The Bloggers' Bidding War for Kevin Garnett: Bring KG to the Bay!

If you're a real hoops fan, then you're already on board the Free KG Movement. After what will most likely be 3 straight playoff-less seasons in a league where over half the teams make the NBA's Sweet 16, Kevin Garnett and the Minnesota Timberwolves need to part ways like Beyonce and Jay-Z. (Seriously, how did this mofo end up with her? Oh well, major props to Jigga- there IS a god!)

Some of the finest folks in the blogosphere are doing a bidding war for Kevin Garnett to help clueless GM Kevin McHale decide where to trade The Big Ticket this offseason (more details to follow about the bidding war soon). With our usual undying love for the Golden State Warriors (aside from the clowns) and bad jokes, here is Golden State of Mind's 3 reasons why the Minnesota Timberwolves should move Kevin Garnett to the Warriors:

1. The pretenders can't throw up that W.
Let's take a quick look at some other potential suitors besides the Warriors for the services of KG and why they would be a disaster waiting to happen:

Boston Celtics: Unless KG feels like turning back the clock and trying to win an NCAA Championship in the near future, Boston and their annoying, sensationalized sports media would be an awful fit. Place this bet in Vegas- before the 2008 All Star break clueless GM Danny Ainge will find a way to move his 20-year-old-and-under version of the Celts from the NBA's Atlantic Division to the NCAA's Big East Conference.

Chicago Bulls: Um let's see, two straight years of losing in the first round of the NBA Playoffs? KG's been there, done that.

LA Lakers: Kobe + KG on the LA Fakers? On paper it sounds great, but do you actually think clueless GM Mitch Kupchak (the NBA has its fair shair of awful GM's) could pull this off? I'll bet you Andrew Bynum's last Twinkie that Cupcake secretly thinks that Kwame Brown in his prime will be better than Garnett.

New York Knicks: Actually I'll be perfectly honest, KG on the Knicks makes a lot of sense. A Starbury-KG reunion tour in The Big Apple with Isiah Thomas' underrated coaching and roster (although vastly overpaid) is a legit contender to come out of the Leastern Conference. Getting out of the Western Conference Playoff Bracket is going to be about the last team standing after the massacre, so a well-rested KG Knicks could actually win it all. PLUS, Isiah and bottomless pockets Dolan are sure to ink Garnett to the NBA's first ever 300 million dollar contract. So let's consider the Knicks a punt on this issue.

2. The greatest package ever assembled.
Quite frankly (Yo ESPN- bring back Stephen A's daily show!), Captain McHale and his sinking Titanicwolves' ship can do no better than trade for these three future NBA Hall of Famers:

ESPN's KG Machine
kg-warriors-trade.jpg

Adonal Foyle
Sure, he has career averages of 4.4ppg and 5.1rpg, but there's a reason Citizen Foyle has been the face of the Warriors' franchise for over a decade- and no it's not because of The Shot Heard Around the World.

foyle-read.jpg
Read to Achieve!

It's because the man is a glue guy that fully grasps that democracy does truly matter- every team needs one of those! Remember, the Warriors have never lost a playoff game with Adonal on the squad. He's just that good. Seriously, he's so good that the Warriors passed up the opportunity to land Jordan and Pippen 2.0.

Patrick O'Bryant
The Notorious P.O.B. has flat out dominated the NBA competition this season. He's been so good that Commish David Stern and Oakland's resident hoops expert Don Nelson decided that it was just unfair to see him single-handedly destroy NBA frontlines nightly that they sent him down to the D-League. In the D-League POB's learned some more BAAAD tricks from THE BEST.

As an added bonus POB will also bring the ladies to the Target Center in Minny!

Al Harrington
Al's only been with the Dubs for a few short months (Thank goodness for that heist of the Indiana Posers, see: The Warriors & Pacers Blockbuster Trade: Throwing Up W's and L's and A Reality Check on the Blockbuster Trade between the Warriors and Pacers), but TMNHarrington's quickly become a big fan favorite in the Bay Area.

Al Harrington: By day tweener forward for the Dubs, but by night he's a hero in a half shell!

Think this scouting report of Adonal Foyle, Patrick O'Bryant, and Al Harrington is a little questionable? Who cares? We're talking about Kevin McHale here! Don't forget- the Warriors may have wasted one lottery pick on Joe Smith, but McHale wasted five!

Look, if the Timberwolves' fans (yes, all 3 of you) aren't happy about this trade we might be persuaded to throw in a Warrior Girl or two to seal the deal... actually, on second thought I don't think so. Their excellence has been the one constant for this pitiful franchise.

