Bill Simmons calls it: Bandwagon A-holes polluted Oracle in Game 4

* Heard conflicting reports on the Oakland crowd last night, but just from watching Game 4 on TV, the crowd paled in comparison to the crowds from the Dallas series, which made me wonder if the "renaissance" of Warriors basketball had inevitably caused the stands to be filled by bandwagon fans and rich a-holes who always end up ruining these sorts of things because they don't care who wins or know how to affect the games ... they just want to be there because it's the place to be. I hate when this happens. Anyway, Will from Oakland sent me an interesting e-mail:

"I have been a Warriors fan since age 3 and attended every home playoff game this year at different locations -- Warrior fans in the first round were worthy of the praise bestowed upon them by the media (you included). Last night, I was disgusted to be at the Oracle. The Dallas series was packed with REAL fans, a raucous arena full of people who had really been waiting 15 years. Once we upset the Mavericks though, we became obscenely trendy. Now, rich suburban families who couldn't name half our roster decided it would be fun to take the family to a game, and prices went up to $250 a seat for the lower bowl. Goodbye real fans, hello normal NBA crowd. The arena was subpar in the Game 3 win, but was absolutely SILENT in Game 4. I got in fights with fans around me after screaming at them to make noise. It's a sad day for Bay Area basketball. The fans get credit for the wins, we deserve the blame for this loss."

I did not want this to happen, but all the game 4 crowd SUCKED.  I have heard it louder in a Nov game against Sactown, much less last night.  The Yuppies have taken over.

The only solution: Don't sell your tickets to some jabronie who has never gone to a GSW game before.

Case in point:  I had a friend who bought three tickets to all the home playoff games the night the Warriors clinched in Portland.  He got bumrushed by folks to go to the game with him.  Game 3 he takes his co-worker.  Dude had never been to a basketball game before.  That should have been the first warning sign.  Then what happens?  DUDE BARELY MAKES A SOUND THE ENTIRE GAME.  My buddie swore that he would never do that again, but the damage had been done.  Even though the warriors won game, imagine all the d*ckriders that Simmons was talking about sprinkled all over the Arena.  WTF.  Take your money and get Shark tickets, Stay the hell away from Oakland.   [editor's note, by CallMeKang]http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/blog/index?name=simmons

i couldnt agree more
this pissed me off so much, and after atttending two games, lower bowl, in series 1, i have to say that the crowd honestly is a big part for our success, and that last nights loss was because of those f*cking bandwagon, fake @$$ fans that sit down the entire game and occasionally clap a little. Someone from the warriors organization needs to do something about this.
Tickets should only be sold to the most intense fans.

Your right dood, but
it's a darn shame man.  Well, I'll be watching when we shock the Jazz on Tuesday and take this series, I'll cheer for our guys and rock my GSW squad on 2K7, follow everything that happens over the summer, check this blog everyday, curse the names of Smith, Fuller, Cummings, Murphy and Dunleavy every chance I get.

And I'll never forget that real GSW fans are "UNSTOPPABLE, BABY!" (and smile inside each time I say or read that line)

this is how everything is these days
Lots of money out there

Back on the day when the Warriors were in the playoffs in 1974 you could buy tickets to the games that day (this according to my Dad and Grandfather)

Look at how expensive houses are these day in the Bay with all the transplants.

More money chasing the good things

There's nothing we can do about this aside from getting our True Dub broke as*es to the game even more.  Grassroots effort on GSoM dot com???

ticket sales
ticket sales for round 1 had thousands of real fans lining up to buy 4 or more tickets to round 1 games 3 and 4. tickets for game 6 all went to brokers and were not available to these type of fans. it actually showed up at game 6 of that round when you saw more people who looked like they did not know what they were watching with such a fast pace. i noticed it, but thought maybe it was just the section i was in. still, i mostly figured a lot of people were like me; they wanted to get game 6 tickets and witness playoff history no matter what. i knew having to pay as much as i did for round 1 game 6 would tap my wallet unless they could make it past the next round and until my next payday!!

