KG: post-draft preference still MIN?

Sorry if this has been covered in a different diary but I was just bumbling around online and came upon this article.  The first part talks about KG and his preference to stay w/the Wolves:

"I talked to K.G. about it; I said, 'You're going to hear a lot of (rumors) stuff, but I'll call you if something really happens.' I just asked him (about a trade), and he'd say, 'No, I haven't changed my mind.'

"I said, 'We're probably going to bring in (top draft pick Corey) Brewer with one more young guy, so you've got young guys, and you're going to have a younger team.' And he said, 'I don't think I mind playing with those guys.'

"In the end, nothing really happened."

The Wolves will continue to discuss trade scenarios, Taylor said, but they won't include Garnett.

anyway, it's not very long and you can check it out at

http://www.twincities.com/walters

it's the article titled, "Taylor: Garnett wants to stay with Timberwolves"  (I tried a direct link but a twincities registration page comes up)

is Walters a legit source? it says "last updated on 7/17/07" so is this just an old article that was recently added to or something? and does this mean we're keeping Wright?

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

Hopefully this is a reliable source
As great a player KG is, I really don't think it is worth giving up nearly half of our team for an All-Star and two crappy contracts(Hudson/Hassell/Jaric/Madsen).
If KG or Baron have injury problems next season, one of them may easily opt out or even if they sign on, we will only have KG until 2010 at latest. I hope he stays where he is or goes to Chicago or somewhere else in the east for our sake.

i agree
completely. KG is not worth it at his price, the cost of AB, and the crap contracts the warriors would be getting back. Plus i think that if Mullin makes a move to get KG, he'd be Grossly Overpaying.

draft night & KG
interesting bits and pieces woven together by TK about what may have gone down (wrong) on draft night between GSW, Char & Minn.:

twisted
man! that's got better plot twists than most Hollywood screenplays lol

a couple excerpts stood out for me:

The word-of-mouth coalesces on this part: Charlotte wasn't sure what to do when it got down to picking time for the No. 8 selection...

that's just flat out funny!  I imagine it was something like that scene from "Aliens" when most the Space Marines get wiped out and the few survivors are trying to regroup then Hudson loses it, "What the F** are we gonna do now,HUH!? We're F##'d we're SCREWED!! GAME OVER MAN, GAME OVER!!!"
* Heading into the start of the draft, Charlotte had a pre-existing agreement with Mullin to select Brandan Wright (or Yi Jianlian, Mike Conley Jr., Corey Brewer, Jeff Green or any of the Obvious Top Three Guys) then trade his rights for Richardson. That's the absolute confirmed truth
Damn. JRich was out no matter what; sucks but what can ya do
It's possible that NONE of this is true, that the Warriors and Timberwolves never inched super-close to a KG deal and that Charlotte always knew it should take Wright and that the Warriors are blissfully happy it turned out like this

Always good to step away from it all and just play whatever hand we've got come opening night

It's a good story
for sure.  I'm thinking Kawakami's scenario is a little like Rashamon.  The truth lies somewhere within the combined recollection of the event.

But what seems most likely true is that the deal came close to going down - and the Richardson/Wright/trade doesn't happen unless the KG deal was a possability.  Which leads me to believe that the Warriors will continue to pursue the deal, whether it ever comes off or not.

I also believe that KG will get dealt to somebody, no matter what the owner or Garnett's teammates say.  As many bad decisions as the Wolves have made in recent years, the downside of not dealing him this season (preferably beforehand) is too much even for these fools to ignore.

And there are other KG deals out there as well.  Check out this possible scenario:

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?players=2761~687~981~2748~3002~617~261~387&tea ms=16~16~16~16~16~2~13~13

Wouldn't that be horrible if the Lakers ended up with Garnett?  But it could happen, as there are a lot of possibilities out there.  It may mean that the Warriors will have to sweeten their offer.

This is upsetting
And to make matters worse Wright isn't even playing.  If he showed up and played well in the summer league, Minnesota may have been interested in acquiring him.  Oh well.  One big step backwards that will hopefully result in a big step forward in a few years.

I wouldn't say the KG bubble is popped
just yet; there's definitely been enough convincing arguments why it could still happen

who knows... maybe Taylor's been taking "smoke screen" lessons from Mullin and Nellie?

Another thing....
Why don't GMs just use their cellphones when regular phones aren't working and they need to communicate ASAP?  Why not email?  I'm sure they were all around a computer with internet access at that time.  An inability to reach the other party seems highly unlikely for the cause of not gettting a deal done.

exactly
and that's why i don't believe the story. there's plenty of other ways to get in touch with someone if a landline goes down, especially in such a crucial situation.

Kawakami has a great imagination and i think once again he's letting it run wild.

Fuel to the Fire
I have it on great authority that the Warriors were played and am working on learning more about what went down that night.

Cuban.
I wouldn't have been surprised if the truck that damaged the Bay Bridge ramp was owned by Cuban Industries, and I wouldn't be surprised if he owned the telecomm company under contract with the NBA offices.

