PLAYOFF OPEN THREAD - Game #4: Warriors vs Mavericks - Take Control

Update: A tanker exploded on I-80 last night at the Macarthur Maze blowing out a major section of the freeway. Check out DaAzNJRich's diary and sfgate.com for more.

The elevated roadway that crumbled carried eastbound traffic from the Bay Bridge onto Interstates 580 and 980 and Highway 24. The broken concrete fell like a blanket over the roadway below, which connects southbound I-80 to I-880...major backups are expected, especially tonight when the Golden State Warriors take on the Dallas Mavericks in the fourth game of their playoff series and Oakland's Oracle Arena. The Oakland A's are playing Tampa Bay at 1 p.m. at the coliseum next door.

So if you're going to the game and coming from SF or North of Oakland, take BART or leave really early. Here are some alternate routes

Warriors (W-L): 2-1

Mavericks (W-L): 1-2

Time: 7:00pm PST

TV: FSN Bay Area, TNT

Radio: KNBR 680

Forget about the last 3 games, this is the only one that matters now. The Warriors need to treat this game like they absolutely must win. A win puts the Warriors up 3-1 and firmly in control. A loss gives homecourt advantage back to the Mavs meaning the Dubs would have to win 1 of the 2 games in Dallas and game 6 at home. So, if the Warriors can win game 4, they take control of the series, put the Mavs in desperation mode and have a chance to shock the world.

These playoffs are about adjustments. When something isn't working, you need to make a change. We've seen this 3 times now in the first 3 games.

Game 1
We saw the Warriors come out and play their style of the game while the Mavs mixed up their lineup to counteract what the Warriors were doing. It didn't work out so well for them as the Warriors took game 1 in Dallas.

Game 2
The Mavs played their style of game by using the same starting 5 that they've been using the entire year. Instead of Dirk at center, That Lazy Bum started at center with Dirk playing power forward. The Warriors fell apart in that game and the Mavs' adjustment helped them win the game in a blowout. During halftime, a certain TNT announcer proclaimed that the series was over and the Mavs would sweep the rest of the games.

Game 3
The Mavs went with the same starting lineup as in game 2, but this time the Warriors made an adjustment. With Al Harrington in a funk, Nellie had to get some production from his center spot. In steps Andris Biedrins to start the game at center. Matt Barnes got some burn at center too. Warriors win big in game 3 at home.

Game 4
So what does that mean for game 4? What adjustments will both coaches make? The Mavs' 67 win starting 5 just got beat down badly, so what is Avery going to do? I think he's going to go with that same starting 5 of Harris, Terry, Howard, Dirk, and That Lazy Bum. If that lineup falters, how crazy would it be if he went even bigger. A lineup of Terry/Harris at point, Stack at shooting guard, Dirk at the 3, then Diop at the 4 and That Lazy Bum at center? Sure they'd be slow but they'd gobble up every single rebound. Put it this way, the Mavs can't match the Warriors speed and they need to use their size as an advantage, not disadvantage.

As far as the Warriors go, it'll be interesting to see when Nellie goes back to Al. Biedrins should start this game because he was effective down low in game 3. We need Al to step up and play like he did during the last 20 games of the regular season. He's struggling right now, but Warriors Nation has his back and want him to play well. His body language makes it look like he's got no confidence. If he can knock down some jumpers, I think he'll start to get rolling. One other adjustment the Warriors are making, they're bringing in a real celebrity (not David Hasselhoff) to sit courtside, she needs no introduction:

One last thing, in addition to the usual "Let's go Warriors, let's go", "Deee-fense", and "Overrated" chants, I thought we should come up with some more creative ones, not the whole "You Suck" chant. I'll start it off but feel free to post some more in the comments.
- When Dirk is shooting free throws: "DOOOUGH-BOY, DOOOUGH-BOY"
- When Damp comes in the game: "LA-ZY BUM, LA-ZY BUM"

Vegas odds: Mavericks by 3.5 (as of 9:58 am pst)

Predictions:

  • Warriors go up 3-1 in the series with a 9 point win
  • JRich struggled in Dallas, but came up huge in the return to Oakland. He's on fire right now and he keeps it going with 24 points.
  • Al Harrington's offense has been MIA the first 3 games. Warriors Nation wants to see him do well and needs to help him get going. Every time he makes a bucket expect the crowd to get real loud. It's his turn to bring it.
  • The over/under on Devin Harris flops in the first quarter is 20. I'll take the over. It's sad that he's so quick and could be a nice defender, but he resorts to flopping to try to get calls. Someone tell him that flopping just isn't in the spirit of the game.
  • Dirk stays soft. I still think he does the Pillsbury Doughboy commercials. Jax should poke him in the belly and see if he giggles. Hoo hoo.
  • Baron and Jax always bring it, expect more of the same tonight.
  • Dubs Nation stays loud. At game 3, I couldn't hear the whistles or the PA announcer. In game 4, I don't expect to hear them this time either. Mavs players aren't used to real fans and what we sound like. Everyone going to the game, get loud! Everyone watching on tv, get loud!

