The Official GSoM "Predict the Lottery" Contest

Well, this would be a lot more fun if we were in on Tuesday's draft lottery festivities, but let's give it a go anyway. If nothing else it's a distraction from the procession of outlandish trade proposals here (I mean, sheesh, Harrington for Artest? Be serious!) All you have to do is correctly pick the Top 3 teams in the draft. The winner receives the same glittering prize the GSoM Fantasy League winner got: that is, a lifetime free membership to GSoM, a free webpin of your choice, and Coma's personal e-mail address.

Anyway, here's my pix:

  1. Portland. The fix is in from Nike in Beaverton.
  2. Chicago. Which would mean Isiah Thomas would have essentially traded the Bulls Tyrus Thomas and Kevin Durant for a fat center who can't rebound or block shots and has a heart condition.
  3. Boston. Bill Simmons actually, truly sets himself on fire.
For reference, I'm listing the probabilities of each team getting the #1 pick (yes, strangely, they add up to 100%). Percentages for picks #2 and 3 and other info on the lottery can be found on Wikipedia.

25.0% Memphis
19.9% Boston
15.6% Milwaukee
11.9% Seattle
8.8% Atlanta
6.3% Minnesota
4.3% Portland
2.8% New York
1.7% Charlotte
1.1% Sacramento
0.8% Philadelphia
0.7% New Orleans
0.6% Indiana
0.5% LA Clippers

Yup
#18, POB, Cabbages, Foyle, and Chris Cohan's outstanding IRS debt for #1.

Thanks for getting this up
Haha nothing like Sleepy's %'s. I got an open thread planned for Tuesday morning. Even though the Warriors aren't in the lottery this year, STAKES IS HIGH!

why
is memphis not on the poll?

anyway, here's my guess:

  1. atlanta
  2. boston
  3. memphis

D'oh!
Did I forget to mention, forget to mention Memphis? (Talking Heads reference.)

And they have the best chance of all -- silly me. Not sure if I can edit a poll, but I'll try...

by Sleepy Freud on May 20, 2007 11:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

No luck.
Ah, well, feel free to vote for Memphis as a write-in candidate.

So far it looks like the Warriors (with approximately a 0.0000000000000031% chance, by my calculations) are the consensus pick anyway...

aww aren't you special?
you were given some attention and then wanted to avoid it?

that says a lot about your character... you like to avoid attention and be in control of when you're in the spotlight... sounds like... a kid who had issues... tisk tisk

Good one.
Wow. While we're on the topic of character, I love it when illegitimate nerds like you make sure to comment all my posts, like a good little pony.

You missed a couple in "tha dunk again". Get to work, pony.

I want all
the tanking teams to suffer. They should never put their fans through something like that. Boston is the worst of them all. Boston needs to get the #4 pick.

boston, memphis, milwaukee = that order
i think it's rigged for boston.  hope we make something of it.

i want no prize coma related, thank you very much, last thing i need is a boy full of hatred.

mr. sleepy, did u check my photo recap of the season? (about 4 or 5 diaries back).  please do, i value ur feedback sir.  despite our differences, i think ur an intelligent guy (on most days), and enjoy interacting with u.  1 dub.

Did you want my opinion on the pix
Or on the continued flame wars in the comments?

On the pix: loved 'em. In fact, I almost posted a link to the diary on another site, but then thought some of the jokes were a bit GSoM in-jokey.

My Top 5...

  1. #26 -- I've already made my feelings on that clear, right? Just a perfect image: the chiaroscuro of the sharply-lit figures on the Rembrandt-black background ... the quiet defiance and insouciance of the expressions ... is that enough BS for ya?
  2. #14 -- Pretty self-explanatory. On a side note, I'm very glad you remembered to put a comma in the caption.
  3. #23 -- Pretty much sums of the GSDubz philosophy of life, I think.
  4. #1 -- I've made my position on Ron-Ron pretty clear, right? Get him. Sometimes in life you gotta take risks; and honestly, I don't even think it's that much of a risk.
  5. #5 -- Hilarious caption. Not sure whether to lol or, you know, run to the bathroom...
On your little lover's tiffs with Atma, Coma, and Travis: as you may have noticed, I try to stay out of them. If you step away from the bench during a skirmish, you get suspended, right?

"1 Dub." Not exactly sure what it means, but I think it applies.

that's luv man, that's luv.  thanks for the comments... i was hoping u'd like #7, with Pam Oliver staring from afar, practically drueling at the thought of interviewing Baron lol.