Wow
Now this is starting to sound like a Law & Order case.

I'm still hoping the KG movement is at least on life support. There has to be a reason why the Warriors allegedly never scouted Wright.

MAybe because they did their HW before hand.
He was a top talent coming into college so i'm pretty sure he's been on every team's radar. Just because a team doesn't work a guy out before the draft does not mean they don't know jack S*** about the guy. Take every thing with a grain of salt though guys. Take it easy.

To clarify -
I'll just go a bit farther and just tell you what I know.

I believe the Warriors thought they had a better chance at making this happen than they actually did. I hear that the Wolves strung them along "like cruel a hot girl dating a nerd" - exact words from a high-up source. This guy knows things because some say he's the most active decision-maker in the league. I beat him in a round of golf on Sunday. He sucks at golf.

In my estimation, there was no miscommunication between the parties involved, just overzealousness on what it would take on the part of the Warriors. My guess is that they wanted the BPA in hopes of making something work and are now suffering the pratfall of realizing it wasn't enough.

Also, I'll learn more about this KG stuff as it comes along, but I'm not going to chase it like Kawakami is. Sorry, guys, but honestly, KG is a mirage I'm not willing to hunt down anymore. I did it for two years here in LA (to the Lakers) and there's too much misinformation out there to really learn the truth. It is like trying to learn about Rick James - Charlie Murphy is out there with some great stories, but how many are true?

Dark - o
... when Nelson had turned sights on acquiring Darko, and failed, it sure seemed that KG was already in his rearview mirror. That said, there's nothing preventing a trade, other than the jilted suitor's ego I suppose. Nonetheless, GFINers will have to wait - we can't expect to go further than last year with the roster as it's shaping up now ... there's always the Feb deadline, look at what we pulled off last time ...

Pree...
I heard that the Warriors had a deal in place with the Celtics on draft night...it was a J Rich, Monta and Harrington for Paul Pierce and the #5 (Yi).  The deal was almost consummated until Presti agreed to the Allen trade.  Any truth to that story?

by JimBarnett2KevinGarnett on Jul 18, 2007 12:42 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I haven't heard that
But just because I haven't heard it doesn't mean that it isn't true.

Makes little sense for the Celtics to take Harrington back when they're so ecstatic with Al Jefferson's development. It makes sense that they could want J-Rich and Monta, but they'd have a GLUT of guards to deal with.

At the end of the day, they'd be really poorly constructed. So I guess it makes sense that Ainge would consider it?

by pree on Jul 18, 2007 1:42 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

is there any chance that
The Warriors have looked into trading for either Udonis Haslem or Gerald Green? I'd like to see what they could bring to the Warriors in a run and gun, nellieball team. I think these guys could really prosper in an open system and with Nellie of course playing to their strengths.

I doubt a sign and trade with Pietrus for Haslem would be enough. But maybe if the Heat believe Wayne Simien is ready to contribute and the looming luzary tax is enough for them to shed payroll. The Dubz add a 2nd round pick and voila! maybe we have something cooking or...maybe not.

As for Gerald Green i'm betting that Ainge would atleast like to keep him around. But with Pierce, Allen, and well the other Allen in front of him at the wing spots, where does Gerald find PT? I know you didn't think there was much to the Sarunas to Boston deal, but is it conceivable that the Celts buy on a package of Sarunas and POB for Telfair and Green? I don't know if Telfair has pathced things up with the organization (although he looked pretty happy in SL besides Ainge). Sorry for the randomness of my thoughts. thanks.

More water on the KG campfire?
For what it's worth, there's an article in the Minnesota Star Tribune (www.startribune.com) dated 7/17/07 by Kent Youngblood titled, "Wolves: Taylor says Garnett likes teacher's role"  (sorry; a registration page keeps popping up when I tried to add a direct link)

some notable excerpts:

"I thought he might say, 'Well, if you're going younger, I guess I don't want to play here,' " Taylor recalled Tuesday. "But he said, 'I'd be a good teacher. Guys taught me and helped me. I'd like to do that.' "

Taylor, who returned over the weekend, talked about a range of subjects Tuesday, including the team's decision to field offers for Garnett before the June 28 NBA draft. He admitted Boston was the Wolves' most serious trading partner. And while not ruling out a Garnett trade, Taylor said the team is now focused on altering its roster in other ways.

But a trade of Garnett?

"Do I think it's going to happen? No," Taylor said. "Do we feel we have to do one? No. Are we willing to live with what we have, with Kevin and making some minor changes? Yes. But if a team came along, if we saw the right thing and it made sense? Maybe. But I don't see it."

Sounds like the KG fire is down to embers; interesting also about Celtics being the most "serious trading partner"

embers
may be enough - check out Matt Steinz piece about GSW moves in the past during August

http://www.examiner.com/a-833873~Steinmetz__Mullin_s_still_hard_on_the_job.html

who knows, summer's not over, the fat lady hasn't sung (yet)

I'm still skeptical Nelson even comes back if our roster isn't revised further by training camp to at least give him a chance of matching much less bettering a second round playoff run ...
