PLAYOFF OPEN THREAD - Game #6: Warriors vs Mavs - Ours For the Taking.

It's time to make some history.

Warriors: 3-2

Mavs: 2-3

Time: 7:30 pm PST

TV: TNT

Radio: KNBR 1050

I have to admit, so far this has been one of the most entertaining playoff matchups that I have ever seen. Granted, it would have been better if we had shut down the Mavs in Game 5 in Dallas, but we can solace in the fact that tonight the Warriors have the chance to close this epic struggle on their home floor. Will it make a difference?

Twenty thousand screaming fans say it will.

IMG_6283

The last place on earth the Mavs want to be.

Tonight the Arena will become the pulse of the Bay Area as the Warriors take the floor in their final Oakland standoff against the mighty Dallas Mavericks. And it is going to be anything but easy.

With their back against the wall, Dallas did everything that they could to prevent elimination on Tuesday. Insane shooting in the first (and overall), well rounded scoring from their starting 5 and bench, and perhaps most important, someone actually lit a fire under Dirk. Successful as the Mavs were, the Warriors did a magnificent job of preventing a routing, going shot for shot with Dallas while their crowd stood and watched in a horrified silence. (Personally, that was my favorite part of the entire game.)

We didn't get the win that we wanted, but we succeeded in slowing Dallas's momentum down in order to set the stage for tonight. The Mavs are going to get anything but peace and quiet in the Arena. It's going to be vital for the Dubs to feed off of this energy and gain command of this game from the first whistle. Contain Dirk, contain J-Ho (who has been an absolute nuisance to us this series), and make smart plays to the basket. We cannot afford to waste possessions tonight.

Everyone needs to be a beast. Monta and TMNT have not quite found their playoff rhythm yet, but they cannot rely on Baron and Jax, who along with JRich and Barnes have been carrying this team throughout this series.

And the fans? I don't even need to tell you what you have to do. Be LOUD. Be insanely loud. If the Warriors get the lead, get LOUD. If the Warriors lose the lead, get LOUDER. No respectable GSoM member should have their voice tomorrow. If you are at home, shout at your TV until your neighbors call the cops. Then when the cops show up, have them come in and get loud too. Be sure to offer them something to drink though. It's only polite.

The Mavs actually have the guts to step back into our house tonight. Let's play some 5 on 20,005!

Predictions:

  • Warriors by 6
  • Baron drops 30+
  • TMNT wakes up with some NASTY inside plays.
  • No one is able to hear a word the TV announcers are saying.

Make sure to give us your predictions in the comments before tip off and post any comments you have during the game right here.

GO WARRIORS!!!

Faith in the Dubs
As disappointing as the ending of game 5 was, it gave me even more reason to believe that the Warriors are the better playoff team in this series. The question now is do thay have the killer instinct?

In every game, they've been competitive. Technically, they coulda won ANY of the first 5. Unlike the Mavs, the Dubs have figured out how to dismantle their opponent (game 3). The only reason they lost twice is because of mental mistakes and foul trouble, NOT because of any particular Dallas strategy. If they play smart (and act right) they'll come away with a W tonight.

I have a good feeling about tonight. It'll either be a blowout or a nail-biter. But it will end in Oakland!

Matt Barnes Injury - Pulled Hamstring
KNBR announced this morning that Matt Barnes has a pulled hamstring.  I wonder if it's related from game 5 towards the end of the game where I saw him limp a little bit but still played the last few minutes.  He's played with a broken a finger, can he be productive with a pully hammy?  Go Dubs!  Sec 219, Row 17, I'll be there!!!

that he pulled it in the first quarter,so hopefully he will be ok and keep it loose. he said that he will play no matter what

Woo.
The pressure's on Dallas tonight, boys. They've not been able to beat us in Oakland, and I don't expect it to start now. Barnes will have a reduced role, so expect TMNHarrington to go off tonight. He's ready. He knows what he has to do.

Jackson's gonna take care of the rock while helping play the point to stop the raucous double teams on Baron. Dirk will still be soft old Dirk. He's not ready for this crowd.

It will be a collossal struggle, but the crowd will carry the Warriors over the top. They will make history tonight. Our guys will make HISTORY tonight.

Believe.

Jason Terry will get fouled into the crowd attempting a desperation 3 pointer towards the end of the game.  He will get tangled with a Warriors fan who shouts at him and taunts him but DOES NOT attempt to keep him from re-entering the game.

