston "type" PG to go along with Monta.

As much as I would like him to be a PG, and run the show, he's not Gilbert, or Iverson, or Parker as a PG.

Think Iverson meets Parker, without the amazing handles.

Monta Ellis is just a baller...one who needs a PG to compliment his skills.

we need a trade
if you want to separate yourself from the pack. I doubt you'd get anything for BD or Jrich right now worth the value. Pietrus should be gone. For anything really.
