Recap: Blazers 98, Warriors PLAYOFFS!!- UNSTOPPABLE BABY!!
OH MY! I've done so many recaps in my 2 years blogging the Warriors, including some big wins and some painful losses, but doing tonight's recap is an honor. Unfortunately I really don't know what to say. I'm speechless...

And so it ends!
So, I'll just follow what my mom always said-- BE THANKFUL.
Thank You's
1) ONE through 14- Baron Davis aka Boom Dizzle: Don't call it a comeback! A REAL All Star.
- Jason Richardson aka JRich or Die Flying: No apologies necessary.
- Monta Ellis aka Ellis to the Rim: The Rook-Soph game was only the beginning.
- Andris Biedrins aka Dris: The best Latvian player in the association. No question!
- Stephen Jackson aka Action Jackson: Maybe the most underrated all-around player in the league.
- Al Harrington aka TMNHarrington: Who knew he could put the clamps down on guys like Yao Ming?
- Adonal Foyle aka The 'Don: The only thing that matters more than democracy? PLAYOFFS!
- Mickael Pietrus aka MP2: Air France is the most entertaining flight out there. Even better than Southwest!
- Matt Barnes aka Barnes Baby!: Before this year Barnes had made 10 3's in his entire NBA career. This year? Over 100.
- Josh Powell aka Josh POWell: Sweet jumper, tough player.
- Sarunas Jasikevicius aka Sarunas: A Warrior who can hit free throws!
- Kelenna Azubuike aka Kabuki: This D-League pickup was essentially like getting an extra lottery pick in the awful 2006 NBA Draft.
- Patrick O'Bryant aka The Notorious P.O.B.: The first lottery pick ever sent down to the NBDL? Another Warrior first!
- Zarko Cabarkapa aka The Zark Man: I'm so excited about the end of the curse I think I'm going to throw up all over my cabarkapa!

Stephen puts the Action in Jackson!
2) Nellie! Nellie! Nellie!
Ladies and gentleman, here's your 2006-2007 NBA Coach of the Year...

Don Nelson has been a gift from the basketball gods. How many coaches can say they've ended a 12 year curse- that they helped start?

Nellie got us out of jail!
3) Chris Mullin and Rod Higgins
Mullie and Higgy's first two years in the Warriors' front office were a complete disaster. However, since they brought Nellie back to the Bay, they've been a complete gift. Thank you.
4) FSN Bay Area
It's been a long 12 years, but at least we've always had the best TV crew in the bidness! Thanks for giving us the opportunity to write The W Column this season and all those shout outs on FSN. Special thanks to GSoM friend Jen Franklin for always hooking us up.
5) Bay Area Sports Media
Thanks for always showing this community so much love!
- Tim Kawakami
- Marcus Thompson
- Damon Bruce
- Janny Hu
- Bob Fitzgerald
- Matt Steinmetz
- Jon from SFist
- Boku Kodama from Jazzbeat Radio
Also props to GSoM friends Preetom Bhattacharya of Basketball News Services, Dennis Velasco over at About.com, Henry Abbott of TrueHoop, and the crew over at Slam Magazine for always showing us so much support.
6) Hoops Blogosphere
If you want your daily dose of hoops, there's no better place than the hoops blogosphere. Check out Ballhype a product of two GSoMers, Jason and Erin Gurney, to stay up on all the great blogging (see Ballhype: Believe the Hype!) .
7) Donnie Walsh and Larry Bird
Two of the worst contracts in the league, a former lottery pick that was probably a stretch, and a 3rd string point guard for Action Jackson, TMNHarrington, Josh POWell, and Sarunas? Um, what were you thinking? There's a reason why the Indiana Posers absolutely collapsed after the trade and the Warriors ended the curse. Thanks though!

I'm sure Walsh and Bird will be getting a lot of XMas cards this December from Warriors Nation.
8) SB Nation
It was an honor when the biggest, baddest sports blog network of all asked us to come on over from our little blogspot space in February of 2006.

SBN has the Bay covered:
- Athletics Nation (A's)
- McCovey Chronicles (Giants)
- Silver And Black Pride (Raiders)
- Niners Nation (49ers)
- The Band Is Out On The Field (Cal Golden Bears)
9) SBN Basketball
The biggest, baddest collection of hoops blogs around:
- Blog-A-Bull (Bulls)
- Green Bandwagon (Celtics)
- Clips Nation (Clippers)
- Sactown Royalty (Kings)
- Posting And Toasting (Knicks)
- Mavs Moneyball (Mavericks)
- Indy Cornrows (Pacers)
- Pounding the Rock (Spurs)
- Bright Side Of The Sun (Suns)
- Blazer's Edge (Trailblazers)-- Dave's got class.
- Bullets Forever (Wizards)
10) Jason Richardson
Overall it's been a tough year for JRich. He's had to recover from both knee surgery and a broken hand. Statistically this is the worst year of Jason's career since his first in the league. However, anyone who thinks JRich had a horrible year just doesn't know what they're talking about.
Even though he was always out there giving his all when other player's quit last season, JR organized an apology letter to the fans and promised that the Warriors would make the playoffs this season. At the time his apology was extremely honorable, but his promise seemed impossible to live up to. But, Jason Richardson lived up to his promise. A TRUE WARRIOR.
The Mavs don't even want to think about what JRich's going to do in the playoffs!
From everyone in Warriors Nation, JR- much respect.
11) The Dirty Dozen
Know your history: Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3, but the curse is over! "We Believe Playoff" and now "We See Playoff".

