PLAYOFF RECAP: Game 5: Warriors 112, Mavs 118 - We Got to Pray...

This has got to be the best series in the playoffs, hands down.  Aside from the blowout at the Oracle, each game has been an intense nailbiter with the official decision coming down to the last few minutes of the game.  With more drama than Grey's Anatomy, this matchup has given us fans much to cheer and get emotional about.  Despite a close loss, that could have been a blowout or a win -- depending on how you look at the swings in the game -- the playoffs thus far is still jouissance!

In what was probably the most balanced officiating of the playoff series thus far (aside from the Jax ejection tonight), the Warriors were unable to close out the game.  Up nine with three minutes left, the Warriors all of sudden looked frazzled and jittery after Dirk's block on Barnes.  Back to back threes and Devin Harris' 3 point play officially sealed the Warriors' fate for this game -- despite the millions of mini-comebacks throughout the game.  I actually thought the game was over midway through the second quarter when the Warriors were colliding into each other, miscommunicating, and bricking contested and wide open layups.  At one moment I thought I was watching Game 1 or some highlight reels of me playing ball in high school.  Actually, scenes from the film "Basketball Diaries" where the preppie kids get high before the game and basically have turnover after turnover after turnover adequately describe how poorly the Warriors played during that first half of the second quarter. It was ugly. Kirsten Dunst ugly.

But we got to be proud of the Warriors tonight.  On several occasion with "the bodyguard" on the bench, the Warriors' second unit -- led by Pietrus and Barnes -- kept the game close, bringing it within Dunleavy (meaning 'single digits').  For about 75% of the game (especially the last 10%), the Mavs were looking like their usual dominant selves.  J-Ho was nearly perfect from the field and Nowitski looked determined to get his points inside or outside the paint.  But the Warriors battled back from 21 down to get it within 7 at the end of the second quarter with Barnes leading the charge by penetrating and kicking it out if not stuffing it in the grill of Diop.  Get this man a contract!  The first half revival was punctuated by a technical on Stackhouse.

The second half was rather similar to the end of the first half with the Warriors playing some great defense only for it to go to waste with some sloppy passing or poor shot selection.  I won't repeat what was expressed quite clearly by GSoM readers, but I'll summarize briefly what many said: the poor ball protection and QUICK contested shots killed our own momentum sometimes more than anything Dallas did.  But I guess that's just the nature of the Warriors' game and maybe we just have to live with that.

The Warriors came out gunning though in the second half hitting three after three after three en route to hitting 46% on threes and 47% on the total field goal percentage.  Unfortunately, it doesn't quite help when your opponents shoot above 50% and 48% on threes.  But that seems to be the odd nature of Warriors' ball where the stats don't quite explain their play. JRich, Davis, Pietrus, Barnes, Jax all made triples that killed any Mavs' mini-runs, which culminated in a 9 point lead with just over 3 minutes to play in the 4th.  Unfortunately, things began to snowball directly after the big shots by Nowitski and Harris (15-0 run in final 2 minutes).  Also, the Mavs ability to double the bodyguard froze up everyone, leading to some pretty rushed shots.  Davis fouling out and then the unexpected and highly suspect Jax ejection seemed to be the final unraveling of the Warriors.

Oddly, Jax's deliberate non-violent protest of Davis' last foul led to an automatic ejection in a game that was practically decided.  Jason Terry, who's history of violence in the playoffs, however, was remembered today when he very intentionally took down Baron Davis in front the Warriors bench AND a ref.  Granted, Jax should have known that the gesture of clapping is what refs hate the most (why not throw out the fans too while you're at it?), but to only give a technical for physically throwing someone on the floor seems extremely unbalanced in an otherwise pretty well reffed game.  Really though, what gives?  If anything, it seems that Jax has become the scapegoat for refs and their in-game frustrations.  Even Barkley disagreed with that assessment!

As we all know, the Mavs are a legitimate team (with some WHINY fans) and the Warriors better not let themselves get into the hole they were this last game.  With the exception of the lapses in judgment, the Warriors played their usual frenetic pace-- flying up and down the court playing exciting Nellieball.  But before we get to the next game, here's a few last minute observations:

Starting 5:
They played solidly and cohesively in the second half, easily finding the open man for the wide open three.  As much as the three kept them close, I would have liked to see some more posting up by JRich or even Harrington.  Down the stretch, the Warriors reliance on quick threes led to easy shots on the opposite end.

