Bring on Utah!

70% of GSoMers wanted to see the Warriors square off against TMac, Yao and the Rockets in the 2nd round of the playoffs, but unfortunately Houston did not have lift off in the 1st round. So it looks like the next squad that will have to play 5 vs 20,667 in Oakland will be the Utah Jazz.

Get ready for another fun, tough playoff battle. The Warriors split the season series with the Jazz this year. Both teams handled business at home, but struggled on the road:

Jazz-Delta-Center.jpg
People in Utah have been down with GSoM since Day 1.

I know we're all eager to do our homework on the Utah Jazz before the series starts on Monday night, so check out the Utah Jazz representation in the hoops blogosphere:

Warning: Jerry Sloan coached teams are physical and dirty (ahem, Karl Malone and John Stockton). They're all about making the game ugly. Nellie and his Warrior crew are going to be playing the role of the Fun Police this entire series.

What are you most looking forward to about this series? What are you least looking forward to?

Stay tuned for more preview madness of the 2nd round festivities from your boys at GSoM!

dam i wanted the rockets
we will still win this series but it would of been easier with the rockets. oh well bob fitzgerald wanted the warriors to actually go against the jazz, so maybe he sees something. We can win all the home games, im just worried over a road win, they have been close to doing it but still have not done it yet. I think the road win that we get will be one of the most exciting ones. Possibly a last second shot, and it will come from somebody that we won't expect, (Possibly a desperation 3 pointer from CITIZEN FOYLE!)

Round 2
I am just looking foward to seeing the Warriors playing again, and trying to win Game 1 or 2 on the road, because that will make life a lot easier coming back to Oakland. I am very confident the Warriors will win one in Utah, and once the Warriors are back in Oakland, no contest.

I am not looking foward to Carlos Boozer, he reminds me too much of Charles Barkley in that '94 series. He can do serious damage against the Warriors frontline. That is the key to the series, keeping Boozer in check as much as they can, because he is a beast.

Game 1
We gotta take game 1 and set the tone. I think the mental high that the Warriors are on is going to carry them over a mentally and physically drained Jazz squad.

where did you get that picture!

btw Atma, the arena they play in is now called "Energy Solutions Center" not Delta Center.

Jackson
As long as you have that thug Jackson you will never win. All you have to do is get under his skin. I don't see why you guys even like him. There is a reason why he isn't playing in Indiana anymore. If Ron Artest is a 10 on the crazy scale then S. Jackson is an 8 or 9. I wouldn't be counting on him in the playoffs.

but he's our loose cannon. Plus we'd rather have a passionate, hotheaded guy than bleh-bleh Dunleavy.

When I say win
When I say win I mean the championship. He has talent. But I just don't think he has the mental toughness. He loses focus and gets frustrated.

We got Pistons fans on GSoM? Barbarians!

I still think the Pistons fans got off way too easy for the brawl in the palace. They shouldn't be allowed to have an NBA team after that mess.

With the second round 2-3-2 format. . . .
Our dubs will split the first two in Utah, then come home for 3 straight home games (victories).  Dubs will finish the Jazz in 5!

Droppin' Sci.
All series except the NBA Finals are played in a 2-2-1-1-1 format. The NBA Finals are played in a 2-3-2 format.

my bad. . . ,
it is 2-2-1-1-1.  I thought it was 2-2-1-1-1, but Gwen Knapp of the Chronicle had it as 2-3-2 in her 5-6-07 article today.  okay then, dubs in 6! peace!

Detriot Pistons fans on GSoM?
Boy, You know who they fear when they are drawn to this site. Just a repeat of the Dallas trolls I guess. BTW I dint think they were Detroit pistons anymore, I thought they were the Japanese pistons these days?

when's the official preview?
i'm getting antsy for this game, and we've got about 24 hours to go.  i'm thinking we've got some keys to the series and then there is one KEY TO THE SERIES.

keys:

  • get our guards scoring like there is no tomorrow (b-diddy, j-rich, monta)
  • let steve jax shut down okur like he did nowitski
  • keep a big man in the middle to prevent too much slashing from AK-47 and D-Williams
KEY
* somehow, someway get a handle on boozer.  i'm still liking the ADONALIZE idea (that is, have foyle foil booz with a karate chop), but a second bet is to basically double team and force the rest of the Jazz to win the game.  if we have jax on okur and then everyone else helping on booz, can the jazz really win?  who else has the heart on that team to stand up to us?

so, i know the pros will be writing this up soon, and it could be that i am procrastinating on some other stuff i need to do, but all the same: let's talk about the game tomorrow!  go dubs!!!

