Playoff Open Thread - Game #2: Warriors @ Jazz - A Change in Fluidity

Warriors: 0-1 (4-3 for the playoffs)

Jazz: 1-0 (5-3 for the playoffs)

Time: 6:00 PST

TV: TNT

Radio: KNBR 680

Okay! Here we go!

I think it's safe to say, despite our loss, Game 1 was a pretty good game. Keep in mind had we won, that "pretty good" would have been promoted to "unbelievably incredible", but adjectives aside, the game was entertaining. (Damn. That was another adjective. Sorry.)

Tonight the Warriors are looking to contain the Run n' Gun Jazz (did I just say that?), slowing their tempo down and hopefully stealing home court advantage for the rest of this series. That's a good thing. I've heard we're pretty good at home.

"We're waiting..."

Throughout the Warriors playoff run, the National Press has constantly reminded the public that the Warriors have an unorthodox style of play. Yet in the end, every single one of them goes on to remind the audience that,

"...this is the style of play that got them this far and they aren't going to change it!"

Technically, this is true. This fast paced, three point shooting crew has been firing on all cylinders for quite some time and they are showing no signs of slowing down. But a championship team is not a championship team because they commit to one style of play. They are champs because they are able to subtly vary their style of play in a manner that hinders their opponent. Not to give Utah too much credit here, but I think we can all agree that what we saw in Game 1 was not traditionally how the Jazz plays. They varied up their strategy to run with us. And it worked.

What are the things that we can do for the rest of this series to stymie Utah? CLEAN THE DAMN GLASS!

Windex

I wanna be able to eat off that backboard!

In our run during the regular season, we only out-rebounded the Jazz in one game. Overall in the regular season they pulled 192 boards to our 161. I know. That's a stupid stat. But you get the point.

We cannot allow Utah to get the same level of second chance buckets that they got on us in Game 1. Yes we have an amazing fluidity in our current style, but tonight the Warriors are going to have to make a concentrated effort to gain position under the glass and be ready to clean up those missed shots.

It's not going to be easy. But then again, neither was getting here. Let's get this show on the road.

TAKE `EM TO THE GLASS DUBS!!!

Make sure to give us your predictions in the comments before tip off and post any comments you have during the game right here.

UPDATE: Warriors lose in OT 117-127.

WIN
We're gonna throw everything including the kitchen sink at Boozer.  Baron, pissed off, is gonna show Deron what-for on both ends of the court.  This game will be all out war.  Jax gets at least one T and knocks down five from downtown.  Harrington has an even better game than Monday.  Ellis' breakout game will be TONIGHT.  JRich scores 25 and nabs 10 boards.  Barnes is the unsung hero once again and keeps Boozer in check.  Warriors take it in the late 4th to win 114-111.

Yes.
If all the crap you mention happens, there's no way they're just winning by 3 points. I don't care if we're in Utah or not.

Playoffs
Being from Utah obviously I'm a huge Jazz fan.  But I do find enjoyment in reading the sites and newspapers from the other teams.  I will tell you there is a different between Warriors fans and Houston fans.  Infact I would say both Utah and the Warriors have one of the best.  Nothing like going to a game and unable to hear anything but screaming.  I think this is going to be one of the best series in the playoffs.  Both teams have strength the others dont.  I feel tonights game will be another close one.  They both have areas they want to improve in and I think what will make the difference.  Is finding out what the other team has planned and beating them at it.  Dont think this one will be as high of a scoring game.  But I look for Boozer to have a really good game.  To try and take him out of the shot and off the boards you cant do both.  And if you mix it up your just going to confuse yourself.  Do one or the other otherwise neither one I feel will work.  Go Jazz

game strategy
the W's don't need to tinker too much in their strategy. They very well could have won game 1, but for their mishandling the ball on too many ocassions. They also came out tentative and the Jazz took advantage early, which forced the W's to expend energy playing catch up. That won't happen tonight.

The W's have a distinct disadvantage on the boards, but if they can just narrow the gap, particularly on the defensive side they can win this game.

Despite what happened in Game 1, the Jazz don't want to run for 7 games. The W's need to make them.

Left hand, right hand, it doesn't matter. I'm amphibious.