Make sure to give us your predictions in the comments before tip off and post any comments you have during the game right here.

GO WARRIORS!!!

Easy Money
Mavs by 3 1/2 in Vegas? Drain the kids' college savings account and put in all on the Warriors!

OK, the game may be a tough one, but I still think that we will win, and it's very likely the contest will resemble Friday's drubbing by the Dubs.

I think that Richardson will continue to shine, and Big Al will start to put it together. Let's hope that Andris the Giant gets plenty of court time.

I CAN'T WAIT!!!

Warriors by 11
Don't look now, but the Warriors have won 6 games in a row at home. Oracle Arena is one of the toughest places to visit in the entire league. I feel bad for the Mavs. Haha, actually no I don't.

Keys to the Game:

  • Keep messing with their heads.
  • Keep driving Dirk nuts with double teams and new looks every time. He looks confused.
  • ABUSE the Mavs' backcourt on both sides of the ball. Be physical with them on both offense and defense. Speed right past them at every opportunity.
  • Force them to rely on The Lazy Bum to catch the ball with his hands of stone and convert. We've unfortunately watched him for years here- he can do neither of these.
  • Start Biedrins and run some pick and rolls early for easy buckets. He's too fast and quick cutting to the whole for Damp and Diop.
  • Don't settle for jumpers.
  • Hit those shots.
  • Move the ball around.
  • Deflect the ball, swat some shots, and get easy fast break opportunities.
  • Push the ball downcourt after every Mavs basket. Matt Barnes is exceptional at inbounding the ball. Take advantage of that.
  • Have a great time out!
  • BELIEVE.
Predictions:
  • The Warriors outhustle the Mavs in a major way.
  • The home crowd goes nuts!
  • JR drops 25+ points and continues his great work on the glass.
  • Boom Dizzle gets 8 trips to the FT line.
  • Dirk puts up one of those empty, meaningless Troy Murphy double-doubles.
  • The Lazy Bum gets embarrassed. Man, I've been waiting all series for someone to just throw it down on him.
  • Al Harrington drops 15+ points and makes his first appearance in the series. The crowd shows him mad luv.
  • MP2 throws it down twice.
Hash, Fantasy Junkie, and I will all be at the game in The People's section in section 201 row 13. Make sure to come by and say whassup. You might not be able to see us easily, but you'll definitely hear us!

i will look for you guys
i will be dead center at the top of the arena in the 3 end seats of 232 on the 232/201 center aisle... these are best people's sections seats in the house! if you want to find me, it is easy because i will be wearing my lucky orange warriors hat and yelling at the top of my lungs. you can get a good picture from up there too, but i do not bring cameras to games myself.

my predictions are that the mavs come out to boos and that the oracle will be rocking. ok that is pretty much a given though.

the only other prediction i have is that if pietrus does not drop at least 12 points tonight on 60% shooting, or better, he will be out of a job this summer.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY! - Collapse of I-80 to I-580 EAST
Hey there GSoMer's, I'm a first time poster, but long time viewer of this great blog....anyways, to the heart of the matter:

***************

There was an early morning collapse of the I-80 to I580 East stretch of the freeway today.

***************

You'll probably hear about it all over the local stations right now.  I haven't heard if this will affect the timing of tonight's game 4.  Nevertheless, plan your trip to Oracle accordingly NOW, 'cuz traffic ain't getting any better as we get to the latter part of the day.

Peace Out....GO DUBS...drive safely y'all!!!

Chants
I know the Dubs are already in Dirk's head, but I think the crowd should chant "M-V-P" whenever he touches the ball.

how about M-I-A

FSN vs TNT?
and how about supporting our boys bob and jim by watchin on FSN?  They've been here for us all season so it would be bad karma to watch on the other bandwagon channel now.

i'm in a bit of a bind...i'm going to the game, but I'm going to tivo the broadcast as well. My heart wants to record the FSN coverage. But, I feel like i need to record the TNT broadcast just to see if Fat Man will eat his words or come up with some other excuses for the Mavs. What's a guy to do?

bring the noise
I'll be watching the game on FSN. No good picture quality compared to TNT, but that's just a small price to pay. Bring the intensity and run run run the Mavs into the ground. Hopefully Al gets his stroke back. I'll be yelling extra loud. Is it 7 yet?

anyone seen this simulation?
I got it from someone in Marcus Thompson's blog.  It is a playoff simulation from NBA2k8.

