A Maverick Perspective on their L's this Season

The Enemy

Here we go. Fellow SB Nation hoops blog, Mavs Moneyball has started to explain away their 3 losses to the Warriors this season. The Mavs Losses to Golden State in Context

You're going to hear and read A LOT about the Mavs being 0-3 against the Warriors this season. It's important to look beyond the face value of that record...In my opinion, the first and third game should be ignored. That does leave the ugliest loss, but what can be taken away from one game? Plenty of things happened in that game that I don't have any reason to believe will happen in the playoffs.

Excuses. Excuses. All the "explanations" and excuses for why the Mavericks got swept in the season series just sounds like some fans who are scared of facing the Warriors. Look you got beat, suck it up and deal with it. The Warriors were a better team on those days. I could explain why those weren't bigger wins too due to some circumstances with the Warriors, but I won't. We won, they lost. They're a 67 win team, they should have nothing to fear or excuse.

What's missing from the article? Well, not once does it say anything about the Warriors actually playing a good game. Such as in game 2, the reason Dirk had one of his worst games was because Stephen Jackson played great defense. The reason the Mavs had so many turnovers is because the Warriors have greatly improved their defense and lead the league in steals. I'm not saying it's going to happen again, but there are reasons why the Warriors won.

Look Maverick fans clearly have the upper hand in any trash talk. They went to the finals last year and they've been in the playoffs year after year. What they don't have is that hunger that we Warrior fans have. We've been starving for a long long time and when the Mavs come to Oakland, you can be sure we'll be louder than the Maverick fans in Dallas. For an example of some spoiled Mavs fans, check out the comment left by chevs10zr2:

goldenstateofmind

just looked at their website... you would've thought they just won the championship!! WOW they are so pumped up and excited just to be there! Even some of the brightsideofthesun guys have gone over there and congratulated them!! Haha... this is too funny. Little do they know, their days of celebrating will come to an end after 5 games.
Clearly, he's spoiled by the Mavericks and clearly, he's a bandwagon Maverick fan. I say he's a bandwagon Maverick fan because he doesn't know about the pain and suffering endured by Maverick fans before Nellie went to Dallas. If he did, he'd realize that the excitement in the Bay, is no different than the excitement in Dallas years ago. Actually I don't even have to explain it. He got educated by someone on his own site, dirk41:
Regarding the reaction on goldenstateofmind, remember how it felt for long-suffering Mavs fans when we made the playoffs after an 11-year drought (the longest at the time) in the 2000-2001 season?

It DID feel like winning a championship. There were no expectations and we were able to upset the Jazz in 5 after going down two games. Then, in the next round, we lost to the Spurs 4 games to 1. I didn't care about Round 2 -- it was rewarding enough to see progress. The tough thing about being a Mavs fan is now the only progress left is winning the Finals, which to me is the second-hardest trophy to win (Stanley Cup being the hardest).

The Warriors are extremely dangerous because they're the hottest team in the league right now (winning 9 out of their last 10), and can play loose. That one loss was to the Spurs in a rout -- I bet the Mavs scouts and coaches will look at that DVD.

It's great for the NBA to have a team with a loyal fan base like those in the Bay Area in the playoffs. I wish them all the best in the future, but the Mavs time is now.

Blog battles baby. The gauntlet has been thrown down. The only way to get the Mavs fans from talking trash, is to just shut them up by winning. Let's go Warriors.

A look back at the Warriors-Mavs regular season series this year:

funny thing..
is how they said "game will be over in 5" .. does anyone else find it odd that instead of just outright domination, they gave the Warriors some credit by giving them one game? sounds like insecurity to me...unless they think it's a best of 9...?

Nothing wrong with "excuses"
Especially considering what team we're rooting for here. Of course, the only game they can really dismiss is the last one when they didn't even try to battle us.

All bickering aside, I'm sure both sides can agree that the first real fight will happen this Sunday. I can't wait!

Man I'm excited!
I usually try to watch all the playoff games every season (just like how I try to make time for and watch every televised Warrior game) and being in there makes it so much sweeter!  My heart says a nice ass kicking with the Warriors ending it in 5 (the Mavs are the best team this season... gotta give 'em one) but my mind is saying Warriors in 7... with close games and plenty of clutch shots by Richardson/Davis and Dirk alike.  Either way I smell an upset!  UNSTOPPABLE BABY!!!
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

I just wanted to say:
You'll be seeing a lot of me, so I look forward to more comments like, "...just you wiat, we'll sweep them 4-0!!!!"

You'll be reading my favorite selections from this season, and of course, all the comments to come!

Enjoy being pimpsmacked by a superior team.

I am here to mock your inadequacy.

I don't think he is
totally of base with a lot of this but he is flawed in his logic when he talks about the roster not being set for the Mavs in the first loss and Golden State being a different team last year (excusing the Mavs loses in the last two years) yet goes on to look at the W's turnovers, free throw percentage, record and points allowed for the whole year...can't have it both ways.  Look at the team they have now.

DON'T FORGET
about MARK CUBAN and his deep, deep, deep, deep, deep pockets!  If we had an owner that would have dropped $$$ like he would on players ahem, I'm sure we would have ended our playoff drought years ago!

