Wright Sitting out Summer League

Janny Hu of SF Gate is live in Las Vegas covering the NBA Summer League. She's got our first bit of disappointing info regarding one of the newest Warriors.

Brandan Wright, the Warriors' top draft pick, is going to miss part (and possibly all) of summer league. Though Wright was cleared to practice last night after the Jason Richardson trade went through, he's being held out due to a strained right hip flexor. The Warriors are calling it a precautionary move and don't know when he'll be ready to practice or play.

Wright says the injury dates back to April, and that after grinding through his pre-draft workouts, the best move was to let himself heal. This isn't going to quell any trade rumors, of course, but Wright also told me he signed his rookie contract last night, so whatever happens, he's at least a Warrior for the next 30 days.

I didn't hear about this injury before, so apparently it should be a minor thing. It would have been great to see how he did in the Summer League against the rookies and random scrubs, but I guess we won't have that chance. Even though he says he might play, I doubt he will. He needs to get to 100% before training camp begins so he can start his rookie season off right.

Let's just hope this is a minor injury that doesn't affect him later on in his career and that he isn't injury prone. The last thing we need on this team is another guy who misses 20-30 games a year.

This means one important thing...more time for Notorious POB! Okay maybe not, but I hope we get something out of him this year. At least let him sit on the end of the bench and pick up solid veteran tips from Adonal Foyle, things like how to throw a towel to a player coming off the court, when to cheer, and most importantly, how to pass out Gatorade cups so nothing spills.

Also check out Summatime in the Warriors Land- But We Don't Got Them DOS! for more on the Warriors Summer League roster.

Ditto. I didn't watch UNC over the last year. I've heard people question this kid's heart. Thoughts from anyone who watched him?

Not that it really means anything, but teams at time throw some smoke screens out there when something goin down....with all the trade rumors I've been hearing, the first thing I thought was "TRADE"....just an Idea...but we'll see...I'd hate to think this guy was injured even before we picked him up.

this is great news actually
it means that a trade agreement involving wright has most likely been put in place and we don't want to run the risk of injuring BW and messing it up.

is that you KG?!

I thought you couldn't trade Rooks for a while after signing them? Or are you just saying that the trade's been put on hold until that deadline passes?

just read the blog
and, although its still (very) early, bellinelli sure sounds good. i imagine him as a player as sort of a hybrid ginobli/nocioni/varejo i.e. athletic, explosive, and valuable, though not in the sense of a star

Anyone having luck watching the live web broadcasts of the summer league games so far?  I keep getting a message saying that I can't get access because I am out of the area...

You know ..
The Warriors would have known about this hip thing like the other teams did .. but they didn't work the kid out

by pree on Jul 7, 2007 4:08 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

yeah, but would it have mattered?
I mean, you think they wouldn't have done the trade if they knew he had a strained hip? I kinda doubt it. That's a very minor injury...it's like saying you wouldn't draft a guy because he had a sprained ankle.

Let's Go Oakland! Gas, Brake, Dip.

by OaktownFunk on Jul 7, 2007 10:43 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

True
I wonder though if teams passed on it because of something bigger than it just be a flexor and it being more serious. Or maybe it was his braces.

by pree on Jul 7, 2007 12:49 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

hmm
if that's the case and it is something more serious, then god help us. The w's would have just traded the face of the franchise for a brittle 20 yr old that is already broken down and hasn't even played a game yet. By the way...hasn't it been like 2 weeks since the draft? Shouldn't that "little hip soreness" be gone in that time? Hasn't he been resting since a day or so before the draft? This just smells of trade to me.

Let's Go Oakland! Gas, Brake, Dip.

he played golf yesterday with Nellie before summer league practice..doesn't sound like a gimp to me :)

by OaktownFunk on Jul 7, 2007 2:40 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

could be....or not....
We really dont know how he got the hip soreness. I dont think him not playing in the summer league has anything to do at all with a possible trade. I think organization has probably communicated to Wright that they want him to be stronger come training camp. Wright is probably lifting weights every day trying to improve his strength. He could have gotten hurt trying to work out too hard. Who really knows.