i got in to the game last night because my friend wanted to go and he paid for my ticket since i was the person who scored face value tickets for him to see all the games he has seen with me since march... before friday night, we went to a total of 11 home games since this whole playoff run started, and we missed the san antonio game so we had an amazing undefeated streak going(until last night).

if there is a game 6 of this round, i cannot see myself being there unless i receive another gift; or at least a ticket @ face value and a quick trip to the record store to sell a crate of classics. given their performance last night, i am loathe to make that choice(my wax or my dubs), but i would be happy to be faced with that choice too.

anybody have a face value ticket to offer me?

sad sad sight
"DOWN IN FRONT!" and "WHY ARE YOU STANDING ITS ONLY A FREE THROW!" were the most common cheers coming from section 219.  Here's what I wrote to Bill Simmons after reading his latest blog ...

I'm here to back up the email you got from the upset Warriors fan over the crowd at Game 4.  Maybe it was Sunday, maybe it was Mother's Day, but the crowd yesterday paled in comparison to the Dallas series.

Game 3's crowd was ok, but since everything was going the Warriors way, it was hard to tell.  On Sunday I was actually yelled at to sit down.  I've got "Down in FRONT!" numerous times and "Why are you standing, it's only a free throw!"  You sang our praises as Warrior fans, and while I appreciate your compliment, it was a bit of a stretch.

I don't feel sorry for those fair weather fans.  I feel sorry for the hardcore fans that came out on Sunday for the first time (I was sitting next to a few) and got THAT crowd.

i heard that too
i was in 219 and a guy right behind me yelled at some dude to sit down. it was pitiful

shock
I was so in shock by what he said, the only thing I could say was "Are you serious?  Are you serious?"  My heart broke on the spot.

Good perspective
Was at the game last night.  I was very disapointed    with the crowd!  The energy just wasn't there like the other series.  I couldn't quite put a finger on it but This makes prefect sense.

idea.....
....but this will never be followed.

All playoff tickets should be sold as "free-for-alls" where only the fittest survive, meaning whomever has the most dedication will run their asses of to the ticket lines when the gate opens. that will ensure a raucous crowd.

damn bandwagoners. it pisses me off. cuz i would have been yelling my ass off if i was there.

Where the !@#$ are you now, Billy Owens????

I'm copying and pasting what I said in another
diary:
as the Warriors get more successful, the crowds are going to get less crazy. Rich aristocrats and the upper middle class are going to start to be more interested in the Warriors, and they will buy out the lower level seats from the more die-hard fans. If the Warriors keep winning, pretty soon we're only gonna see corporate exec.s, brokers, lawyers, doctors, etc. in the lower level spending half of the game looking at their blackberrys.

It really is a sad thing to see, especially since we prided ourselves on being passionate, involved fans.

"Fans" in my Section...
yelled at me to sit down too!! To make things worse it's not like I even had many people behind me. I was in section 203 row 17...and it goes up to 19! Those people tried to ruin it for me. At least there was a guy who stood up for me there.

Just Don't Let Us...
turn into Dallas' fans next year!!!!!!!

by Ceradecke on May 14, 2007 8:16 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Hmm...
What was wrong with the Dallas fans?! Being one myself, actually, I just like basketball and I live in Dallas! What makes you think that we didn't have the same fake bandwagon fans at the AAC? Think about it...how big was this series before it started:
  1. GS & Dallas...GS 3, Dallas 0...
  2. Dallas 67-15 (the best in the NBA), GS 42-40
  3. Nellie vs. Mark Cuban
  4. Nellie vs. Dirk & Avery
  5. Dallas and that collapse from last year...
I am MORE than sure...we had some people there wanting to simply see a championship run! In fact, now that it's over, they've turned on the Mavs! So sad! Now you know how we real fans feel...we have bandwagon fans too...they suck...no matter where they are!!!

