Last night the Clippers came through in the clutch in Phoenix and the Warriors utterly destroyed the Mavs' JV squad at home in Oakland. So, as De La Soul would say Stakes is High! If the Warriors win or the Clippers lose tonight, the Dubs are playoff bound and the 12 year curse is finally over.

A Look Back
Last summer pre-Nellie, pre-Barnes, pre-Action Jackson, pre-TMNHarrington, pre-highway robbery of the Indiana Pacers, and pre-We Believe Playoff, the GSoM crew wrote this 2006-2007 Warriors preview for DIME magazine:

I'll always love that old skool Souls of Mischief and Bay Area classic track, but Infinity ends now. It's time for the curse to end.

Why will it end? From the piece Fantasy Junkie and I wrote for ESPN's 2006-2007 Golden State Warriors preview:

Guess who was the head coach of the Warriors the last time they made the playoffs? (Hint: It wasn't Mike Montgomery, Eric Musselman, Brian Winters, Dave Cowens, Garry St. Jean, PJ Carlesimo, Rick Adelman, or even Bob "NBA Cares" Lanier.)

That's right: Don Nelson.

Believe this:

  • The Warriors are 15-5 in their last 20 games.
  • There is only 1 team in the entire league that has accumulated more home wins than the Warriors this season.
  • The Dubs have won 3 of their last 4 road games.
  • At the end of yesterday's last home game of the regular season Al Harrington exclaimed ""Y'all are going to see us next week, playing Dallas or Phoenix" to the Warrior faithful.
  • The Warriors put up 106.3 points per game, while the Blazers put up 94.1 this season.
  • The Blazers have absolutely nothing to play for.
  • Brandon Roy, Zack Randolph, LaMarcus Aldridge, Joel Przybilla, and Darius Miles (remember him?) will all be in street clothes tomorrow evening, some at the Rose Garden and others- well, who knows where?
  • The season series is split between the Warriors and Blazers: Nov 3 W 102-89 | Mar 11 L 87-106
  • The Blazers have been to the playoffs in the past 12 years, while the Warriors haven't.
  • Nellie has one million reasons to take the Warriors to the playoffs this season.
  • The Magic 8 Ball said that the Warriors were making the playoffs this year WITHOUT A DOUBT back in October.

But NONE of that matters right now. Throw it all out the door. All that matters is getting a win tonight or watching the Clippers lose one to the Hornets in La-La land.

12 years, 41 wins, 40 losses, and tonight my friends is THE night that decides everything. It could finally be the end of the curse that has haunted Warriors Nation for over a decade. Win number 42 is over a decade in the making.

The transformation of this team mid-season ranks as one of the funnest memories in recent Bay Area sports history.  Tonight is our night - Dizzle and the boys will not disappoint, as there is too much mojo going on here...

     I expect GS to win tonight and make the playoffs and I hope the Lakers will lose tonight so GS can play the Suns instead of the Mavericks in the first round of the playoffs.  If GS plays the Suns in the playoffs I would see a series between these teams two as a near tossup.which either team could easily win.

The trade
     At the time of GS' mid-season trade I firmly believed this trade would help GS at least in the short term, but I had no idea it would help them this much. Since this trade GS has only been healthy since Late March, and GS has won 15 and lost only 5 since that time while playing the toughest part of their schedule. 2 of their 5 losses came against the spurs one came at Utah, one at the Lakers, and one at Portland in a game GS clearly did not try to win in  order r to save their energy for the next evening when hey beat Dallas at home ending the Mavericks lo0ngest winning streak of the season (a 17 game streak).  GS also beat the Suns at home during this stretch, and started this stretch by winning by a large margin in Detroit.in teir first game since the trade with all their starters playing.

More on the trade
     It is a recent phenomenon that NBA teams have been able to incorporate important new players as quickly and as effectively as GS has done this season. The first time a team acquired an important player in a mid-Season trade and won a championship in the same season was when the pistons did this with Rasheed Wallace in 2004. The second time was the next season when the spurs obtained Nazr Mohammed at the trading deadline with Mohammeed becoming the spurs 6th most important player in that years playoff run (though Mohammed started for the spurs, Horry was more valuable to the spurs in that years playoffs. The ability to incorporate new players more quickly into teams is a result of superior coaching and greater communication between coaches and general managers. As the salaries of coaches and managers have increased faster than the cost of living, so has the level of coaching, just as the level of play in sports has also risen as salaries have risen.. This is so primarily to greater competition both for coaching spots and playing spots in the NBA. There was a time when players from many nations did not dream of playing in the NBA, but the money is so great that now everyone wants a piece of it. Ours is the richest society in the history of our world, and most of us have much more disposable income (defined as money we don't really need) than any people have had in the past, and a great deal of this money goes to sports. We could try to save our souls by instead giving money we don't need to some of the many poor people in our world,  but where's the fun in that, especially when it's so easy for us to pretend that our souls are not in grave danger, and to pretend we have not been told to give to all who ask of us and to ask for nothing in return.