3. KG would love the Yay Area and the Yay would have nothing but love for him.
In the end it all really boils down to what makes Kevin happy and you can bet your last Cabarkapa that KG would be extremely happy in the Bay Area. I'm not even kidding:

a) KG and Nellieball are a match made in heaven.
Warrior head coach Don Nelson is a hoops innovator who plays by his own rules. The man loves small ball and if elephant killer Earl Boykins was still on the Warriors, you can bet Nellie would try to play him at Center at least once during theseason.

KG is a hoops freak. He likes to says he's 6'12, but the funny thing is he can handle the rock and drop dimes better than many Point Guards in the league. Plus, Garnett has some nice range on his jumper and great footwork. If you thought Nellie letting Manute Bol drain shots from downtown was fun(ny), then wait till you see what he'll do with KG.

With KG on the Warriors, Nellie is ready to FIGHT THE POWER!

b) KG Loves India and the Bay = India Central.
It's no secret that KG Loves India and the Bay Area is filled with Indians from the North, South, West, East, and everyone in between. Whether KG's in the mood for a little South Indian favorites like dhosa, idli, and sambhar from Updupi Palace and Saravana Bhavan or some North Indian flavas from the tandoor via Pakwan and Shalimar, the Bay's got the man covered.

KG's replica Taj Mahal crib right off 880 South in Fremont.

c) NBA Champs 2008-2012.
Boom Dizzle + JRich + Jax + KG + Andris + Ellis to the Rim + Barnes Baby! + Kabuki = Fun Police 2k8. Throw in a little Yi Movement and the Warriors are absolutely golden for a 4 straight titles. Oh what the heck? Make it 12 straight titles. Warriors Nation deserves it after The Dirty Dozen (Part I | Part II | Part III).

The irony of your post
Is that the KG movement has ended.  He would only want to come play with our entire squad we have now, if at all, and we'd have to give up half our squad to get him.   It's over, the KG thing isn't happening, we got our playoff team right here, and other movements like the Yi or Noah movement are probably more likely, if even at all possible now =(

If War brings Peace, Dubz' wit it then!

yea...
I miss Quite Frankly too! that show was bomb, I love Stephen A Smith!

Anyway, in all seriousness, who do you think we could trade for KG?  Is Pietrus, POB, Harrington, and our first round pick legit?

by bradyk2 on Mar 21, 2007 8:49 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

other teams could offer more
As good as Durant and Oden could be, any team would trade the #1 pick or #2 pick in this year's draft to help acquire KG. For example the Celtics have alot of young players on their roster and could end up with the first or second pick. Nothing we can offer can compete with that. I dunno if the Celtics are willing to deal though because I've read that they value their young guys more than the rest of the league does. For example when they were in the Iverson sweepstakes they deemed Al Jefferson untouchable (and his play this year has validated that stance). Bulls also have alot of assets to potentially offer; it should be a very interesting summer

I'm with you 100%
well, except for the suggestion that Isiah Thomas is underrated as a coach.  I think he's been pretty well called out as a fraud.

by Ray of Lite on Mar 21, 2007 9:12 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

So? Dolan's a moron
As a recent profile in The New Yorker made clear, he's an unaccomplished rich kid who, even within his own organization, is considered as neither bright nor judicious in his business dealings.  From what I can tell, he gave that contract extension with little reason -- and would just as easily fire Thomas.

"Isaiah's underrated coaching" !??
Dude, what?!

I have been with you guys 100%.  It is so nice to have some media voices representing the west coast in the sports world for once, but you guys are smoking something genetically manipulated if you think Isaiah is underrated.  Though management is just as much to blame, Isaiah is one of the few GM's who could come into a terrible Knicks situation and actually make it worse.  And Starbury and KG?  You don't remember how Marbury burned KG in Minnesota for his own ego just when things were building there?  Why would he ever want to play with him again?  Plus, Marbury's career is done.  He was never more than a strong attacker to the basket and is learning too little too late about team and winning basketball.  New York would be a disaster for KG.  Maybe if the Garden got sold and they fired Isaiah and redid the roster from scratch, around KG, there might be chance.  But as it stands today, no way.

by walkerp on Mar 21, 2007 10:15 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm not so sure Isaiah is going to get fired
considering he got his contract extended last week... Atma never said Isaiah was a good GM, he said he was an underrated coach. Peronsally, I've heard this before and I think his underratedness is overrated (if that makes any sense) because the Knicks have had alot of close victories. Isaiah's really underrated at drafting, I can't remember off the top of my head but the list of players he's drafted is impressive, highlighted by T-Mac and David Lee. The Knicks should get someone else to handle everything else a GM does and just have Isaiah draft and coach. And Starbury's not done -he's averaged 22 ppg, 5.5 dimes and over 3 3's per game in the last month. Sorry for the long post but don't be dissing Atma!

