Playoff Open Thread-Game 1#: Warriors @ Jazz - This is Why I'm HOT!

Warriors: 0-0 (4-2 for the playoffs)

Jazz: 0-0 (4-3 for the playoffs)

Time: 7:30 PST

TV: TNT

Radio: KNBR 1050

Forget about Snoop, let's get Mims at the game to tell everyone why we're hot!

The Warriors just matched up well with Dallas.  The Warriors are just hot right now.  Dallas was just depressed.

The excuses for the Warriors beatdown of the Mavs keep coming despite all the convincing victories at home and away from the Oracle.  The only time I've seen so much hype and excuses was for former Warrior, Mike Dunleavy Jr.!  I mean, think about the discourse prior the playoffs... Dallas the #1 seed and most everyone (those being sports analysts) was convinced that their powerhouse deserved all the accolades: Avery for "Coach of the Year," Nowitski for "Most Valuable Player," and Harris or Stackhouse for "6th man of the year."  With all these accolades that none of them received (yet), the best excuse that they -- from some analysts and many (Mavs) fans -- could  come up with is "the Mavs just got down on themselves."  Come on now... really?

It's time for the Warriors to prove the world wrong, again!  Heck, we already shocked Commissioner David Stern.

The Warriors head out to Utah tonight against a young, upstart defensive and also offensively minded team.  This team was on fire early on this season only to drop 6 of their 7 last seven along with a 4 game losing streak in March, which led Andrei Kirilenko to grumble over his playing time and worth on the team.  However, as a lot of us have been watching in the post-season, Carlos Boozer finally looks like he's becoming the superstar everyone thought he could be after signing with Utah, scoring at will over Yao Ming.  His 2-game with Deron Williams during the series is eerily reminscent of hot-pants John Stockton and all-elbows and knees Karl Malone.  Our main man Tim K. tells us not to forget about Harpring and Okur, either.  The Jazz have been so good in the playoffs that they even made Tracy McGrady cry.

Utah, like the Warriors, are nearly unbeatable at home, winning 31 of 42 games; two of those were against the Warriors.

The Warriors can definitely hang with the Jazz, if our blowout of them at home is any indication.  The Warriors are finally becoming the shooting team that they long thought they were/are, even though many of us hope they would take it to the hole more.  Jax's shooting has been able to stretch out defenses and also give us a consistent deep threat.  Both Jax and also Barnes have finally given us the athleticism, heart, handles, and defensive at the 3 spot that we've needed since probably the Chris Mullin era (1st time around).  Anyone ever notice how Barnes is always muggin in the background of photos?

Although, Utah might own us during the season series, we have -- historically -- owned them in the playoffs! We swept them back in 1989 in the first round of the playoffs and also 3-2 back in 1987.  If history is an indication.... then the Warriors will continue to be "unstoppable baby!"

Vegas odds: Utah by 4 (as of 9:29 am pst)

Predictions:

* Warriors by 5
* Jax stays hot and hits three 3-pointers
* TMNHarrington bodies up Boozer and contains him to 21 quiet points
* JRich starts off a little cold, but gets "hot", dropping 14-6-5.
* I think we can expect a Barnes facial on Okur tonight

Make sure to give us your predictions in the comments before tip off and post any comments you have during the game right here.

we need to come out and set a tone for the series the same way we did in game 1 against dallas. show the jazz that we're gonna run like hell and force them to try and keep up.

ha zorgon
i knwo you been trying to say but adonal all the time, but this time i think they really should put him in. his low post defense will actually give boozer a difficult time scoring, and plus he is 6 extra fouls we need

I'm still laughing about that one.

What's up with the old school Jazz logo?
Why not the Mountain one from the days of Malone and Stockton?

Now THAT logo rocked.

What I want to know is why we keep getting fans of the other teams on here? Don't they have their own sites? I hope Warrior fans aren't trolling the blogs makin us look needy?

Prediction: We Still BELIEVE!
Boozer gets his, Deron(Better than Chris Paul)Williams struggles, Al Harrington FINALLY shows up in the playoffs, Monta returns to form, all resulting in a high scoring affair with the Warriors victorious in Utah by a total of 9 points.

Delahoya Mayweather
I think tonight's game is gonna look a lot like the fight.  No one team dominating and lots of counter punching on both sides.  I see this one ending up a lot like game 1 of the Dallas series (hopefully).

