Gerald Wallace? 25% of the League is Chasing Him

Lots of teams could use a dynamic 6-7 wing player who can average 18 points on 50% shooting, collect 7 boards, 2 steals, and 2 blocks. He'll cost some team a ton of money, likely around 10+ million per year. Is he worth it? From the numbers he put up in the last 4 months of the season, I'd say yes. Chad Ford has him ranked as the 3rd best free agent out there behind Rashard Lewis and Chauncey Billups. Honestly, I think he's the top free agent available. He can do almost everything, score, rebound, and defend. Here's what Chad Ford had to say.
Michael Jordan says he wants to keep him in Charlotte, but we'll have to wait and see how open owner Bob Johnson's wallet is going to be now that he's taken on the contract of Jason Richardson. Don't forget, the Bobcats also have to offer an extension to Emeka Okafor.

But there are a couple things I'm worried about. First, Chad Ford says he played exceptionally well for the final 45 games, the season is 82 games long. Where was he for the first half of the season? His stats last year show that he can play well across an entire season, but he also wasn't earning a large paycheck. Is the Gerald Wallace teams will play for the guy who played the first 37 games last season or the guy who played the final 45 games? It reminds me of Erick Dampier's contract year where he looked like he could become a future All-Star if he continued to improve. Everyone knew he was playing for money, but I'm not sure about Wallace. I think he'll continue to improve, he just has to become consistent game in and game out. But at just 25, he's worth a gamble for a contending team.
I'm no cap exptert, but the second red flag for me in handing him a large deal is what happens with Andris and Monta. If we use all the cap space on Wallace, these two also need to be extended or we risk losing them. To me, if we get a talent like Wallace, I don't mind losing Monta. But I'm against signing Wallace at the cost of losing Biedrins in a year. He's a valuable commodity and we'll have nobody who can play in the paint. Maybe this is all a moot point and Cohan will pony up the bucks and go over the cap for a shot at a title, but I doubt it.
So what does it take to get Gerald Wallace? I'm not sure, but there are 8 teams in pursuit and that will drive the price through the roof.
Outside of the Warriors, if Dallas gets him, look out. They'll have two lock down defenders in Josh Howard and Gerald Wallace to really give the Spurs and Suns a run for their money. Let's just hope that if he doesn't go to the Warriors, he stays out East.
I know many on GSoM would love to have Gerald Wallace on the team, but at what cost? Were his final 45 games of the season an precursor of greater things to come or just a guy playing hard in his contract year? Let's say Wallace signs for nothing less than $10 mil per year, what do we do with our youngin' Monta and Biedrins? Cohan isn't going to pay a luxury tax, so these two might have to be shipped out. Is he worth it? I say go for it.

NO!
Also, I haven't seen him play much, but i heard he's a great defender. I guess it just seems weird that we would trade Jrich for another player of the similar calibre (but different skill sets).

S&T
Maybe so. Maybe Dream Teammates Mullin and Jordan planned it out this way: GS sends JRich to the Cats for the #8, and then sends Monta + $10 trade exception for Wallace? Hell, the Cats already axed Brevin Knight, so they're suddenly in the market for a backup PG. Another player will have to be involved, as the $10 mil exception can't be combined with another player in a trade, but maybe Monta is traded for 2nd rounder Davidson? This is all baseless theorizing, but Mullin will have to get a little creative if Wallace is the target. And it sounds like MJ wants to keep him anyway.

Sign and Trades:
Offhand, I can't remember a sign and trade where the old team got real talent (at least at the time- wierd stuff always happens like Ben Wallace becoming a stud when he was merely a good roleplayer before
the Grant Hill trade). if anyone remembers trades where this wasn't the case, please share.
Bringing in Wallace would certainly be a better long-term move than Garnett. While he's no where the talent of KG, he'll be great longer and wouldn't be nearly the salary anchor.
For Ellis and Biedrins...Ellis would most certainly have to be traded since Cohan will not go over the luxury tax cap. I think the best plan would be to trade Ellis for a top draft pick next year (Sacramento's pick looks really juicy).
Going into the offseason, we'd then have our first rounder, the Ellis-trade first rounder, and Adonal Foyle, a $9M expiring contract (no one's picking up his team option). That should be more than enough to trade into the top 5, where talents like Derrick Rose (6'3, power PG like Baron, Memphis) and O.J. Mayo (6'5 mini-Lebron, USC) will likely go.
A couple things about Wallace:
He's about the opposite of Richardson.
Wallace doesn't have much of a jumper and doesn't get his points from the perimeter. All his scoring is moving off ball, slashing to the basket, and off putbacks and transition buckets. He doesn't have 3 point range.
While he's a spectacular weakside shotblocker and steals guy, I don't know if he's necessarily a lockdown type individual defender like Prince, Bowen, and Artest...but in Nelson-style basketball, freakshow team defenders are probably more valuable.
At 6'7, he can spot minutes at PF as well.
I haven't heard anything on his passing, but I know he also isn't a individual ball-handler that will create himself.
On the upside, he's only 24, so he has years of production ahead of him.
Regarding his second-half production...sure, he did better later in the season, but this isn't really his only season as a stud. His '05-'06 was actually better than last year by PER (21 v 19).
Unfortunately, he can't shoot FT's either.
In sum, I think he's Michael Pietrus who has figured out how to use his skills (which says alot).