RECOVERY
HEY B-Diddy, Barnes and the rest of that locker room did all that on Monday with chest colds. I think today they will be feeling much betta.. and are going to try and push the pace even harder. I don't think any team is athlethic enough to change their game to the Nellie style and keep up with us... Dallas proved that.
Aside for that just bust out the windex and push Booze around and GS will take away home court. I think they will take this one running away.

Motivation
The key factor for the Warriors is motivation.  Both teams are evenly matched but Utah simply wanted game 1 more.  You could argue that Jax and Barnes were busting their asses but we were missing that spark from our leader, Baron Davis. We need Baron to play some D and not let D Williams get around him.  Although the stats shows that he played 39 minutes and was the leading scorer on the team, he really only played the second quarter and wow did he dominate.  I think he just wanted to keep the game close and let the team handle the rest.  Rest up Baron! We can't afford to have him under the weather.  Baron is the leader of the team not Jax.  Jax needs to stop complaining about calls, get back on defense and accept the fact that the refs don't like you!

Tonight will be different.  Warriors will win! Baron Davis will not let the Warriors go down or let the press praise Deron Williams for his work against him .  We lost Game 1 because we were complacent.  What other team celebrates a first round victory like the warriors did?  The celebrations are well justified but we must not do that again after being slapped around in the first quarter.

Tonight will be a quiet night in Utah.
Let's hope Baron took the flu shot this year!

Quiet in utah
Regardless if the Jazz are winning or behind I have never seen the crowed quiet.  And one thing this Jazz team does is never give up.  I have seen them come from behind throughout the whole year.  I understand this is a GS website and thus going to be in favor of GS.  I have heard alot about how the Jazz gave everything and the GS wasn't playing at 100%.  I can tell you from what I have seen the Jazz could of done a lot better in a few areas themselves.  I will say that if the warriors who live by the 3 pointer.  If they have an on game its almost impossible to beat them.  But I can tell you that if the Jazz as a team are in sync and working together.  They too can be unstoppable to beat.  I think both teams are confident they can beat the other.  And it just might come down to another last second shot by someone to win the game.

108-97 Warriors
The Dubs come out shooting off the hook in the first quarter, while Utah gets a little flustered: 32-23 after one.  Utah refocuses in the second quarter, slows the tempo, and cuts the lead to 53-49 at the half.  Dubs explode in the 3rd, with Baron going for 14 with two big threes: 84-71.  The 4th quarter grinds down to a much slower, half-court pace; but the Jazz are unable to make any serious dent in the lead.

I look for the Warriors to continue their fronting defense on Boozer, allowing him rebounds but not points.  I think this will help us stay out of foul trouble against him.  He'll get his 15 boards: the key will be limiting Okur's impact on the glass, and chasing down long rebounds.  Also, I'd like to see Harrington in the game more, to force Boozer to guard him out of the paint, allowing us more chances to clean the offensive glass.  Harrington isn't really a factor on the boaards anyway, so the best he can do is try to get Utah's big men out of position on the offensive side.

Run into kirilenko instead of beside him, draw the fouls! They better monitor the TV and listen to Reggie!

Dubs need to move the ball on offense
We cannot have any more consecutive possessions where Baron tries to back down Williams and ends up settling for a 3-point turnaround.  If it's not working, we need to move the ball around the half-court and move off the ball.  Hopefully, our transition game will be better tonight (especially the transition D; blame it on the flu?) and we won't be running so many half-court sets.  Let's step it up, Dubs!!

WE BELIEVE!

In our April win against them
we did just that, and dropped 126pts on 'em.  That is NOT just a coincidence...

In March, the jazz beat us by only 4 despite a marked edge in rebounding.  Sound familiar?

A win on the glass = 20 point massacre

by GameSix on May 9, 2007 1:53 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Key to the game...
in my opinion, is how Baron's knee and hamstring are feeling.  His lateral movement looked bad in Game 1.  He had trouble sliding on defense and he never really even tried to attack off of the dribble.  When he's right, he controls the game and is basically unstoppable.  That, along with hot shooting, is what allowed us to beat Dallas.