A low scoring affair but one of our stars stepping up at the end.

Go Ws!!

You watched that fight?
I was busy watching Utah take it to the no timeout calling VanGundy squad of Sleepy McGrady and Yao "Buttah" Ming.  You know, doing some scouting.

yea, it was a b.s. fight...
u sorta wonder what's really at stake when both guys are smiling and laughing during the fight, as they're fighting, with hardly any punches landed to each other's grills. the Bautista, the filipino dude in the first fight, was probably the best.

Warriors in 6
Ok, so here is my series prediction:

Summary: Warriors win 4-2
I see this series playing out very similarly to the last, despite the fact that the Jazz present a very difficult matchup problem in the form of Carlos Boozer. The Warriors simply have no answer for him and, as much as I LOVE Al Harrington and Matt Barnes, we simply must address the need for a bruising PF in the offseason in order to handle the Duncan, Boozer, Stoudemire, Nene type players we will continue to see in the Western Conference playoffs for the next several years (yeah, I said it, Warriors in the playoff for the next several years!). That said, Monta is WAY too quick for Fish and while Deron is potentially a young Baron, Baron is the MAN right now and Deron is NOT going to be able to contain him forever. The key to the whole series is Stephen Jackson who will be an absolute BEAST and will average 26-7-7. In the end, the Jazz will have no containment for Jack (either inside or out) and the penetration and kick for open 3's will ultimately bury the Jazz.

Game 1: Warriors 106, Jazz 98
The Jazz try to be physical and the first half is a fairly low scoring affair. In the second half the Warriors force the pace and share the ball. Williams gets caught up in the frenzy of the Warriors and Jerry Sloan gets a technical in the 3rd as the fouls pile up due to GSW early offense and Baron's continued forays into the lane. Boozer goes for 30.

Game 2: Jazz 91, Warriors 86
Utah plays punishing defense. AK-47 comes alive as he realizes that he is the only Jazz player able to disrupt the Warriors offense the way that the Warriors disrupt everyone else. His long arms in the lanes prevent the Warriors from running as much and his help defense on the interior proves too problematic for the Warriors to overcome in a must win for Utah. BTW, this game plants the seeds in Mully's head for a sign-and-trade deal this summer of Pietrus (with a new $7-8 million annual contract), Jasikevicius and POB for Kirilenko. This trade creates the Warriors lineup that wins the NBA title in 2008.

Game 3: Warriors 122, Jazz 98
Blow out. The crowd is hyped, the team is psyched, and the track shoes are in full effect as the Warriors run the Jazz out of the Oracle Arena in convincing fashion. Barnes goes berzerk from behind the line and Monta scores 25+, mainly on wicked crazy and-1's in the lane.

Game 4: Warriors 112, Jazz 106
A closer game as Sloan makes some adjustments, but the Warriors are just too hot in their own building and the fans continue to make life miserable for a team that relies on communication in the half-court set. This is Baron's signature game of the series as he really gets his body feeling right again and simply abuses Deron Williams all night long.

Game 5: Jazz 104, Warriors 101 (OT)
This is the last gasp for Utah. The pace of the game is in their favor as regulation ends tied at 93. Unfortunately, the Jazz have been pounding the ball inside all night and Biedrins and Harrington both foul out. In the extra period Boozer takes over scoring 9 of the Jazz 11 points including the layup and the foul (by Matt Barnes who is simply overmatched by Boozer's power in the post) that put the Jazz over the edge. Boozer again goes for 30+.

Game 6: Warriors 124, Jazz 109
Utah is completely spent. After fighting, scratching, clawing, biting, spitting and generally willing themselves to the win to stave off elimination in Game 5, the Jazz have nothing left in the tank. The Warriors run and then run and then run some more. Deron Williams finds himself alone on the break over and over again and while he puts up a valiant effort (registering a triple-double in the defeat) the Warriors, and specifically JRich who has 36 and is just unconscious from outside while throwing down not one but two of the sickest dunks ever seen in the playoffs, simply run away with this one to close out the series.

Jazz-Warriors playoffs history
The Warriors are actually riding 6-game playoffs winning streak against the Jazz, because in 1987, they won the last 3 games after dropping the first 2 of the 5-game series.