How sport can be positive
I try to remember I have been told to give alms and by doing so make all things clean to me, and in order to do this, I try to spend no money on sports, but I still spend significant time and energy on sports.  Am I a hypocrite for doing this.  I believe not because I often get bored and because most alternatives to sports available to me involve watching are instances in which people disregard the command we have received not to resist evil by taking part in governments that encourage them to resist evil in many ways, (especially by encouraging them to take part in wars.)

Nelson's Candor
    One of the things I love to see in sports is candor because I often love to see the inner workings of people's minds without the obsfucation that usually keeps other people's thought's hidden. When after GS fell to 26-34, Nelson said that he did not believe GS would make this year's playoffs, He was not making things seem worse than they were for GS, but was instead sharing his honest thoughts, band history bears Nelson out on this.  Far fewer than 5% of all teams who have fallen 8 games below 500 so late in a season have gone on to make the playoffs, and in a year like this one in which it was obvious to Nelson that a team would have to come close to .500 to make the western conference playoffs this percentage is even smaller (probably close to 1%).  So when Nelson told us He did not believe GS would make the playoffs He was probably actually telling us what he had already thought for a number of games. The fact that GS probably will make the playoffs this year is not a sign that Nelson was misleading us, but is instead a sign of how extraordinary the GS run since that point has been. Nelson knew His team would soon be healthy for the first time since the trade and I'm sure he thought his team would then be a good one, but it did appear to everyone watching that GS had dug too deep a hole for even a good team to climb out of so late in a season.  And for most good teams it would have been too deep a hole. Nelson did not realize how good his team would be when healthy, and neither did the rest of us.

Confidence
While Nelson is as good a strategist (at least in short-term situations) as any NBA coach, what Nelson gives to GS that most NBA coaches cannot give is the confidence he inspires in His players. All five Golden State starters are more confident in their team and in their coax than at any other time in their NBAS careers and this confidence is leading all of these players to play much better than they ever have before. All five are highly emotional players, and NBA players on average are very emotional people to begin with. This is why inspiring confidence is so important in the NBA. Players must believe they can win before they can win. more than players though, fans at NBA games attend those games primarily for the emotional highs they sometimes get from those games. Emotionalism is so dominant among fans that fans become delusional to the point of thinking that throwing objects at people will not start a fight. I saw the Detroit fight live, so I know that Artest was no angel, but from the beginning I said that any suspension of Artest and Jackson should be the same as it would be for fighting with another player who had thrown something at him. I knew it was wrong to create second-class citizens who fans could abuse because they had paid an exorbitant amount of money for their seats and for the right to take part in a Dionysian ritual in which opposing players were the demons on which they beat, and most other people in the United States also saw this before the NBA corrupted their minds. I know this because later that evening I responded to espn polls on suspensions and saw that most other respondents proposed suspensions that were almost reasonable. ESPN polls only reflected the NBA's credo of pay us enough money and we'll let you treat players like second-class citizens', after the NBA had corrupted our thinking and our emotions. The fact that fans want to treat players like second-class citizens to begin with is a sign of the evil in our society. I swear that under all circumstances (including NBA gamers) I will not start a fight in any way from throwing a punch it throwing a drink. Though the first drink thrown at Artest was nearly empty, Artest was correct to think that soon hard and dangerous things would be thrown at him as in fact many batteries soon were thrown at him. His fighting did not help him, but wars do not help anyone who fights in them, and yet most of us sometimes say that we support wars. Any person who even tries to be logical, and who supports wars as we currently fight wars, should also support Artest's decision to fight. Anyone who will not swear not to start a fight as I have sworn above should not be allowed into any place that has civilized people in it or that might have civilized people in it (including NBA arenas). Along with any suspensions Detroit should also have lost a number of important home games because the vast majority of Detroit fans present joined in throwing batteries at Indiana players, and some precaution should have been taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future, but the NBA is all about making short-term money so this never happened.