We can focus more on trying to stop Williams as a team, but that could end up costing us even more on the glass.  Either Baron has to contain him better or someone else does.  Baron is a great defender so he definitely has it in him, but if the knee is sore, I'd matchup Jax or Pietrus on him.

not a must win
but it would definitely be nice to get it tonight to take a little pressure off going back to oakland. we need to play the same type of game we did on monday but cut way back on the mental mistakes.

analysis, comments and truehoops link
thumbnail analysis:
BD healthy = Dubs win; no doubt about it.
Fish plays = Monta busts out.
Fewer turnovers = Dubs win.
That's it; even if we get outrebounded by 10-12 boards.  Had  chance to win last time wtih a lot of TOs and -20 boards.

Dubs by 7 tonight and Utah will be grippin' about coming to a hostile Oracle!

Here are some comments from truehoops, including mine (OriginalDon):

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-24-43/Warrior-Fans--Undaunted.html

Why would Dubs fans be daunted? Really. I've been a Dubs fan since they were the SF Warriors (yeah, no typo), and I love to watch this team play so much that I'm hoping it goes 6-7 games before the Dubs win. If Boom Dizzle is healthy, Dubs win in 6, even though the Jazz are very good and much bigger.

Here's the thing: the Dubs make mistakes, like any other team, but they just keep playing. Hard.

The Dubs are volatile, fragile, hostile, agile...use whatever adjective you want, but the Dubs are the most evocative team the NBA has seen in years. If you love hoops, you absolutely must watch them play - win or lose.

Nellie has to go a little bigger.  You can't win if you can't grab defensive rebounds.  You also can't win if you can't defend the paint.  Warriors can neither against this Jazz lineup.

Halftime #'s
OK, so we all know that the Dubs are being out-rebounded.  30 to 13 to be exact.

But the assists going in favor of the Jazz 16 to 6?  Does this mean anything other than the fact that the Dubs are creating their own shots off the dribble?

I just like to see the numbers, in all respects, a little closer.

zero dubs ball movement
quite frankly we're lucky to be down just 5 the way we've played. we still have a good shot to win the game if we start moving the ball around a bit more and focus more on grabbing the board rather than leaking out for fast breaks

by AJC3317 on May 9, 2007 7:22 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

they have to figure out how
to keep the Utah players from getting such low postion.  Utah has a crazy amount of points in the paint and they aren't even fast breaking

If they can't stop that the only way they are going to win is by going on one of those crazy 3 pointer runs they do

He'd at least take up some space in the paint.  At this point, it's the smaller Warriors driving it in (a good thing), but they're taking it into big trees in the paint.  We need some guys to be in the paint as well instead of letting their bigs live comfortably in there.

acting as if Derek Fisher was Willis Reed or something... standing ovations and the whole nine yards. And Derek Fisher does what... exactly? As soon as Derek Fisher comes into the game the Warriors go on a run to cut the lead to 1 pt by the end of the 3rd. Don't get me wrong, Derek Fisher can definately shoot the 3... but he isn't a savior by any means. Utah is better off having AK47 run the point, at least Andrei has vision. Derek can't run the point, thats why GS got rid of him. Stupid Jazz fans.

Sloan teams have always...
had good shooters and a strong inside game.  It's not surprising.

We just need to make sure we keep up constant pressure on all of their guys inside and out.  Don't let those no calls slow us from keeping up the defense on the way back.

You can see that Monta's now playing mind games with himself....I'd play Kelenna if necessary as he is also athletic and fast.  Ellis comes back only if Nellie gives him a pep talk or if he just sucks it up and forget about the past and games on....

Geez
This is crazy how hard we have to go to the rack in order to get a call. We're down, but absolutely not out. They look like they've got their heads on (sorry, Monta), so we'll be in it til the end. Smart D and smart passes and we're golden.

Jacksons stats are horrible. hopefully he can get his game back at home. he got to concentrate more on basketball then complaining. Everytime i see him complain , the other team usually makes a shot cause jackson walks. ridiculous. hopefully  we can steal this win.