MAVS fans are definitely spoiled, by CUBAN that is!  They need to watch what they say though, because I thought at one point during the season CUBAN actually thought about selling the team!  I wonder what MAVS blogger chevs10zr2 would say then!

GOOD LUCK to us, but they're the ones that will be needing it!

GO WARRIORS...TO THE NBA FINALS!!!

figures
they would try to make excuses about every loss. thats pathetic. the warriors have outplayed them the last two seasons. get over it.

WHO WROTE THAT ARTICLE???
He must be an IDIOT!!!  Here are my points to counter some of his so-called points:
  1. He doesn't make any point in #9.  What that they both haven't played each other at full strength while both teams have peaked?  Well I'm waiting for the sun and moon to align again for another solar eclipse, but I know that doesn't happen very often!  Excuses!
  2. The W's stink defensively?  Okay so we're not the best defensive team in terms of points given up, but we're tops in steals and causing turnovers!  And doesn't this guy recall the time when the MAVS (coached by yours truly NELLIE) didn't play defense either and relied on their "juggernaut" of an offense?  Excuses!
  3. Smallball vs. Allball?  What the hell is Allball?  Is that him grabbing his balls while watching the game or something?  Did he forget that when NELLIE coached there, he actually loaded up on Bigball to throw out at SHAQ?  What's the difference?  Only that Smallball actually works!  Start Devean George? haha  And then what?  Excuses!
  4. Playing loose and having the kind of free-wheeling offense the W's play are 2 different things!  I know NELLIE wouldn't slow the game down, because it's not what the W's do best!  Besides, although the MAVS could score in the 100's during the time NELLIE coached them in the playoffs, they weren't exactly a run-n-gun type team!  So I don't have any doubts that NELLIE will let the team run, run and run some more! Excuses!
  5. I think because of the fact that the W's haven't been in the PLAYOFFS for so long, that they'll definitely want to cherish it and do what they can to stay in contention!  We're not just happy to be in the PLAYOFFS and we didn't just get there to be happy and go home!  It's a different ballgame now and we're in it to win it!  Excuses!
  6. Hopefully we won't need a "Mr. Big Shot", because we'll be playing as a team, which was exemplified last night!  Passing the ball and playing team defense!  And besides, I wouldn't want anybody else to take a big shot other than BOOM DIZZLE, or did Mr. article guy forget about him?  Maybe he should check out the games against HOUSTON and SEATTLE!  Excuses!
And finally...

1. He talks about the MAVS remembering last season and having to wait a whole year to get back into the PLAYOFFS and hopefully back in the NBA FINALS, but he needs to remember too, that the W's haven't been to the PLAYOFFS in 13 freakin long years!

Game 1 this weekend against Golden State (or whomever) has been almost a year in the waiting, almost a year in the making.

1 year...13 years!  13 years is more than a decade in the making!  Hmmm...who do you think wants it more?  The W's will definitely ride this HIGH into the PLAYOFFS and hopefully all the way to the NBA FINALS!!!  This is a different atmosphere that the W's (except for JAX) and the WARRIORS NATION know anything about, but who cares!  If the W's play the way we know they can, anything is possible...just like making the PLAYOFFS after 13 years!

GO WARRIORS...TO THE NBA FINALS!!!

"If you build around them...they will come!"

I luv it!

ok, really though,
they can't complain or make excuses about going 0-3 against us. A win is a win, and a loss is a loss, full roster or not. Their excuses are lame. I honestly don't think we made excuses for whenever the Warriors lost. We knew that many of our losses came to bad defense, poor free throw shooting, or stagnate offense; even with injuries and the Murphleavy duo on our team. Props to dirk41, he seems to be a shrewd basketball fan. Good luck to both teams, and we're gonna be watching a good series.

one exception maybe
the loss to the wizards on the technical after time expired. but technically that's not an excuse right?

We all know that last game
was meaningless in this analysis so no a win isn't a win but the excuses for last year are weak

J-Rich and Baron are still here and they give the Mavs guards touble

that dude sounds like he knows his hoops, much respect to him. kinda funny tho that fans of a 67 win team has to explain their losses to their playoff opponent just to make themselves feel better

seriously, he must be a bandwagon mavs fan because before Nellie rebuilt that team from the ground up, they were worse than us, even in our darker years.

One loss to the spurs?!?!
dirk41 posted something i thought was pretty interesting: "The Warriors are extremely dangerous because they're the hottest team in the league right now (winning 9 out of their last 10), and can play loose. That one loss was to the Spurs in a rout -- I bet the Mavs scouts and coaches will look at that DVD." How did the Dubs loose and do the Dubs have the personel to counter this game plan?
rubbadubdub thanx for the playoffs!!!

by RubberDubDubs on Apr 20, 2007 1:13 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I think the reason for two losses might be
that the warriors run a high octane offense so catching the spurs on two back to back occasions would help (the dubs don't play Dallas on back to back games in the playoffs giving them the opportunity to recover)...also the fact that mepmphis (runs with the dubs) and they helped tire them out for the match up against the spurs and the lakers won in a close game and helped to tire out the dubs again after a long road trip to come back home and face the Spurs...im not sure about the game because I wasn't able to watch both match ups with the Spurs only the first one (where we owned them with Baron out of the line up and the dunmurphy twins)which by the way was not a back to back...
rubbadubdub thanx for the playoffs!!!