HELP with my Vonteego chant is welcome...
...we were throwing it down in section 217 nosebleed on Friday.  I have taken to greeting Jason Terry with chants of "Von-teego" every time he's at the line.  Could be read as a shot at our own ownership, but I'm glad we didn't draft that cry-baby bitch at this point, so I want him to know what level I believe he's on.

take control
exactly what has to happen. the dubs must come out with the same energy that they had on friday. if they do that, then the series is all but bottled up for us. i can't wait to be there again. PROTECT THIS HOUSE!!!!!!!

by AJC3317 on Apr 29, 2007 2:03 PM PDT   0 recs

The key...
will be how exactly we'll start the game. If we start hitting shots the first 5-6 minutes and take a lead, this will get the crowd going nuts, our confidence growing even more and more importantly the Mavs getting nervous.

Let's go Warriors!!

by BlauGelb on Apr 29, 2007 2:48 PM PDT   0 recs

This game is important
I really don't know how it is going to turn out.  The playoffs are funny.  Confidence can flip like a switch.  If the Warriors can keep their emotional game focused, they are the better team.  I just worry that if they get their backs against the wall, they'll freak out.  I know Nellie has coached them the best they can be coached.  Let's play ball.

WE BELIEVE!

by walkerp on Apr 29, 2007 2:55 PM PDT   0 recs

Dubs must maintain composure
Almost everything should run through BD tonight, period.  BD needs to take command in this game.  Not in terms of scoring per se, but in terms of controling the game and emotional tempo.  This is arguably the biggest game yet and everyone's bound to be amped, especially if the crowd's crazy again.  What I don't want to see are the Dubs losing their focus ala game 2.  Only BD (and Monta some) should be bringing it up the floor.  Jax needs to stop thinking he can take it the length himself.  He's just wild half the time he's bringing it up, and I expect the flopping to continue, and he doesn't need to be picking up offensive fouls.  Also, Air France should stay in the hangar.  I appreciate his efforts the other night (good rebounds, a block, and his hustle), but he's the least fundamentally sound player when he's on the court (which could exacerbate any emotional flare-ups).  More often than not, he's only good for picking up 4 fouls in 8 minutes.

by NY Warriors Fan on Apr 29, 2007 3:14 PM PDT   0 recs

air france in the hangar
i think i agree. kalenna can put out the same hustle as long as he is not touching the ball. he will make a better percentage of spot up 2's as well. i wish they could have waived zarko and signed renaldo major for the rest of the season back in february. why didn't we cut zarko anyways?

Barkley on TNT
Is anyone else watching the crow-eater on TNT right now?  He said Golden State (which I can only assume to mean Oakland) is a smokey town filled with hillbillies.

Thats right.  Oakland, California, of the San Francisco Bay Area, one of the most progressive, cultured, dense, urban areas in the world, is a "Smokey Town with a bunch of hillbillies."
H-I-L-L Billies. In Oakland.

What a clown.

Kenny the Jet countered that almost immediately, and said "Charles, you from Alabama, how you goin to be callin Golden State that?"  Zing!  I do like their straight-man and stooge combo but I think Barkley got his feelings hurts when we were chanting that he sucks.  Didn't he say that we were already obnoxious when our team wasn't good and now its ten times worse (or something)?

by WhiteElephantGuy on Apr 29, 2007 4:35 PM PDT   0 recs

yes
and when he was talking about the hillbillies, he said something like, a bunch of hillbillies with all  there signs. wonder which signs he was talking about?

Time to shine and be true Warriors!!!
IMO, we've had the talent to win all of our games vs. Dallas thus far.  Our own emotions got us in Game 2, but the awesome Game 3 showed everyone how the Dub's bounce back from adversity.

I expect Dallas to put their ultimate best effort in tonight's first 5-10 mins of the 1st qtr and the first 5-10 of the 3rd.  The key is for the Dubs to not "react" to Dallas...but rather to continue the Game 3 speed and intensity to blow the Mavs out of the water!!!!  WE are the agressors, and everyone knows it!!

C'mon Al and MP...all we're asking is for some type of presence and consistency!  It's time for these guys to step up like Monta did after Game 1.

p.s.  The Fat Man is a total joke.  To have the Warriors win only makes it that much sweeter!

Charles Barkley is one ignorant son of a b. If there is a lack of backlash regarding his comments, it will truly be an example of a double standard. Imagine if Ernie Johnson had said some of those things about, say, the South? He wouldn't havea job come Monday morning. What an assclown.

Al needs to get into the game
his role is CRUCIAL this game. If his shot starts falling, Dallas will have to respect his shot which will open up the lane for ALL Warriors to TAKE IT TO THE RIM! Cmon Al, lets get your shooting on point!
RUN TMC!

Mavs Look Like
They finally are taking this seriously. We need to make our open looks tonight because Dallas is gonna play their best game. Anything less than A effor and we will lose.

Dallas is playing like its do or die,....BUT...
there's still a long way to go.  The Dubs and the Oracle fans (who should've refillled the place with all golden yellows) gotta play like it's do or die as well.  Distribute wisely, keep taking it inside strong, and work together!

The Pace
is really troubling right now. We need to work on the spacing and movement. Lets hope the crowd get louder.