Trade Monta later?
I like your plan. But could we trade Monta next season, prior to the draft? Is that even allowed, trading free agents-to-be during the offseason but prior to July 1st when they actually become free? I can't remember that ever having happened, though I suppose they could just do a S&T next summer themselves, grabbing an exception and maybe a low draft pick in return.
by ffgolden on Jul 2, 2007 3:50 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
maybe
I'd imagine that letting actually walk at a FA would cause alot of uproar (not to mention wasting a trade chip).
Also, trading for draft picks...it's alot easier to get a team to deal away a draft pick a year in advance, isn't it? Once prospects become more solidified and teams know more certainly where they'll pick, the price for them will probably go up.
Sacramento we know will suck next year.
Atlanta got better, but not enough.
Philadelphia won't be better anytime soon.
Miami, I expect, is gonna fall hard.
I wouldn't mind dealing Ellis to any of those teams for their 2008 first rounder, unprotected when the draft class is so PG heavy.

Wallace would be insane on the Warriors
I doubt the Bobcats would let their starting SF just walk away either, trading for JRich shows they want to be a competitive team now and Morrison just isn't ready to start at SF yet. Gerald Wallace has also already stated he wouldn't mind going back to Charlotte. The Warriors' plan may have just backfired a little because sending JRich to the Bobcats may have made them a more attractive bidder to Wallace now.
The only scenario I could see Wallace not being a Bobcat next year is if they choose to pursue Lewis instead. Otherwise, I can't see them getting outbid for Wallace when they have the most money to spend and no other SF options out there.

Okafor
Walter Hermann will also need an extension, and they need an other big.
So it's not like they can throw that much money at Gerald Wallace without future ramifications. They certainly could, but it would hurt them in other ways.
Thus far they've been pretty patient and prudent with their money, the only dumb move I'd point out is using a first round draft pick on the worst forward in the league, Adam Morrison.
Additionaly, their first rounder this year, Jared Dudley, is very possibly a replacement for Wallace at the 3, at least as part of a rotation.

And that PF/C would be?
Wallace has to agree to a sign and trade and it's in his interest to block deals that will result in the team he's going to giving up large amounts of talent to get him if he's interested in winning.

Im Sorry But..
Nelson did it.
AND THEN he had the nerve to try and sue Nelson out of some money..what a rich jerk...after Cuban had that record season, he thought it was going to be his year. We shattered his little dream. After the series, instead of congradulating Nellie and taking it on the chin like a man, he folded his arms and pouted like a child. He cried himself to sleep like a little bitch. He moaned and wailed, hanging all over Dirk's shoulder.
The fact that he is STILL not letting this go, and trying to build ammunition against a great guy like Nellie, shows how poor a character he really is. His integrity is a joke, and I hope this all comes back to haunt him and his children's children's children! He needs to go.

understand where you're coming from, but
and, after 14 or so years, we as fans may as well be resigned to the fact cohan's going to be the owner. it could be worse, see hawks, grizz, clips, bobcats.
besides, most owners are pretty much the same.

Lets do it!
I know that it would put us in the same financial problem we were in before trading JRich but that doesn't scare me. Don't forget we still have half the season to decide who we are going to keep. If it looks like we would rather have money to resign Monta than having wallace around I'm sure we would have no problem dumping him for a expiring contract at the trade deadline. I love Monta but I think if i had to choose I would probably take Wallace. If I'm wrong and he comes out blazing this year and proves he is worth building around (and sacrificing other talent to keep) I'm sure we could find a way to dump some salary (and talent).
The one thing I didn't mention is AB. I think keeping him is Priority #1. I wouldn't do a deal for KG or Wallace if it means putting ourselves in a position where we would lose Monta and Andris (which it could). From the looks of it Andris is the sticking point in the proposed KG deal, and if we sacrifice our chance at KG to keep him and then loose him a year later because we can't pay him that is flat out foolish. I don't follow the cap and salary figures that closely but I think that if we can find a way to get Wallace and keep AB we have to make that move. If it means losing AB for sure then I'd probably pass.

Gerald Wallace and Stephen Jackson
That being said, if we acquire Wallace, how is our lineup going to look like? I believe that both Wallace and Jackson are too slow to be playing SG in a Nellieball fashion. Also, I'm sure if either can play the PF position as well. Sure, SJax was assigned to do it against Dirk in the playoffs, but what about against traditional post PFs?

Blitz
1.Weak side shot blocking - Our team relies on help defense, constantly switching and rotating. Wallace covers alot of ground quickly and gets most of his blocks from the weak side.
- Help defense - He reads passing lanes like a book. With Baron and Jackson sapping offenses with their double teams, Wallace would be lethal in the passing lanes. He is also strong enough to front a PF, and athletic enough to deflect inside lobs.
- Defense = High Score - Wallace, Davis, Jackson. This team would cause more turnovers than any other in the league. A stick and move defense that leads to lay ups and dunks on the other end.
- Toughness - Wallace seemingly never gets tired. He will go all out on the boards and wear the other team down. We would not see us be outhustled on the glass anymore.
- Janatorial duties - He would be our clean up man. Wallace loves the dirty work, and he would bring back that Charlie Hustle style that J-Rich brought to us every night. Not to mention some highlight dunks on the FB.
by BlueNgoldBlood on Jul 3, 2007 6:55 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I mean
- I don't know if they can get boards over PFs
- I don't know if they can stop PFs in the post
It's true that most teams only have one post offensive threat, but what happens if we go against the Jazz again?

rebounding
Jackson isn't even an adequate rebounder as a 2 or a 3.
If they're in the same mold physically, why can't Jackson rebound at any position consistently?

all your points
but, i would have added a number six and that is he absolutely will thrive in a running game because he is very fast and will get dunks at will in the open court. him and josh smith would dominate on the dubs gettin out on the break and flying in their throwing it down.
