PLAYOFF OPEN THREAD: Game #4- Warriors vs Jazz - 10 in a Row?

I know ya'll ready for this!
Photo: Warriors.com
Jazz Lead 2-1
Time: 6pm
TV: TNT
Radio: KNBR 680
The Dubs are coming off another dominating performance at home. For those of you counting they've won 9 straight games at the Oracle by an average margin of over 15 points per game (see schmoe13's diary). Even if the Jazz had Karl Malone and John Stockton in their primes, I just don't the see the Warriors losing tonight at home.
There's no doubt in my mind that the entire arena is going to be straight hyped tonight, but to help get you throwing up that W early on your Sunday morning, check out this Miss Gossip production featuring a track from Rob Bess, Dee Dee Johnson, Jimmy Ray, Jamal Mall-N-Drawls Robinson, Mike Spiderman Robinson, and Star Celebration Band (correct me if that isn't the right creator list):
A Song to Get Warriors Fans Hyped [FanHouse]
Keys to the game:
- Shoot the lights out. The Warriors were really knocking down their jumpers and layups on Friday night. I'm not sure they'll be able to attain that same fire alarm inducing shooting, but if they can approach those percentages tonight we're golden.
- Get Deron Williams and Derek Fisher in foul trouble early. They're both very strong physical players on another dirty and physical Jerry Sloan team. It shouldn't be that hard to draw some early fouls on them. When they're on the bench, BD's life is much, much easier. Andrei Kirilenko's isn't however. Life is good for Sportscenter too.
- Don't get beat on the boards by too much. Let's face it, the Warriors will probably never outrebound the Jazz this entire series. The Jazz were built to rebound and bang with guys like Booze and Mehmet Ogre, while the Warriors were built to run, run, and run. Still, the fellas can minimize the damage on the glass by keeping the ball alive with tips in the air and using their quicker leaping abilities to pull down the board. By the time the 4th quarter rolls around fatigue will really set in for the Jazz if they have to jump several times for every rebound.
- Confuse the Jazz with different look on D. At times on Friday night the Jazz looked completely lost on offense and simply handed the ball over to the Warriors. Those turnovers led to easier buckets in transition and a frustrated Jazz team. The Warriors need to bring out their A game on D tonight.
- Push the ball down court... fast! After every made Jazz bucket the Warriors should be looking to score within a few seconds if the Jazz are not getting back on D. Matt Barnes throws an excellent inbounds pass all the way down court. Use his quarterbacking and the uncanny Warrior speed to get easy buckets that the Jazz simply cannot stop.
- Take it to the hole with authority and good things will happen. In Games 1 and 2 AK-47 was swatting Warrior layups on the regular, but by Game 3 the Warriors figured him out. Kirilenko is looking to swat every shot, not simply change shots which good defenders prioritize over the highlight block. Pump fake him and that sick shot blocker is reduced to a foul or a posterization.
- Win the points in the paint. Although the Jazz are bigger, the Warriors can win the points in the paint with nice, sharp interior passing and attacking the rim with no conscience.
- Baron Davis cannot get another technical.
- Don't forget that the last time the Warriors lost in Oakland was April 7th.
- Don't forget this is OUR house.
- Don't forget it's 20,600+ on 5.
Predictions:
- Warriors by 7
- The BoomRich backcourt combines to drop over 50 points.
- A rejuvenated and confident Monta Ellis drops 15 points.
- Matt Barnes grabs over 8 boards.
- Jax drops 5 dimes.
- Al Harrington nets 3 trifectas.
- Andris Biedrins hits over 80% of his free throws.
- No Warrior gets a technical foul tonight.
- Carlos Boozer goes for a quiet, empty, Troy Murphy-like 20 and 10.
- Deron Williams or Fish foul out.
- Kirilenko gets posterized again.
- Our house is LOUD.
Jazz coach Jerry Sloan claims that he wasn't fazed by the We Believers on Friday night (see dchoi003's diary), so um, let's let him and the Jazz have it. I guarantee you that their ears will be ringing in Salt Lake City all night long.
Make sure to give us your predictions in the comments before tip off and post any comments you have during the game right here.
UPDATE: Warriors lose a tough one 101-115.
Stay tuned for the recap...

1st vs. 2nd quarters
The teams reversed in the 2nd. Utah picked up a ton of fouls and has 3 players with 3. They shot much better, and didn't go to the line but a couple of times. The W's went to the line a lot, but didn't shoot that well. They've missed a bunch of shots in a row and didn't score from the field for awhile there at the end of the quarter and Utah took the lead.
So the game is basically even, but the crowd doesn't seem that into the game at this point and Utah has controled the pace of the game for much of the first half.

We need more depth for next year. Our rotation is getting worn out. We could use some minutes from Powell or Foyle and get some toughness down low in the paint.

