CWebb and Spree Had Next

The year was 1994. Sir Charles Barkley, Kevin Johnson (KJ), Thunder Dan Majerle, and the Phoenix Suns were the present, but Chris Webber aka The Prize, Latrell Sprewell aka The American Dream, and the Golden State Warriors were the future. This classic Nike hoops barbershop commercial captured that feeling for Warriors Nation best [via Ballhype]:

Barkley to CWebb: "I don't believe in role models, but uh... you're mine."

Well as you all know things didn't exactly go according to plan. Nellie and CWebb weren't the bestest of buddies and Latrell went Sprewell on PJ. But for 13 long years THAT was the last Warrior team that could plausibly claim they had next.

The Phoenix Suns, San Antonio Spurs, and Dallas Mavericks are undoubtedly the present, but does this current incarnation of the Warriors got next like CWebb and Spree did back in 1994?

I'll never get why nellie had to trade webber. Sprewell was such a good player but didnt have the cast after c web left. It just doesn't make sense. Spree your the man!

Was an egomanic who thought he was more important to the team than its franchise player. The whole debacle was really a two-way street; I'm sure Nellie would admit as much now. But since one of the parties involved was just a cocky 20 y.o. and the other was a (supposedly) mature 50-year-old man, I'm more sympathetic to the kid. Still: as soon as Nellie admitted that he had handled the situation badly, I forgave him. Bygones be bygones...

Who knows, Webber is free agent this offseason, and we could used a versatile bigman who can run the floor and pass a little...

What Nellie said about Webber

I heard Nellie speak in May of '06 (before he was hired as the coach of the Dubs) and at the end of the speech we all started asking questions about his coaching days with the Warriors. He said that C-Webb is/was an absolute CANCER on a team. Webber would do whatever he could to go against the coaching staff and always tried to rally the players against the coaches. "Just look at what he's doing in Philly," Nellie said, "he's already worn out his welcome."

And we all know what happened to Webber's time in Philly. I guess Billy King's buying out of his contract was like the fountain of youth for C-Webb's "ailing" knees that are having him help Detroit on their way to a sweep of the Magic.

Oh that brings back memories.

That was a great feeling back then that only fueled bitterness in the following years. Its good to have that great feeling again.

I'm not giving the Suns, Spurs, or Mavs the present. As I said here:

The current roster has a decent chance of running the table if the Spurs get knocked out on their side of the bracket.

Hey, I know some aren't able to envision this, and that's ok by me, but I'm not going to start shoveling dirt on the dubs until they're dead and right now they're very much alive and a team of the present.

even if the dubs meet the spurs remember

the dubs met the spurs twice two on back to back occasions and lost both times...when they did beat the spurs in the beggining of the year they still had Murphleavy and they didn't have BD playing...the spurs also didn't have Flopoli but I think he is arguably the third best player on that team, not to mention he's been a bench player...I still believe that the dubs have a good chance of beating the spurs...just as much as anybody else...

Future was Brighter then, Reality Though is Better

That '93-94 team was truly entertaining and a force in the making. There was the inside with Webber, then the outside with Sprewell and Mully, and the unique fill-in talents of Billy Owens. Plus there was brawn with Byron Houston, and Gatling adding scoring off the bench.

But we know that went down in flames and this year's team with Baron, SJax, Harrington, JRich and Monta have promise ahead of them. Plus Biedrins could become a better scorer next year.

What's great is that with the finishing kick and the win in GM 1, the team has made all the dreams a reality. They are actually good, not just a nice dream on paper and in our minds.

Nothing better than "The City".

We don't got next ...

We got now. Unlike the '94 nucleus, which seemed like a "possible NBA Champ in three years" (if we could just get a Center!) the '06/07 Edition is really built for the here-and-now. Monta and Biedrins are at the bottom of their development curves, but all the other key guys are right at their 25-29 y.o. peaks -- that perfect mix of experience and physical explosiveness. Not saying it's all dowhill from here, but you really don't have to "project" any of our main guys.

As far as Spree and CWebb: boy, you don't wanna know how much I loved those two young men back in my Berkeley heyday. I named my cat "Chris Webber:" 'nuff said. I'm right about the same age as those two, so that video fills me with all kinds of nostalgia and wistfulness ... you know, opportunities not taken, beautiful women not pursued, NBA championships not won...

Sorry, don't mind me. I'm sure you 20-something dudes (and younger!) totally can't relate. Hopefully my boy Skeptic can understand ... sniffle ...

i remember the season after..........

the got Ronny Seikaly for Billy Owens.......at first I hate the move, but then I realize that that was the missing puzzle to the team......one week later they trade Webber for Gugliotta who didnt fit in the team, then Spree got depress and wrote C-Webbs and Owens numbers on his shoes.......we begin the season 7-0.....then 7-31 after Nellie went down

That team potentially was one of the most talented

Pitty was broken up immediately but Webber didn't want to follow the coach like a player should. Even with injured TimBug and Sarunas, they won 50 games! Awful and trajic but it is in the past.

This current team can become an elite one but has to be kept together and that will be interesting to see over the next two years