Harpring always plays us tough
I think they match up better against us than Dallas did. We are in for another wild ride, IMO.

I would have liked Houston
but I think the Dubs can take Utah - they just got to contain Boozer

by danschmeck on May 6, 2007 6:44 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Ellis will be key
Looking for Monta to take it too D-Fish.  Ellis should rebound well in this series.  He knows he's better than his performance against Dallas suggests.

Not looking forward to the Boozer/Okur combo.  Boozer is going to be a problem.  There is really no way for the Warriors to stop him.  Okur can be handled- as long as he's not hitting from downtown.  If he is- he's trouble.

The series is gonna be a Dog-Fight.  If Baron is healthy I expect the Warriors to dominate the backcourt battle- and Win in 6.  Golden State is not going to lose at home- if current Arena conditions remain constant.  I don't know if Russell's Celts could win in the Arena right now.  The Warriors should get at least one in Utah and wrap it up at home- AGAIN!!

Interesting Adonal idea...maybe...maybe...
Some of ya already mentioned about using Adonal.  I think that might not be such a bad idea, since Utah has much more of an interior offensive game (esp. with Boozer) than the Mavs had.  The drawback possibly would be that we'd have 4 offensive guys with Foyle as the question mark in the middle as well as being 1 man short (er...slower) on any fast breaks we'd run.

IMO, Harrington, Jackson, and especially Biedrins will need to play smart and avoid the early ticky tack fouls.  It'll be interesting to see the inside battle and how it shapes up in game 1.  With Biedrins and Foyle, we've got 2 guys who love shot blocking and have made their $$$ on that, aside from inside put backs and dirty work.

As long as we keep up our hustle and intensity, I think we'll prevail ultimately over Utah...I'll give it 6 games.

Just from looking at some recent Jazz highlights..
in their Series 1 vs. the Rockets, it sure looks like Okur likes to stroke the 3 from a particular spot on the court (left side of the court, about 45 degrees to the basket).  Now is that just mere coincidence, or does anyone else know more about any tendencies about the Jazz players?....interesting...

ii bet your right about okur
most NBA players have a sweet spot from deep. peitrus likes the right corner, terry likes it right where you said okur does. they all have one

by mydedgerbil555 on May 6, 2007 11:32 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Man to man defense is the key
Why did Okur take something like 5 uncontested threes in the final minutes of the Rockets choke job?  Yao had to sink down and protect the rim, because the system that Sloan runs has always entailed slashing/cuts to the basket.  Since yao is not well served chasing someone around the court, they have to plant him in the lane.  Okur can NOT get those open looks against us.  One of the big reasons we won against the Mavs was that they missed a TON of wide open shots all over the court when their penetration created those looks.

Can this Jazz team run with us?  We routed them in Oakland, and we dominated the game in Utah until an uncharacteristic late game meltdown (yes, when you go 16-5, late game chokes are uncharacteristic).  Dallas could hardly create a shot to save their life (no true pg), and when they did, Dirk & co. would toss up a brick.  Now, they do have a true PG.  And they have bigs that can knock down open looks.  Not to mention their rebounding prowess.  And Boozer.

This series is gonna be rough my friends...especially, as percentages dictate, our guards will most certainly come back down to earth from their 7/8 3-pt shooting performances.  Harrington has to show up and be a factor.  The offense has to consistently MOVE and ATTACK to get the bigs retreating and on their heels, in foul trouble, tired, etc.  It's not gonna be a free route to the hoop like it was w/Charmin Ultra Soft Nowitski "patrolling" the lane.

Nellie...show me what you got...

The offense has to consistently MOVE and ATTACK
" to get the bigs retreating and on their heels, in foul trouble,"

Yeah, Houston coulda won the last game if they'd kept drivin the lane when they got the lead instead of tossin up long range shots, the Jazz were in the penalty and either givin up easy inside shots or fouling. I guess TMac just got too tired to hit the board and dint have anyone else he trusted to give it to. I don't think we'll let them off so easy we have more scoring threats than the rockets.