Btw naah i don't want u involved in the coma wars, everyone hates him and tells me to ignore him but thing is i have a friend who's a psych phd and he reads his comments and has actually helped paint a picture of him and his (perhaps) troublesome life that causes him to be so angry... so i'm building it up. lol.  as for atma, yeah stay away but if u see me out of line tell me to cool off i don't want to fight with atma just like to debate him when i think he's wrong.

You have a nickname for the burns I deal out on you?

I don't think this is near a war. More like "The Coma Wears Me Out Every Time I Post Something Stupid, Which Is Every Time I Post Something Altercations."

It's mostly me baking a humble pie, and then stuffing it down your throat.

BTW, tell your PHD friend to go get a job and to stop psychoanalyzing my posts. Seriously, that's the oddest and most disturbing thing I think I've ever heard.

I think Comas webpin explains it all.
He just is a no-nonsense guy. While I don't agree with everything he does, I can understand his frustration.

And Dubz probobly has all of his college friends psycho analzing everybodys posts and he has 500 page long profiles of everybody on his computer.

Come on guys, Indiana will get #1 as part of the deal with the devil to take Dunmurphy.  And to boot Mike Jr will make the All-Star Team in 2008.  Just wait and see.....(LOL)

Minor (actually MAJOR) correction/clarification
Atlanta's first-round pick goes to--that's right--Phoenix (Joe Johnson trade). So clearly they're gonna land the top pick and we're all going to slap our foreheads in disgust. Unless of course they decide to trade Marion in a cap-clearing, PF-slot-clearing move, and we miraculously manage to snag him. Hey, it's the offseason--time to dream!
  1. Phoenix (via ATL)
  2. Memphis
  3. Milwaukee
  4. Boston (just cuz I want to read the Simmons column afterward)

by ffgolden on May 21, 2007 12:18 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Actually
I'm 99% sure Atlanta's pick is lottery protected, so Phoenix can pick no higher than #4. Of all the teams in the draft, Atlanta's future as a franchise hangs the most on this lottery. They could get Oden, Durant ... or nothing. Terrifying if you're a Hawks fan.

Part of me kinda hopes they get Durant because it might prompt them to move JSmooth, Childress, or Marvin Williams. I'd like to see any of those guys on the Ws.

by Sleepy Freud on May 21, 2007 1:55 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh dang
You're right, my mistake. I thought I'd read that it was unprotected, but it actually looks like it's unprotected in 2008 instead. Man, I like Joe Johnson and all, but that's a tough one to swallow, unless Atlanta nabs Oden and end up making the playoffs.

by ffgolden on May 21, 2007 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

my predictions for the top 10
  1. Memphis  (25.0% chance of 1st pick) - Oden, becuase well, wouldn't you if you had the #1 pick?
  2. Phoenix (via Atlanta) (12.6% chance of 2nd pick) - Durant, becuase Phoenix really deserves a shot at making it past the Spurs next year.  Can you imagine a lineup of Nash, Barbosa, Durant, Marion, and Stoudemire?
  3. Minnesota (7.0% chance of 3rd pick) - Brandon Wright, so they will be more likely to FREE KG to the Dubs!
  4. Boston - Mike Conley Jr, best PG in the draft and Telfair isn't coming back.
  5. Milwaukee -     Al Horford, becuase they need a 4.
  6. Seattle - Yi Jianlian, who will massively boost attendance at the games and keep the Sonics in Seattle.
  7. Portland - Corey Brewer, who I predict will become a solid NBA starter within 2 years.
  8. Charlotte - Jeff Green, becuase they need another scorer.
  9. New York - Joakim Noah, becuase the Knicks need a new underperforming player to overpay.
  10. Sacramento - Roy Hibbert, becuase Brad Miller's knees can't possibly have that many more seasons left in them.

Lottery Predictions
The Atlanta Hawks will keep their first round draft pick if they have the Top 3 pick. If they pick at #4 or lower, that pick goes to Phoenix. Atlanta also has Indiana's lottery pick from the Al Harrington trade.

by Phil T28 on May 21, 2007 1:41 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good call
Darn protected picks!  Apparently this means that Phoenix will get Atlanta's pick next year if it's not in the top 3.

Lottery Prediction
The Chicago Bulls will get New York's lottery pick because of the Eddy Curry trade. Just letting you know.

I wasn't going to guess...
but since it's "official" I guess I have to.

1.Seattle
2.Memphis
3.Milwaukee

if I win I will use my prize to email coma a B-day greeting every year. Of course I would have to win the next "official" contest when the prize is "find out when coma's birthday is".

C: Oden

Hmph.
#1. Boston Celtics
#2. Portland Trail Blazers
#3. Atlanta Hawks

I find it funny because the Hawks fans will think they're saved, but then they'll realize that they won't get Durant or Oden. Then they draft some bust and continue on being the Hawks.