REBOUNDS!
FREE THROWS!!
it's a wonder that we were actually in these past two games. we get out rebounded by 100 boards a game. the team must feel like shit. if BD made that free throw..
If we can take away anything from this game, or these past two games rather, is that we stayed tough throughout the whole game and gave ourselves a chance. BD is such a beast, but i think this game he tried to do too much. Look, it's still a series. we gotta win the next two, and try to take game 5. if it goes to seven games, it's gonna be really difficult to win. But still, the warriors fought hard. and we gotta help them out. keep believing. I heard so many bandwagon warrior fans at my school start to doubt the warriors today. it pissed me off so much. 70% on freethrows on the road? You're not going to win.

They better be running sprints at practice and shooting 300 free throws each. Hell even Andris made his FT's in crunch time.

I said from the beggining Pietrus is the dumbest player in the nba. I cant wait till he's gone.

Every comment by announcers about Pietrus is that he needs to make smarter decisions.

They had the game in their hands and they choked. I blame Nelson for leaving Pietrus on the floor. The ball was bouncing Utahs way the entire game off the glass and that one rebound had to go towards Pietrus. I knew it was over from there.

Although
I know anything could happen with time left on the clock, but I am going to blame this whole thing on Pietrus.  I mean, come on, with seconds left on the clock and up by 3, you have to make at least 1 free throw to put them away.  Free throws are supposed to be free, and he misses 2 of the most important ones.  He's ruining his value in the off season and the Warriors at the same damn time.

Nellies rotation length
I'm still harping on it, but Sloan seems to put in guys who haven't played at all and Nellie seems so reluctant. I think one of the reasons the warriors seem to miss FTs is the heavy minutes these guys play. Couldn't we have used Kelena or Powell for a little bit. Pietrus sucks!

you need to get that negative shit out of here man. Who are you to say they didn't play with heart. The jazz frontline is so much stronger than ours, so we rely on everyone to rebound. Do you know how much energy that can take away from the guards if they have to bang with Boozer and them? don't blame it on the lack of heart. blame it on the ft's. because if MP and BD made both their free throws, nobody would be talkin about fuckin heart. making FT's doesn't take heart, it takes confidence. they put in as much effort as we could ask for.

all bitterness aside...
no matter how this series plays out, our season has been a success.  We barely made the playoffs.  Then we beat down the supposed top team in L to get to 2nd Round when no one (outside the bay area) thought we'd get out of Round 1.  This team has made wearing a W's jersey something to be proud of, not just in Northern Cali.

There's a reason we were all rooting for Houston to win that Game 7.  Can't say our guys haven't played hard, Utah is just a better team.  We can harp on the rebounding, but we knew going in we wouldn't win that battle.  I'm not saying it didn't look ridiculous in the first half especially, but the bottom line is that we're small.  There's no way around it.  And i'm not about to start calling into question the heart of our guys.  Fouls or not, they are getting POUNDED out there by that Utah's bigs.  Yet we still had a chance to win both these games on the road.  I'd take that over getting mauled the way Chicago is.

Of course, there's no excuse for the missed ft's.  The solution for that is more sketchy since it's a teamwide problem.

Anyhow, our boys are coming home.  Let's give em all we got on Friday and Sunday!  Can't forget that Utah came back from down 0-2 to get here!  WE BELIEVE!

Fundamentals...

warriors lack basic  fundamentals free throws, rebounding, defense even on offense you can probably say.  Warriors have more trouble against fundamentally sound teams. spurs and utah, they are just too disciplined in their systems.

by Kleenex on May 9, 2007 9:23 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

are you trying to say if they had
fundamentals they could be doing better on defense and the boards!

Not sure if you noticed but they have no choice but to play a zone.  The Jazz are way way bigger at just about every spot

by Zig on May 9, 2007 9:26 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

yes
can they be doing any worse?
A lot of the time warriors play the ball on rebounds instead of playing their man.  on defense how many times have you seen j-rich or anyone of the warriors defenders just reach instead of moving their feet. Are you saying if the warriors were more fundamentally sound it wouldn't help? weren't the mavericks a lot bigger then the warriors?

by Kleenex on May 9, 2007 9:41 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

