Playoff Open Thread-Game 1#: Warriors @ Jazz - This is Why I'm HOT!
Warriors: 0-0 (4-2 for the playoffs)
Jazz: 0-0 (4-3 for the playoffs)
Time: 7:30 PST
TV: TNT
Radio: KNBR 1050

Forget about Snoop, let's get Mims at the game to tell everyone why we're hot!
The Warriors just matched up well with Dallas. The Warriors are just hot right now. Dallas was just depressed.
The excuses for the Warriors beatdown of the Mavs keep coming despite all the convincing victories at home and away from the Oracle. The only time I've seen so much hype and excuses was for former Warrior, Mike Dunleavy Jr.! I mean, think about the discourse prior the playoffs... Dallas the #1 seed and most everyone (those being sports analysts) was convinced that their powerhouse deserved all the accolades: Avery for "Coach of the Year," Nowitski for "Most Valuable Player," and Harris or Stackhouse for "6th man of the year." With all these accolades that none of them received (yet), the best excuse that they -- from some analysts and many (Mavs) fans -- could come up with is "the Mavs just got down on themselves." Come on now... really?
It's time for the Warriors to prove the world wrong, again! Heck, we already shocked Commissioner David Stern.
The Warriors head out to Utah tonight against a young, upstart defensive and also offensively minded team. This team was on fire early on this season only to drop 6 of their 7 last seven along with a 4 game losing streak in March, which led Andrei Kirilenko to grumble over his playing time and worth on the team. However, as a lot of us have been watching in the post-season, Carlos Boozer finally looks like he's becoming the superstar everyone thought he could be after signing with Utah, scoring at will over Yao Ming. His 2-game with Deron Williams during the series is eerily reminscent of hot-pants John Stockton and all-elbows and knees Karl Malone. Our main man Tim K. tells us not to forget about Harpring and Okur, either. The Jazz have been so good in the playoffs that they even made Tracy McGrady cry.
Utah, like the Warriors, are nearly unbeatable at home, winning 31 of 42 games; two of those were against the Warriors.
The Warriors can definitely hang with the Jazz, if our blowout of them at home is any indication. The Warriors are finally becoming the shooting team that they long thought they were/are, even though many of us hope they would take it to the hole more. Jax's shooting has been able to stretch out defenses and also give us a consistent deep threat. Both Jax and also Barnes have finally given us the athleticism, heart, handles, and defensive at the 3 spot that we've needed since probably the Chris Mullin era (1st time around). Anyone ever notice how Barnes is always muggin in the background of photos?
Although, Utah might own us during the season series, we have -- historically -- owned them in the playoffs! We swept them back in 1989 in the first round of the playoffs and also 3-2 back in 1987. If history is an indication.... then the Warriors will continue to be "unstoppable baby!"
Vegas odds: Utah by 4 (as of 9:29 am pst)
Predictions:
* Warriors by 5
* Jax stays hot and hits three 3-pointers
* TMNHarrington bodies up Boozer and contains him to 21 quiet points
* JRich starts off a little cold, but gets "hot", dropping 14-6-5.
* I think we can expect a Barnes facial on Okur tonight
Make sure to give us your predictions in the comments before tip off and post any comments you have during the game right here.

Warriors in 6
Summary: Warriors win 4-2
I see this series playing out very similarly to the last, despite the fact that the Jazz present a very difficult matchup problem in the form of Carlos Boozer. The Warriors simply have no answer for him and, as much as I LOVE Al Harrington and Matt Barnes, we simply must address the need for a bruising PF in the offseason in order to handle the Duncan, Boozer, Stoudemire, Nene type players we will continue to see in the Western Conference playoffs for the next several years (yeah, I said it, Warriors in the playoff for the next several years!). That said, Monta is WAY too quick for Fish and while Deron is potentially a young Baron, Baron is the MAN right now and Deron is NOT going to be able to contain him forever. The key to the whole series is Stephen Jackson who will be an absolute BEAST and will average 26-7-7. In the end, the Jazz will have no containment for Jack (either inside or out) and the penetration and kick for open 3's will ultimately bury the Jazz.
Game 1: Warriors 106, Jazz 98
The Jazz try to be physical and the first half is a fairly low scoring affair. In the second half the Warriors force the pace and share the ball. Williams gets caught up in the frenzy of the Warriors and Jerry Sloan gets a technical in the 3rd as the fouls pile up due to GSW early offense and Baron's continued forays into the lane. Boozer goes for 30.
Game 2: Jazz 91, Warriors 86
Utah plays punishing defense. AK-47 comes alive as he realizes that he is the only Jazz player able to disrupt the Warriors offense the way that the Warriors disrupt everyone else. His long arms in the lanes prevent the Warriors from running as much and his help defense on the interior proves too problematic for the Warriors to overcome in a must win for Utah. BTW, this game plants the seeds in Mully's head for a sign-and-trade deal this summer of Pietrus (with a new $7-8 million annual contract), Jasikevicius and POB for Kirilenko. This trade creates the Warriors lineup that wins the NBA title in 2008.
Game 3: Warriors 122, Jazz 98
Blow out. The crowd is hyped, the team is psyched, and the track shoes are in full effect as the Warriors run the Jazz out of the Oracle Arena in convincing fashion. Barnes goes berzerk from behind the line and Monta scores 25+, mainly on wicked crazy and-1's in the lane.
Game 4: Warriors 112, Jazz 106
A closer game as Sloan makes some adjustments, but the Warriors are just too hot in their own building and the fans continue to make life miserable for a team that relies on communication in the half-court set. This is Baron's signature game of the series as he really gets his body feeling right again and simply abuses Deron Williams all night long.
Game 5: Jazz 104, Warriors 101 (OT)
This is the last gasp for Utah. The pace of the game is in their favor as regulation ends tied at 93. Unfortunately, the Jazz have been pounding the ball inside all night and Biedrins and Harrington both foul out. In the extra period Boozer takes over scoring 9 of the Jazz 11 points including the layup and the foul (by Matt Barnes who is simply overmatched by Boozer's power in the post) that put the Jazz over the edge. Boozer again goes for 30+.
Game 6: Warriors 124, Jazz 109
Utah is completely spent. After fighting, scratching, clawing, biting, spitting and generally willing themselves to the win to stave off elimination in Game 5, the Jazz have nothing left in the tank. The Warriors run and then run and then run some more. Deron Williams finds himself alone on the break over and over again and while he puts up a valiant effort (registering a triple-double in the defeat) the Warriors, and specifically JRich who has 36 and is just unconscious from outside while throwing down not one but two of the sickest dunks ever seen in the playoffs, simply run away with this one to close out the series.

