Rumor: Jason Richardson + #18 Pick for Bucks' #6 Pick (Yi Jianlian)
The last year and a half of Troy Murphy's time with the Warriors he was in the trade rumors daily. It got to the point that we nicknamed him Troy "Trade Rumor" Murphy in our 2006-2007 Golden State Warriors preview for Dime magazine. I never thought I'd see the day, but it looks like fan favorite Jason Richardson has supplanted Murph in that uncomfortable title of Mr. Trade Rumor. This morning Gery Woelfel of the The Journal Times notes that the Bucks and Warriors could be doing business on his blog The Woelfel World of Sports:
The Warriors reportedly have more than a passing interest in moving up in the draft with the object of their affection apparently being Chinese power forward Yi Jianlian. ...
One of the rumors making the rounds is the Warriors would be willing to give the Bucks a couple of players and their top pick. One of the players would allegedly be shooting guard/small forward Jason Richardson.
As a big JRich fan I have to say I'm starting to worry about his name being in the trade rumors so often. It does seem like the Warriors are seriously shopping him around this summer. I'm all for moving up in this draft to get Yi, but not if it costs JRich or Die Flying. He is a big, big reason for this team's success down the stretch in that clutch finish to the regular season and that wildly entertaining upset over the Dallas Mavericks. Without JRich NONE of that would have happened.
The Warriors are a poor rebounding team, but one of the main reasons they were able to get away with it was having a big guard like JRich be such a force nightly on the glass. You aren't going to find many swingmen in this league that can score like JRich and rebound the rock like he does. Don't forget JR averaged nearly 7 rodmans a game in the playoffs.
Practically speaking trading Jason Richardson to Milwaukee for a higher pick in the draft would be a pretty big deal involving several current big money Buck players. The problem is the Bucks' roster isn't exactly saturated with talent or players that are as good of a fit for Nellieball as JRich. Use ESPN's Trade Machine and see what you can come up with. Aside from Michael Redd (who the Bucks will never trade) I just don't see how JRich's roughly $10+ mill a year nets anything useful in return
Another point worth paying attention to in Woelfel's post is that Yi's crew is feeling four teams:
Also, it was noted yesterday that Yi was in town for a workout with the Dubs. Yi did in fact workout for the Warriors, but Chris Mullin and Don Nelson actually went down to LA to check him out [see Warriors watch Yi: Is Golden State ready to jump into the Yi Jianlian sweepstakes? on SFGate].
Would you be unhappy if the Warriors traded Jason Richardson this offseason?
99% of rumors never happen, but 99% of them are fun to talk about!

Problem with #6 is...
I'm not opposed to trading away JRich, but I'm not sure Yi is the answer to the Dubs' questions. Indeed, he raises plenty more like:
- Is he the rare big guy that can play in Nellie's system?
- When (not if) Nellie retires, is Yi the rare big guy likely to thrive in the NBA at all?
As for JRich, I know he brings a lot of good to the team, and guy's got heart like very few athletes in the biz.
Here's the problem though:
- He's not a great defender. Never has been, never will be. If G.S. is going to get tougher, then they need lockdown perimeter guys. JRich takes away minutes from whomever those guys are going to be.
- He's at a position where talent is relatively easy to acquire. If Monta can't hack it at the point, then he's going to be slated toward the 2 spot. We got Monta at the 2nd round, and with a year's worth of seasoning, he's become, at the very least, a replacement-level player. Remember Spree? Choking incident aside, he was one of the league's best all-around 2 guards for a few years. Where'd they get him? 25 pick (I think) in the 1st round.

I believe you're referring to JRich as being a suspect one-on-one defender. I'll give you that. But, his help defense is solid, and his rebounding is tops among 2 guards. What this means is, even though he lacks in other departments, he does not quit. And we all know rebounding is one of the biggest weaknesses this team has. Most of us are aware that there's really no such thing as loyalty in professional sports but making JRich a Warrior for life would be a thing of beauty!

Gotta be someone coming in return
How bout Villanueva? Not known for hustlin' in practice, but some upside as a PF. Could Baron and Nellie get him to live up to potential?
Gadzuric? Horrendous from the charity stripe, but who isn't on our wonderful Dubs.

you know who I blame for all the jrich trade talk
so i guess the blame falls back on mullin for giving foyle that dumb-ass extension. but still, foyle is just a waste.
i don't want yi if it means losing jrich. that deal isn't worth it, straight up.
the crowning achievement of ira newble's illustrious career
Interesting point

Well
At least Foyle is a good citizen and uses that money to help the poor and needy in his country! Foyle is a very respectable person, so no need to hate him.
It wasnt his fault.
you cant blame Foyle.
And Nellie's fault for not playing Foyle enough to maintain any trade value he might have once had.