Anyway, just my little opinion...good luck in the playoffs...you should be proud to be a real fan!!

wagoners
dude the wagon ppl suck but you got to deal with it. if your the real fan make up for the stupid bandwagoners and leave the sharks out of it. and you call yourself from the bay.

by v3rg3ll on May 14, 2007 8:57 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

sorry dawg if your a shark fan.
I don't even count those suckas as even part of Bay Area sports.  But I ain't hating.  Go Sharks (even if I don't even know anyone on the team and if I walked by one on the street, I wouldn't even know it)

Likewise...
I was also in 219. Lotsa jostling about the standing up and down. Interesting to learn others were in 219, sounds like I've run into some of you without even knowing it.

Still frustrated
with bandwagoners/fairweather fans...I was still in my seat 15 minutes after the game ended, just in pure disbelief of the crowd last night.  We have now lost the title as "Best Crowd in the NBA", but thats not the real problem.  "Fans" buy over-priced tickets to support their team, but don't cheer/chant or tell other fans to sit down?!!?
WTF is that?!! Good thing no one told me to sit down. [/end rant]

well what do you expect
you should of figured it out already when they did that thing on espn with the decible thing and it was at the same range as utah! like the baron dunk would of been so much louder if the real crowd was there. dam i hope our game 6 fans if they go! and if we make it and i know we will! they will be bandwagon cheeres at least and chear like they are real warrior fans. because game 4 was just depressing

And now you know ..
why STAPLES Center always seems so quiet.

by pree on May 15, 2007 2:10 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

All my fault
I sit in the lower bowl and the entire game I yell my ass off.  Yet since it was Mother's Day I was unable to show up.  So the warriors are undefeated when I am there in the playoffs.  I knew I messed up in not attending, but if we win game 5, I guarantee the place will be rocking for 6.  Sorry that was my fault.

by Dubs4Life on May 15, 2007 7:39 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

so angry that...
the funny thing is that i was at home watching the game on tv while my cousin was at the game and after hearing the crowd i got all angry that i wasn't there to help fire up the crowd... so angry that i texed my cousin something along the lines of... "are you at the game? the crowd is so quiet on tv... effin get them fired up!  this is pathetic."

seriously though... we get hyped as the loudest arena in basketball... they bust out with the decibel meter for Game 3 multiple times (and even that game was kinda quite by comparison to the mavs series) and they don't even break it out once on Sunday... pathetic.

we gave mavs fans isht for leaving games early in their arena when they were winning... we gave them isht for leaving games early in their arena when they were losing... and now look at some of the fans... leaving with 2 minutes left?  are u serious?  Does Reggie Miller scoring 8 pts, in the final 16 seconds to beat the Knicks back in the late 90's prove anything is possible... shows how much those fans believe.

... it is what it is.

that was
so pathetic.  i sit right by a standing room section, and one fucker was cussing out beidrins for not making both free throws.

that was me
I've been a reader of this website for just over a year, but never posted before.  I was the "Will from Oakland" that Simmons quoted, and just felt like saying whats up, now that there is a diary on the subject of my email.  Everyone better bring it for Game 6.

by Willball31 on May 15, 2007 5:17 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

weak crowd
being mother's day, there were a ton of old ladies in the arena. a woman who sat in front of me spent the whole game sitting down, and didn't even put on her yellow shirt.  for all i know she was taking a nap. with utah playing well, the yuppies, the mothers, it was a perfect storm for a weak crowd.

and there is nothing you can do to stop bandwagon fans, save try to convert them into better, or at least noisier and knowledgeable, fans. the best way to do that?  don't know.  contentious rants might put the pressure on the yuppies to perform, or perhaps letting them know that noise, and more importantly timely noise, is the gas that helps the wagon run.

by kristakahashi on May 15, 2007 6:26 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I am still upset
i was so heated at the Sunday game.  after being to two games in the mavs series and yelling and standing the whole game, losing my voice essentially in the first half . . . fans were yelling at me and my boy to 'sit down' instead of yelling for their team to win.  if you can't see or don't want to come to a PLAYOFF game to go nuts for your team, keep your ass on your couch the way you did the whole season.  say what you will about players not showing up in some games this series.  oracle didn't show up  on sunday.  i'd like to say i did everything i could to turn that around.  it was sickening to see some of the fans that were there that night.sickening