As bad as they've played in the last two games..
Dubs could have won either games.  They're not a really good road team and its kind of encouraging to see that they atleast give themselves a chance to win it at the end of games on the road.  Yeah its still two tough losses on the road, but they're coming back to play at Oracle for the next two games.  I believe they'll play better at home and possibly win the next two to tie the series.  The series is far from over.

by nautica on May 9, 2007 9:25 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

wow
seriously. yeah we have a rebounding problem. but let's face it. Jazz have better rebounders. it's not just about the effort, it's about personnel. you're asking too much for the guards to come up with rebounds over boozer, memo, and AK. plus, guards can waste a lot of energy trying to get rebounds, banging with all the big boys. rebounding is not something we can dramatically improve this series, realistically. You can hustle, but honestly, you cant hustle for 48 minutes.

by BDistheBoss on May 9, 2007 9:26 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

If they're truly
the future of the franchise, I'd sure like to see Monta and Biedrins show up. An earlier post said the Andris is just taking up space and that's exactly right. Unless a rebound comes directly to him, he just bats the ball around. Monta...I don't know what to say. I keep expecting him to light it up, but no dice. Pietrus can take Air France back to wherever he came from. He has no clue. If he's not hitting the corner 3, he's useless. He may grab a few rebounds, but he gives away points on dumb fouls. His missed FTs were disastrous. We have a tough road ahead now, but should be 2-0 instead of 0-2. Woulda, coulda, shoulda....

Arrgh!
Pietrus has to shoulder the blame for this.  Those missed freebies were intolerable.

It will be forgotten all too quickly, but props to Matt Barnes for making that long two to put the Warriors up five at the end of the 4th quarter there.  With this team, it must have been tempting to back up for a three, but he stuck with a good rhythm and took the points.  Good for him.

Two at home are must-win now.

Props to the Jazz
They played a tough game.  Gutted it out at the end there when we almost stole the game.  And took control again in OT.  They earned that win.

And props to the Jazz fans.  They love their team.  This is definitely not Dallas.  I like Utah's future.  There is some heart and toughness and character on that team.  I hope to see Utah and Golden State going at it in the first decade of the 21st century.

I love us, too, but holy crap can we not run some plays on offense? We look like Van Gundy's Knicks.  It's ugly.  It worked better this game than in game 1, but it's still ugly.  And I just can't respect the playing to the refs. Yeah, it works when you're on the road, but it's cheap.  This is not the Warriors ball that I loved during the regular season and against Dallas.

Still, we can't feel bad.  Yes, we're down 0-2, but both games were close and we made Utah work, in their house.  We need to steal one game in Utah to win the series.  It could have been game 2, but there will be other opportunities.  If Utah can stay with us in Oakland, even if they lose both, they'll probably win the series. But if we win 3 and blow them out in game 4, they could be scared.

Still, I have respect for Utah.  They are playing tough.  Great friggin' series.  Let's pull this out.

GO DUBS!!!!!

WE BELIEVE!!!!!!

Wait until you come into our house.  This is Oaktown, baby.  Straight from the West.  Oakland is the best.

You have no idea.

The Jazz...
played a great game.  They always bring it and play tough.  You can be sure there are no floppers on that team cuz Sloan was a tough defender.  I'm sure he wouldn't and doesn't condone flopping.  Hell, Stockton used to set some of the meanest picks, though some were a bit dirty.  But you gotta credit them for playing tough and hanging in there at the end.

one thing makes me sad
I miss Matt Barnes already.  Someone's paying him fat $$ this summer and i won't blame him for taking it.  Let's enjoy his hustle and heart while he's still here.  He may make silly mistakes sometimes, but he more than makes up for them on both ends of the floor.  I can't say the same for Pietrus.  His idiocy and errors cancel each other out, making him pretty much useless.  I'm sorry to say being likable and funny doesn't do anything for us on the hardwood.

great post.
i hope he sticks around. he's always in the play, always on the ball. a gamer, all guts. i hope he finds the balance between staying home and getting paid.

