It is the system! And the coach!
Here's a shocker from me: The problem is Nellie and his up-tempo system. I know I'm a broken record, but dammit! when are people finally going to admit we're in the middle of a civil war-- I mean that our emperor has no clothes!
It's well known that Nellie teams are averse to defense and rebounding, but this team even looks lost on offense. Nobody really looks like they have a clear understanding where they fit in -- which will happen when you take a young, marginal team and build it around a green light philosophy. We might as well be playing blacktop ball out there, because nobody's running plays or anything. No half-court offense -- again a major weakness in Nellie's up-tempo. You wonder why we can't control games late? It's because we can't play half court ball.
And speaking of major weaknesses, here's another: how about settling down with some solid rotations. Nellie is getting all this credit for mixing up the lineup every night, but the result has been total and complete lack of continuity. Nobody knows what their role is. And, because Nellie stresses that he'll play whoever's hot and sit whoever's not (unless your name is Patrick O'Bryant, in which case you ain't never going to see the light of day no matter what), players like Matt Barnes are running scared, knowing that a couple of turnovers or a bad shooting night will mean getting yanked out of the rotation for who knows how long.
I'm all for experimenting with different lineups and looking for a combo that works; Mike Montgomery didn't do enough of it. But we're at the All-Star break with the playoffs slipping away, the time for incessant tinkering is over.
But that is what Nellie does. His "sustained chaos" theory of coaching is not right for a team that doesn't have a good grasp of the fundamentals, either individually or as a team. Instead of building a strong foundation based on solid offensive sets, dedicated rebounding, and committed defense, Nelson has decided to build this team around free-form offense, fast breaks, and outshooting the other team. Pretty tough to do when you're shooting about 15 percent from the three-point line and turning the ball over 15 times a night.
I don't want to hear about injuries or bad luck or a weak roster. There are lesser teams out there doing more with less than the Warriors. And I don't want to hear any more Nellie-aggrandizing until he actually does something. Everybody is quick to give credit to Nellie for bringing a breath of fresh air to this team, but for all the hoopla, he has done little better than the vilified Monty (and Monty didn't even have Baron for half of last year. How would Nellie do without Baron for half the year?)
Yes, the team could be better, but right now, it is the system that sucks. I can think of several coaches in the league right now that could be getting a lot more out of this roster than Nellie is -- Jerry Sloan, Phil Jackson, Gregg Popovich to name just a few. If Jerry Sloan was coaching this team, we'd at least be playing .500 ball.
So let's stop giving Nellie a free pass. He can't just keep shaking his head and blaming it on the players. Maybe his 30-year old system for mediocrity is the thing that needs to get better. Maybe he should think about adapting his coaching style instead of blindly applying his signature style to every situation and every team, whether it's the right system for the situation or not.
I could go on all night. I guess, I've just reached the breaking point. Thanks for listening.
Bring back Mario Elie.

Nelson
- Small ball is not smart over the long haul. It's a cute idea for a game or two (or a playoff series) but over the long grind of an 82 game season all you are doing is unnecessarily wearing out your "artifical bigs".
- Nelson's chaos is bad with a young team. Covered in the post.
- Nelson's "head games" don't work. It's good that Nelson is harder on his players than Monty was. It's bad that he basically benched $20 million (Dunleavy, Murphy, Foyle) in the modern NBA with a sub .500 team with no alternative for digging their way out. (Ask Indiana how much they like Dunleavy, Diogu & Murphy right now!)
- If Don Nelson was so great, why is Avery Johnson the head coach in Dallas? Hmm....

I respectfully disagree
Basically I think this is 32-40 win team, give or take, no matter how you slice it, dice it, bake it, or coach it. Not saying I disagree with all your arguments, but for me the bottom line is that Nellieball has (a) dramatically increased the value of the players on this team who actually have talent -- Baron, Monta, Pietrus, Biedrins, even Dunleavy; (b) made us a lot more fun to watch (at least up until this abortion of a roadtrip).
I know (b) doesn't count for a lot, but when you have mediocre talent, I think it counts for something. Hoops is entertainment, after all. As for serious winning: As Nellie intimated in that most recent interview, the road to Winning is still very much being paved. Recognizing that Monta and Biedrins are the team's future -- and dumping or benching extraneous dead weight like Murphleavy and Foyle -- is at least a step in the right direction.
I say is this as a guy who, after the Webber fiasco 12+ years ago, wanted to strangle Nellie. As bad as things get this year, I won't miss the Monty era for a second. Nellie brough a glimmer of hope where there was none. We could do (and have done) a heckuva lot worse.

nothing wrong w/ the running & gunning part
i'm also not in favor of the zone when any of the pacer players are in the game. they're just horrible at it.
i would of liked to have seen the pacer players eased in instead of jamming 2 of them in the starting lineup immediately and thus disrupting chemistry.
that said, i have no problem w/ nellie being our coach. his style has helped us at home. and j-rich, if healthy, is our best half court player on offense - thus making him our best road player on offense. he also helps space the floor more for dribble penetration - kind of sad, but he's probably our most reliable jumpshooter.
and there's only so much nellie can say about the insane amount of 3's we shoot (we should never shoot more than 12 3's in a game on the road). and our incessant need to reach in on defense instead of moving our feet (which is why everyone gets in the lane against us and causes beans to get into foul trouble).
another problem we have is we obviously either have low bball iq's, dont read scouting reports, or need new scouts.

Hey man, this is the Warriors
At least it seemed that way during our current playoff drought.
And back to "This is the Warriors" for a second again, these are probably the best players and coach we're going to get and have had in a while.
Coach Jerry Sloan wouldn't touch the franchise with a 10 foot pole, a moot point as its not realistic for the coaches you named to want to take over this position. Prospective free agents and immediate impact players don't want to play here.
Elie might have wanted out for a reason. What players and coach do you have lined up for us if Nellie and a roster change would be able to miraculously happen right now?

It's both the players and the coach
Our young players are better than expected at this point, but it doesn't make them something they are not, which is experienced, battle tested NBA players. To put the fact that we can't play good team ball on a coach that's been here a half a season is a bit unfair given our experience level.
