OPEN THREAD: NBA Lottery 2007 @ 5:30pm PST on ESPN
![]() |
Ladies and gentlemen it's time for another edition of the NBA Draft Lottery! Many of the usual |
I'd like to take this opportunity to say goodbye to a painfully loyal participant in the yearly lotto festivities, the Golden State Warriors. The Dubs have been a cornerstone of the NBA's late May NIT (Not In Tourney) Classic, but thanks to a little Nellie, a heist of the Indiana Pacers, MIP Monta Ellis, Matt "Mohawk" Barnes, the BoomRich backcourt, the end of the curse, and the best fans in the league the Warriors are sitting this one out. I honestly feel a little sad that the Warriors aren't participating in the annual Spring Suck Classic, but believe me after that crazy playoff run I'll get over it fast.

Have fun fellas- ya'll earned it!
NBADraft.net, an excellent draft site all year round, has all the key info on the 2007 NBA Draft. Here's their breakdown:

A few things things to keep in mind:
- The top 3 picks in the draft are determined by the ping pong balls. The remaining teams' selections fall in the order they are listed above.
- If the Hawks don't move up to a top 3 selection, their pick goes to the Suns.
- As long as the Dunmurphy Pacers don't miraculously defy the odds and jump up to a top 3 spot, their draft selection heads to the Hawks.
Warriors Nation's wishlist for this afternoon:
- Please let the top 2 picks go to the Eastern Conference. If Greg Oden and Kevin Durant end up on the Grizzlies, Sonics, Blazers, Timberwolves, Kings, Hornets, or Clippers the Warriors will be in serious trouble for years to come.
- Please don't let the the tank-job Minnesota Timberwolves move up to the top 3 spots. The worse they are, the more likely Kevin Garnett will hopefully be moved.
- Please don't let the Pacers retain their draft pick with some super lotto luck. The last thing I feel like hearing about is how great Mike Dunleavy is going to be alongside Oden or Durant. Let's spare Pacer fans from that nonsense too.
- Please let the Hawks nab a top 3 selection. It would be a nightmare if the Pacific Division-rival Suns got ahold of a top 3 pick to add to their already stacked squad. Plus Harry the Hawk has shown Warriors Nation plenty of luv.
- Pretty please with a W on top, make these happen Commissioner Stern!
This year's draft should make a big impact impact on the league for years to come with names like Greg Oden, Kevin Durant, Yi Jianlian of The Movement fame, Al Horford, Brandon Wright, Corey Brewer, Jeff Green, Corey Brewer, Julian Wright, Mike Conley, Al Thornton, Joakim Noah, Thaddeus Young, Nick Young, Acie Law, Tiago Splitter, and Daequan Cook to name a few. This afternoon's lottery will be incredibly entertaining- well at least more entertaining than the NBA's final four this year.
Not that this makes much sense given that the odds are already set in place, but any predictions for today's lottery? Who will be the winners and losers?
Make sure to give us your predictions in the comments before 5:30pm PST and post any comments you have during the lottery right here.
Stay tuned for our 3rd annual live blogging on the NBA Draft!

If the Clippers
It's weird to not be on edge for the lottery. Its weird, actually, to not be in the situation where you have the best chance of winning, yet know that you have no chance of getting the first pick. How life used to be as a Warriors fan.

Lottery
Helloooooooooo... ?
Come on, I know we're not in this lottery thing, but you guys do realize this might be the most momentous day in NBA history since like the Tim Duncan lottery -- right? And last I checked, the Warriors were in the NBA. Imagine how different this league would be if the Spurs has lucked into Duncan in '07. Entire franchises will made and broken for the next ten years based on today's lottery results.
At the very least, you'd think we'd be interested to see who we're going to be facing in the West Conf. Finals and the NBA Finals over the next ten years. ;-)
The balls apparently have already been drawn, so it's all over now but for the revealing...
Lets gooo....
#2. Portland Trail Blazers
#3. Atlanta Hawks