That last Jazz win was capped by a bench-clearing brawl that would have resulted in huge suspensions these days.  From http://ballhype.com/story/nba_playoffs_1987_warriors_and_jazz_brawl/ :

A fan took a swing at Purvis Short, and Coach George Karl charged the fan. Security people corralled Karl, but Chris Mullin went after the fan and got in a good lick.

Okur just hit a 3 from .... guess where?  45 degrees from the left side of the 3 point line.  C'mon Dubs...time for y'll to step it up and drive it in and have some guys at least try to crash the boards.  Utah is going at a very good pace thus far - I'll give them credit for that.

I don't wanna think it so, but BD and Barnes with their hamstring issues from Series 1...I hope that they can keep it up in the game, or have someone else take a leadership role on the team.

So far so good...
Harrington goes off, Baron goes off; I think the Warriors are shooting it well, a lot of in and outs. Defense really picked up too, forced some turnovers, kept them shooting outside jumpers, and most importantly, SHUT DOWN Boozer. Let's keep it up Warriors!

Go Jazz!
Replying to some of the comments.

The Jazz boo whenever Carlos 'Boo'zer scores, as well as when the opposing stars have the ball, or the refs give the Warriors dumb calls.

Jazz fans boo almost every call that goes against us. Some because they're bad calls, some because they don't help our cause. Yes, it's whining.

There are quite a few Island people (Tonga, Phillines) in Utah.

GO JAZZ!

Key upcoming plays.....upcoming plays....
I know...I'm predicting the future...BUT...time to D-up and run our offense based on certain truths.
  • Gotta guard Okur anywhere from the center of the court and leftwards when he's getting ready for a 3.  That's his preferred area, like we've said all along.
  • MP's gotta take it strong to the basket instead of getting himself stuck with the corner 3.  He's not exactly one to shoot himself out of things like some of the other Dubs.

So then they call a foul on us ON A REBOUND WITH 7 SECONDS LEFT? TO ICE THE GAME?

That's because he's CARLOS BOOGER!

I can't help but think that the REFS did it to the WARRIORS again!  JAX wasn't getting any kind of love!

So we didn't steal the first in UTAH, we still have GAME 2!  Just disappointed that we were in the game until the end, just like the 2nd home game when we lost by like 2 or something.

There were times during the game I couldn't help but laugh at the JAZZ players!  Sometimes I had to think hard to think why they're so good!  It's definitely not because they have a clutch player!  Maybe clutch rebounder!  They stay in the game w/ dinky put-backs from offensive boards and a few 3's by some guy that just woke up!

Oh and BEANS still has the better DO than AK-47!

GAME 2 is ours for the taking!  JAZZ fans should be scared we were in it and almost pulled it off!

GO WARRIORS...TO THE NBA FINALS!!!

blaming the refs?
sure, that should have been a breakaway foul or a non-call on Williams. and sure, there were other questionable calls. but i thought it went both ways. you can't always blame the refs everytime we freakin' lose.

it was a great game, and we knew that winning in Utah will always be tough. i think this game showed that we can definitely play with the Jazz at home and I'm confident that we will win at least one game on the road. I'm also confident that we will be able to hold serve rather easily at home with our crowd. tonight, we just couldn't make that dagger three-pointer to put the game away, shots we usually hit at home.

i thought davis got tired towards the end. maybe they DID all have the flu. by the end of the game, he couldn't hang with williams which is disappointing. i just wish that Davis would stop committing stupid-ass fouls (especially that last one, totally unnecessary, and took away his defensive intensity).

this series is a long way from over.

in terms of physical-ness and intensity.  Utah showed some spunk with their fast break points.  The Dubs battled hard but still need a lil somethin' more to get those boards from their bigs in the paint.  It was a battle down to who got the ball last....I still wonder if putting a spot sub like Adonal in the last secs might make some difference - a toughie since he's been iced for awhile, but his size can't be questioned.

HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT
Anyone see some kid holding up that sign?  C'mon, is that the best they can do out there?!

Where's the punchline, because that's a big JOKE?!

GO WARRIORS...TO THE NBA FINALS!!!

Dude
Didn't want to call you out, but that's twice you've dropped the G bomb. I guess you weren't here during the Hardaway flap, when it was determined something like 90% don't like homophobes. Try and find a better word than "gay" for sh*t you don't like.

