OPEN PLAYOFF THREAD: Jazz @ Rockets- TNT Saturday (6:30pm) - A date with who?

Rockets (W-L): 52-30
Jazz (W-L): 51-31
Time: 6:30pm PST
TV: TNT

To be perfectly honest, in my humble opinion it really doesn't matter who we play next. Beating the Mavs in the first round felt like winning the damn Super Bowl in the Bay Area (ok exaggeration). Not only did it show the world our heart and passion, but proved to the critics out there (ahem Barkley) that the Warriors are legit and can hang with anyone. Now it's time to see how far our "We Believe" movement can actually take us.

Tonight's final first round match up between the Houston Rockets and Utah Jazz will determine who we play in the second round. It is the proverbial fork in the road, where one team is well coached with a never die attitude and another who has two legitimate superstars ready to be contenders.

The real question is, who do we want to play? Who do the Warriors match up well against? At this point it's a toss up who will win tonight's game. The Rockets have an edge playing at home, however taking a Jerry Sloan team lightly could cost the Rockets another disappointing early exit. The closest playoff series so far will impact the hearts of Utah, Houston and Warrior fans everywhere.

Warriors vs. Jazz: The Warriors and Jazz split their series this year 2 a piece. Looking at the scores below it basically came down to home court advantage. Both play extremely well at home and have a reputation for both having hostile crowds. As demonstrated this week, the Warriors have us fans to thank for getting them over the hump. I've been saying it all year, the Jazz are a great team and we will have a hard time matching up against Boozer, AK47, and the rest of the sharp shooting Jazz.

November 4 @ Utah L 82-106
November 25 vs Utah W 91-78
March 20 @ Utah L 100-104
April 9 vs Utah W 126-102

"We have to play who next round?" - Boozer

Warriors vs. Rockets: Why on earth would we want to play against Yao Ming (though it would be great!) and TMac? Two larger then life stars in this league have shown all year that when healthy and together they could go all the way. Yao can dominate anyone down low and TMac has the propensity to light it up at anytime. But somehow I think we are a better match up against the Rockets. Nellie can exploit Yao's speed and TMac's offense, as we did against Dirk and the Mav's. Winning two of the three this year, the Warriors showed that we can beat the Rockets at home and on the road. But as the saying goes, be careful what you wish for!

December 5 @ Houston L 90-118
December 14 vs Houston W 109-107
April 4 @ Houston W 110-99

Can we really stop these two?

TMac has been criticized for never reaching the second round. Teamed up with the larger than life Yao Ming, he looks like he can get over that hump tonight.

Let me know who you would rather play.

Vegas Odds: Rockets by 5 (as of 11am PST).

Prediction:
*    Rockets win by 3.

Make sure to give us your predictions in the comments before tip off and post any comments you have during the game right here.

Thanks to mike D for posting the Open thread earlier today.

UPDATE: Bring on Utah!

I want Rockets to win!
To see Yao and Tmac play. And I think we have a better chance against them then if we played the Jazz.

Maybe Adonal vs Yao Volume III????
Doubt it, buuuuuttt.....
With his past behind him, Adonal looks toward the future, wherever it may be....

Houston, no problem
Definitly would be interesting to watch the contrasts between the warriors and the Tmac-Yao rockets.
At the start of the season I picked the Rockets to win the NBA championship so now that the Warriors are in the hunt I'm hopin I'll be wrong.

houston
let's face it...we've gotta win one on the road no matter what, and it's impossible to beat utah in utah.  i like our chances against houston much more...

by richmindseed on May 5, 2007 3:21 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

definitely utah
when the game is on the line, who is gonna be clutch for utah? also, the last game the warriors won against houston i wouldnt count since tmac got injured and didnt play for most of it.

by llamalimbo1 on May 5, 2007 3:32 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

houston cuz they only have two good offensive
players, and Yao can't guard anyone when we play Harrington at C like we did the last time we played. Plus a combination of the Rockets guards sucking at entry passes and Yao not being the quickest guy with his moves means our aggressive D will produce alot of turnovers. Houston does shoot alot of 3's, and our D gives up open 3's, so that might be a potential problem. But it's much less of a problem than having to face big guys that can play on the perimeter like Kirlenko, Boozer, and Okur.

