Playoff Recap: Game 1: Warriors 112, Jazz 116 - Within distance...

I can't think of the last time the Warriors had four players hit twenty points and NOT win.  Despite Barnes and JRich notching double doubles (20-10 and 21-10 respectively) and Harrington finally contributing on the defensive AND offensive end, pouring in 21 points on 4-7 shooting from way out, the Jazz's disciplined play proved to be a little too much for the Warriors this game.  In a battle of coaching masterminds, it was speed and athleticism versus plodding, physical half court sets.   It was a tough loss to witness, but, in my mind, the Warriors lost this one on their own.  Not to sound like the bitter Mavs fans, but the unforced errors were equally costing to anything the Jazz did.

To to the credit of the Jazz, they were, however, able to limit the Warriors' bread and butter: fast break points and points in the paint.  The Jazz were active on defense, collapsing on driving Warriors-- with active hands either poking the ball out of their hands or straight up blocking it en route to a Jazz fastbreak.  Jax and JRich especially seemed prone to getting picked.  At one point, Jax was in the triple threat position in front of Boozer and Boozer just took it out of his hands, leaving Jax confused and complaining to the refs as the Jazz headed down the other way!  I was hoping for a JRich Rookie-Sophmore game move, with Jax bouncing it off Boozer's head, but alas... not tonight,

The Jazz also owned the Warriors in the rebounding department.  Boozer (20 rbs) and Okur (11)  ALONE accounted for almost as many rebounds as the Warriors had altogether (36).  The Warriors swarming defense on driving Jazz players led to some impressive blocks, but for someone reason the ball always managed to fall back into the hands of a Jazz player, leading to easy put backs.  As cliche as it may sound, the ball simply didn't bounce the Warriors way.

But as disappointing of a loss as it might seem, the Warriors hung tight almost the whole game and probably were in command for most of the second half though I wouldn't necessarily say that they controlled the tempo to the way they would prefer.  Barnes continued to drain some threes, dropping some pretty touch passes to a cutting Biedrins or open man in the corner.  But didn't it kill you to see him lazily drop a pass to an unexpecting Davis with Deron Williams standing right there?  Jax had some nice drives to the hoop, knifing through 2-3 Jazz defenders.  But didn't it drive you nuts that every other time he handled the rock, some Jazz player just took it out of his hands?  Our leader Davis owned the Jazz in the first half and for parts of the second, but why did he revert to pounding the ball and taking long jumpers in the 4th quarter?  Was he hesitant on driving on the Euro towers?  Was it because he was hamstrung?  JRich hit some nice shots, but wasn't it prettier seeing him taking it strong later on in the second half?  The enigma that seems to be Warriors basketball-- something I may never understand-- is how they are equal parts dazzling and sloppy/short sighted.  The contradictions of the great defense and errant shooting or turnovers by dribbling it off their own foot (we've seen time and time again last series and today) seemed to keep the Jazz in the game long enough to mount their run in the last few minutes.

It's apparent that the Warriors can run (or not run actually) with the Jazz and even match up with them physically!  Funny, the Warriors ability to go head to head or toe to toe with the Jazz makes me think the Mavs are WAY softer than I once thought.  Hopefully, the Warriors will be more prepared for the next game and hopefully learn from what seem like easily fixable errors.

TMNHarrington.  The guy came in a jumpstarted the Warriors in the first quarter then went on another tear in the second half keeping the Warriors close both times.  Although little shows up in the box score besides all his points, he played some tough defense against Boozer, getting a couple key blocks along the way.  Other Warriors are also definitely deserving, but I thought it might be nice to give it up to the guy after his first series struggles.  Here's to you, Harrington!

i wish that
nellie had played harrington earlier in the 3rd or 4th. maybe he could've continued his hot shooting.

Nah
Guys like Harrington are strictly 1st quarter shooters.  They'll go 10/10 from 3 pt land in the beginning of the game then miss layups in crunch time.  It's ok, we need jump starts like that.  But I don't want him near the rock in the 4th quarter.  Leave that to the adults.

i was not looking forward to the jazz
for this very reason. it's gonna be impossible to keep them off of the glass. i agree with you about the unforced mistakes. those were so frustrating to watch. we were still in the game so that is probably a good sign. hopefully we can cut down on the mental mistakes in the next game.

yeah
if the warriors...
  1. defensive rebound
  2. take care of the ball
the warriors had this game but lost, which is heartbreaking, but at the very least they know they can win in utah.

Just 26 minutes?
It was great to see Harrington back in the groove, but why couldn't he get more than 26 minutes (12 in the 2nd half)?

As long as the W's steal Wednesday's game, we're still in good shape ...

Solace in close loss
The best basketball of the playoffs is right here.  We are pushing the Jazz to play their best to beat us.  Yes, mistakes were made, but they were compensated for by the bodies flying.  We had tons of open dunks in the 2nd half as they were overplaying the perimeter and not helping.  Nellie will find a way to exploit this for the rest of the series.  We didn't have the close-out tonight.  We let TMNT take the big shot.  Not, a decision we could have ever imagined in the first round. But, now we're in a series.  We can win a 7th game in Utah.  Jax needs to keep on driving and force the zebras to give him the calls he deserves.