Bench:
Pietrus has another solid game with 11 pts and 10 rebounds coming up with some much needed defensive rebounds amidst the Mavs' stronger and taller players.  Barnes had a phenomenal night with several highlight worth dunks on just about everyone in the Mavs' starting five.  He exceeded my expectations finishing with 16-5-4, but was really the catalyst for several of the runs the Warriors made early and late in the game.  But Harrington, where did you go?  After playing a relatively decent game-- a few big buckets and dunks-- why was Harrington glued to the bench?

Barnes Baby!  The dude jumpstarted the Warriors comeback in the second quarter and did just about everything that the coach and the team needed.  Rebounds, steals, three pointers, and momentum changing slam dunks-- you name it, he can do it!  Lets hope his ankle injury is nothing serious!

this reminded me a lot of
game 2. a lot of people said "oh golden state had a great opportunity to put dallas away, now dallas has confidence and will show that they're the better team." then the warriors won games 3 and 4. now the mavs win game 5 and people are saying the same things. i'm not worried about our chances in game 6.

couldn't agree more
It's like, did game 2 and 5 erase your memory as to what happened in 1/3/4?  Even if you do take 2/5 and study them individually, you come away w/a dallas team that is lucky to be alive.  People who are closely following this series have to come to two conclusions:
  1.  Our regular season dominance over them was not a fluke.
  2.  The Oracle will put the team on its shoulders and carry them thru any Maverick runs.
The series ends tomorrow.

Quickies
Even though the outcome was extremely depressing, I have to say that was a hell of a game.

Major props to the Mavs. They came back from a 9 point deficit with just a few minutes left and went on a big run. They demonstrated some playoff savvy there.

  • The Mavs' double team on Baron was really effective. It got the Warriors out of their half court sets and caused some chaos.
  • Plain and simple- the Warriors choked.
  • I actually thought the refs were poor all night. At the end Baron's 6th foul seemed like a phantom call and JR was fouled when he missed that 3. Let's hope things even out on Thursday in Oakland.
  • Jason Terry should have been ejected for pile driving Baron Davis in front of the Warriors' bench. That was a dumb move from a guy who has a history of doing stupid things in the playoffs (ask Michael Finley). I can't believe the refs let him off so easy. That's the type of idiocy that sparks brawls. In front of the Warriors' bench? You gotta be kidding me. The league should jet Terry to a 1 game suspension for that sucka move.
  • Those last 2 techs on Stephen Jackson were ridiculous. The first one was just silly and unnecessary, but the second one was outrageous. Hopefully that was the last playoff game that ref will be reffing this playoffs.
  • I was getting a kick out of Dick Stockton and Reggie Miller on TNT clowning the Mavs fans for being so soft in that arena. Haha, pumping that fake crowd noise into their arena just cracks me.
Thursday- you better believe it's going down. Warriors Nation is going to BRING IT!

Also props to my man DJ Fuzzy Logic for dropping a nice recap after a tough, tough loss.

agreed
just posted similar comments to yours.

another point: we need Monta and Al to get out of their funk. this would be a great time for them to show up. a 6 man rotation is hurting us. maybe they just got tired towards the end. hell, they're working hard enough.

Where the !@#$ are you now, Billy Owens????

Jason Terry should have
had the shit kicked out of him by our bench. WTF were they thinkin lettin him do that to Baron right there in front of their eyes?
I can live with the loss but not with the failure to protect a teammate.

by Skeptic con Urquell on May 2, 2007 12:27 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

yes
Yeah. Let's all get suspended for game 6 so we can have no shot at game 7. Super smart.

Playoffs in '07, baby! *It Happened.*

all get suspended for game 6
" so we can have no shot at game 7. Super smart"

There's players on the bench that we could do without if they did get suspended. If they are not playin then they should contribute by protecting Baron? A tight team takes an attack on any player personal.

Three problems. . . .
# For the first time in weeks, the W's spent the last three minutes on offense just pounding the ball.  When BD got doubled, no one moved.  I thought I was watching last year's team.  Bad shot after bad shot. 0-8.  The w's have to remember: motion, motion, motion; run, run, run.  That's what got them here.  That's what they stuck with when they fell way behind.  They have to do it ALL THE TIME.