PATRICK EWING
(For anyone who doesn't know, that year was the reason the lottery is how it is now. Back then, everyone else had equal chance, even the best team. They picked every team, not just 3 like they do now. The Warriors (who had the worst record) got the VERY LAST pick. Talk about bad luck. WE COULD'VE HAD EWING!!!!!"
Yeah I caught that

I am pretty worried about a
atlanta will get a lot better as well
They could take say, Brandon Wright at 3 and maybe Mike Conley Jr, at 11 if he falls.
But still, Portland's gonna be a beast!! I think that pretty much assures Randolph will be moved within the next two years to open room for the two young studs they have or will have. I can see them moving randolph for a decent veteran SF. But don't forget they still have Martell Webster who was hurt all of last year.
all i can say is
The J-RICH show is back!
All is not necessarily lost for the Dubs...
Onto the Dubs. Like I said, here now begins the more interesting shakedown and talks about trades, positioning, and drafts. Assuming Portland and Seattle keep their heads and get Oden/Durant (vice versa), might they, the Hawks, or any of the other teams listed earlier tonight be open to any trades or moves? I bet Mully is already making inquiring phone calls just to get some feelers out there as things shake down....Looking forward to hearing what the other teams buzz about....

Warriors need to make a play for KG now...
I agree
Still hard to imagine they'd do it unless we switch out JR or AH for Biedrins; and I'm 100% against that. Garnett will need at least one other talented big man to help him defend the post and keep him fresh.
Really, the only way I could see a Garnett deal happening is if KG demands a trade and puts the Ws on a very, very short list of desired destinations. One can hope.

Um...
Durant plays the same position as Lewis with a very, very similar skillset. Lewis hasn't shown any inclination of playing PF and they already gave a 3 year contract to Chris Wilcox.
Durant REPLACES Lewis, Lewis goes to Orlando or Charlotte.
Seattle still sucks. How much more production is he gonna give them above what Lewis did? It's not like Durant solves their defensive woes.
Portland is a far bigger concern since they can send Randolph to the Bulls for #9 and Nocioni, then draft Brewer. That would be lethal.
by OptionZero @ Golden State Of Mind on May 22, 2007 9:13 PM PDT reply actions
Seattle is a concern
Ridnour
Watson
Allen
Lewis (if they retain him)
Durant
Collison
Wilcox
That's a lot of talent, at least as much we have. If they jell right, or if Baron has another one of his 20-30-game knee flare-ups, they could easily pass us.
As for Portland: they look like a sure playoff team right now, even if they stand pat. As has been pointed out, Oden will take a couple of years to develop offensively, but he's ready right now to be one of the most dominant interior defenders in the league.
by Sleepy Freud on May 22, 2007 9:32 PM PDT up reply actions
um...
Collison and Wilcox rebound but don't block any shots. Neither has any offense to speak of, none of them command a double team.
Their three-headed project center spot is a joke.
Ray Allen is 32.
Rashard Lewis, as mentioned before, plays the same position as Durant. Why would they bother paying for a guy that plays the same position as their franchise savior?
They should eat the Lewis savings and trade Allen to get even farther under the cap, maybe even pick up another pick.
They need to figure out whether Ridnour is in the plans or not, benching him is stupid, especially since they just re-signed the guy.
I don't have much respect for Seattle.
They should deal Ray Allen and Earl Watson to Houston for Bob Sura's expiring contract; Juwan Howard and Vassilis Spounolis' (2 years remaining each) and Rafer Alston (3 years remaining) as well as additional first rounders. Gain additional salary relief and stock up more draft choices. Give my brother Yao some help. Everyone wins.

oops
Houston ought to be sending Luther Head and Kirk Snyder Seattle's way.

their big guys do suck
Remember that NBA experts say that if Lebron had been in the draft this year (pre-NBA Lebron), that they'd pick Durant over Lebron.

