Mullin's current smokescreen

Our Window is very narrow, indeed perhaps only another couple weeks.

A few factors are coalescing, and should be crystal clear in 14 days. Apologies to those who might think this diary "repeats" too much information, but the pieces fit in a way I haven't read here on GSoM or anywhere else yet.

Briefly, it's now very clear to most of us that BWright is part of a larger strategy in a potential trade (to get KG?), and/or be part of a future GS core of young, talented players. He can be used well in either scenario.

Nelson asked for time to consider whether he returns next season. First he set the date at July 1st, then it became July 15th. He set very specific dates, why he even brought it up publicly is not 100% clear, unless he was sending a message to someone (Cohan?). His omnipresence was felt throughout the draft and Richardson trade, so clearly he's hardly disinterested or disengaged. And Mullin dismissed the possibility that Nelson would not return.

That's the smokescreen.

Here's what Mullin is hiding: Nelson probably will not return, and if he does he probably will not be coaching BWright, Monta, and AB together.

It's safe to assume Nelson is not holding out or threatening to walk away for money. He earned $1m bonus just for reaching the playoffs (schooling the Mavs was icing on the cake and the fact that Cuban is still fuming is delicious!).  The only motivation Nelson has to coach now is to reach the championship as a coach, he's done everything else.

July is FA time, and specifically July 11th the official salary cap for 07-08 will be set: it went up $3.6m last season and can be expected to step up a similar amount to about $57m. Plus teams will also have two exemptions ($5.5m & $1.8m) before the dreaded luxury tax kicks in. (http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/story/6978878).

We've all read on GSoM the Richardson trade also netted the Ws a huge year-long exemption. Nelson and Mullin are working on using all those, and they are not scheming to construct a long-range plan of building through youth. They are in full go-for-it-all-right-now mode. Either through a big trade or a series of significant acquisitions, they are going to construct the best roster to win right now.  Any big trade will mean one or more of the young guns are on their way out for talented veterans coming in. Belinelli is the replacement for Barnes/MP, not JRich. There are bigger fish to catch than even BWright in the next two weeks. Nelson only comes back for a chance at the ring, he doesn't come back for another "hope we make the playoffs again" season or worse, to "teach the kids how to play" and miss the playoffs. The fact that KG is available has only added fuel to this fire.

Mullin dispassionately dismissed the possibility that Nelson won't be back so as not to let on that the clock is ticking on the Ws to make a deal, to try to keep the pressure off and get the best deal(s) possible. But Nelson intentionally put that message in very specific terms, and the window of opportunity is actually very narrow. Mullin knows it, so does Cohan. And Mullin knows he needs Nelson to hang on to his own job. Hence, the pressure is on and he's going to roll the dice. He has little choice actually.

It's not for money, it's about the ring. Should be an interesting couple weeks.

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

I think you could be right about this stuff

yeah
and i think that you did a great job at taking in everything thats going on and i think this definately could be whats happening, i like your theories.  im not sure what i think of whether they should do it or not.  I really don't want to see any more of our guys go, but if we are a contender that would be sweet

Im shaking in my boots!
I think that this very well could be the answer.. how many more years is Nellie going to be around?

I'm sure hes only going to coach if he know he can put another ring next to his wedding ring because its lonely. Anyways that sucks... i was hoping to see Wright play with our jersey on and hell i even made the new rosters on NBA 2k7 already... lol hahaha

Any big trade will mean
"one or more of the young guns are on their way out for talented veterans coming in. Belinelli is the replacement for Barnes/MP, not JRich"

Belinelli is a skinny young rookie, how is replacing playoff tested Barnes or MP with him a wise move if we want to win next year? Seems like We'd of kept our most experience players and just added a new experienced bigman if that was the case?
The initial appearance is they just dumped jason's salary to save money, and their only plan is to pad cohan's bank account?  They probably know warriors fans are enablers so their risk of fan backlash at running off JRich was small? if that's the case the next shoe to drop is more likely  them signing Yi instead of  KG or other playoff tested player cause they have those  yuan $ signs in their eyes?
Anyway it's turned from an enjoyable off season to a frustrating one, from a minor tweak to a team we all liked to who knows what next year? I just can't believe these new players will be as effective or as likable as the crew we had last year?

by Skeptic con Urquell on Jul 2, 2007 12:25 AM PDT reply actions

money?
I suspect Nelson knows MP isn't worth the money he's going for, maybe Barnes too (remember they picked him up for peanuts, perhaps they think that's going to be easy again?)

Re Yi, check this out:

http://msn.foxsports.com/other/story/6982032

he'd did great - against a bunch of HS aged players, and his (non)comment about the Bucks would send shivers down the spine if I were a Milwakee fan!

Your hunch is either waaay off...
or right on the money. Guess time will tell, huh?

Only loophole I wonder about is, even with KG, or even KG plus some other valuable player, the Ws don't suddenly become instant favorites to win-it-all let alone the Western Conf; at best, it'd make them a definite force but surely not a lock, no?  An injury to KG, an injury to Baron and POP! Boom Dizzle goes Boom Fizzle

Regardless, nice analysis/breakdown and interesting read

Geoff Lepper
@cctimes wrote that it's all about money, so maybe I am waaaaay off (his "connections" are certainly better than mine!)

y'r right, even with KG (and Artest?! read below) their not a lock, but talent-wise no one is head and shoulders above them either ...

thanks for the comment

Ultimate GFIN
Assuming we are in all-out GFIN mode, I wonder if the final piece to championship puzzle might be on-again off-again GSoM trade bait Ron Artest. We know this:
  • He's available -- check that, like KG, he must be moved. Sac has made trading him their #1 offseason priority.
  • He's making very reasonable $$$ (2 years,$7.5M per) for what he provides.
  • Mullin and he have the St. John's connection and (I believe) a little friendship.
  • He'd obviously kill (probably literally) to come play Nellieball with Baron, Jax and KG
Getting him would just be a matter of holding back enough trade pieces to make Sac an acceptable offer. Sign/trade of MP3 would be ideal, but maybe not quite enough. Alternately, we keep Harrington out of the KG deal and ship him straight up for Ron-Ron. Their salaries are an exact match.