# Defense?  There was none the last three minutes.  Nellie must still be spinning, because it's when the wheels come off your offense that the D must get tough.  The looks on their faces -- especially Pietrus -- were that this game is lost, even when the W's were still ahead.

# Exhaustion.  Imagine how much energy it takes to come back from down 21 on your opponent's court.  I thought they could gut it up after Dirk's first big three.  I was wrong.

OK.  Nightmare over.  Let's see if Nellie can get these guys back on track.  That's a tough three minutes to overcome, but this is where Nellie and BD need to show us what they've got.  It's got to be loud for 48 at the Oracle.

that killed me

You're so right. . .
That was the best look they got in the last three minutes.  Even if JRich missed -- and he shouldn't have -- he'd be on track for a shot at the RB.  Out guys just wilted.  But it should be a good lesson learned: I don't expect that to happen again -- at least not tomorrow night.

by johnl on May 2, 2007 10:59 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I think he even got
Dirk in the air to draw a foul

I couldn't understand why a team takes 3 pointers with a 9 point lead and 3:00 left?  WTF  take it to the hoop and get fouled

I know they are here because of the loose street ball style but man that game was there for them to take if they player smarter

by Zig on May 2, 2007 11:09 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

yea i think
JRich did get dirk in the air...i seriously thought he was gonna run into his body and take a three, and shoot free throws all of a sudden he dribbles out and has an open jumper or he could've have went to the basket hard (drawing another potential foul)...there was so many viable options there but he didn't choose any of them...
rubbadubdub thanx for the playoffs!!!

112-103
ugh.

just watched the part of the game on my Tivo when the Warriors came back from 7 down to 9 up in the fourth quarter, climaed with Baron's miraculous three. just wanted to sleep well with some memorable moments from that game. shut it off after that. Damn, they played so well. Alley-oops, swarming D, and unconscious from three.

Unfortunately, the three's are what cost them down the stretch. They just became so dependent on them that when it came time to counter Dallas' desperation run, they forgot to penetrate. We were so hot from downtown, that the Mavs would have bought any pump fake and we should have been driving the lane and drawing a foul.

Although there were some questionable calls, gotta give credit to the Mavs. Dirk, who was unexplicably non-existent during the entire second half (2 shots before his consecutive three's, are you kidding me?), may have rediscovered himself and showed and the worst of times why he is the MVP of his team ('bout freakin' time). As much as I despise him, Devin Harris came to play, and seemed to get to the basket with ease in the fourth quarter. The Mavs took this game (with a little help from the Dubs).

All in all, we should be proud that our team showed the nation once again how much heart we do have. Coming back from 21 points down against a team that was clearly determined to make a statement. And if any of you hae the courage to watch the fourth quarter again, it was some of the best basketball the league has presented this season (unfortunately, it was followed by reminders of the Warriors during the middle of the season - standing around, doing nothing).

They pretty much choked. Things were going way too easy, and they weren't mentally prepared to handle Dallas' last run, which they should've expected, and that's a damnn shame. One things for sure: if they get a lead like that in Oaktown, this thing ain't going back to Dallas.

They key to game 6 will be the first 6 minutes. They need to do whatever it takes to erase the momentum Dallas has right now. They need to avoid a Dallas run that would give them an early 6 or 8 point lead. I really think they should try to jump on Dallas as quickly as possible to make the last 3 minutes of game 5 a distant memory.

I sure hope this happens, because a lost series would be tough to take.

Where the !@#$ are you now, Billy Owens????

by Manute4Three on May 2, 2007 12:16 AM PDT   0 recs

The threes didn't kill them
They were the only thing that kept them in the game.  Had J-Rich actually shot the J and buried it, we're discussing this in the "Who would you rather face: jazz or rockets" diary.  Like Nellie says: if you run a system, and you a run a play...the open man HAS to take that open shot.  What else is the point of running a play?

by GameSix on May 2, 2007 11:24 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

NIce.
I'm glad that you put Barnes as the WarriorWonder as he provided much needed energy off the bench and was the catalyst for our comeback.  Don't forget about Pietrus as well, he stepped up tonight as well.  How 'bout Baron though?  Man, when he made that crazy shot at the end, I seriously thought it was over as I jumped up and down... well, you know how that turns out.

