Rumor: Pietrus Sign and Trade

Was about to post this but dallaswarrior beat me to it. Just going to move it from the diaries to the main section.
-- FJ

===============================================
The majority of us wouldn't mind seeing MP in a different uniform. He often makes stupid mistakes and the like. However it seems that certain teams value him more then we do.

http://www.miamiherald.com/588/story/166777.html

(Scroll to the bottom for the part about MP) If the heat do indeed want to work a sign and trade with us who would you want back. I say Haslem as he would make us a much tougher team on the interior and solve our biggest problems rebounding and interior defense. There are also possibilities such as Jason Williams and James Posey.

Who do you want in a sign and trade?
===============================================

Here's the actual text from the article.

Happy Walters, the agent for Golden State restricted free agent Mickael Pietrus, said the Heat's Randy Pfund told him he plans to contact the Warriors about a potential sign-and-trade for the 6-6, multiskilled, 25-year-old small forward.

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

i'd prefer
the sign and trade for calderon of the raptors. i don't know if they'd do it but jc would be a great back up for baron.

I can't see the point in doing this
for either side

Heat-is the demand for MP that huge that they can't just sign him?

Warriors-who on the heat would we want to take on with our cap issues?

by Zig on Jul 11, 2007 11:35 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Heat are signing Mo Williams
They are trying to get him for the full MLE since they are already over the cap.  That means they don't have anymore money to give MP, thus meaning they'd have to do a trade to make salaries match.

IMO I wouldn't mind taking JWill since he only has 1 year left and we have the 10 mil trade exception from the Richardson deal.  That way we have a veteran backup who has run the "run and gun" before (not very well), but at least he is a true point guard.

thanks for the Miami part
Makes sense.  For us JWill is sort of eh.

How much does haslem make?
He can be making that much money and our cap issues arent that bad. I would rather pick him up Haslem then barnes

In our system Barens might be the better choice
Maybe not.  Anyhow this is questionable as Haslem isn't a worldbeater

Anyhow I hope there is a point to this sign and trade if true

He might be a better fit
but we have enough huys like him and we can find more. I dont think HAslem is our messiah either but he will fill a definate need and he has a good mid range game can d-up and board

t-e
take a player with a large contract with one year left potentially that another team is trying to get rid of so we can use our trade exception for one year then let him walk. that is if we can't find another way to use it.

by raypress23 on Jul 11, 2007 11:44 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

that would be retarded
if we're gonna do that, we might as well just let the exception expire.

I
agree with miguelito, I wish there were some way we could pry Jose Calderon away from the Raptors. I think he'd be a great back up to BD. He proved with the Raptors last season that he's got some game, too bad we probably can't get him.

As for the Heat, I don't think I'd want to take on any of their contracts. Especially not Jason Williams, he's about done for with his knees so he'd probably be pretty useless. Haslem would give us some toughness but I think he has a multi year deal and we really don't need to eat the remaining years on his contract.

blah
do we necessarily have to take a player back??why not get another trade exception.  Seattle got 2nd round pick and a 9 mil trade exception for Lewis from Orlando.

by maybenextyear on Jul 11, 2007 11:50 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Orlando
Orlando is under the cap, so they were able to take extra salary and Seattle got a TE in exchange.  Miami has two players that basically puts them over the cap in Shaq and Wade.  We can't get a TE.

We can, however, get an expiring back.  Or two.  What if we combine Foyle with Pietrus and get back Doleac and Williams.  Then in a month we can turn them around with POB, Wright, Harrington and a future 1st to get KG.  Two expirings could really give us some leverage in the KG talks.

Miami contracts
Here are the available Miami guys that could come back in a sign and trade:

Jason Williams, $8.9M expiring contract. It'd be nice to have that expiring because it's very useful trade-wise and he'd be a quality backup point. However, I can't see the Heat giving Pietrus a matching salary in the $9M range, which is what they'd have to do to make work. Who knows, maybe they are stupid enough to pay Pietrus that much.

Udonis Haslem has 3 years at about $6.5M/per left. Thats much more realistic, as it's something more than the MLE. However, the heat don't have a forward to replace Haslem, AND we don't really need his 3 years left since we already have Harrington, Wright, and Jackson at the forward spots for the next 3 years.