I'm at work right now, and after reading Blazerdave's letter and thinking about what tonight can possibly mean, I started to get teary-eyed. My Co-worker caught and asked me what that was about so I had to puff up my chest and explain to him that "the allergy index must be high today" or something like that. If everything goes well tonight, I can finally forget that for one whole season our starting lineup was pretty much Mookie, Vonteego, Tony Farmer, Jason Caffey, and Foyle(?). WE BELIEVE PLAYOFF!!!

If GS wins a Playoff series / MVP
If GS wins a first round series against the Suns and then wins at least 2 games against the Spurs, first of all, GS will have completed a very good season this year, in which they will have to be ranked somewhere between 3rd and 8th among all teams depending on how Miami, Detroit, Houston, Utah, Chicago, and Denver perform in the playoffs, and secondly they will have put themselves in a good position to possibly win a championship in the near future. In spite of His regular season success, Nelson also stands out as a coach who has never come close to winning a championship. It would be nice if He could change this. In his best year with Dallas (2002-03), Dallas won 2 games against the eventual champion Spurs, but so did every team that played the spurs in the playoffs, (including the Suns with Stephan Mar bury as their best player, The Nets with Kidd, and the Lakers with O'Neal, and Bryant - a teen probably far superior to the Noritz/Nash Mavericks). What most people ignore about the mavericks is that with Howard's and especially Nowitzki's ability to create their own shots The Mavericks do not need a passer at the point nearly as much as they need a point guard who can get his own shot without having to be a threat to pass to open up lanes like Nash. In this capacity Terry if clearly far superior to Nash, and for this reason the Mavericks are a much better team with Terry than with Nash. Conversely Phoenix with it's great finishers in Stoudemire and Marion needs a passing point guard and for this reason the Suns are a much better team with Nash than they would be with any other point guard.  When the NBA made some sense the MVP award usually went to the best player on a championship team. Clearly the MVP award should be given after a season ends but before the late 90s voters usually got around this difficulty by voting for the best player on the team that had won a championship the year before Now the MVP award has become such a joke that for the last two years it has gone to a player on a team that has not come close to winning a championship. Just reflect for a moment on the fact that Shaq has only won one MVP award, and then ask yourself how often Shaq was actually the most valuable player in the league. In His best season 2000-01 when Shaq led the Lakers to a 15-1 playoff record, He did moot win the MVP award. Nelson also twice took Milwaukee to conference finals but Milwaukee was beaten handily on both occasions. More important, though, is the positive effect Nelson has had on many people He has worked with. When Nelson came to GS in 2006 He said He was coming to groom assistant coach Keith Smart to be a successful head coach as he had groomed Avery Johnson. If Nelson could do this, this legacy would be far more important than any championship. And anyway Melon got five championships as a player (3 with Russell as teams leader, 2 with Havelock as team leader), so maybe He's already hit His limit.

got to post it
I haven't posted anything in this blog till now (I have been reeding this blog for a while).. but you know - I'm doing it right now.. I'm  Beans fan from Latvia and this season I've become a hardcore (as you say) warriors fan (I don't even care how good beans has played - warriors victory is far more important for me now, what I can't say about the time about year or even 5 months ago), because they certainly have the best fans in basketball - c'mon - your team is not the greatest one.. In Latvia it is very early morning when warriors usually play (5-6am), but I've managed to get some online streams to be able to watch games and cheer for them during the games. What I want to say? Golden State mania has spread all over the world!

P.S. I never thought, that I will sacrifice my sleep on constant basis in order to watch Dubs games..

     thank you for giving up sleep.  Latvia's long summer nights seem to have helped Andris by giving him more time to work on his very good shot.  I know that many NBA players have come from Lithuania but Andris is the first NBA player from Latvia I am aware of.  Hopefully the first of many.  Will Estonia be next?

Unbelievable
Back in February/March, it was hard to believe that the Warriors would be here, over .500, and in control of their own destiny.  To all the Warriors I thank you for your effort and intensity.  The Warriors have shown me that its not just about $$$, that pride still exists in the NBA.  Thanks.

