Rumor: Warriors Likely to Deal Richardson, Ellis, or Pietrus and O'Bryant

Here's tidbit from blogger hater and rumor generator Sam Smith of ChicagoSports.com:

A golden state? The Warriors are likely to deal Jason Richardson, Monta Ellis or Mickeal Pietrus because they all play the same position. Meanwhile, it's clear Don Nelson will never play Bradley's Patrick O'Bryant, the No. 9 pick in the 2006 draft, who might be worth a shot for someone with a low first-round pick.

It's tough to say whether Smith has any real inside knowledge of the Warriors, though he often likes to write like he does. Remember this is the same guy who manufactured the utterly ridiculous "inside knowledge" that JRich was telling his friends in late March when the Warriors were in the middle of a huge playoff run that he was hoping for a trade to the Pistons or Bulls (see Rumor: Jason Richardson Wants to Go to the Pistons or Bulls and Sam Smith is Messed Up).

However, there is probably some truth in Smith's thought that some of these players won't be playing in the Bay next season. It would be pretty surprising if the Warriors held onto JRich, Ellis to the Rim, MP2, and The Notorious P.O.B collectively. That's a quarter of the roster filled with off guards and one very raw project who has shown no signs of panning out for the Warriors.

Restricted free agent Pietrus could fool some teams like the Toronto Raptors into overpaying. Hopefully, Nellie stops Mullin from matching any ridiculous offers Pietrus might get on the open market.

It would be mighty impressive and defy the odds if the Dubs could turn O'Bryant (the Warriors' 2 million dollar D-League wonder) into a a low 1st round pick in this loaded upcoming draft, but then again they did find someone in the league stupid enough to take on both Dunmurphy contracts. You really never know what can happen and that's what makes the offseason so much fun.

Do you think Richardson, Ellis, Pietrus, and O'Bryant will all be Warriors next year? Who do you think is the most likely to be moved? The least likely?

99% of rumors never happen, but 99% of them are fun to talk about!

yep
sam smith is blowing smoke out his you-know-what in terms of "inside knowledge" but hes probly right. MP2 is likely gone, and i wish him the best. hes an awesome guy just didnt have the instincts or smarts. as for POB, we could probly package him with the nets 2nd and grab one of the suns 1st rounders. POB could fit well into their system and they need size. i hope neither ellis nor jrich is leaving tho

kernals of truth
There will be a few of those guys leaving the team as sad as that might be.

All these players were part of something special this year.
But back to reality...

Barnes walks for the mid-level and MP goes to some team willing to overbid on him.  Having said that, it doesn't make much sense to trade J-Rich because his 3-pt shooting becomes even more valuable since the others leave.
Managment will try to make a deal, but unless Monta is included no one will be interested.  If the price is right, I say make the trade with Monta.  Small quick guards are a dime a dozen.

by ballerjl on May 24, 2007 10:29 PM PDT   0 recs

make the trade with Monta.
I have to agree. Jason is bigger, more experienced,  and tougher on the boards, Pietrus is a defensive asset worth keeping around if his price is not too high so Monta would probably be the best balance of   getting the most in trade for the least loss of depth. If we could move foyle, cabbages, pob, and monta we could probably find a better back up point guard and use the rest of the money to help pay for a big banging power forward?

sam smith
i remember that crazy rumor from earlier this year. i was hoping he had retired after that one. this one has more merit tho, we're all pretty sure that at least one of those 4 will be gone (pietrus)

Jrich and Ellis
Jason Richardson - it'll be a sad day when we trade Jrich.  It's kinda like he stuck with us and produced through the thick and thin of the Warriors dog days and we kick him to the curb to get to the promised land without him.  When the Warriors were struggling he was the ONLY reason to be a Warriors fan.  Some say that this is strictly all business though, but it's sad to see the Warriors getting all "Hollywood" and forgetting about the little guy that never complained and was the heart and soul of this franchise.

Monta Ellis - This guy is special.  Maybe he didn't produce well in the playoffs, but he sure got us there.  Cut the guy some slack, how many 21 year olds do well in the playoffs?  Even Kobe tanked in the playoffs early in his career.  Don't forget that Monta Ellis is the epitome of what we want Warriors basketball to be.  Basketball analysts always say he led the league in fast break points, and I wouldn't doubt it.  Not only that, but when we see our Dubs get too content with the 3pointer, Ellis takes it TO THE RIM.  The little guy shot 48% from the field as a 6'3" guard, how special is that??

I can't say the same good things for Pietrus and O'Bryant.  Pietrus sure did show some hustle, but he is replaceable.  POB was and will be a non-factor for this team.

hahah
Ellis has a higher ceiling than Richardson. Bye bye Jrich.
Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league. Purgatory is thy home.

by kenntoe on May 25, 2007 7:01 AM PDT   0 recs

not unless
he develops at least a decent 3 pt. shot. until he does Monta is an extremely limited player. All he can do is drive. Can't board...can't pass...etc. Personally i'd take Jrich over Monta. But i love Monta as a 6th man and would like them to hang onto both. Pietrus is the guy that will be gone..and maybe  POB as well.