Michael Doleac, $3M expiring. I doubt Pietrus gets this little.

Everyone else is either a rookie or too expensive (Shaq, Wade, Antoine Walker, Alonzo mourning ain't going anywhere).

So we are a poor match salary wise.

Theoretically what we could do is take jason Williams back with our trade exception.

The Heat would then have a trade exception of their own, which we would then sign and trade Pietrus for.

So:

Trade #1
We take $9.8M Jason Williams back. Heat gain $9.8M trade exception

Trade #2:
We sign Pietrus to a starting salary of about $6M and trade him to Miami for nothing; they use $6M of their trade exception.

End result is we have Jason Williams and they have Pietrus at $6M and a $3M trade exception.

Convoluted to say the least. JWil might be useful as a backup PG, but we already have Sarunas who isn't that much better or worse than him. Kinda pointless for us unless we get a draft pick out of the deal.

by OptionZero on Jul 11, 2007 1:24 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Wrong...
You just don't get an exemption if the salaries don't make. I've been going over this all day on the Sonics blogs (ya I'm sonics fan, but I have Warriors season tickets so I keep up on you guys too).

You get an exemption if one team is under the cap and take on more salary than the standard +/- 25% rule allows. Your scenario of 8.9 million of J-Will for 6 million for Pietrus is nearly within the 25% rule. Plus, the warriors already own an exemption so they could just absorb J-Will for Pietrus without an sign and trade and send his restrict right to Miami (though I'm sure Miami would  want it to be an S/T to make sure they don't lose him). Finally, you point on Miami getting an exemption out of it. You only get an exemption to replace the player you lost. Technically we did not get a player for J-Rich, we got a draft pick. So we qualified for an exemption to replace the lose of a player.

thanks
But as I understand it, the idea you mentioned about dealing Pietrus for JWill doesn't work under the rules.

The trade-exception cannot be combined with outgoing players on our side, so we could not use Pietrus +  a portion of the J-Will trade.

If s/t Pietrus for J-will, Pietrus will need to get a paid approximately $7.84M,...which is quite a bit, more than i bet Miami would want to pay him.

I can't see anything working out btw the two teams unless we bring in another team to balance the books  a bit.

Haslem is the man...
Career average of 10 Pts 8 Rebs a game.  He brings a presence in the paint that is more pronounced than SJax, Harrington, Powell and Barnes-no doubt about it.  With all the crying of how we need more rebounding, I think a guy like Udonis fits the same bill as a Varajau or Drew Gooden and if we have to pay him the same ($6 million)per year as a Pietrus or Barnes, we should do it-all of course as a sign and trade with Pietrus, not Barnes.  And the 3 year part of his contract, just trade his butt next year if he doesn't work out for us.  If we can trade JRich with $48,000,000 left on his contract, I think we could trade Udonis with 12 million left on his contract.

As I have said a million times, we have enough guys at the gaurd position in BD, Monta, Belinelli and Buike.  Sign a big guy!  Thats all I have been reading for the past 2 months.

Get Real
No way Miami trades Haslem for Pietrus. Who are you guys kidding? Duh, obviously Haslem would "fit" on our team. He was the starting power forward on a championship team, averaging 10 and 8. And he's only making 7 mil per year. Why don't we just trade Jasikevicius for Drew Gooden, and Josh Powell for Kevin Garnett, I think those guys would fit too! Unbelievable.

You're much more realistically looking at Doleac or the whole convoluted Jason Williams thing, but I don't see either of these happening. Amazing what kind of stupid reaction one stupid rumor can cause.

by warriordrp on Jul 11, 2007 4:27 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Doleac?
I think you may be underestimating Mickael, and overestimating Udonis. There are alot of better PF's in the NBA than Haslem, that Miami wouldnt mind having. Haslem can rebound, defend in the post, but cant block a shot, and he has a nice set shot from 18. I think Josh Powell can be a better player, to be quite honest.

Just because Haslem was on a championship team means absolutely NOTHING.

