Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Utah will be BOOMING

The big question heading into today was what type of action the league would take against Baron Davis for his foolish elbow to long time flopper extraordinaire Derek Fisher in Game 4. According to Chris Sheridan [ESPN], Baron Davis will not be suspended for tonight's game. Instead the NBA's Executive VP of Basketball Operations Stu Jackson has assessed Davis with a flagrant foul, category 2.

Do you think this was the right move or should Baron be suspended for Game 5?

UPDATE: Here's some more details on the league's decision from Janny Hu [SFGate]:

That means if either Davis or Jason Richardson (who was also hit with a flagrant-2 for flooring Mehmet Okur in the final minute of Game 4) picks up another flagrant foul during the postseason, they'll be automatically suspended for the next game under league rules.

And yes, that does carry over into next season. So, for example, if Davis picks up a flagrant tonight and the Warriors are eliminated, he's out for the regular-season opener.

Here's Baron's response:
"I thought it was fair. My intent wasn't to hurt anybody out there, especially my good friend Derek Fisher. It's the playoffs, there's a lot of contact out there. ... The league's been watching us ever since the Dallas series. I don't know why all eyes are on us. There's a other things going on in other series that are just as physical."

That's the right call...
Suspending someone for a play like that after the game in San Antonio last night would be a mistake. lol  Give Davis is "smack on the wrist" and let these two teams really PLAY!  No excuses.

I think we all saw how Fisher barely got touched there. Even calling it a flagrant 2 is pushing it. And I honestly believe that.

Superstar floppage. Raja Bell Jr. Status.

I think he flopped
and the whole drama where he was on the floor was Hollywood but barely touched?  Come on now you are a blind homer

If Harpring did the same to Baron you would be wetting yourself screaming

werd?
If you don't agree with me, watch the replay. Don't insult me or call me a blind homer. You don't know anything about me.

That's not a sufficient argument, or retort to what I said.

ok retort
I disagree Fisher was more than barely touched as Fisher was in full motion and blind to the screen and Baron gave him a shoulder to the side of the head

Baron set that screen with the intent to flatten him

Well there you go. I can agree to disagree with you on that one.

Yep
it was definately floppage.  I was half expecting Fisher to roll around and wait for a stretcher to carry him out.  Flagrant 2 for that does seem a bit excessive though.

Honestly
I was already watching The Sopranos by the time this had happened in the game.  But as soon as I read "foul" and "derek fisher" i knew we had nothing to worry about.  Looks like the NBA knows a flopper when they see one.

A Question
A class 2 flagrant?  What's the effect?  It wasn't called in the game, so no penalty there; he gets to play tonight, so what's the effect?

My concern is that this may mean an automatic technical and/or a fine.  If a technical, he has no more passes (assuming the W;s might need one after tonight).

Anyone out there know the rule on this?

Excellent point
I'll see what I can dig up.

Hopefully some GSoMer beats me to it.

I asked a similar question in the other diary
and was directed by lowchi to this article
he penalties for accumulated flagrant fouls in the playoffs:

A player will receive one point for Flagrant 1 fouls and two points for Flagrant 2 fouls. If the player's point total exceeds 3 points, he will receive an automatic suspension following the game in which his point total exceeds 3 points and for each additional flagrant foul committed during the playoffs, as follows:

    * Player at 2 points commits a Flagrant 2 foul: automatic one-game suspension

    * Player at 3 or 4 points commits a Flagrant 1 foul: automatic one-game suspension

    * Player at 3 or 4 points commits a Flagrant 2 foul: automatic two-game suspension

    * Player at 5 points or more commits a Flagrant foul (1 or 2): automatic two-game suspension

San Antonio's Robert Horry now has two points and Bruce Bowen had one entering Wednesday's game. Golden State's Jason Richardson has two.

You can add Baron to the list with two points.  I'm pretty sure he hasn't picked up any other flagrant fouls in the post season.

One more tech = one game
I read on ESPN yesterday that it counts as a tech for Baron and if he gets one more tech, he'll be suspended for a game.

So keep cool, Baron, or your Grandma will whoop you.

Where have you gone Jud Buechler?

Different rule
Looks like we've got apples and oranges here.  Janny Hu (see her blog today) says that since this and JRich's were classified as Class-2 flagrants, a second flagrant (of any class, I believe) for either in the playoffs will lead to a one-game suspension.  So, apparently there's no technical.

The upshot: BD still has one free tech before a suspension, but no more flagrants; JRich has techs to give, but no more flagrants.

Let's hope this means something after tonight.

Enough about game 4 already....onto tonight!!!
Many columnists are talking about the Dubs not having enough in the tank anymore.  Well, if there was ever a time to step up BIG time and snatch the spotlight in front of the nation, then I'm pulling for Monta to mature in front of our eyes and play smart and play well in that extra gear of his.  Utah will obviously center their D on Baron.  JRich needs to play smart and know when to post up vs. when to drive vs. when to pull up for the J.  Here's to hoping that they start off the game going into or at least closer to the paint and away from the 3 pt line.

Heads are still up...
I know the W's haven't let Sunday night's loss put them down for the count, and I know us GSOM'ers feel the same way. We have more than enough gusto to snatch a win in Utard and come back to the Oracle and redeem themselves. Then, what do you know, we have a Game 7. OK, I won't get too ahead of myself here. We NEED this game tonight. DO or die for the Dubs. Put allt he suspension/flagrant foul crap aside, Let's Do Dis.