Oh yeah...before I sign off for the night....GOTTA
GIVE IT UP for Matt Barnes!!!!!  That boy can play like no otha' out there.  Awesome to see the guy play through so well even despite the many current ailments to his body.  A true Warrior indeed!

yeah,
he played well, but he also made some very careless dribbling mistakes and bad passes. take the good with the bad, though.

I'm so upset!
We needed to win game one. This will be a very tough series!!
We better come out big in the second game and not let this effect our psyche!

by YaoButtaMing on May 7, 2007 10:34 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

calm down
Game 1 was not a MUST game. In fact, game 2 is not a MUST game either. I'm confident the Dubs will be able to take care of business at home, eespecially after seeing tonight's game. At home, our three's will be falling, our fast break will be ore explosive, and the Jazz will wilt under our home crowd. Our goal should be to win one of the three road games at Utah. So far, we're 0 for 1. If there's a game seven, it's a roll of the dice.

So don't panic. The Dubs showed that we can play in their "hostile" environment.

Not a must game
But splitting the opening two would be a victory for the Dubs.  Too bad it didn't happen tonight, but that was a great game.

by achiappanza on May 7, 2007 11:32 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

ugh
I have no idea how it wasn't a clear path foul when Williams grabbed Richardson, with only Baron Davis ahead of the play.  That blown call shifted the momentum of the game.

The delay of game tech in the first half hurt too.  In that situation, Pietrus needs to be smarter than to hit the ball.

by airlai on May 7, 2007 10:37 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

W's only need to win 1 in Utah
the game was close and the W's played pretty loose with the ball, especially at critical times. Game 1 was a 2 possession game that came down the to the end, so it's not like the W's can't hang with Utah. If anything, they let Utah stay in the game when they had a chance to make a big run in the 3rd quarter, but give props to Utah for hanging in there and coming back in the 4th. Utah ain't Dallas and their crowd is much better than Dallas' golf-clappers. Utah won't fold like the Mavs.

I'm not sure what the W's can do about the rebounding disadvantage because its going to be there the whole series, but then again, how many teams can get out-rebounded by nearly 20 and still have a shot to win the game in the final 20 seconds. If they can cut down on the turnovers, play Harrington a bit more and hope to get a few more boards, and they can win game 2.

Also, Utah can "hang" for one game, but can they hang for 7? They started to look tired in the 2nd half, so we'll see.

Left hand, right hand, it doesn't matter. I'm amphibious.

Damn, the Jazz would have killed the Mavs also!

In general...
it seems that the jazz are kinda biters.

that fan with the we believe too sign and curtis borchardt (i think) with a matt barnes mohawk are the best example i can think of right now.

that was a tough game but if the dubs can find a way to rebound, which i think don nelson can do, they can pull out game 2

One more...PROPS to Harrington tonight!!!!
Good to see him bust out with his best game of the playoffs!

refs
i actually thought the game was officiated pretty fairly.  There were some non-calls and bs calls both ways.  The only blatant miss was the clear path basket that should've counted.  We lost this game on the glass and maybe some uncharacteristic misses from the line by Jack.

I still think a close loss is better than a blowout cause it shows the guys they can hang with Utah and their physical style of play.  I also think it makes them a little angry knowing they had a chance to steal one and pretty much blew it.

While Utah was able to play our style and win, they needed great games from every key player (including 12 excellent mins from Dee Brown) to do it.  Monta is STILL MIA, Pietrus reverted to the MP from the beginning of the Dallas series, Jack was way off and Biedrins was largely ineffective in his 20 mins.

I'm disappointed with the loss, but encouraged by the overall effort.  Obviously, it's vital that we steal Game 2 and i think we will.  W's in 6.

agreed
i wish fans in this site would stop whining about the refs. give credit where credit is due, and know that Don Nelson will be able to figure out this Jazz team in game 2 or game 5.