As you can guess, I agree with Walkerp on this
But I don't see how his comments in any way dissed Atma.

by Ray of Lite on Mar 22, 2007 12:11 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He said
that Atma's smoking something by calling Isaiah's coaching underrated. But then he said Isaiah's a horrible GM (which he is) and should be fired, but that has nothing to do with his coaching. Isaiah does seem to be a good coach based on this year, but I don't agree he's underrated simply because the media has covered his coaching decently from what I've seen.

Real Quick on Isiah Thomas
Zeke was a superstar player and overcame a lot of obstacles to become a very successful and wealthy man. He deserves a ton of credit. The media has always seemed to have some sort of vendetta against him and I'm not really sure why.

As far as his coaching/ VP-GM, here's my view:

  • Isiah is a pretty good head coach. The Knicks roster really seems to want to play hard for him. Even Stevie Franchise is showing signs being a good player again.
  • The man just knows how to draft- TMac, Camby, David Lee, Channing Frye, NateRob, and even Renaldo. Isiah is a shrewd judge of talent.
  • Isiah's problem (and it could just be a consequence of working for Dolan) is his complete mismanagement and poor grasp of the NBA salary's cap. He just doesn't know how to hand out extensions, sign free agent deals, or think a few years down the line capwise. Maybe he'll learn.
I actually think he's a better front office person than Chris Mullin. Both have dished out some terrible bad contracts, but at least Isiah overpays and trades for talented players with big contracts (Jerome James the blatant exception).

i think...
everyone from GSoM should go to Kevin Garnett's website like I did, and write him letters begging him to come to the Warriors, and letting him know that he would be loved by the fans as well as have a winning team. With enough letters he will be convinced and see just how much we love him here in the BAY! If he doesnt push for a trade here, then maybe he will even come in free agency in a couple years. Go post on Kevingarnett.com everyone! I honestly did this already and im not sure if it ever got to him, but with enough of you, im sure the message will get through.

by ilubthedubs on Mar 21, 2007 10:50 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

hahah
as much as I want him here, that trade will never happen! Foyle cost a lot and he sucks, POB is a realllllllllllllly big project, and well Al Harrington is Al Harrington and he would be the only guy thats good in that swap.  If he ends up leaving the t'wolves I bet its to a team that you guys didn't list, thats usually the case when we talk trades hahah.

Send Al back to the Pacers
I'm not sure what Larry was thinking when he gave up Baby Al to Golden State in the so called block buster trade but as you may have noticed the Pacers got hosed in the deal. After working all summer to reaquire harrington we deal him off again? You can keep Jackson but pleese send Al back home again...:)  BTW..Stevey Jackson had become the most detested player of all time for the pacers...Quite the honor in these parts..hope he doesn't 'ARTEST' your team.

hahhaa.
Hahaha. What happened to Mike and Troy being exactly what that Pacers team needed to play TEAM ball?

Hosed.

Yes, we need KG in Golden State.
Send Baron, Adonal, & Pat O'

Baron
Are you out of your mind? He is the reason we are doing so good right now. If we traded him away who would run the team?

by Psion on Mar 21, 2007 1:14 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

it would be great
if we can make that trade, but I like Harrington, is there any possible way to just give 2 picks instead of TMNT?

also
no offense, but Foyle's contract is so big, I wonder  what team would get him

Wow...
"throw in a Warrior girl or two"?  They're not just some poker chips, you jerk; they got feelings too!...  just kidding.  I actually think if Boston can land a good vet next year and get rid of some of their youths, then they can be a top team in the East next year.

West - Allen/Rondo - Pierce/Gomes - Garnett - Jefferson sounds pretty deadly.

by MVP on Mar 21, 2007 3:51 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

agreed!
we got some MVP type cheerleaders man! if we trade away some of them, it might go down like the mitch richmond trade or us trading away Chamberlain way way back. there's no way we'll get the same amt. back for our beloved W girls.

oh, I forgot
it's Danny Ainge we're talking about here. haha

KG isnt our priority
our priority right now is figuring out how we can keep andris and ellis without losing richardson or davis. losing any of these guys is going to really hurt us. KG would only add fuel to the fire