Derek Fisher was a starter on a championship team, and you dont see people on here(at least the ones that know anything) screaming to get him on the W's. Sure, he contributed, hit clutch shot's, etc. But its not like the Lakers couldnt have won without him. It seems like the rings Kobe and Shaq won, were the only reason he landed here in the first place.(Derek's a nice guy)

Pietrus showed that he has alot of talent in different areas, and he can play 3 positions. We are fresh off a worldwide shocking performance in the playoffs, giving him more value now than he ever will. To say he is not worth a Udonis Haslem is dumb. Im sorry, but its dumb.

This is my team There are many like it But this one is mine. My team, without me is useless. Without my team, I am useless

by BlueNgoldBlood on Jul 11, 2007 4:40 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

What?
Really? Pietrus can play 3 positions? He has enough trouble playing 1 position. Stepping out of bounds on his set shot for god sakes. Can't dribble or pass and he's a guard. Assist to TO ratio is 0.8 assists to 1.5 TO, now that is ridiculous! If you would give up Haslem for Pietrus, then you are retarted.

Of course, I will turn out to be right, and Mullin will not resign Pietrus at all (thank god). And I will let you know all about it when it happens.

btw, Josh Powell?? Are you kidding? I'll bet whatever you want that Powell never averages 10pts and 9 reb in a season in the NBA.

But then again, i'm probably responding to a little kid, so just remember to mind your mother and study hard slugger. Everything will be ok.

by warriordrp on Jul 12, 2007 2:01 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hahaha...alright
"Really? Pietrus can play 3 positions? He has enough trouble playing 1 position. Stepping out of bounds on his set shot for god sakes. Can't dribble or pass and he's a guard. Assist to TO ratio is 0.8 assists to 1.5 TO, now that is ridiculous! If you would give up Haslem for Pietrus, then you are retarted."

Nelson played Pietrus numerous times at shooting gaurd and power forward in a small ball line up.

His natural position is SF because of his ability to defend those guys in the post, his length, and his rebounding. If you watched any games last year, you would know what I'm talking about. So instead of trying to call me a retard or a kid, or whoever the fu** you think your talking to, just keep a few things in consideration before you do...

1.I never said Mickael was a smart player, in fact, Ive state numerous times on this blog that I think hes a stupid player with the ball, and makes too many brainless turnovers.

His game supposedly thrives in the fast break, which it does, when hes given the ball on the finishing end, but give him the ball half-court, and 2/3 times he will make a stupid decision and turn it over. Its a big downside considering that he is player that clearly has the potential to thrive in those situations.

2.I said that Powell "can" become a better player than Haslem, not that he will, not that he has more value, but he can.

At 23-24 hes shown very good skill shooting the ball from out to 18(like Haslem), He's athletic, physical, and he can rebound. He has not gotten the minutes Haslem has to prove that he can do these things on a squad throughout the season.

Since you clearly think Im just some stupid kid, I could see how easy it would be for you to not put any thought into this and just dismiss it as a bunch of shit.

I didnt suspect that you would realize that Haslem also plays along people like Shaq who demand all the attention in the paint, and Mourning who are big bodies and help his rebounding numbers alot, and allow him to step out to 15-18 for uncontested jump shots. Powell could hit that same shot every time.

Lastly, I would probably not make this trade straight up if I were Miami. We would probably have to include Sarunas and a 2nd round pick. But who can really say, Ive seen MUCH worse trades than a Pietrus/Haslem straight up. (Claxton/Davis) (Dun,Murph/Jackson,Harrington)

I dont understand why people got to be some little poo butt ass bastards when it comes to arguing. We can call eachother names all day...to me, its kind of stupid insulting some one who cant get you in a hold and knee you in the spine until you pass out.

Lets just stick to basketball folks... no need for insults here, besides...your a fan, Im a fan. Peace. Save all that talk talk for Faker and kings fans when they come down to Oracle next season. Unless your just some "big man" who fights on the computer. LOL peace, brother man

Typos happen.
Many of the comments I see on GSOM are so stupid that they are clearly from little kids. I thought my reasoning was pretty sound, that Pietrus is totally worthless (equivalent to Doleac). But your statement was:

"To say he (Pietrus) is not worth a Udonis Haslem is dumb. Im sorry, but its dumb."