We've tasted this loss and took their best shot.  Now, let's crank it up a notch and go back home with the home court advantage.  If you can take away some positive in a Game 1 loss, how much better can Williams, Browne, Kirilinko and Okur play?

w's played tough
jax needs to keep his mouth shut instead of crying all game about the calls. if a ref is not whistling for you, he is not going to suddenly have a change of heart just because you bitch and moan loud enough. play b-ball and stop whining.

the warriors had a chance at the end, but not quite a big enough lead. too many turnovers and probably too much bitching about calls.

w's in 6

Jax wasn't really getting
fouled either.  AK must have blocked him 5 times in that game but he keep throwing it up there.  Jackson isn't to explosive but he has to take it into AK

W's will get the next one...
The Warriors gave it their all, and you can't complain about that. They HAVE to get their offensive boards and work on their free throws. Other than that, they played an excellent game. I think they'll steal game 2 by more than 5 points (but fewer than 15.)

The worst thing about last night was Dick Stockton! God, an we please get someone else to call our games?  During the 1st round, I was just giddy to see the Dubs in the playoffs, so I didn't care, but last night was just painful...Oh well, at least I didn't hear Reggie say "Petrious," I guess in a sentence, you'd say 'starting Barnes is a very petrious decision by coach Nelson.' LOL

analysis is dead on
the W's don't need to change much for game 2, but they need to take care of the ball much better. The Jazz can't play the W's tempo for a whole series. Their big guys will wear down.

love Jax guts, love Jax heart, scared crapless...
...of Jax making dribble moves with anyone with on him, more than 12' from the basket.  It's the only consistent instance of him not quite grasping his limitations.  and you see it coming too.  just a couple of those strips get replaced by an early pass to someone in better position to make a play, and we're golden.

...go DUBS!

How about getting blocked
5 times by AK?

I mean him not knowing his limitations I guess is his strenght and his curse but damn man.  Either take it into his body or stop trying to shot floating layups over him

utah
its funny how you guys still keep bringing up the last round while you're about to get swept by utah. real championship teams don't care about the last round. they look ahead to the ring. congrats one year warrior wonders.

a 4 point last minute win at home brings...
...that kind of confidence for you guys?  i think we're all a little weary of your credentials to talk about "real championship teams."  you mean all those ones you had with Stockton and Malone?  wait, no, my bad.

crowbar...
is a Mavs fan (I believe) that was trolling around on here after we wiped the floor with his team.  He's just pissed that the Sauerkraut couldn't finish stronger and now feels the need to troll some more since the Dubs were the responsible party to end the Mavs season.  Here's his original post after the end of game 6:

#congrats

way to go warriors on making it to the 2nd round. you are now average. i'll laugh in 2 years when jackson murders someone and drunken nellie quits on you too.#

That just reeks of a poor, spiteful Mavs fan.

good game
i'll take that Jax 3 all night...if it goes in it's whole different ballgame. I'll live with that. Hopefully they can steal game 2 but it's VERY tough to win in Utah, just like it's VERY tough to win in Oakland for an opponent. Boozers boards and Okur's 3's were the differnce IMO.

Let's Go Oakland! Gas, Brake, Dip.

One loss, but Warriors can do this!
I agree with everyone. Better defensive rebounding, less unforced errors and we are all good. If you think about the Warriors didn't even shoot well from the outside and were still in the game until the final 10 seconds. If they come out tomorrow focused it's their game to lose.

still feeling good about the series
remember, it isn't time to worry until the Warriors lose one at home. Utah is simply doing what they are supposed to do: defend home court.

Jazz and Warriors
You know I have read and heard a lot from everyone and I just have to say.  I think personally this series is going to be one of the best in the Playoffs this year.  I was actually excited to see the Warriors beat the crap out of Dallas.  Mostly because I hate Dallas, but I am a huge Jazz fan.  And that game lastnight was very enjoyable to watch.  I hear alot about how the Jazz can't keep up with the Warriors.  Personally I have watched the Jazz throughout the years.  And if one thing Sloan does is keep his guys in shape.  If he sees you slacking he sticks you on the bench.  Just ask Williams who spent a lot of last year on the bench.  This series can go either way.  But I can tell you the Jazz are not Dallas they never give up.  Which I feel will be the same for the Warriors

Just couldn't put enough good plays together
I kept waiting for that inevitable Warrior blitz I'm so used to seeing now that opens up a nice cushion, but it never really came. We flirted with said big run throughout the second half, where we'd string a couple of good possesions together at both ends of the floor, but it felt like we seemed to derail the effort with a careless play each time, busting up the budding momentum.

It's pretty sweet that I can come to expect a 3-4 minute beat-down from game to game, and that we're delivering it these days instead of receiving it. That we never saw that big push in this game was surprising, and lends credit to the Jazz for playing their butts off (Dallas folded like laundry in a lot of those games) and some blame to the Warriors for being a little sloppy, even by their frenetic standards.

good points
I'm excited that TMNT got his breakout game. He did a nice job keeping us in the game in the 1st quarter when Baron wasn't so hot. Now Monta needs to join the party. Good thing about this loss is that despite the silly turnovers, we still hung in there.

by Caught Backcourt on May 8, 2007 3:03 PM PDT reply actions

Baron
was too inconsistent.  His 2nd and 3rd quarters were enough to make his numbers look solid. But he didn't get off to a good start in the 1s and didn't finish the game well (missed 3's, didn't drive).

I think Utah will play at their same high level, no doubt.  There will be no Utah collapse or Utah Bigs getting tired.  So as it was with the Dallas series, it all comes down to how well we execute.  Get Hyphy, DUBS!!