You didn't hear Barnes on KNBR?
Straight out said he loves this organization and wants to stay here.  Let's hope management can step up.  He makes some mistakes, but he is tough.  I love his crazy tatooed swagger.  He's all about Northern California.

by walkerp on May 9, 2007 9:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

i did
and i'd love for him to stay.  I even liked him when he played for the Kings (that's saying a lot cause i loathe them) and was very excited to have him here.  But it's a hard call if someone throws the right amount of paper at him.  If people like Cardinal and Boykins (no offense, cause i liked Earl too) got big deals from good years here, i don't see how Barnes won't also since he's clearly better than both guys and he's done it in the playoffs as well.

I STILL BELIEVE
New member to the site but i've been stuck on this site for ahwhile now. I've come here when we've completely played like sh*t and when we've won incredible games. I can't believe how people are throwing in the towel. The Jazz are the higher seed they should have and did win their games at home. I know that we choked, missed key shots and HUGE free throws, but NO WAY is this series over. We are a whole diffrent beast at home and i expect us to be tied 2-2 at the end of the weekend. DUBS just gotta keep their heads up and just look forward to friday. I STILL BELIEVE and i'm pretty sure Nellie and the Dubs still do too.

MP might have run out his string.
Indeed, I repeat the call: it's time for Kelena.
Remember: No 8 ever beat a 1.
A fool gives up on this team. They know they can win in Utah, and they know they will hold home court. We're just getting started.
**BELIEVE**

Who's
goin to the game Friday??  Time to Represent.  Not like those posers in Utah.  Let's send this back to Utah.  We ain't goin down without a damn fight!!!

by maybenextyear on May 9, 2007 9:45 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

i'll be there
and i'm so ready to show those Utah fans what homecourt is really about.  I still don't know how people are comparing those fans to us.  They're not even a factor in the game and half the time they don't even know what they're cheering/booing for.

Let's show em how we do in Oracle!!!

Utah fans
Heck, they can't even manage their own rallying schwag.  They copied the free t-shirts and just made variations on the "We believe" theme.

crazy crazy game
crazy crazy game

What an emotional game. The Dubs sure know how to rip my spirit in two, stitch it up, and then tear it out again. I'm kind of comforted that we hung in there on the road, but can we please make free throws? Please? Please? I still believe we can do this, but the 6 man rotation is starting to scare me. We need at least the ghost of regular-season-Monta to show up. Baron can't play 45+ minutes every single game. And Pietrus? He's just a liability. The other guys are pulling their weight for the most part, especially Barnes. Hopefully, the Dubs work out something to keep him.

Despite the losses, this is one hell of a series. The Jazz are a hell of a tough competitor. The Dubs are coming back to Oakland, and the fans at Oracle won't let us lose. Note to all people going on Friday: Scream until you can't scream no more. Show the Jazz what a real hostile environment is.

Well, it was nice while it lasted...
In order to win now we have to do one of two extremely unlikely things: win four in a row, or win a game 7 in Utah. As much as I love this team, that's not going to happen.

But can we all just agree not to blame this loss on Boom Dizzle for that ONE missed free throw? 36 points on 59.1% shooting, made all six of his other free throws, four of nine on 3-pointers, 7 assists, 4 steals, and played 46 minutes on a bad hamstring, bad knee, with a bad shoulder and recovering from a cold!

So let's point fingers where they belong: PIETRUS and his stupid fouls and failure to make even ONE of two with the game on the line. And to a lesser extent, Monta, who hasn't been able to shoulder even a tiny bit of the weight on BD.

Ugh
Monta is getting shown up BIG TIME by Deron Williams.

by achiappanza on May 9, 2007 10:05 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

aye, monta.
isn't getting shut down by anyone but himself. he has lost all aggressiveness. he looks to get rid of the ball before it's even come to him, and it seems like his offense has crushed his defense. his shoulders are down, his head is down. he went into the freezer game one in dallas, but dude did it to him but himself. maybe he needs to start and get into something of a flow, or nelly has to take a chance and leave him out there for five or ten minutes and see what happens, i dunno...but it's agonizing to watch. he's too good for this. he's gotta find the fire.

by justin on May 9, 2007 10:33 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Oracle we need you
Well guys, it's time to shine.  Utah fans carried the Jazz, now it's up to us.  If we lose at home then I will forever say that the Jazz fans are bettter than us. (Please don't let that happen.)