Let's Go Oakland! Gas, Brake, Dip.

by OaktownFunk on May 25, 2007 9:14 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

that would be tough
JR was basically a forward on the National Champion Michigan State Spartans at that time. The comparison would probably be the same as it is now. Better rebounder, bigger, stronger...not as good dribble driving...not as big a liability on defense in the post...etc.

I will post later
I´ll post later a very deep study I made this last couple of days about this year Free Agency and what the Warriors need.
I´d love to see the Warriors trade Ellis, Al Harrington, Patrick O Bryant and the 18 th draft pick to Phoenix and get Shawn Marion, I know we´d have to include a third team to make it work, but I think it would be possible since Phoenix is looking for a guard to help Steve Nash and more help off the bench. I´d love to see Biedrins, Marion, Jax, JRich and BDavis.

contracts
I don't know if Pietrus will get a ridiculous offer, but he'll get interest.  Luckily, teams need cap room to go after him and there aren't a whole lot of teams who will have cap room.  Though meaningless at this point, it's a good test of the "lock them into early extensions" vs. "let the market set a price for restricted free agents" comparing the bad deals Dun and Murphy got to whatever Pietrus commands.  Pietrus has to hope that one of the teams with cap room wants him.  He's gonna get looks, but based on the sort of offers that Wilcox got last year, I wouldn't be surprised if he's still around and not grossly overpaid.

by jae on May 25, 2007 9:22 AM PDT   0 recs

Very good point
You're right, Pietrus probably won't get a big offer as a restricted free agent. Chris Wilcox had to more well regarded last season that MP2 this year.

I wouldn't be surprised either
MP is one of the six guys Nellie stuck with down the stretch despite his struggles. He must see something that we don't and I trust Nellie's assessment.

by triplesix on May 25, 2007 11:09 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

agreed, and
MP is certainly replaceable, as are all our expiring guys (though Barnes played over his head late)

where you been JAE? haven't seen you post in months ...

where I've been
i've been lurking, trying to see if I could pay attention to my job for at least 2 hours a day.

And of course the run up to the playoffs were too exciting for my usual brand of bland, raw statistical analysis.  Stats may mean something over the long haul.  They have some real value for long term roster decisions, but come a short series, yah just gotta sit back and watch the magesty of it all, logic be damned.

2 stay, 2 gone...
I see no reason the Warriors would keep O'Bryant, he'll never play for them, and each year he loses trade value. I doubt they'll keep Pietrus. Nellie love Monta, and Mully love JRich, so i see them both staying. thankfully.

2006 Draft
I bet the W's wish they could do that one all over.
Left hand, right hand, it doesn't matter. I'm amphibious.

Question
Just to balance my trade equation... Is it possible to make a sign and trade deal with pietrus and include him in a deal to send him, Patrick O Bryant, Monta Ellis and Al Harrington to Phoenix for Shawn Marion and Piatkowski or James Jones I dont know... is it possible to include a sign and trade player in this kind of deal?

trade jrich
I hope the warriors don't trade ellis at all. i would rather trade jrich ellis is going to be more valueable look what happened to arenas

by ptantemoy on May 25, 2007 3:14 PM PDT   0 recs

JRICH is going!
If anyone is moving its gotta be J-Rich. Maybe Monta! J-Rich is basically the only trade value we have and if we trade him we might get a real superstar to the bay or at least a dominant big man! Randolph, Garnett, or Gasol. I dont care, just bring one!

by ballin on May 25, 2007 3:28 PM PDT   0 recs

the same guy who said miami would trade shaq
whoever writes sam smith's payroll check should have his head examined...

Don't You Think It Depends on
Which team has who we want and who they want or feel they need in return.  I think the question is more who has more trade value--J Rich or Monta.  The rest of the discussion about POB and Cabbage, etc is only relevant to make numbers match.  Unless you throw in Foyle because then, in combo with J Rich, we'd be talking about getting a player at or over $18mil.  KG you say?

The bigger the contract of the player we want, the more it might involve J Rich unless Foyle is involved.  Perhaps Harrington could figure in any of these discussions because he has value as a player and also has a more sizeable contract.

What we don't know is who Nellie really wants on the team next season to give him the motivation to leave Maui and return to coaching.  If we knew who he would like to get, then we could make better assumptions of who we might be losing in such a trade.  Otherwise, although it is fun, we are just guessing.  If I were just guessing, I think we are more likely to lose J Rich than Monta; and I'm also guessing POB and Cabbage will be a part of any trades that take place.

by commish on May 25, 2007 10:26 PM PDT   0 recs

JR or Ellis? Neither
Unless KG is coming in, and the front office has decided to try and win now, then I keep both of these players on the squad.

If the warriors attempt to acquire a starting-caliber big who can rebound, then Harrington is the one who has to go.  His contract is too big for his abilities anyway.

When all is said and done, I think the warriors will stick with their current rotation.  Foyle and sarunas will be trade targets.  POB will probably be unloaded.  And the warriors will have to choose between Barnes, Chuck Hayes, Mikki Moore, and similar players to fill out their bench.  But I see all 6 of Baron, Monta, JRich, Jackson, Harrington, and Biedrins returning.