Houston.
I think we have a great chance against the Rockets. First off, they can run well, and Yao is extremely slow, so everytime we get a rebound or a quick inbound, we can have a guaranteed 5 on 4 which usually means a baron drives and either 1) gets an easy layup. 2) dishes to pietrus or JRich in the corner, or hits a trailing Jax or TMNTHarrington for a 3 or drive.

Also, I really think we can stop T-Mac's offense they way we did to Dirk. And we can really harrass Yao.

Also, there are really 3 extra keys to winning a series against Houston, in my opinion.

  1. Contain Shane Battier.  He's a great glue guy, and he can nail the corner 3. If we focus too much on Yao and TMac, and leave Battier open, he could go Jerry Stackhouse on us which could make for a long series.
  2. Al Harrington needs to play well.  Last meeting with the Rockets, we exploited Yao's weaknesses. Al attacked him, and played incredible defense. We won, and held Yao under 10 points for only the second time all season.  Biedrins is my man and all, but we need Al, he cannot disappear again.  As much as I love Adonal Foyle, we don't want to see him get big minutes because TMNTHarrington's stinking and Biedrins is in foul trouble.
  3. Continued strong bench play. Keep up the good work, Mickael and Matt (and Andris!)! And step it  up, Monta and Al, so that we have a strong 8. In my opinion, Houston has an extremely weak bench.  The bench is a huge factor in a 7 game series, and that would be a great win for this matchup if our bench outplays theirs.

by chili01 on May 5, 2007 3:44 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Houston
They're guards are too small to guard Baron and Jrich. Utah's on the other hand are pretty strong and quick and can cause problems for our backcourt.

by racsan on May 5, 2007 3:44 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Also...
No playoff experience (or rather, no successful playoff experience) for the Rockets. the Jazz have DFish.

by bradyk2 on May 5, 2007 3:47 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

we can take either team
they both have strengths and weaknesses.  i guess i'm a little more scared of houston, as they have some of the karma-factor that we have - especially t-mac and dikembe, both of whom seem to be good guys who haven't won the big ones, yet.  that guy luther head also seems to be a lights-out three-point shooter.  at the same time, their team as a whole would definitely have a hard time keeping up with our energy and speed.

in terms of utah, really only boozer should be a problem for us.  i don't know how we match up with him.  at the same time, they don't seem to have the guns to keep up with our scoring team.

either way, the dubs just need to rest up and get ready to roll!

by OaktownWarrior on May 5, 2007 4:23 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Houston...
Easily, the Warriors can run circles around the Houston Rockets. The Houston backcourt has nothing on Baron Davis or Jason Richardson. Skip to My Lou and Chuck Hayes? This is comparing NBA and NBDL. So, Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming would have to pick up the slack from the backcourt but this is where alies the problem. How has Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming FG% in this series? Absolutely Horrible. People will claim that their transition defense can stop the fast breaks by the Warriors but if Tracy McGrady does the same where he goes 9 for 25 and Yao hitting 9 for 20, there will be way too many opportunities for fast breaks.

This will eventually tire out Yao Ming who just played 40 minutes plus in a best of 7 series with one of the best frontcourts in the NBA. So how tired will Yao be? This is horrible for the Houston Rockets. Not only that, but Al Harrington completly destroyed Yao Ming when they played, exposing Yao's weakness with quicker centers. So it is pivotal for Harrington to play well.

Now as for the Utah Jazz? This would be hard but at the end the Warriors can pull through if they hit the shots. The Utah Jazz have no chance at all if the Warriors stay 35%+ from the threes. This would bring out the Utah Froncourt which allows Baron to drive in.

by BTT on May 5, 2007 5:59 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I'd rather see
the Rockets. It would be fun to watch Yao and T-Mac. Also we seem to play better defense when we have one or two stars to focus on and "swarm". Maybe playing against Yao will get Al going.