Don Nelson will be able to figure out this Jazz
" team in game 2 or game 5"

Obviously he dint watch the Rockets lose game 7 cause he let the Jazz off the hook tonight the same way Houston did in game 7!  We had them on the ropes then stopoped attacking the rim and shot bricks instead. See what Deron Williams did at the end? That's what we shoulda done 5 minutes before. Damn!!

by Skeptic con Urquell on May 7, 2007 11:45 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

a close loss is better than a blowout
Not really. A blow out wastes less energy so you are better next game than you are after a close loss.
The depressing thing about this game is we put a lot of effort into it and had it won then just gave it away.

mental aspect
i get what you're saying with the physical exertion of a close game.  But i think it's better for the team MENTALLY to be in it rather than getting blown out.  During the regular season, i don't think getting blown out matters cause you move on to the next game and the next team.  In the playoffs though, i think a lot hinges on confidence.  Getting blown out in Game 1 on the road when you're still the underdog, i think would have a negative effect on the players/team's confidence.  Plus, it's not like they play back-to-back games in the playoffs, so i don't think those extra mins played make a difference for the next game.

one more thing
Utah fans ain't got nothing on us.  Hostile environment my butt!  A tight game like that and they weren't even remotely loud.  They didn't even get the DE-FENSE chant going until the final minutes.  What a joke to even mention that arena in the same breath as Oracle!!!  We'll show em how it's done this Friday and Sunday!  WE BELIEVE!!!

Great game!
I don't know, I think this could be a very intense series.  It's so hard to know how each team should be feeling at this point.  The most important thing is that Utah got the win.  But Golden State made them show some fear at home and they played a terrible offensive game.

That half-court Baron post-up or just stand there like Patrick Ewing is killing us!  No movement away from the ball, terrible passes.  We need to distribute the rock and make more transition plays.  Props to Utah defense, but we can be scoring more on them.

I love Barnes, but man he can break your heart with some spastic errors.

But we're in this. This is a great series!  Can you imagine how boring a Houston-Dallas game would have been?  I have respect for Utah, but I am hoping this is where Golden State shows some serious heart and character.  I'm psyched for Harrington.  If he keeps showing up, Utah should be worried.

no complaints here...
on the road...8th seed...close in the end.  Going in, we knew Boozer will grab 3,857 rebounds each game.  We had a chance to steal it but hey....

Not to second guess but...I wouldve loved if Jrich shot that 3 instead of Jax...But hey, Nellie makes the calls...

It's not gonna be easy folks....

Adjustments

  • Put a body on Boozer (easier said than done)If it takes 1 - 2 people do it.  Gotta find him on the glass.
  • Attack Kirilenko (throw your body into him, instead of laying it softly.)
  • We need a better start to the game.  It seems to me we were playing catch up the whole game even if we were leading.  It just felt so strange.
I'm not too upset tonight which is strange too...Anyone else has this feeling?

by VonteegoCummings on May 7, 2007 11:19 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah
For me it's because I feel like Utah earned it.  The Warriors could have pulled it out, but it doesn't feel like they blew it.

Nellie needs to trust his bench more
First of all, he's got to play Monta Ellis more, especially in game 1.  The more he doesn't play Monta, the more Monta will become a head case.  He is wearing out Barnes, Jack, Baron, and Rich.  Harrington came to play tonight, but only got 27 minutes.  Monta got 5 minutes.

Second of all, they got killed on the boards tonight, and there is no easy fix for this.  Play Biedrins more?  Pietrus has to give them rebounds as well.  Jack only had 1 board.  Final tally:  54-36 Utah.  There's the game.

by dmpizzle on May 7, 2007 11:31 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Boards
I felt like Utah got a lot of those offensive boards just because they had bodies looking for them.  When the Warriors put up a three, four guys are running back on D before it clangs.

by achiappanza on May 7, 2007 11:36 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Al
I thought Al's playing time was weird tonight.  He sat for a good stretch of the 3rd and i really thought they should've come back with him right away since he was hot and he was also hustling on D.  I thought maybe for rebounding purposes they kept him out in favor of Andris, but he had 5 and Al had 3, so that was pretty much a wash.  Then in the 4th quarter he picked up foul #4 with like 6 mins to go and Nellie yanked him.  I thought maybe it was for rest, but if so, he sat too long in my opinion.  I don't think he got back in the game until there was a minute left.  Very odd.

by dirrty on May 7, 2007 11:38 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

in the end...
they were a three pointer away from stealing it, so no worries. i do think they played more recklessly than i've seen in a bit, exemplified by barnes' err leading the break next to baron. they'll get back on program and steal a game on wednesday.
-
can powell play shutdown on boozer?
can monta unbury himself?

by justin on May 7, 2007 11:40 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Yep...
Jax had a great look there at the end, but it just didn't go.  If he had hit it, that likely would have been the game right there.  No, the W's played well enough to win it.  It was just unfortunate that we don't have enough size to grab a few more boards.