SHOCK THE WORLD!!!!!
tonight's the night to make history. we really don't want to go back to dallas for a game seven. we must come out of the gate hot for two reasons: first, the mavs have jumped on us early the last two games forcing us to play catch up. we can't have that happen again. second, we must stop any momentum the mavs may have from tuesday's 15-0 run.

NO RESPECT!

NEW YORK -- Golden State's Jason Richardson was fined $35,000 by the NBA on Thursday for improper interaction with a fan during a playoff game in Dallas.

Richardson had a heated verbal exchange with the fan after missing a shot and falling out of bounds with 21.9 seconds left in the Warriors' 118-112 loss in Game 5 of the first-round series. The fan reportedly filed a complaint with NBA security.

Dallas' victory gave the Mavericks a 3-2 series lead, with Game 6 set for Thursday night in Oakland, Calif.

Bill Simmons on the bandwagon
The power of the roar of the crowd
As for Warriors fans, it's a little more simple: They play in Oakland and have the most eclectic mix of fans in the league, so their home games have a different feel, almost like an upscale version of Rucker Park. Earlier this year, my wife and I were trying to determine whether we wanted to leave L.A. and live somewhere else for a few years (just to mix things up), and during the course of the discussions, she brought up the Bay Area. Well, you know why I couldn't live there? Because of the Warriors. If we moved there, I'd end up purchasing Warriors season tickets; inevitably I would be compromised by those unique crowds, placing me in a precarious sports bigamy predicament since I'm utterly and completely disgusted by the Celtics' front office and ownership right now. It would be like a guy who hates his wife hiring the hottest 20-year-old Danish au pair on the planet. Just a bad idea all the way around.

my father in law, who is 73 yr old and from boston, just scored us some club seats through his hotel(of all places) so we are on the way...

predictions

  • massive games from jax, bd and jrich
  • ticky tack whistles
  • free throws galore
  • my father in law possibly losing his hearing
  • WARRIOR'S WIN

by stedanko on May 3, 2007 5:15 PM PDT reply actions

WOW!!
everything about my predictions was right EXCEPT my father in law's hearing was ok by the time we got off bart. :)

the big games from bd, jax and jrich were all different than the previous 5 games this series. plus that face job on dirk by matt barnes was sick.

those ref's were pretty bad for a few stretches of the game. however, i certainly did not expect most of the ticky tack fouls would go our way and for the w's to shoot so many more free throws...

the goodbye chant for dirk after he sat down was 1 of the top moments of the night. the jrich dunk and 3 to stuff dallas' atempt to comeback was a massive moment for that crowd. the 11 and 12 point runs, the biedrins blocks, all those freaking steals, the tron showing celebrities and the free shirts were great too.

i know we saw snoop and woody, but i am not sure who else we saw there.

it was so much louder than friday or sunday night. we had no idea what had happened to baron when he went out. luckily, a buddy who was watching from home replied to my request for an update by text.

You won in convincing fashion for sure.  Baron Davis is the MVP...of the playoffs (which is the one that counts).

For such a young team, they played with a lot of poise.  The credit goes to Don Nelson and B. Davis.

I'm rooting for the Dubs all the way (it's the only thing that will make the disappointment less painful)!

YYYEEEEESSSSSSSSSS!!!!!
I love all of you!!!!!

Fantastic game. I'm sorry we had to expose Dirk in such a brutal fashion.  But you can't make an omelette without breaking some eggs.  GO DUBS!!!  What an awesome game.  That was not only a definitive victory, but a succesful learning opportunity for the team, particularly Biedrins (another solid outing) and Ellis, who kept the team in the game at the height of the Mavs toughest attack.

But overall, well I'm just delirious.  What a great, tough game.  Davis was clearly hobbled, Barnes was wincing.  But they dug it out.  And the crowd got quite quiet there, so they didn't even have that advantage.  The Warriors showed heart and toughness.  Who wants to play them?

You all rock!

WE BELIEVE!!!

Bring, it, Utah.

by walkerp on May 3, 2007 11:27 PM PDT reply actions

That was awesome !!!
I caught this one in a Santa Barbara bar (Sharkeez) with a big HD screen right in front of me.  What few Mavs fans there were got awfully quiet.

Then when the game was over, the bar put on "You Shook Me All Night Long"!!!

Congrats Warriors; you could not have won any more convincingly!

What an amzing feeling.
Just got home from work here in Australia. Didn't get much done during the game, I was checking the score from mobile phone every 2 mins. When I finally finished and got in the car I just screamed with joy. I didn't think I could love this team anymore than I already did..I was wrong.