I agree that the Warriors exceeded our expectations, by barely making in the playoffs as people have said, but you know what?  We're here now.  We shouldn't settle for just making the playoffs, we should be here to WIN. By showing that the #8 Warriors can beat the #1 Mavericks IN the playoffs and all will know... that 300 Spartans gave their last breath to def-... errr whoops, wrong quote!  But yeah, aim for the best.

Just stop and appreciate
That BD-> J-Rich alley oop late in the game.  That to me was a huge huge statement.  That's the way to storm into someone's house and announce yourself. Dirk can sink a million 3-pointers and it still looks like a freakishly tall guy taking chicken shots.

When the Warriors beat you, they show you what's what.  They take your ball, they block your shot, they drive on you, they dunk on you.  Even if you manage to win by hauling up three pointers you can get off because you've got a half-foot height advantage and they took away your drive, it's not the same kind of conquering.  Dirk had his best game, no doubt about that, but the infuriating parts were Stackhouse, Harris, and Howard.  They score on you.

The Warriors Close It Out Thursday
This loss though deflating, should have taught the young warriors something about closing a game and not falling behind too much.

Despite the choke, I think they will be proud of the ir 30 point swing and they have to be thinking if not for so many botched layups in the first quarter(when the Mavs were making their run) this would have been a blowout.

So I think offensively they should feel good. Defensively they should be able to correct their end game mistakes.

Baron & Jax are going to be fired up.

Warriors win by double digits Thursday.

DJ
I have to say that this is probobly the best recap you've ever dropped! Even a Basketball Diaries reference!

It was really informative than the surface NBATV, ESPN or TNT highlights, and helped fill in my questions because my satellite went out for the majority of the game :(. Stupid rain!

With his past behind him, Adonal looks toward the future, wherever it may be....

We were resilient today
The Mavs came out firing on all cylinders but we took their best shots and were still there (to say the least) till the very end. We'll take care of business at home, I know it.

All you guys lucky enough to witness the action at the arena, REPRESENT the rest of us watching from their homes, at sports bars, and slingboxes worldwide!

GO WARRIORS! BRING IT THE HOUSE DOWN ON THURSDAY NIGHT!

by snelj22 on May 2, 2007 2:12 AM PDT   0 recs

a really fair recap here
I think your assessment of the refs is accurate - short of the last 30 seconds and the whole "we'll let Jason Terry stay in even though he thinks this is the WWF" thing, they didn't do much wrong.  Even the phantom 6th foul I'm willing to give a little leeway on - the ref jumped the gun assuming the Ws would intentionally foul, but MY first thought was that it was an intentional foul, too, so I can't get TOO upset, y'know?

That said, all the national media types thinking Dallas has some life now have no idea what they're talking about.  I think Reggie Miller had it right - Dallas needed to blow us out tonight, assert their dominance somehow.  Their complete inability to keep that 21 point lead is why we've got the edge going into game 6...

Too Many 3s at Crunch Time
I thought the Warriors had a chance to win tonight.

Oh sure they had a 9 point lead with about 3 mins. to go, but Dirk got hot and the Warriors wilted under the pressure.  They shot a couple of 3s when they didn't have to.  They should've got the ball the Baron or Jax.

Also, they got a couple of rotten calls by the refs against them.  I couldn't see where Baron fouled Jason Terry and JRich got hacked on the arm but no call.

Finally, Charles Barkley needs to eat his words with one more Warrior victory.  We'll be ready for the Mavs on Thursday.

by callahan on May 2, 2007 3:32 AM PDT   0 recs

Jack ejection
I made this comment in one of the diaries, but i didn't realize refs could just throw you out cause they feel like it.  Jack only got one T, Dirk only shot one extra ft and even the boxscore shows 1 T on GS.  Have refs always been able to toss players at will?  How did i miss this rule?