Luther Head

is it possible
to lose to a team 4 times lead by derek fisher?
conversely, if we play against Houston, is it not 4 on 5 at least half the game?
who knows with this one.

by justin on May 5, 2007 7:14 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

True....something about Luther Head....
He got the Warriors pretty good for some reason once  or twice in the past, for some reason. I'm looking forward to any team out there...like some players have said, as long as the Dubs keep playing their own style of ball and are strong mentally thru the whole game, anything is possible.

Update...looks like Utah's got out to a double digit opening half lead.  A great time for the Dubs to do some real-time scouting on both teams today!  GO DUBS!!!!

utah up at half-time
53-43.  houston doesn't have much.

boozer inside, d williams outside.  i'm not worried about anyone but boozer.  he could go off on us (i don't see him having the esteem issues of nowitzki).  think steve jax can shut him down, or at least slow him down?

Man, stupid Jazz!
The Rockets need to come to town. And possibly if Yao starts owning, I coudl see Adonal (like 0.000000000000000019, but possible). Also, our track record against the Rockets is a LOT better than against the Jazz, not to mention Derek Fisher may want a vengence on us.

It's really hard to say who we match up with best
because when the Warriors were rollin', towards the end of the season, they played both Utah AND Houston and the Warriors beat them both... so... it's hard to say who is the better matchup at this moment.

yea seriously
it's like Van Gundy was thinking, I don't want to get embarrased in the second round, "Don't foul!!!" you know how Van Gundy usually gets hella mad after a bonehead play or a phantom foul call or something to that effect, he didn't do that after they didn't foul!!!...He was calm making a play during the time out, and instead of going for a trey which a coach who wants his team to stay alive would do he passes it in to yao whos double teamed!...two quick treys on two possesions would've tied if the jazz made two freethrows...Oh well thier loss...

one can only conclude
apparently gundy was going for the back court violation as a result of early-season pietrus-with-the-ball confusion caused by a lack of foul. who knows, but that is all i can infer.
stealing a game in the 'tah will be difficult, as will be keeping tempers under control against the hard foulers by the lake. we must contain the boil as was done last series. all will be will; our gsw tempo will break them down.

If you are a TRUE Warriors fan....
why are you scared about the Jazz and/or Rockets?  C'mon now, folks.....it's great to finally know who we've got for our Round 2 opponent!

Now let's go all out and support Nellie and his amazing crew in spurring the Dubs onto another fantastic series to come!

There's no telling how far we can go....Sure, we've got to find answers for Boozer, AK, Williams, and Co...but they gotta figure out how to deal with our crew as well!!!  If anyone's watched any of the games the Dubs have played thus far, they'd better be scared of how well we're playing as well!

Time for y'all true Warriors fans to step it up...beating the Mavs was great....now it's onto another great battle vs. the Jazz!!!!!

GOOOOO WARRIORS!!!!!

"True" Warriors fan = Not scared
Ah well, I guess that makes me one o' them "pretenders." After watching Games 6 & 7 I think there's no question that Houston would have been a much better matchup for us. Of course we're perfectly capable of knocking off the Jazz, but if you're not at least slightly worried about their three-headed beast of a frontline (with only one guy in our 8-man rotation who can really defend the rim), or the fact that they have one of the few PGs in the league who's almost as physical as Baron, you're deluding yourself.

From any kind of objective POV, this series is pretty close to a toss-up. Be afraid. Not very afraid, but afraid. It's good for the soul.

addendum....
Hey there Sleepy Freud (and other GSoMer's)...didn't mean to call anyone "pretenders"....I'm just trying to keep the good times rolling as the Dubs head onto Round 2. I know many many of us here are Warrior die-hards giving it all we've got, no matter where we're at.  The Dubs will need our support whether they're in Utah or back at Oracle!

Good point about being a little afraid.  A little bit of nervousness tends to make us more focused in doing what we gotta do.  A pretty fine balancing act...but it goes both ways, at least.  Utah's trying to figure out how to stop the blazing Dubs they've most likely been following on TV during Series 1.  Likewise, we're trying to figure out how to stop their key players.  Should be a good one come Monday night!