BELINELLI...39 points...5-6 3pt. shooting...
Ive had a good feeling about him ever since I saw his profile on nbadraft.net about a year ago. I was hoping the Warriors would snag him and they did. Now, I just watched him play in a summer league game against the Hornets, and that kid can straight up play. I see some of Kobe's game in him, the way he plays out of triple threat, the way he drives hard using 1-2 dribbles and pulls up quickly and accurately. He squares his body and gets a lot of lift on his jumpshot, very similar to the way Bryant does when driving. He is very smart, both offensively and defensively.

On offense, I saw him execute a move I thought was very impressive for a player of his age. He caught the ball with his back to the basket at the top of the 3 pt line. The defender crowded him, so he pivoted and turned with the ball real low, threatening to drive. He bumped the defender with his shoulder to gain some space, and then used the space to jab step left, took one hard dribble right, and pulled up for a fadeaway 19 footer. Nothing but net.

He understands the game. He understands the simple things that make the difference between winning and losing.
On offense, he came off a screen and called for the ball. Instead they passed down low, and a Warrior began to post up, when Belinelli saw that his teammate had his man close to the basket and was most likely going to attempt a shot, He immediately began to back pedal towards the half court line, to get back on defense. Sure enough, the shot was attempted, but missed. The Hornets started a fastbreak going the other way. Belinelli was the only man on defense.

You can watch the summer league games using NBA broadband. Check him out and say what you think of him. Azuibuke looked very good as well. Another player that caught my eye was Pierre Pierce. Look.

Belinellli
You really cant debut much better than that. Very encouraging after losing Jrich who was not much more
than a jump shooter.

by realtalk on Jul 7, 2007 3:41 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

yes...
But I wouldnt go as far as to say Jason was not much more than a jumpshooter. He was a scorer. Like Jamison, he just found a way to score. His competitive drive and physical abilities allowed him to score high or low. Remember when he was drafted, experts said that he lacked a jumpshot and was questioned if he would improve. He entered the league being considered a poor shooter and still managed to be in the top 15 in scoring 4 years later.

Jason is a great player.

QUESTION
Would any of you trade Monta Ellis, Al Harrington, and Patrick O'Bryant for Andre Iguodala, Steven Hunter, and Joe Smith?

We get the best player in the deal
Usually the mark of a good trade. Any reason to think Philly's remotely interested in giving him up?

by Sleepy Freud on Jul 7, 2007 6:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

well...
Igoudala has 1 more year left on his contract as does Ellis. I am not sure how thrilled Andre is to be a 76er, or if he has displayed any willingness to re-sign with the team. Also, I think Philly is pretty high on Rodney Carney, who in my opinion, is a better 2 than a 3. If Philadelphia is looking to rebuild, I think they would be interested in acquiring a talent/youth in Ellis, along with a skilled vet like Harrington. We could also unload O'Bryant, or Sarunas if Philly is interested. What do you think?

by BlueNgoldBlood on Jul 7, 2007 7:37 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not much incentive
They'd really have to think that Iggy wasn't going to stick around, because he's young, part of their rebuilding effort right now.  He'lll be 24 right now.  Unless he's threatening to leave no matter what, I don't see that Ellis is a better guy to try to build around. Philly is rebuilding.  Why would they give up on a player like Iggy, who's shown so far he's better than Ellis to get 2 years younger but to acquire a guy who may not have a natural NBA position and doesn't do as much across the board as Iggy at this point?

If Philly is high enough on Carney to try to move Iggy, they've got some significant problems.

(And for what it's worth, Joe Smith is of course no longer under contract, so that sort of trade involves yet another "we could get him to sign-a-trade" that seems to view it as something easy to pull off, as if every player out there is just itching to accommodate for sake of making a trade work.)

by jae on Jul 7, 2007 8:07 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

yes, your right
Ive just really been thinking... If Belinelli and Azubuike step up to become NBA talents for the Warriors, then what will we do with our gaurd situation? Who becomes expendable?