by dirrty on May 2, 2007 7:26 AM PDT   0 recs

Today's going to be a nailbiter....
I'm hoping the league doesn't suspend Jax for a game.  I just remember what Stern said in an interview during game 3.  He basically said the next time Jax causes a commotion, a suspension would be warranted.  Hopefully that's not the case

by ThermoElectro on May 2, 2007 7:47 AM PDT   0 recs

I thought
Jax took the ejection pretty well for it being such a BS ejection.  He didn't say a word and seemed to be pretty calm for SJax.  I don't think he will be suspended because the ref felt like throwing him out with 8 seconds left.

by yehyeh82 on May 2, 2007 8:30 AM PDT   0 recs

TIming.
The curious thing about this game is that it - to me - it's a game seven lesson during game five. Despite all the disappointment, we're up 3-2, and the series goes on; we learn, and we live to fight another day. I doubt we'll see another game like that. I suspect on thursday we'll beat 'em at the track meet.

by justin on May 2, 2007 9:36 AM PDT   0 recs

key factors heading to thursday...
  • how the League handles the Jax situation.  it was a very questionable ejection, i agreee.  at most, if i were the ref, i'd throw a T if warranted. but i can't figure out the basis of the ejection.  the refs gotta keep their heads in the game as well, b/c this now makes it 2 ejections, and puts Jax in a precarious position.
  • that's a tough call on Baron.  i understand how refs can call those in the heat of the moment.  but if so, then they gotta call the foul on the other end on the Dub's 3 pt shot as well.
  • the League's gotta look at Terry's elbow/throw down on Baron as well.  whatever Jax was called for seemed to be based on clapping.  Terry's foul was a physical act of aggression.  at the very least, both of these cases need to treated fairly and objectively.
  • personally, i'd like to see EVERYONE kept in the game for both teams, cuz it's  been a heck of a series and Game 6 (and 7, if necessary) will be altered due to these calls.  if Stern is going to consider past incidents, then i believe that Terry and Jax were both assessed technicals in prior games, i think?....go fine them several hundred thousand if that's the case, but to take out any players from either team in this series...the League better have a very strong case for it.
  • Nellie and the Dubs gotta lay it all out on the line in Game 6.  It's time for ALL of the Dubs (even Azebuike, Sarunas, etc.) and Warrior Nation to step it up to the fullest!  Show the Mavs and the rest of the country what Warriors basketball and the 'Bay is all about!
  • (If necessary, Game 7 will be the ultimate gut check in the greatest series I've seen in many years. We might not even need it! so that's for another time to talk about.)

by warriorsfan4life on May 2, 2007 9:49 AM PDT   0 recs

Several additional thoughts
Great recap (as usual) and I too firmly believe that with the home crowd behind them the W's can dominate Game 6 and take this series. I fully expect them to win going away. I see a 16 point win.

However, this game illustrated several key items for the future of this GSW franchise who will no doubt have serious title aspirations next season:

  1. We have no half-court offense. None, zero, zilch, nada. Up by 9 with 3+ minutes to go we tried to milk the clock. Bad move. BAD, BAD, BAD move. As composed right now we are a run-and-gun team and the half-court is not our friend. I love the up-tempo, small-ball, Nellie style team, the problem is that when you start to milk the clock you need to be able to get into a play with 6-10 seconds left and we just don't have that as part of our game. Thus we REALLY DO need to get a low post offensive presence. I love Al Harrington and Pietrus but if the two of them could somehow become a real power forward in the offseason (KG, Gasol, Jermaine O'Neal, Brand, Kenyon Martin, Zach Randolph, Kirilenko?) that would really solidify us for next season and prepare us to eventually face the likes of Duncan in the Conference Finals.
  2. We NEED to re-sign Matt Barnes. That dude has ice-water in his veins. Is he related to Robert Horry or something? Because he is clutch and as we continue to build for the future he is a vital part of the direction we need to go.
  3. OK, now don't get me wrong on on this one: I LOVE STEPHEN JACKSON. He is everything that Shawn Marion is with a toughness that just wills victories. In several games down the stretch of the regular season he carried this team to the win on his back. I've been a Stephen Jack fan since he was with the Spurs (disclaimer: I am a massive Spurs fan as well) and I've always hoped for better for him than the Pacers. Having him on our team is a dream come true for me. That said, he has a little switch in his head that goes off and he becomes a complete head-case. I fully support Nellie in publicly calling him out and saying that Jack would be getting a massive fine directly from the coach. Jesus Christ, this is Game 5 of a playoffs and the officials have already tossed the best player in the entire post-season for clapping/mocking them 3 games earlier. You just don't do that. Besides, he was mocking them for calling the 6th foul on BD with the Warriors down by 1 and 21 seconds left. I personally was jumping up and down in front of my TV screaming "FOUL HIM!!! FOUL HIM!!!". If I'm an official I call a foul when Baron even gets close. SJ needs to grow up or Nellie needs to bring down the hammer on him...HARD!
  4. One more off-season will do wonders for Monta and Andris. They both look a bit overwhelmed in this series. Both are missing shots in the paint and in the regular season they simple didn't miss in the paint...ever. These two are going to get some time to do some reflecting (and time for Monta to work on his mid-range jumpshot) and will come back next season as veterans. That's what the playoffs do to you, the make you a VETERAN. The regular season is fine and dandy, but the steel in your resolve get's tempered by going through the fire and this playoff series is one of the hottest fires we've seen. I am really looking forward to seeing how these two progress.
  5. That brings me to the potential of this team. I am SOOOOOO EXCITED about where this team is going. I honestly think that we could be raising banners (plural) at the Oracle in the years to come. However, frankly I think that the sky is the limit...RIGHT NOW! Once they win on Thursday and then take care of Houston (or Utah, but I just don't see them winning in Houston) the next true test will begin. If the Suns somehow beat the Spurs in the 2nd Round then we will all be in for the treat of our basketball lives. I believe that we can outgun the Suns and then we would DOMINATE any Eastern Conference team (either Detroit or Chicago, Cleveland has no chance). On the other hand, if the Spurs beat the Suns (and I believe that they will in 5), we could be in trouble. As I said earlier, we need a real PF to contend with Duncan and to score in the half-court.

by McJ on May 2, 2007 9:50 AM PDT   0 recs

Half-court offense
Our half-court offense is no where near as refined as our open floor, but we do pretty well in the half court.  What killed us at the end was that we ran the clock down too far before making our move.  The possession should start no later than 10 seconds left on the 24 to ensure we get a good look.  I agreed with trying to run some clock, but we didn't leave enough time to explore more than one option which IMO is a huge mistake.

Yes, there's got to be a better use of time than just dribbling it off.  If somehow a dunk presents itself with only four seconds run off, just take the points.

But even before that
with 3:00 minutes left we were taking some bad shots

thats when you have to attack the basket.  No need to be shooting 3s

To the rack
That's exactly my point.  The Dubs were running the clock down to 5 before making their move which forced them to take long jumpers.  If they make the move at ten there is enough time for a couple passes to find an open look.  Even an inside to out three would have been nice.

But why let the defense get set?
If we are going to run, let's run for 48 minutes...not 45. The reason that running works is that you get to work your offense before the defense gets set. Even if we tried to run a play with 15 seconds left on the clock we still would be attacking a set defense, which this team is not really very good at, especially when they pressure Baron to get the ball out of his hands.

Watch the Suns close out tonight's game against the Fakers. I bet they keep running until the final horn sounds. That's what we need to do.

Then they better get good at it FAST!

Still like our chances
The Mavs played pretty much a flawless game.  Irk was as good as he is capable of being, Howard was lights out, Terry was very good, Floppy Harris was excellent, Stackhouse was good, Croshere seemed to knock down everything, Diop finished at the rim, and Damp was a complete piece of crap.  Yes, the Mavs played their A-game.  Despite everything going their way we should have won the game.  I'd say Baron was playing over his head by not missing a shot in the second half, but in this series it almost has to be expected.

Going in to Game 6 we're still in the drivers seat.  Harrington and Ellis played better and will allow Nellie to buy Baron a couple minutes on the bench.  I think his minutes last night are what made the Dallas double team so effective.  We have seen their wrinkle on defense and I would fully expect us to get a couple easy buckets when they go to the same game plan Thursday.  Also, we should never let the ball get into Pietrus hands in a key situation, he is a bad shot waiting to happen.

SJax
He had total stone hands today.  Did Diop really pick his pocket off his dribble?  He had 5 TO's and a lot of fumbles which he managed to recover.  If he caught these clean, he could have kept the flow of the offense going and could have maybe driven.  It was really weird seeing this.