We've been starving for some playoff action!
12) The ENTIRE GSoM Community
You come here every day (most of you more times than you'd ever admit to your boss or teacher) and you bring a positive attitude, a great sense of humor, and sharp insights 24-7-365. Major props to everyone for blowing the roof off of the open thread for tonight's game. It just shows what happens when GSoMers come out in the masses.
GSoMer are not some collection of random internet posters who start flame wars and act a fool. We're a community and we ROLL DEEP (ahem, GSoM Night at The Oracle). The atma of Warriors Nation.

REPRESENT!
13) My Boys
Last but not least, I'd like to give a special shout out to my boys DJ Fuzzy Logic, Fantasy Junkie, YaoButtaMing, and Hash for pouring their blood, sweat, tears, and bad jokes into this site for the past 2 years to make it absolutely UNSTOPPABLE BABY!
![]() |
DJ Fuzzy Logic: It was just another afternoon of two PhD students stressing about school, life, the real world, and the below poverty line income. We resorted to our usual therapy, cracking jokes about our favorite hoops love, the Golden State Warriors. But for some reason we just couldn't stop. And then BAM! Golden State Warriors BLOG, the predecessor to Golden State of Mind, was formed. The world was never the same... 1 Dub. 1 Luv.
![]() |
Fantasy Junkie: I remember when Fantasy Junkie and I were in 8th grade in English class and we were so hyped up about the Warriors-Suns Playoff Game 3 that night. We weren't paying the least bit of attention that day in class (I don't think our teacher was that amused), but it looks like we still managed to learn how to write a little. (DISCLAIMER: Kids, DO NOT ignore your 8th grade English teacher!) That was 1994, now it's 2007. It's been 13 years. We've grown up (haha, highly debatable) and we've been waiting. Oh we've been waiting. We're even more hyped now- call it hyphy! 1 Dub. 1 Luv.
![]() |
Hash: When times were dark for the Warriors, Hash came in and brought optimism and humor. GSoM without Hash and his sandwich is like the Warriors minus Thunder. Our 6th man was a great addition like Matt Barnes- Hash Baby! Sit next to this man at a Warriors game and you're in for some serious high-fiving. 1 Dub. 1 Luv.
![]() |
YaoButtaMing: I swear half the time I don't get my man's jokes in his recaps. I must be the only person in the world who doesn't watch Family Guy. This blog wouldn't be the same without YaoButtaMing's crazy insights and undying passion. 1 Dub. 1 Luv. |

My additional thanks go out to
-Murphleavy. Thanks for being the pieces needed to get us some real warriors in return.
-The Oracle of the Arena. Thanks for alot of memories this season, specifically a great atmosphere for a road viewing.
-Chris Murphy. GSOM Night, Dallas tickets and playoff tickets. You're the man.
-Mike Miller, Jason Kapono, Reggie Evans, etc. We really enjoyed the show you put on against our 'Dubs. You're not welcome back.
-Captain Crunch. I have a bowl in front of me right now, the recap food of champions.
-Refs. Thanks for making it difficult. Thank you also for sometimes making it up as you went along, who knew you could foul a guy after a game ended?
GSOM Community and Crew- Great group we've got here, I just hope salary cap considerations won't break us up.

playoffs are in the forecast
Everyone in the organization deserves credit for this and i would like to start at the VP; the sweetest shooting southpaw the world has ever seen, chris our savior mullin. I couldnt see this happening without trading the dunmurphy sisters and getting some bad ass doodes in action jackion and tmnharrington. So big up to chris for without him behind the wheel the drunk driver cohan would of found some way to mess it up.
Bring on the mavs, cause we OWN THEM. Dirk is going to wish he was back in deutchland cause we are going to harrass him to no end. He will have a restraining order against our warriors after this series no doubt.

Vonteego, my man
But let's savor this moment for a few minutes anyway. I did the math, and, best I can figure it, here's how our odds look now...