The Reality of Sign and Trades
If Seattle is intent on rebuilding around Durant, letting Lewis walk scott free is hardly a big loss, since they will pocket a ton of cap savings.
Sure, maybe Robert Swift capitalizes on his potential and becomes a paint scorer; maybe Chris Wilcox combines some actual defense to go with his rebounding; maybe Ray Allen squeezes another productive year out; maybe Durant proves he can out-produce Rashard Lewis (a pretty effective player in his own right); maybe they figure out their point guard situation; maybe one of their young player gives them useful rotation minutes; maybe they can win despite inviting disaster with TWO french players on their roster.
But I don't think so.
Portland: Trade Zach Randolph and a second rounder for Richard Jefferson. Smile at the best young core in the NBA (move over, Bulls)
Roy, Jack, Oden, Jefferson, and Aldridge. Crap.

Blazers, Sonics, Hawks !!
I'm not gonna over estimate the difficulty of the Warriors making the playoffs again next year though. It's gonna take more than the first year for the Portland and seattle new draft picks to get up to NBA speed. If we worry about our own business and tweak the flaws out of our game we should be fine.
Their big name picks might be a blessing in disguise for us if it requires the other teams to spend more on one player in future years, as KG has shown you can't win championships alone and the more money spent on one guy the less left to build a team.

Unbelievable...
Yeah, I realize that doesn't even make sense. How about just making a rare exception and allowing the Warriors to switch? We'd be a shoo-in for the playoffs, and the air miles would be incredible...

You gotta respect geography a bit
That said, I think the league should seriously consider messing around with some of the Central-and-Mountain-zone teams. Here's my modest proposal:
- Milwaukee used to be in the Western Conference; they could be easily sent back, along with Charlotte and Indiana. They'd all probably grumble, but they might console themselves with the knowledge that they'd instantly become 55-loss teams and thus well-positioned to rebuild themselves through the draft.
- In exchange, Dallas, Houston and New Orleans could all be sent to the Eastern Conference, where they'd immediately become the Top 3 contenders for the NBA Finals. None of them would complain, least of all Dallas, who would never have to face their Bay Area nemesis in the playoffs again.
- New Orleans' Oklahoma City alter-ego could be taken over by Charlotte, to ease the teams' travel burdens. Everyone confuses Charlotte and New Orleans anyway; other than Zorgon, few people would even notice.
- A few other teams switch divisions to ease their travel burdens and/or to make it all even out.
Atlantic
Washington
New Jersey
Philadelphia
Boston
New York
Central
Detroit
Houston
Toronto
Cleveland
Chicago
South
Dallas
New Orleans
Miami
Orlando
Atlanta
North-Midwest
Utah
Seattle
Minnesota
Indiana
Milwaukee
Pacific
Golden State
Portland
LA Clippers
LA Lakers
Sacramento
Southwest
San Antonio
Phoenix
Denver
Charlotte-Oklahoma City
Memphis
OK, yes, a couple of those divisions are ridiculous strong (Central and Southwest), and a couple just a bit too easy (Atlantic and Pacific, fancy that). But the main problem -- the overall talent-gap between the Conference -- would be significantly alleviated.
Anyway, it's a thought. ;-)

hmmm
Obviously division winners get an automatic berth. March madness NBA style!

Let's Go Oakland! Gas, Brake, Dip.
the Texas teams
How about what baseball and football do?
Dear Basketball Gods,
- The Suns didn't get the Hawks first pick. That was a close one....
- Obvious tankers didn't get rewarded. I also hate Celtics fans, Danny Ainge, Doc Rivers, Boston sports fans, and their media (I tolerate Bill Simmons, who fits into most categories). Thank you for this.
3) The Timberwolves didn't get the first or second pick. Which means that KG won't be giving the T-Wolves the "ol' college try" anymore...
FREE KG! (preferably to the Warriors)
anyways thanks,

FREE KG ?
If we want to play smallball we need talent all through the roster so the money has to be spread. If we want to sign a shack-kobe type of team then we could pay big money to a couple of guys and little money to the rest and be successfull but we need 8 or even more very good players to run at nellies pace for 48 minutes.
