Rumor: Cavaliers Interested in Trading for Jason Richardson

Despite getting swept in the NBA Finals by the San Antonio Snores the Cleveland Cavaliers had a remarkable season. Lebron looks like he's headed towards greatness especially in the Leastern Conference and while Coach Mike Brown doesn't exactly preach Nellieball he's a keeper as a great defensive tactician. But if the Cavs are ever going to make it over the hump from NBA Finals fluke to legit contender they're going to need a serious upgrade for LB23's sidekick. Larry Phillips for the Telegraph Forum say he's hearing the Warriors' Jason Richardson is one of their targets:

This offseason is incredibly intriguing for a team locked in by the salary cap and with no draft picks later this month.

I'm reading in earnest whispers Ferry is going to make a big pitch to deal for a legitimate sidekick to James. Golden State's Jason Richardson, Rashard Lewis in Seattle, Portland's Zach Randolph and Shawn Marion of Phoenix have been mentioned.

Any of those players would be a dramatic upgrade to the collection of stiffs and a boobie that tags along for a free ride with James.

There's also talk of Ferry trying to buy his way into the draft, and owner Dan Gilbert has approved going over the cap and into the luxury tax.

Ferry and Co. have to know James could lead the Cavaliers back to the NBA Finals regularly. Despite the idiocy being spewed nationally, I believe the Cavs are one player away from going over the top.

If James were driving and kicking to Marion or Lewis or Richardson. If he had a true low-post presence like Randolph. James can find a way to the finish line. He showed immense improvement this year, lifting his club past a battle-scarred Detroit team the Cavs couldn't finish last spring.

There's no doubt JRich would be a huge upgrade for the Cavs as Lebron's sidekick, but I can't see any trade scenario that actually helps out the Warriors. None. Nada. Nothing.

Aside from Lebron is there any trade with the Cavs featuring Jason Richardson that you think would help the Warriors?

If

Verajao becomes a Dub I'll become a LA Kobe's fan. I hate that scrub and I don't think he'd do much for us other than flop. If we're going to be trading J Rich for him, the Cavs had better be taking Foyle too for Mullin to even consider that lopsided trade. The only player on the Cavs I would consider is Drew Gooden, not sure what his salary look likes but I think he's the only player on the Cavs that could really help us, other than LBJ of course.

yeah that would be garbage, but

try showing some loyalty...

that said, i concur, i would only send jrich to cleveland if they take foyle too.

and only taking back the expiring deals of david wesley & ira newble(tr). gooden plus sign & trade w/ pavlovic(rfa). as long as pav's deal begins at $4+ mill it should work - if not throw in shannon brown or have them resign & trade pollard to a 1 yr deal.

this'll free up $10-12 mill in '08-'09 depending on how much pav makes that yr and whether they re-up brown. this should allow them to extend both andris & monta, resign barnes & kelenna, as well as replace pietrus.

One more thing

when it comes down to it the Cavs are in no position to trade, they really have no pieces to trade, no draft picks, nothing and I doubt they'd consider trading Daniel Gibson after his post season. So I don't see how a trade would materialize with any of those player mentioned, except for Lewis because he's a FA.

Unlikely deal

unless Gooden or maybe Varaejo are coming back I pass, and I don't think the Cavs are trying to trade either of those players.

They really need to unload excess contracts from their backcourt.

If the Cavs could be a third team that sends contracts to Minny so that they get JRich and we get KG then I'd be OK with it.

Gooden and Varejao are not very good.....

If you could merge the two players together into one (Drewderson Goodejao), then we could talk about a trade. But realistically, neither is an upgrade over Al Harrington. Gooden is very inconsistent, he shows up for one game out of every four or five. And Varejao is nothing more than a good sixth man, he will never be a starter in the NBA, no offense to speak of.

Giving up a starter like Richardson should bring back more than one of those two guys. If Gooden had Varejao's energy and hustle, then we could talk!

I would have to think long and hard about that one. We would be giving up that best player in the deal but filling some needs in doing so. We would get our rebounder to fill out our frontcourt rotation, a young backup PG, and a big who can shoot the three and stretch the defense(which Nellie always likes). I don't know if I would do this trade but if we are not going to snatch a big name this is the kind af deal we will need to make to stay competitive next year.

It would also be nice to trade one of our 2nd rounders for a future first if they like the deal. this would give them a pick this year (even though it would be a late one).

The salaries are 4 million off, we'd have to take Cabbages out, which is a good idea because we can use his expiring contract around the trading deadline if we need to. But overall I don't think I'd want to give up J Rich for those 3 players.

I checked the salaries real quick but i guess I wasn't paying close attention.
I'm not really sure I like this particular trade either but something like this might be good for the team. If we can find a way of turning JRich into a rebounder, a back-up PG and another player that could help us it would fill some holes without creating any new ones. Thanks to Monta we could move JRich without missing him on the court all that much. (Missing him in our hearts would be another matter)

but there's no way we're getting fair value back because everyone on that Cavs roster is garbage except for James

If there were a sign and trade with Varejao, it would be better, although still not ideal:

Newble's expiring (cut him after)
David Wesley's expiring (cut him after)

We'd save what, $5M/year and upgrade front court depth. I do like Varajeo, as he's mobile, energetic, plays defense, has some ball handling and perimeter skills, and isn't afraid of contact. ...but Richardson is a high price to pay since Varejao won't be cheap and we're not even getting a first rounder back
