Decide what the Warriors will do in the 2007 NBA Draft

There's just something magical about this time of year for the GSoM community. For two straight years we've voted on who we want the Warriors take in the NBA Draft and ended up getting that player.

I'm not even joking.

Thanks Chris for Danny Fortson 2.0?

2006 NBA Draft
Right before the draft...

2k6-gsom-draftpoll.jpg

Thanks for taking Patrick O'Bryant with a 9th pick so bad that the commish David Stern called it the 10th pick!

Even with the slimmest of margins the future NBA hoopstar (well, if you want to call Ike and POB that) who the GSoM community voted for ended up being a Warrior (for the record I wanted Hakim Warrick in 2005 and Rodney Carney in 2006- so don't blame me!). In Ike and most likely POB's case that wasn't for too long, but oh well. Let's see if we can do like the 90's Bulls and the Shaq + Kobe Lakers and go for the 3-peat.

The SBN poll system allows us to put up 10 options. One of those will go to Yi Jianlian (after all there's been a ton of Yi to the Dubs rumors and there's that Yi Movement thing), but the remaining 9 are all up in the air. With the Dubs picking so late it's going to be trickier than the past when they were slotted to pick #9 since a lot of trades and silly front office moves (ahem, Danny Ainge and Kevin McHale) can go down, but let's see if we can keep that streak alive. Post other realistic options for the pick that you'd like to see in the annual GSoM draft poll in the comments section by Monday June 25th at 12pm PST.

List the names of the players you're feeling in the comments or forever hold your piece. If history is any indication you'll want to take this seriously.

Spread the word about this poll to every Warriors fan you know. This is BIG. Don't sleep!

Stay tuned for our 3rd Annual Live Blogging of the NBA Draft!

Well
  1. Yi - China
  2. Julian Wright - Kansas
  3. Tiago Splitter - Brazil
  4. Thadeus Young - Georgia Tech
  5. Morris Almond - Rice
6  Rudy Fernandez - Europe

I'm really hoping we can land one of these 6 players, I think all 6 could come in and be productive in Nellie's system immediately. In the latest mock draft on DraftExpress, they have us selecting Tiago Splitter. What's interesting is I thought Julian Wright was a for sure top 10 pick but they have him falling all the way to 16 to the Wizards so it kinda gives me some hope that we could some how snag him. Young, Almond and Fernandez go 20, 21 and 22 in the draft so it might be possible to snag one of these guys.

I like that list a lot
I'd love to have any one of those guys. Another possible "slider" I might add is Al Thornton -- I heard rumors he might be dropping into the mid-round. Where we're picking, all it would really take is a couple of "reaches" by teams above us for us to grab a lotttery-type talent.

Basically I think we should always, always be Best Player Available -- BPA all day, all night. This means keeping an open mind and adjusting based on who gets picked ahead of us. I sometimes wonder what would have happened last year if Rudy Gay had slipped one more spot to us at #9. I like to think we would have been nimble enough mentally to grab him, but given our draft history, I'm not so sure.

Who should the Warriors draft?
With the 18th pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, the Golden State Warriors select...

Sean Williams, PF, Boston College.

He's 6-10/235 with a 7-5 wingspan. Defensive monster averaging 5 blocks per game in the ACC. Athletic and aggressive big that the warriors desperately need. A young Theo Ratliff, he'll average 10-8-3. If it wasn't for his "drug problems" he would be a lottery pick. And I don't think he's such a big risk. What was his crime? Oh...is that still illegal? Give me a break.

well...
Looks like I wasn't the only one "high" on Williams. He did NOT go in the second round. He went with the 17th pick, damn just missed him. But somehow Mullin managed to get and even better talent in Brandan Wright to fill our PF need. What a great move! Only thing I don't understand is Lasme in the 2nd round. Taurean Green was available and I think he'll be a very nice backup PG, oh well.

I'm feelin
julian wright. If he's available at 18 we'll probably take him cuz he's the best player available.

but right now it doesn't look like his work outs are going too well.

Ike and POB, Two Busts.
PLEASE be kind to the Warriors this year.  No more big stiffs!  Stop drafting for NEED and this won't happen.  I say go for a wing or guard who you know will contribute, draft Nellie players.

Julian Wright, if he somehow falls, he would be a perfect fit here.

If not, take Rodney Stuckey. Dude attacks the rim and gets to the line(9 times a game) and hits his FTs(88%).

trade up for yi
should be a choice. cuz i dont think yi will be available at 18.

thaddeus young is a possibility too, as is derrick byars. i would rather the warriors stick with the pick and get young or splitter

SEAN WILLIAMS
but in all honesty the kid is making it extremely difficult for himself. After reading the latest article on draft express:
http://www.draftexpress.com/viewarticle.php?a=2132
I have concerns for sure.
But his talent and the need he fills for this team are obvious.
I would also be interested in Thad Young if the W's stand pat at #18.

Let's Go Oakland! Gas, Brake, Dip.

Yikes
Thanks for the article. I know a lot of guys are high on him around here, but man. He has 2nd round (and future bust) written all over him.

my wish list

2nd round: herbert hill, a backup pg

Warriors trade up and snag Noah, sign Lee Humphrey
I hope the Warriors trade up to the 9, 10 or 11 spot and snag Noah.  He would fit perfectly in Nellie ball. He's a great defender, runs the floor, a ball magnet who digs rebounds, is charismatic and a super leader.  I also hope they somehow get his sharpshooting teammate Humphrey.  I just remember winning the March Madness pool at work and how Humphrey would just light it up in critical junctures against tough teams.     Man, if the Warriors could get those two players, to go with Baron, Jackson, Harrington, OMG.

Kirk

I like Noah too
But how do we trade up? Moving up 9-10 slots in this draft is no gimme. It'd probably cost us Al Harrington, at minimum. Just another example of why drafting POB, who has precisely zero value, was such a boneheaded move. Rodney Carney + #18 might actually get you in the #10-12 range.

by Sleepy Freud on Jun 23, 2007 11:16 PM PDT up reply actions

noooo
there is no need to trade up for varejao 2.0

Thornton
Not sure why he would slip to 18 because all that I have read is how good he looks in workouts and he is playing against other potential lottery picks in the workouts not hiding like branden wright and yi.

I look at it this way
This year's draft is like last year's draft plus ten. In other words, a #13-14 guy this year is like a #3-4 guy last year. (Remember Adam Morrison, basically a poor man's Rudy Fernandez, went #3 last year). So it's kinda like we're picking #8 in a mediocre draft year. Last year, Rudy Gay slid to #8. This year there's at least a chance Thornton, Nick Young, Julian Wright, or even Yi slides to #18. I just hope we're open-minded enough to grab one of them if/when they do.

Jason Smith - Colorado State