BOOZER
That's because he's CARLOS BOOGER!
I can't help but think that the REFS did it to the WARRIORS again! JAX wasn't getting any kind of love!
So we didn't steal the first in UTAH, we still have GAME 2! Just disappointed that we were in the game until the end, just like the 2nd home game when we lost by like 2 or something.
There were times during the game I couldn't help but laugh at the JAZZ players! Sometimes I had to think hard to think why they're so good! It's definitely not because they have a clutch player! Maybe clutch rebounder! They stay in the game w/ dinky put-backs from offensive boards and a few 3's by some guy that just woke up!
Oh and BEANS still has the better DO than AK-47!
GAME 2 is ours for the taking! JAZZ fans should be scared we were in it and almost pulled it off!
"If you build around them...they will come!"
Jax keep taking it right at
Warriros lost this game on their own
blaming the refs?
it was a great game, and we knew that winning in Utah will always be tough. i think this game showed that we can definitely play with the Jazz at home and I'm confident that we will win at least one game on the road. I'm also confident that we will be able to hold serve rather easily at home with our crowd. tonight, we just couldn't make that dagger three-pointer to put the game away, shots we usually hit at home.
i thought davis got tired towards the end. maybe they DID all have the flu. by the end of the game, he couldn't hang with williams which is disappointing. i just wish that Davis would stop committing stupid-ass fouls (especially that last one, totally unnecessary, and took away his defensive intensity).
this series is a long way from over.

W's only need to win 1 in Utah
I'm not sure what the W's can do about the rebounding disadvantage because its going to be there the whole series, but then again, how many teams can get out-rebounded by nearly 20 and still have a shot to win the game in the final 20 seconds. If they can cut down on the turnovers, play Harrington a bit more and hope to get a few more boards, and they can win game 2.
Also, Utah can "hang" for one game, but can they hang for 7? They started to look tired in the 2nd half, so we'll see.

refs
I still think a close loss is better than a blowout cause it shows the guys they can hang with Utah and their physical style of play. I also think it makes them a little angry knowing they had a chance to steal one and pretty much blew it.
While Utah was able to play our style and win, they needed great games from every key player (including 12 excellent mins from Dee Brown) to do it. Monta is STILL MIA, Pietrus reverted to the MP from the beginning of the Dallas series, Jack was way off and Biedrins was largely ineffective in his 20 mins.
I'm disappointed with the loss, but encouraged by the overall effort. Obviously, it's vital that we steal Game 2 and i think we will. W's in 6.
agreed

Don Nelson will be able to figure out this Jazz
Obviously he dint watch the Rockets lose game 7 cause he let the Jazz off the hook tonight the same way Houston did in game 7! We had them on the ropes then stopoped attacking the rim and shot bricks instead. See what Deron Williams did at the end? That's what we shoulda done 5 minutes before. Damn!!
by Skeptic con Urquell on May 7, 2007 11:45 PM PDT up reply actions
a close loss is better than a blowout
The depressing thing about this game is we put a lot of effort into it and had it won then just gave it away.

mental aspect
one more thing
Great game!
That half-court Baron post-up or just stand there like Patrick Ewing is killing us! No movement away from the ball, terrible passes. We need to distribute the rock and make more transition plays. Props to Utah defense, but we can be scoring more on them.
I love Barnes, but man he can break your heart with some spastic errors.
But we're in this. This is a great series! Can you imagine how boring a Houston-Dallas game would have been? I have respect for Utah, but I am hoping this is where Golden State shows some serious heart and character. I'm psyched for Harrington. If he keeps showing up, Utah should be worried.
no complaints here...
Not to second guess but...I wouldve loved if Jrich shot that 3 instead of Jax...But hey, Nellie makes the calls...
It's not gonna be easy folks....
Adjustments
- Put a body on Boozer (easier said than done)If it takes 1 - 2 people do it. Gotta find him on the glass.
- Attack Kirilenko (throw your body into him, instead of laying it softly.)
- We need a better start to the game. It seems to me we were playing catch up the whole game even if we were leading. It just felt so strange.
by VonteegoCummings on May 7, 2007 11:19 PM PDT reply actions
Yeah
Nellie needs to trust his bench more
Second of all, they got killed on the boards tonight, and there is no easy fix for this. Play Biedrins more? Pietrus has to give them rebounds as well. Jack only had 1 board. Final tally: 54-36 Utah. There's the game.