My calculations could be off, though ... feel free to point out where I may be in error.
As far as superstition, here's my latest one: GSoM did it. I say this because the last and only other time I joined a sports chatroom was at the beginning of 2004, when I became a member of Sons of Sam Horn, the Red Sox site. Baseball fans might remember how that season turned out for my team. And hey, if the Sox can go down 3-0 to their longtime tormentor -- a deficit no team in the history of baseball had ever overcome --and then sweep eight straight games to win their first WS title in 86 years ... well, anything can happen.
In other words: keep the faith. Since that brutal loss to the Wizards (and the refs), we've gone 16-5 on a pretty rough stretch of schedule. Now all we have to do is win another 16 games, while losing no more than 12. How hard can that be? I'm telling you, it can be done...

The '06/07 Mavs
Not saying they're not going to be a total beast to overcome. If all goes to form they should handle us in 5-7 games. But playoff series don't always go according to form, and I think with a little luck on our side -- a rim-out here, a rim-in there -- we stand a fair chance (say 25-30%?) of shocking the world.

We are Warriors. (From 94' on)
Barkley would sweep us and the misery would come
It was Lanier, Adelman, Carlesimo and Jean
They were the team that I had rooted for all as a teen
Of course Webber leaves and Joe Smith is our savior
But could another number one pick be just another trader?
It turns out he was a bust and not even a threat
But who knew that Sprewell would choke PJ's thick neck?
We traded for Antawn Jamison over Vince Carter
But tt turned out that he would be just another starter
Just like Donyell, and certainly like Bimbo
With just another coach that would also be in Limbo
Dave Cowens, Brian Winters, and drunk Eric Musselman
Well at least the latter would get this team somewhat hustlin'
I ain't gon' mention all the players that are gone
Because this poem would simply last too long
But when I became Twenty, Mullin came back
He fired those muscles but hired a Cardinal quack
Of course another coach that just never really made it
Thank goodness we had the sense to trade for Baron Davis
Along with JRich there were some alley oops for the highlights
But with DunMurph being a bust the playoffs were not in eyesight
A longstory told short, we hired that named Don
So another era of Warriors basketball would spawn
We traded some softies for some real hard knockers
Up and down basketball kickin ball's like soccer
So say what you want about the thirteen year drought?
We were here through it all, we will win, we will shout.

warm and fuzzy inside
i remember watching eric augustus "sleepy" floyd's '87 playoff 29 point 4th quarter against the Lake Show in my college apartment with my screaming buddies. (read more on this here: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/040511)
i remember scrounging up all the dough i could get to buy a mini-plan to the '89 season my first year out of college...and then buying a full plan for the following year after my first couple of games watching Tim, Mitch and Chris become TMC.
the next five years as a season ticket holder were glorious. well worth the 1.5 hour drive each way and all of my expendable cash. there was Run TMC...the Road Warriors...beating Jordan, Magic, Bird, Barkley....Run DMC performing at the Arena before the 3rd playoff game against the Lakers in '91...and yes - Spree for Three and trading for the rights to Webber.
then i suffered through the next five years of hell...don't want to go into it. alas, traveling 1.5 hours each way to the arena just wasn't fun anymore. i loved the warriors...but it was like cruel and unusual punishment. i got older..got more responsibilities...and regretfully gave up my season tickets in '99.
i've remained a fan and rooted hard for the warriors to become fun again. every year i've come back with hope...every year i've been disappointed. my wife has known the score just by watching my face.
to cut to the chase...in the spirit of this thread...i'm a very happy man right now. i'm with you all. i feel the same way. for me, the playoffs is big...but there's something more, too. simply put, i like these guys. i like that they like each other and they work hard and pull for each other and play as a team. i love that they are having fun.

Congratulations GS fans
I don't think people outside Oakland truly understand the phenomenally insane Warrior fans and just how deserving they are of this euphoria. The right team got that berth and I'm, for one, amped about the prospect of GS taking a stab at DAL.
Best of luck.

Ex-Warrior Thoughts
Ike Diogu: That's cool they made the playoffs. I probably wouldn't get any playing time though so not too much to celebrate if I were there. I know the Pacers may trade Jermaine O'Neal so my time to shine here is now.
Keith McLeod: The Warriors make the playoffs and I get stuck on this crummy team they call the Pacers.
Troy Murphy: Wow...They made the playoffs without me. Good to finally see J-Rich there. When's my time?
Mike Dunleavy: What the heck? How the hell did they make the playoffs? I wanted out of there because the Warriors don't seem to have any direction for me and the team. I came to the Pacers envisioning this team is way better than the Warriors and will get my playoff time here. Now it looks like I'll end up with the longest playoff drought.