For many lesser players, that would have totally destroyed their confidence.  But not SJax.  Near the end of the game I caught him looking at a fan in the first row and holding up 3 fingers on one hand and 2 on the other.  Yeah, sucka as*d Bandwagon Mavs fan, we still got the lead.

This claiming probably had a hand in his baffling ejection.  But it does show that SJax is a cold blooded competitor who a close out game 6 in front of a ridiculously loud Oracle Arena crowd is made for.

well
with our collapse and dallas' execution we just saw the difference between playoff veterans and playoff noobs. i didn't like the foul calls being called on devin harris' drives. HE WAS JUMPING INTO THE WARRIORS AND GOT THE FOUL. Thats at least a no call. Dirk wasn't fouled either, it was a clean block by Barnes.

But all in all, the Warriors didn't execute and we can't blame others for losing yesterday. The Warriors choked. i just hope the 9 point lead with 3 and a half left doesn't come back to haunt us.

Here's hoping it doesn't come down to game 7.

game 6
I know this has been said before but I want to reiterate:  all of you who will be in attendance at the Oracle on Thursday better represent.  Those of us watching at home are dying to be there to support the team. Seriously, none of y'all better have any voice left after the game.  We need to represent the bay.

by bdizzle on May 2, 2007 1:56 PM PDT   0 recs

We're all a bit nervous
I can tell.  This is going to be a real battle on Thursday.  Let's all represent.  I am going be the loudest mofo in the bar (and the only one not watching hockey, let alone rooting for the Dubs).

The posters above have made some excellent, wise points.  I can not add anything more intelligent on a strategic level.  I'll just say this will be a test of the Warriors heart.  I think they have it.  Let's show Dallas fans how we love our team and how we have stuck with them through thick and thin and how we don't hate.  Dallas is a good team, a well-run organization with some ballers (Terry and Howard, at least).  But they will fall because

WE BELIEVE!!!!

Watching at Bars
I can't watch these Dubs Playoff games at Bars. There are too many distractions and I enjoy listening to the TNT announcers and the crowd without the worry of buying a round or getting hit on by smoking hot chicks (haha!).  I was at the game on Friday and Sunday but can't make tomorrow's game.  That being said, I can't wait to hear how loud THE ORACLE sounds on TV.

Let's do this, Dubz.  One Dub, One Love.

I wish I could watch it at home
Don't got cable and even if I did, they don't always televise the early rounds up here in Montreal.  It's a great sports town but they know nothing about basketball.  But I've found my little spots and they tolerate me freaking out.

Mad props
Shout outs from Canada! Love watching the Warriors. I thought you guys were on the ropes big time in the second quarter but the way the team just keep firing away is amazing. Absolutely no conscience whatsoever. It's so impressive to see the swarming defence whenever Dirk gets the ball and the ridiculous speed that the Warriors bring closing out on shooters is crazy. You see the double and triple teams and you just assume someone has to be open and by the time the ball swings, the defence recovers...just outstanding.

I will be shocked if Dallas can deal with the Oracle in Game 6. We've had a great run up here with the Raps, over 20,000 every night and loud, but at least you guys got it right by picking a t-shirt colour that the visiting team doesn't wear! Go get that win!

by Apollo on May 2, 2007 3:27 PM PDT   0 recs

question..
did you guys break the record for most people attending a basketball game for all of canada?

by dj fuzzylogic on May 2, 2007 3:35 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Franchise record attendance
I think the attendance was a franchise record, or at the very least an Air Canada Centre record, where capacity is 19,800. The only other possibility would be if they somehow had more for the franchise's first game back when they played at SkyDome or when Jordan came to town back then because I'm sure capacity was more back then.

Ok, Then we gotta have a raptors-warriors NBA finals. Would be no loser in that series.
Always nice to hear from our neighbors up north.

Raps - Warriors final
Well, I'd love to see it. My parents live in the Bay Area so I'd be flying back and forth. Raptors have a terrible road record so Game 6 in Jersey isn't looking too good but no matter what, make sure you guys take care of business at home in Game 6 and you can carry the hopes of all the teams that have been absent from the postseason for a while with you. After all, this is our first playoffs in five years.