That just made me laugh, and it is so off base that I had to call you retarded. Nothing personal, you just don't know basketball if you think that trade would ever happen.

I agree with everyone on Haslem.
I would like to see him come to the Warriors in this deal.

Although, I think that our very own Josh Powell will have a very similiar game to Haslem's. If we could somehow talk them into giving us Kapono as well, Id be thrilled.

The only thing I really don't like about Haslem's game is that hes not a good shotblocker, and hes a bit undersized. I would rather have Wilcox than Haslem. I would rather see a sign-and-trade to Seattle to land Wilcox instead. Maybe throw Sarunas at them as well, and POB for one of their less talented PG's.

You guys like Wilcox better?

almost a wash
Wilcox is a talented underachiever.

Haslem is physically limited (size) but produces.

The two are about the same #'s wise

In about 30minutes a game each,
Wilcox: 13.5 PPG, 7.7 RPG, .5 BPG
Haslem: 10.7 PPG, 8.3 RPG, .3 BPG

The next two years, each makes about $6M, but Haslem has a 3rd year on his deal with about $7M. He's a good value at that price.

I like Haslem more because he's played well on a winning team for a while; Wilcox is known as a lazy bum.

you can't just
look at Udonis' block numbers. He is actually a really good defender at his position, although he does it by using his strength by moving opposing PF's out of position rather than blocking the shot. Udonis would only upgrade out D because he can also board.

Wilcox > Haslem
Younger, longer, more athletic, much bigger upside, more efficient on offense (.571 and .529 the past two seasons v. .508 and .492) and more active on defense (career 1.0/0.7 stl/blk per 40 minutes vs. 0.8/0.4). Last two seasons' PER:

Wilcox: 17.3/16.6
Haslem: 13.7/13.7 (hey, at least he's consistent!)

Haslem's a nice enough player, but he provides zero in terms of interior defensive help, something I think should be a sine qua non in our search for a Nellieball 4. He's basically in the same boat as Fortson, Diogu, Chuck Hayes, or any number of undersized NBA 4s: pretty efficient offensively, solid rebounder, not very well-suited to Nellieball. Honestly, I don't think there's much of dropoff from Haslem to Josh Powell. (Partly b/c I really like what I've seen so far this summer from Powell).

Pietrus for Haslem is definitely a "meh" move. Wilcox I could get a little more excited about.

Haslem is a really good defender
Just because you dont block shots doesnt mean you arent a good defender. Plus Haslem has no off court issues as in being lazy and such. I would just rather have a guy with his head screwed on straight especially on this team.

Blocked shots
Aren't the only measure of D, but for big men they're certainly a good indicator -- as surely as steals are for small guys.

All the great defenders -- Jordan, Pippen, Payton, Kidd, Duncan, Mutombo, etc. -- seem to pick up their share of blocks or steals or both. (Jordan racked up 3.2 spg/1.6 bpg one year, to go with 35 ppg!) Haslem does neither. Color me skeptical.

by Sleepy Freud on Jul 11, 2007 6:06 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Is bowen a good defender? (only .7 steals a game)
Raja bell? (only .6 steals per game) Teyshawn Prince? (.6 steals and .67 blocks) Baron averaged 2.14 a gaem but would you rather him guard Kobe then these three? I understand that most big guys that are good defenders block a lot of shots but you dont have to. Dennis Rodman never averaged over a block per game his whole career but was he a great defender. Just like the three previously mentioned dont get a plethora of steals, Rodman didnt get a bunch of blocks.  Neither does Haslem.
Haslem is more of a 3/4 tweener which would be a four for us. I understand your suspicions but he is a solid defender. He did a great job on Dirk in the finals two years ago. Also he boards and is physical.
I am not saying he is a God defensivly but he is solid and he would help us out a lot on both ends of the ball, not too mention we need a few guys on this team that are calm cool and collected.
THE HEART AND SOUL OF THE W'S

by dallaswarrior on Jul 11, 2007 6:26 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You may be right
Honestly, outside of the '06 finals, I haven't seen Haslem play that much; and I do think smart fans' and coaches' subjective impressions are important when assessing defense.