Congrats!
I suffered through the mavs of the 90's - you know, 20 wins and what not, being beat up at school for wearing their stuff, ect . . .
It was such a great feeling when my team finally didn't suck and made the playoffs! I remember falling in love with Don Nelson, as old, fat, and ugly as he was!
That season the Mavs had to face the heavily favored Jazz, went down 0-2 in a five game series, but won three in a row to take the series and send Karl Malone fishing. A Don Nelson special, right there!
Enjoy the great feeling guys! It will be hard to upset the Mavs in a 7 gamer, but if you do, I'll be happy for you (sort of).
Don Nelson is a God, he turned the Mavs around, and bright things are in the future for you guys ;)

Random but meaningful thanks to
- Adonal for being a good sport and a great guy
- Monta for the show!
- The marketing guys who organize the GSW for Education nights. Bring your school-aged kid(s) to the game and the Dubs give your school some money.
- FSN, KNBR, ESPN, TNT and Yahoo!Sports
- GSoM
- and the Warrior Girls for inspiring me to grow out my hair.

thank you Warrior Nation
To our awesome GS Warriors: like the 75' Warriors, you all will shock the NBA world this postseason. I just know it.
To Mark Cuban: BE AFRAID. BE VERY AFRAID!

We never really found out why... some sort of Oakland hate maybe. But that would never happen again. The NBA's gotten so much more big time, for one.

PLAYOFFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OK, we start off with Sprewell and Mullen and then there's also Jamison and Arenas, but what about Ricky Pierce? Jerome Kersey? Vinny del Negro? Mark Price? Dale Davis? Terry Cummings or for that matter Vontigo Cummings?
Surely you remember Adam Keefe? or maybe Carlos Rogers? Todd Fuller? Tim Young? Bill Curley?
OK, how 'bout Mookie? Or Marshall? Or Bouges? What 'bout good old Ronnie Sikley? BJ? Bimbo (no he's not your ex-girlfriend)? Felton? Gugliota? Sean Lamply from Cal?
Just take a look at the rosters from '93 through today. I'm betting most of your memories are repressed like mine were. Relax as all your years of frustration melt away and you can actually read Dunleavey without cursing his name.

Thank you Dubs!!!
But I shall stay silent no more. The curse of C-Webb is over, and I'm happy as hell that it was Donnie Nel that brought glory back to the Bay Area. What a Story!
A couple of points:
- If I was a Clipper Fan, I'd be hating life now. Carrying the burden as the Most Disappointing Team of 2006-7. If I were in their shoes, I would be frustated, much less suspicious, about why AJ benched his Mavs against the Warrios but played a full squad against the Sonics. (sure, why not reverse it?). But I would be more frustrated that the Clips blew that game against Sactown's "B" team. Clipper fans really have no one to blame but themselves on that one. It hurts to say this, because I really fell in love with the Clips last year (I'm currently living in LA), and I can never really hate a team who, like us, has had to endure so mcuh frustration in the past. All I can say is, I wish it were the Lakers on vacation, not the Clips.
- Damn, the breaks really went our way these past months. SO much so, that I was pretty much expecting a 20 point lead in EVERY game. During this stretch run, Mcgrady, the Mavs starters, Brandon Roy, Pao Gasol, Kevin Garnett, Kirilinko, were all either hurt or unavailable during this stretch run. When have we ever gotten this many breaks in succession? Didn't this whole last three weeks of the season seem weird??? Granted, the Warriors not only took advantage of each break we had, we annhilated the competition over the past 5 games. In the end, the Warriors made their own breaks. We had so many of our own injuries to overcome earlier, and because of Coach Nelson and our troops, we have finally reached the promised land.
- Just want to give a shot out to GSOM. What a great community we are becoming. We are the envy of all other blogs out there. I wish I was living in the bay to enjoy things like GSOM night or just to find time to hang out with y'all. L.A. sucks! Do any of your other SoCalers know of a Warrior dominated bar around here?
- Thank you Don Nelson and the Warrios of 2006-2007 for putting 13 years of misery, frustration, and embarassement down the toilet. I've stuck with you guys wearing my Warriors jerseys with pride as with many of us here.

These are the times...
Everywhere in class today, all I heard was Warriors. Before this explosion, no one ever talked about them. It was incredible.

PLAYOFFSS BABY
* leave you with this quote by Stephen Jackson: "Once you make the playoffs, all you need is 16 wins and you're the NBA champ, that's the easiest way to look at the championship."

Playoffs!
I remember at the beginning of the season, the Warriors-Kings game was televised on TNT and during half time, Charles Barkley distinctly said "I don't know why we're talking about this game. Neither one of these teams are making the playoffs."
Sir Charles - you were quite quite wrong. You seem to be able to beat an old man at a race (how did that happen?) but you can't predict the playoffs well. Guess when it comes to being a sports commentator - you are no role model.
My prediction - Warriors in 6. No one can stop the team that no one believes in.

I got a trivia question for you...who can stop number 5?