Baron
Jax
Artest
KG
Biedrins
---
with Barnes, Belinelli, Buki, and Boykins coming off the bench.

Obviously, no one's ever a lock, but it's impossible not to think that team would be right up there with SA as the two odds-on championship favorites. Not only is it championship-quality in terms of talent, but it would have the kind of defensive-intensity and mile-wide mean streak that makes teams especially suited to winning it all. I mean 3/4ths of the teams in the NBA would (mentally) have crapped their pants and run home to mommy before even getting on court against that starting 5.

Heck, even switch out Biedrins for Wright n the MN deal, if we have to, and it's still a championship contender.

Skeptic, tell me even you would allow that that team is better than the loveable bunch we had last week...

by Sleepy Freud on Jul 2, 2007 1:17 AM PDT reply actions

Edit.
You know, screw that "along with San Antonio" BS. We'd flat out be overwhelming favorites to win it all. KG is the only guy in the NBA who can man-up Tim Duncan without giving up a thing. And you can't tell me Baron, Jax, and Artest can't handle TP, Flopobili, and the rest of the Spurs little guys. Their daring forays into the lane would be met with extreme prejudice. That leaves AB to feast on Elson or whatever other slop SA has in the way of big men. Really, it's not even that close. Popovic would be on his knees begging old master Nellie for mercy.

"We'd flat out be overwhelming favorites
to win it all."  hahah!  spoken like a true Ws fan Sleepy ;)

but i agree, just reading that lineup makes me drool uncontrollably like some kinda Pavlovian experiment and no doubt that would be a force to be reckoned with unlike anything the bay area has ever witnessed

That is a monster team
One that could get tagged with the "New Bad Boys" of the West since the East coast version isn't as beastly anymore, in the same vein as the Washington Warriors/Warriors in the East tagline.

The only thing is not imploding before getting to the Playoffs.

Winning is the best chemistry builder though so as long as they keep winning they'll be good to go. And winning also keeps old NellieBelly from being BeerBelly as were the reports last season of drinking during the drought of wins.

And then we get to watch as the egos clash preferably after the championship is won, and the team go wayside on their separate ways. This is something the championship caliber teams' fans are lucky enough to deal with and we haven't gotten a taste of that in quite some time.

Yeah, I'm a broken record
Does anyone here, other than Skeptic, remember records?

OK, one more reason to think "GFIN," in addition to Baron and Nellie's closing windows of opportunity, and the freak availability of KG and Artest: there are no real dynasties out there right now. Dallas can be handled (obviously), Phoenix is soft defensively, SA is built on one 31 y.o. superstar, some decent role players, and "good fundamentals." The East is least, and Portland's dynasty is three years off, if it ever materializes.

Meanwhile, we've got a crazy GM, an old/crazy coach, an unbelievably charismatic leader with the clout to attract top talent, a rabid fanbase drunk off its first taste of playoffs in ages, and tons of young talent to make both these deals happen. It's a friggin perfect storm.

OK, time to get off GSoM and take a cold shower...

by Sleepy Freud on Jul 2, 2007 2:24 AM PDT up reply actions

you know....
I think KG AND Artest would actually work and....god forbid....it actually seems like something Mullin and Nellie would do....holy crap

KG may be the only person on earth intense enough to strike the fear of god into Artest.  I could see Artest staying in line as long as KG's around (ala Jordan's relationship with Rodman).

I think you're right...this may be the perfect storm....

by sadleavy on Jul 2, 2007 6:33 AM PDT up reply actions

Thanks for not having me committed
Back to reality: the problem with the extreme GFIN makeover is of course that Minnesota could put the kibosh on the whole thing by dealing KG elsewhere; or Sacramento could be dead-set against trading Artest to their NoCal rivals. But I do wonder if the little "lull" we're experiencing now might not be Mullin working furiously behind the scenes to make a couple of separate deals coalesce.

As a side note: If I Google "Ron Artest" and click "news," two of the top three "stories" are actually comments from this site. Is that b/c my Google is tailored to my personal surfing history, or b/c Artest is discussed more here than anywhere else? The endless mysteries of the internet...

Wurd (as coma would say) When I visit sacto the folks over there say they want Barnes back so he's the key to getting ron-ron.
Yeah Sleepy I've still got a few records out in my workshop and put them on the platter ocassionally, playin thru a pair of old JBL 100s they still sound sweet.

It's gonna take giving up ...
AB and negotiating with KG:
Garnett in Oakland is an even worse nightmare for the Lakers. The Suns were already above them. With KG, the Warriors would be too.

The Warriors jumped in with both feet on draft day, trading popular Jason Richardson to Charlotte for young Brandan Wright, whom they hadn't even worked out.

With Minnesota seeking prospects, the Warriors are now offering Wright, Monta Ellis and Patrick O'Bryant.

Minnesota is asking for Andris Biedrins. Golden State is offering Al Harrington instead and may also insist that Garnett waive his $6.5-million trade kicker, so it's not done yet.
