Rumor: Warriors Interested in Morris Peterson

Not sure why he's got toilet paper on him

The Warriors are trying to make some big moves this year in free agency. In addition to pursuing Gerald Wallace and Mikki Moore, they're going after Morris Peterson.

The Utah Jazz, Golden State Warriors, New Orleans Hornets, Miami Heat and Sacramento Kings have all expressed interest in Peterson.
But there's a problem in the Warriors going after Mo Pete, he wants to start. I wouldn't say that he can't start on this team, but he certainly isn't guaranteed a starting spot on the Warriors. He'll have to beat out Monta Ellis which he could potentially do if he can return to his'05-'06 form.
Playing time also is important to Peterson, said the source. Peterson wants to become a starter or get significant playing time. He lost his starting spot this past season.

I'd stay away from Mo Pete if he wants to start. If he's okay with being the 6th man, then I'd sign him, but only if Matt Barnes prices himself out of the Warriors' range. He could fill a valuable role as a shooter off the bench, but I have a feeling he peaked 2 seasons ago.

Should the Warriors sign Mo Pete to the MLE? Would you take him over Barnes?

uh
cool i guess. i traded for him in nba 2k7 cuz hes a good 3 point shooter in the game

and im guessing the toilet paper might be a sling for an arm injury or something which is possibly a joke cuz it says "raptors ironman" at the bottom of it.

no
i would rather have ellis, bellinelli, and barnes.

i would also rather have pietrus over mo pete b/c pietrus is more athletic and is a better defender

by thewarriorsrule on Jul 3, 2007 1:40 PM PDT reply actions

barnes first
let's focus on getting him back first.  i would let pietrus go.

Barnes > Morris Peterson
Statistically Barnes had a better season as well.  Throw in the facts that Mo Pete is demanding starter minutes, Barnes likes playing in GS and won't mind coming off the bench, it's an easy choice.

barnes first
totally agree Barnes actually plays D . mo pete doesn't at all. we need to sign Barnes for sure with jay rich gone he and Baron are the heart of this team , the mohawk in the playoffs is worth 5 mill per . Barnes is a Warrior no pun intended

Ideally
We could pick up Mo Pete in a S&T, sending Jasikevicius in return. I'd say a 2-3 year deal at about $4 mil per at the most. Barnes is worth more on his passion alone, so if the S&T can't be done and we're paying with the MLE, Barnes is more deserving. But having another 3-point shooter definitely won't hurt, and Jasi isn't doing anything for us.

On his defense, here's what Hollinger says:

Defensively, Peterson is one of the few competent Raptors. Among backcourt players, only Raja Bell and Derek Fisher are better at taking charges, and at 6-7 his size allows him to play scorers at both perimeter spots. However, he doesn't have the outstanding quickness of a first-rate defensive stopper and he isn't particularly strong.
. That was written prior to the '06-'07 season though, and he didn't have a great year last year. And again, Hollinger often requires grains of salt to be taken for his word. I honestly have never been left with much of an impression after watching him.

If he's ok with competing for a starting spot with Monta, sounds good to me. If he demands one, I think the Jazz are his only possible destination.

S&T w/ Sarunas
I think I would do that deal. Of course that doesn't leave us with any depth at PG but with everything so up in the air right now I'm sure the Ws front office are looking into just about everything.

by olympicmike on Jul 3, 2007 3:51 PM PDT up reply actions

id rather keep what we got
lets see if they mesh well together, and then if they dont im sury we can make another 8 man deal.

Mo Pete, Mo Problems...
The guys isn't that great to begin with, and his dumb ass wants starter minutes. The dude couldn't even crack the Rapt's starting 5 and that's after they signed a guy from a foreign team that played them in the pre-season (Anthony Parker, ya know his sister's a better dunker that him, ya that guy).

Na, what the warriors need to do is bring back Barnes. That is unless they want to pick an athletic 5 that just go freed from his restricted FA status. That's right DARKO is free for the taking and I'm sure he'd thrive in Nellie's system.

I am so happy to see so many no's here already
Because my immediate reaction was oh hell no.  Peterson is inconsistent and thinks he is better than he is.  There also may be locker room issues there.  Forget it.  If we lose Barnes for this guy...

by walkerp on Jul 3, 2007 4:58 PM PDT reply actions

No way
He'd be too expensive for a SG who's be buried on the depth chart. And he doesn't help us get bigger at the SF position, so what good is he?

I don't want them to squander that $10 million exception on anyone less than Gerald Wallace. And even he doesn't make me too excited.

Where
did u hear Mikki Moore was being pursued by the Warriors? I always liked his game and his hustle. Wouldn't mind giving him 3-4 mil/year

by DaAzNJRiCh on Jul 3, 2007 5:50 PM PDT reply actions

No Mo...LOL
Since Mo Pete wanna start, he is certainly not welcome to play with us. We need more bench depth to replace the inevitable departures of our super bench players. If he was willing to take a 6th man or 7th man role, then yes sign him. But I would like to view other options in the free agent market.

by Phil T28 on Jul 3, 2007 6:14 PM PDT reply actions

Mo: worst kind of free agent signing
Overrated, starting his career decline, still thinks of himself as a starter and wants to get paid. Andres Nocioni, who will probably command about the same amount, is a much better player. Matt Barnes, too -- and he gets bonus poins for being tough, clutch, and "One of the Eight."

Ignoring $$$, my order of wing players would go Wallace, Nocioni, Barnes. But I'm worried hey might all be too expensive.

LOL
at that Mo Pete figurine...it depicts him grabbing a rebound??!! LOL was that one of the 5 he grabbed all season? Should show him chucking up at 3pter from half court that's all he is good for. PASS.

Let's Go Oakland! Gas, Brake, Dip.

order
Barnes>Peterson>Pietrus

I doubt Peterson gets a starting job anywhere.

Peterson does the same things Pietrus does, but trading athleticism for veteran savvy.

None of those guys is worth the full MLE, therefore we shouldn't sign any of them. I don't want 3-4 years of them at around $6M hogging up that cap space.

One name that might be had for say, half the MLE:
James Posey. Gets no pub, and probably won't draw any interest except from Miami, so there'll be no competition.

This is actually FA season full of small forwards (in no order):

Gerald Wallace
Grant Hill
Desmond Mason
Devean George
DeMarr Johnson
Dahtay Jones
James Singleton
Jumaine Jones
Matt Carrol (better than Kapono cuz he gets to the line)
Pietrus
Posey
Barnes
Ruben Patterson
Nocioni (bulls will match any offer)

Just wait the FA season out and pick up the leftover ones, there's bound to be one that's available for about half the MLE when all's said and done.

just off the top of my head

would look nice in a Nellie gameplan.

Let's Go Oakland! Gas, Brake, Dip.

No Mo' Pete
I would rather re-sign Macramento Barnes. Just imagine how well he'll play for another full season for us? This time, he'll have an even bigger role on the team. More money should help motivate Barnes more and make that extra push to a higher seed in the playoffs. Mo-Pete would have to wanna sign somewhere else if he wanna play more minutes or even start. He did alright with the Raptors as a bench player and might be buried in our 8-man rotation.