This makes little sense
- Take Conley at #6. Sign Gerald Wallace or another free agent small forward.
- Take Corey Brewer (a true SF, unlike Richardson, and already better defensively) and re-sign Maurice Williams.
Richardson's a scoring guard, while they need a defensive stopper at the 3. Villanueva and Bogut don't play much D, so their small forward has to be able to block some shots and guard perimeter scorers. That's why a guy like Gerald Wallace (FA) or Brewer makes so much more sense.
A sign-and-trade involving Pietrus makes a little more sense, plus we could give them a backup PG in Sarunas, a project big in POB, and the #18; all we'd take back in return is Brian Skinner's expiring contract and get the #6. That's still off value-wise unless they really love Pietrus.
I dunno, the Bucks seem like a poor matchup unless we're talking about sending Monta Ellis to be their PG.

Beat me to it OZ
There's no chance
As a side note, what a nice team that'd be:
PG: Conley/Mo Williams/Boykins
SG: Redd/Lewis
SF: Rashard Lewis/Simmons
PF: Villanueva/Patterson
C: Bogut/Gadzuric
That's pretty solid, folks: great offensive team, couple of defensive specialists, 3-pointers galore. Definitely could make a splash in the Least.
Bucks Trade
There's a good chance Yi will be gone at 5.
I don't believe any deal will be made until the first 5 picks have been made and Yi is still on the board. There's no sense in moving up to # 6 to select Yi and then he's taken one spot ahead of us.
Another thing to take into consideration is will Jason Richardson ever return to the player he was before the knee injury? What made Richardson special was his ability to create in the lane and without his leaping ability he doesn't possess the same talent we all remember. If he can't get back to that level it's probably smart to deal him now because we're probably at the high point of his trade value which will drop considerably if he's resigned to just being a jump shooter in the future. It's decisions like these that justify the big money GM's like Mullin make.
by norcaldevilasu on Jun 19, 2007 12:19 PM PDT reply actions
His knee looked fine
He's playing like Ray Allen (jump shooter from range) when he should be playing like Carmelo Anthony (barreling into the lane and finishing with strength and size).
The last couple years he's taken 6.4 three's in 38 MPG and 5.9 in 32.9 MPG, nearly double what he did when coming into the league. While his percentage has increased, from bad to decently good (37%ish), he's costing himself alot of opportunities by not attacking the basket or refining his post game. Richardson's skills and our system should allow him to shoot closer to 50%.
UNFORTUNATELY, Richardson has been unable to even shoot 70% from the free throw line, which means when he does attack the basket, he's leaving a ton of points on the line. Realstically, he should shoot above 75, 80% if he wants to be a more reliable, elite scorer.
And that's why i think Richardson will be stuck as a marginally efficient, 20PPG scorer, instead of a stud 25-30 point scorer: he's drifting farther and farther from the basket and he doesn't shoot FT's well enough to get easy points in the paint or at the line.

Dispell this now
I've been close to the Bucks for a while because a player on their team is a geuninely good friend of mine and he was told that the Bucks will re-sign both Charlie Bell and Mo Williams, most of their cap space goes poof. They plan on drafting Conley (who had a STELLAR workout this week) and retaining Patterson on the relative cheap.
I asked about this J-Rich stuff and he literally laughed and said "Pree, why would we bring in J-Rich if we already have Redd?" He admitted they needed some big man help, but said if this deal happens, he'll be surprised.
End it.
If the Warriors want...
Sorry to reiterate...
If I'm them, what I do is sign Gerald Wallace outright, then move the #6 pick to the Celtics (who would give either that pick or the #5 for Marion or just grab another piece) for Rajon Rondo and some pieces like Perkins (Rondo is an amazing fit for a team like that).
Let's use #6, Gadzuric, and a S+T'd Boykins for Rondo, Perkins, and Delonte West
They could go something like this:
PG: Rondo / West
SG: Redd / Charlie Bell
SF: Gerald Wallace / Bobby Simmons
PF: Charlie V / Skinner / Markota
C: Bogut / Perkins
As for the Warriors, I hope that they get a guy like Brewer (athletic, oversized 2) or Horford if they move up.
my God...
Get it through your heads.

I'm starting to worry
Atma, If you are so worried why do you start a new Yi thread almost every day? reminds me of the talk shows that jump on the missing child or celebrity death and say how awfull it is but still they talk and talk about it which makes me think they are glad someone died for their ratings?

I'm down to trade Monta or other players
Well trading monta to move up makes sense but not to get Yi, if we could get Conley or Horford for monta that would be great . We don't need Yi, we've got enough outside shooters, we need a big inside guy or a future point guard more. What I was trying to say is instead of another YI movement we need some anti-Yi threads to stop the machine. Remember how absurd it was the first time you heard that GWBush wanted to be president, but no one talked the idea down and damn look what happened. I learned to not sit by and let bad ideas go un-challenged!

Whoa
But if they did, this is a pretty good deal for the Warriors...
Why? It frees up $11mil. We can go sign a Rashard Lewis or Gerald Wallace type of free agent. Plus we'd be able to resign Monta and Biedrins with reasonable financial comfort. Yi or whoever else we'd get at #6 would just be a sweet bonus.