The keys have been SJax providing consistent and clutch outside shooting, JRich doing all the little things necessary, and Baron providing the superstar element when needed.  The Warriors are dangerous, look out Dallas/Phoenix.

I really enjoyed your post about Nellie bieng a legacy but I really think he deserves a championship bieng a coach as well(especially after the job he's done here in such a short time!)...Popavich already has a couple and avery is on the verge of one so why not the teacher for once!!!

He belives he can turn this team into a championship team. This is the closes any of his teams in their first years has been to the playoffs, except for his first year with the Warriors. His fist time with the Warriors is the only team to make playoffs his first year coaching for them. The Mavs only won 16 games his first year, 16 games to 41 or 42. This is why he came out of retirement. Championship in one of the next two years, shoot maybe this year. If he can change a 16 win team into a NBA powerhouse, what can he do to a team that can win 41 or 42 in his first year?

Ahhh yes, the three most beautiful words in the English language! After all the years and watching nearly every game the last two years via League Pass down in LA (historically a tough place to be a Dubs fan) I can't wait for tonight's game. This site is amazing. After the trade I went to the Pacers' blog site, and it was soooo boring compared to this one - very little eye candy (graphics) and the margins were almost empty of diaries and other assorted goodies. In fact, I think this site is responsible for the Warriors' rebirth, and I want to thank all of you who run the show here. You all do us a great service!

aching for a win
Fitzgerald and Barnett got it right last night.  In the first quarter last night, when it was like 4-0 in favor of the Mavericks, the crowd was getting uncomfortable.  I was hanging on every possession.  And Fitzgerald made the comment that the "fans were aching".  12 playoff less seasons will do that.  I love the Warriors, and tonight is the night.  We have to win this game, and then we have to shove it right down Dallas' throats and go all the way.  Can you imagine an 8-seed winning the NBA title?  I will accept no less.  ;)

It's time.  Oh yes, it is time.  The aching must end.  LET'S GO WARRIORS!

     Thank you for sacrificing sleep.  It seems as if the Long Latvian summer nights have helped Andris by giving Him more time to develop his very good shot.  (small comfort on Dec. 21 I know).  I know that many NBA players have come from Lithuania, but Andris is the first NBA player from Lithuania I am aware of.  Hopefully the first of many.  Will Estonia be next?

we believe playoff!
i've been to a lot of home games this season. more than any year of me being a warrior fan. it's all worth it. i was there when they lost the laker game thinking it'll be same as last year and the years before. i was there when we were spanked by the spurs by 40, the 2nd year in a row i watched my beloved warriors getting massacred by the spusr at the arena. but i was there also when baron drilled that 3 pt shot to bury the rockets and the last 2nd shot by monta against the nets to eke out a cluth win. i know i'm blabbing. i just want to say i'm really proud to be a warrior fan through thick and thin and i know we all deserve 2nite if/when we get in the playoffs. i know i'm going to end up crying like a bitch 2nite when they get in. and i don't give a damn. lol

Uhm, how about the most obvious? The Mavericks took care of their business early, which gives him the right to rest his starters as much as he wants down the stretch.

playoff match-ups
If the Mavericks maintain their lead over Seattle tonight, The Mavericks will have won 143 of Avery Johnson's first 182 regular season games as head coach, (easily the best regular season start a head coach has ever had).  I believe that Phil Jackson won close to 130 of his first 182 games as head coach, and I know that Jackson won 183 of his first 246 games as head coach, (a total Avery Johnson will beat if the Mavericks win 41 of their first 64 games next year).  For the foreseeable future Jackson is the only head coach who will challenge Johnson for the best regular season record, and over time will probably be one of only three coaches from the past who will challenge Johnson in post-season success.   This is one reason why the playoff match-up that will occur between the Mavericks and the Lakers if the Kings maintain their early second half lead over the Lakers, will be a memorable match-up.  Jackson may retire soon, so this may be the only playoff meeting between two of the best NBA head coaches ever.  Because Johnson's success is refuting many foolish things that have been said about African American's, I have a rooting interest in seeing Johnson obtain every coaching record he can, so I do not mind the fact that the Mavericks are far superior to the Lakers this year, and will almost certainly give Johnson a victory in this playoff series.  This rooting interest I have in Johnson also makes me especially hopeful that the Kings win and that the Mavericks not have to play Golden State until the third round, if then, because I want to root for GS in this year's playoffs but I do not want to root against the Mavericks or the Spurs.