Yeah, We were passing up open layups to kick out for 3's ! How wack is that! It looked like our guys had never played together before and dint have any plays? Dubs can still pull out the next game...they just gotta take it one at a time. I'd say we'll see how Nellie deals with the do-or-die situation.
by warriorsfan4life on May 13, 2007 9:24 PM PDT reply actions
I am not being a hater here
to play at the level they have, being smaller has taken so much out of them
Being down as they are it will be that difference that allows Utah to pound the ball in
You're probably right
My odds:
40% of winning Game 5
80% of winning Game 6
60% of winning Game 7 (we'd have all the Mo')
.4 x .8 x .6 = an 19.2% shot. We can do this!!!

I know there might be criticism if Nellie...
We all know that Utah's size in the paint is to their advantage while our speed and shooting and "unorthodox" style of play has been to our advantage. With a do-or-die game, then pretty much all should be laid on the line...from here and all the way to the Game 7 clincher that I'm pulling for.
by warriorsfan4life on May 13, 2007 9:47 PM PDT reply actions

and just keep them running and shooting 3s. We live by the 3, and we will go down fighting with the 3!!!! Just let Boozer get his boards and points in the point. Make him beat the Warriors entirely by himself.

If only Utah had a 1 man team tho....
If Boozer or anyone else lights up inside, I'd much rather make them earn it on the line instead of just letting them muscle everything in. Of course, we'd need to be smart about who gives the fouls.
Tough loss tonight...shot ourselves in the foot on the free throw line and probably tired shots from the 3 pt line late in the 4th. The Dubs are the best when taking it inside with the option to score in the paint or kicking it back outside for a shot after the defense has collapsed. Heck, with the kickout, our players can go another round or 2 of driving it back in again. But taking it up court and then stopping at the 3 pt line is playing mighty dangerously...I know we've been riding it for awhile..but I just hope we play loose and with nothing to lose come Tuesday. GO DUBS!

Utah didn't "Win" this game
Think of it this way: if we won this game, it would be 2-2. Then if Utah won game 5, they'd be up 3-2 heading back to The Oracle and we'd have all the confidence in the world. So what's to say that we can't win game 5 and still come back to defend home court with a real shot at this thing?
All I'm saying is that I look down at this yellow shirt I'm wearing and it says "WE BELIEVE" on it. And I won't stop believing until that final buzzer sounds.
by CNote on May 13, 2007 10:09 PM PDT reply actions
Definitely
i'm sure someone said this already, but it seemed like the Warriors were playing somewhat selfishly. Davis seem to revert to pounding the ball and chucking wild off balanced shots (some going in, thank god). Jax played similarly, which to set off a bunch of also bad looking shots too. I noticed that the one-on-one game often leads to Barnes or Richardson on the wings shaking their hands calling for the ball. Then when they do eventually get it, they just chuck it up as fast as they can (damn those fadeaway jumpshots from the corners). How many times do we need to see the Jax, Davis, Harrington do the same thing? I'm glad Harrington is finding his rhythm, but putting up a long two fading to his left against Ak-47 or Okur does not seem like a high percentage shot. This is definitely NOT the type of play that got them this far and is definitely not the type of game they played in their two close losses to the Jazz or in their losses to the Mavs. Perhaps the Jazz figured out that dribble penetration leads to our great shooting -- so maybe that's why they clogged hte lane so well today, but the Dubs need to do a better job getting better looks and distributing the ball.
Also, how many freethrows did we brick today? when it rains it pours....

Dubs gotta play with the "underdog"
- Mother's Day affecting the crowd & players.
- Sunday game (The Sunday night game vs. Mavs @ Oracle didn't compare to that Friday game either.)
- Dubs perhaps overconfident from Game 3.
- JRich icing down after catching fire in Game 3.
- Sloan playing to his strengths in clogging the paint.
- Williams and Fish not getting into foul trouble.
- Dubs not getting enough help overall. Harrington's be a player again. Ellis is at least better than before. Barnes/BD/Jrich cooled down. AB still solid. Jax still doing his thing, tho he could prob take it inside more too.
- Would've been great if the Oracle crowd could've stepped it up...
- Dubs gotta "stay hungry". Now down 3-1, this may finally reset them and get them back on track. We've come a long way since snatching the 8th spot. We've just gotta give our best effort and go out battling on the court!

fatigue tonight, shots not going in. that's kind of the story. everything else remains equal. shoot well and win. shoot poorly and lose.

Expectations
I know all of you would agree with me, that if you knew at the beginning of the season that we'd get this far and see how Baron Davis has an MVP type playoffs, you'd all be saying it'd be a great year.
I don't want this team to be a perennial 1/2nd round playoff team. I want to see this team win a Championship. We still need to add to this roster.
We need help down on the 4 spot. We need a rebounder/bruiser. We don't play well in a half court setting, both offense and defense. To take this team to the next level, we need a low post presence who can score, rebound, and have some kind of shot blocking ability.
Maybe we'll find that guy in the draft, but we seriously can't draft anymore guards/small forwards. We need some strength down low.