Still ... 0.5 blocks per game (career) out of the 4 spot isn't really cutting it for me. In Barnes/Pietrus/Jax/Powell/Buki (depending on who we keep), we have 4-5 guys who are at least above average at guarding 2s and 3s; but as long as Foyle stays glued to the bench, we have no one to help AB guard the rim against the Boozers and Duncans of the world. (Nowitzki's a different animal: I seem to remember Jax and Barnes also locking down the Dirkster...) I guess I could see Haslem as a solid replacement for Pietrus/Barnes -- minus a bit of speed, and plus a bit of rebounding -- but I don't think he really fills our need for interior defense.

Now, if Brandan Wright develops a lot faster than we're expecting -- or, better yet, if he gets spun into KG -- Haslem could do what he does well (rebound and play hard, make open shots) and not have to worry about defending the rim. That I could see.

Baron
Jax/Belinelli/Buki
Haslem or Barnes
Garnett/Powell
Biedrins

Pietrus for Haslem straight up: sure, if we can swing it, I think it'd be a solid move. I just don't think it's the move.

but I dont think we really have a move that makes us an instant contender. Even a KG trade will take a year to make us a contender because our roster will be left a little drained after trading for him.

But I think a move like this would be one in the right direction. Thats all we want right? To keep going in the right direction so we can be champs.

i totally agree
Haslem would definitely be a step in the right direction. He can guard the 4 spot! That'd take a lot of pressure off of AB to handle the load down low. I honestly would take Udonis over Wilcox because you know what you're going to get out of Haslem each night, while WIlcox remains a mystery.

isn't a 3.

I like Wilcox too!
I didn't know Wilcox was available at a $6 million/year deal.  If thats true, he would be a better buy than Haslem by a bit.  I don't know what interest Seattle has with any of our players, but Wilcox would be a nice buy.  I will say Haslem has a little nicer touch from around 10-16 feet range.  Seems like he is always making set shots from around that range, kinda nice to see from a guy his size.

by gabezgsw on Jul 11, 2007 3:46 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

ya...
"I don't know what interest Seattle has with any of our players" That's the same thing I fear as well. I think there would have to be a 3rd party involved. Seattle seems to not have any needs for what we could offer them(Pietrus=Green/Durant, Harrington=Wilcox,Sarunas=Luke,Watson,West)

Go head and call me crazy but...
With Alonzo Mourning still deciding whether or not he will be returning next season, I find it very possible that the Warriors would be able to put Foyle in the mix as well.

Just think about it for a minute.

Foyle fits in better with an East coast team. His shotblocking and defense could spell Mourning. They could use him as an effective back up to Shaquille O'Neal.

From what I see...
There are not many good options. J-Will would be a nice rent-a-player for a year but as OZ and McWalter already went over this would be difficult to make work. I don't think that the Heat would give us Haslem for MP and even if they did I'm not sure it would be a good move. I like him as a player but I don't know if he would be a good fit and I'm not crazy about taking long term deals back for MP. It seems to me that letting him walk might be the best option unless we can get a somewhat usefull player with an expiring deal or an exp deal and a 2nd round pick. The heat seem to be a bad match for us in a trade.

With our salary cap position for 08-09
I can only see us dealing for an expiring contract. Maybe Pietrus and Sarunas for J-Will, or can you not  include someone else in from the same side in a sign and trade?

by racsan on Jul 11, 2007 5:43 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I see....but how about...
Including Harrington in the sign and trade. This would add more fire power and could really land us a talented player. I would like to see us make the trade with a team that has a wealth of cap room. A team with two talented PF's that could afford to trade one away.

This way we would be trading away Pietrus instead of just losing him obviously, but also trading Harrington along with his contract for a true PF that fits NellieBall. The importance of trading to a team under the cap would be to give the deal more flexibility.

I have not done my homework. Does anyone know of a team with a player like this available? This has nothing to do with it, but I really like Jason Maxiell. If they re-sign Webber, Id make an offer for him.

Maxiel
He's apparently been a beast in the summer league. But I don't think the Pistons come close to being under the cap after re-signing Billups. I don't know if they'd want anyone we would be offering. I'm pretty sure they're going to hang on to Maxiel.

BRING IN J=WILL
Jason Williams is built to play for the warriors. Just think back to his days in sac. uptempo threes flying, alley ooping, elbow passing jason williams. His style would really benefit the warriors. I think he could play with b diddy at the same time and still be effective. I dont like the idea of an undersized udonis haslem.

He's not ..
the same player he used to be. Otherwise, Id agree on taking him. Although if I were Nelson, and J Will started launching his famous random clankers 3 feet behind the line, I would tell him what my first boss told me on the job after I jumped into a 8 ft. ditch.

"Boy, you do that again and I'm going to have to take you down to Kaiser, to get my foot out of your ass."

its kinda funny how...
MP2's agent's name is Happy Walters.

but i like miguelito's idea and bringing Jose Calderon to the Bay.

J-Will could help net KG
If you bring back J-Will, he'll be the only other move of the summer (http://goldenstateofmind.com/story/2007/7/11/0041/28000) but having his expiring deal means the Warriors could make a run for KG at the deadline (or whenver White Chocolate can be moved).

It makes the Warriors more attractive since the Wolves would get some cap relief to sign some FAs next summer, but I still don't think it is enough.

"multi-skilled?"
Since when does only having the ability to shoot the corner three and being able to dunk over an opponent with the opposite hand "multi-skilled?"  "Duo-skilled" maybe, but multiskilled?  More like multi-flawed.  Don't get me wrong, I ain't no MP2 hater, I just think his "skills" are extremely limited.  I wouldn't be upset with keeping him on the dubs.  But if trading him meant getting someone like Haslem. . . . well. . . peace out MP2.

by sleepys29againstshowtime on Jul 11, 2007 10:30 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hes got..
"multi talents", I wouldnt really call them multi skills, but more importantly, hes also got multi mental breakdowns and the B ball IQ of a baboon.

Its extremely frustrating to see a guy that could be such a better player, if he only learned the English language better(allowing him to understand coaching properly), and made some big strides over the summer to improve on his defensive tools.

i have a idea
how about we trade MP2 to Miami for Antoine Walker and a 2nd round pick

We have a point forward that played with Don Nelson in  his Maverick days.  He thrives on the break. Hes a decent 3 point shooter.  At times he can be the point guard so he can take some pressure off Monta when baron is on the bench or injured.  I dont know if it works financially but if it does, would this roster work out for you?

PG.Baron/cabbages
SG.Monta/Marco/buike
SF.Jack/barnes
PF.Tmnt/walker/lasme
C.Beans/wright/powell/foyle

Looks like we have a pretty deep bench for 07-08

i hope we win a championship soon

I just threw up in my mouth...
Im sorry man, but I HATE Antoine Walker's game. He is Harrington without the post D, more turnovers, less of a shooter, more of a whiner, he comes to camp every year out of shape, hes a wanna be point who gets the ball taken away from him. Not to mention hes a blundering ballhog of a fool. He also has like 4 years left on his contract.

I would scream naked from the rooftops promising revenge if Mullin traded him for MP and whatever. I wouldnt trade Foyle for him straight up, and I think they have the same salaries.

I dont mean to dump on you man, but I dont like him.

A back-up point gaurd.

Who would you guys want the most?(be realistic, no Kobe's)

might as well
keep him because one, we need an athletic swingman, two, their really are none available that are that good, and three, we won't be able to get crap back for him.

Wouldnt you rather have Barnes?
Its debatable.

Although Id take Barnes. Ive put alot of thought into it.

But then it suddenly occured to me... Who would you rather have on the ball, offense or defense, in a game time win/lose situation?

Id just have to take Barnes.

Plus, with the addition of Belinelli and Wright...and the upcoming of Bookie and Powell... theres just not enough minutes to go around. We've got plenty of young talent. In my mind Pietrus is still sort of a project. Let him go and make his fortune elsewhere.

yeah
ur right.  i was actually talking about might as well keep them both, but your right barnes is better and i forgot about buike and belinelli being guys that can fill the void.
