Signings: Perovik Signed Wed. /Croshere - today

I posted this under a different diary, but probably needs it own..

http://www.insidebayarea.com/sports/ci_6528114

"The Warriors will get no such break on their deal with the 7-2, 240-pound Perovic, who was selected 38th overall two summers ago and signed off Wednesday on his deal."

"Duffy said the contract "shows a commitment to (Perovic)." It's believed Perovic will receive approximately $5 million over three years, although $1 million of that will go toward Perovic's buyout from his European club, Partizan Belgrade. The total buyout was $1.5 million; the Warriors, per league regulations, are allowed to pick up only $500,000 of that tab."

Chroshere

"Ten-year veteran forward Austin Croshere was expected to sign with Golden State on Thursday afternoon, a team source said. And the Warriors have inked 2006 draft pick Kosta Perovic to a multiyear deal, according to Perovic's agent, Bill Duffy."

MAYBE...$450,000 back from the league
Details of Croshere's contract were unavailable, although as a 10-year veteran, he must receive a minimum of $1.22 million. If the contract is for one year only, the team would receive about $450,000 back from the league, thanks to regulations meant to keep veteran free agents from becoming prohibitively expensive when rounding out a roster.

UPDATE...8/3/07
http://www.contracostatimes.com/warriors/ci_6534483?nclick_check=1

"Ten-year veteran forward Austin Croshere is expected to sign a one-year deal with Golden State this morning, team sources said."

"Croshere is believed to be receiving the league-mandated minimum of $1.22 million, but since he's on a one-year deal, the team will be responsible for only $771,000. The league will pick up the rest of Croshere's salary, thanks to rules meant to keep veteran free agents from becoming prohibitively expensive when rounding out a roster."

Robert Rowell states...

"There's intentions to continue to make this team better and to put the resources in position and to manage the resources properly to be able to accomplish our objective, and that is to put a better basketball team out on the floor than we had last year," team president Robert Rowell said on KNBR radio. "I think we're putting those things in motion, and we're not finished doing what we need to do."

To OptionZero's point
"If Pietrus returns to play out the one-year qualifying offer, the Warriors will have $60.2 million committed to their 14 players in 2007-08, leaving them $7.8 million under the luxury-tax threshold."

But Clearly...The Warriors are not done yet.

I guess when we said "WE BELIEVE" during the playoffs, the Warriors are now carrying that equity into the off season and free agency??

by streetballer on Aug 3, 2007 7:56 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Croshere is a scrub for sure
But this puts his signing in the context of an $800,000.00 11th-12th man.  So the Warriors are in essence saying that they would rather have Croshere man the end of the bench than Lasme, who appears unlikely to be signed.  I suppose, the extra $400,000 to sign Croshere won't effect their signing budget.

Perovic's '07 salary should be around $1.5 million.  That's probably about $700,000 more than Powell would have signed for.  If he proves to be another stiff, it seems like a waste of money.  But neither signing is, thank goodness, wasting too much money.  Although we have now framed our roster, with 13 players signed.

Now, let's see what kind of real deals Mullin can pull off.

why would Mulson want Austin

by BiedrinsORBust on Aug 2, 2007 6:55 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Who knows?
Croshere could be an energy player of the bench. Maybe a Mark Madsen or Eduardo Najera type of player. I welcome Croshere with open arms, if he really is signed.

by ballin on Aug 2, 2007 7:04 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

So we have 14 spots filled
out of 15. That includes Pietris but not Lasne, and Barnes.  Barnes fired Fegan this last week and is looking for a three year deal.  Bets are that Pietris will be off loaded with another 1 or 2 players for a Warrior "need" leaving room for Barnes and others.  The Warriors are NOT done yet.

Croshere, maybe MulliNelliAlJax knows how to set this guy up for 10/10 a night, or just a banger that likes to mix it up with with Boozer??

by streetballer on Aug 2, 2007 7:08 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Croshere
has a lot of heart.  Besides, Mullin knows Austin from his days in Indiana.  I'm sure Mullin knows a thing or two about his game.  There were times in the Dallas series when he'd come in and be the only guy giving energy.  I'd be willing to accept anybody who stands up to BD (including AK47).

Welcome Croshere!

Still living in '94.

agree
he can shoot the 3 ball decently his career 3 point shot percentage is about 34 from the field its a little bit over 40 and his free throw is over 85 percent. he rebounds well. hes a good pick up im sure nellie can use him in some crazy offensive scheme

grumble....grumble...grumble....
I don't know what to say. I don't know why we are signing either of these guys. I really hope that Mulson know what they are doing here, because from the outside this does not make a lot of sense.

with 450k returned back to us is a shitty contract?

croshere is not a good player but to sign him that cheaply is worth it. it's like keep murphy on the team for the cheap.

Perovic for 3 years $5 mil? Really?
I am absolutely convinced that this has some under-the-table Mullin/Duffy stuff written all over it. Duffy is also Biedrins' agent--could this be some sort of appeasement to guarantee that Duffy doesn't play hardball next summer?

by ffgolden on Aug 2, 2007 7:35 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Oh, yeah
The extension negotiation is happening this summer, huh. Duh. I'm curious about the re-signing of Monta: are they even allowed to negotiate with him this summer, or do they just have to wait until he's unrestricted before offering him the new contract? Anyhow, yeah that's definitely what this feels like.

But I agree with others, it still feels like some other wind is a-blowin'. I can't wait 'til Pree breaks the news!

by ffgolden on Aug 2, 2007 10:23 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Money
Croschere at the vet's minimum doesn't mean jack since it's one year- his body eating up a roster space bugs me more.

Kosta, well, everywhere i've read, he's sucked. But if spending $5M on him saves us, say $2M/year for a 5 year extension on Biedrins, then we've already come out at head. Thank you Bill Duffy? Biedrins was easily looking at $50m/5 years; if we get him for, say, $40m/5 years, we got a steal.

I don't get this logic
How does giving more money to PEROVIC convince BIEDRINS to take less money? Duffy gets a cut from both, so for him its all the same, but why would Beans essentially subsidize Perovic's contract?

If Duffy gets Beans less in return for getting Perovic more, he's cheating Beans, which seems unlikely.

by ohmangoAs on Aug 2, 2007 10:55 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Perovic
Kosta, by all accounts, sucks balls. He probably wouldn't have even been drafted, and therefore woudln't have even got a contract.

Mullin helps Duffy by giving a K to someone that would have had nothing. Duffy collects his commission.

In return, we get Biedrins at the lower end of the salary range. Either way he's going to be getting a big contract, big enough that the smaller range on it is worth sacrificing to get his other client a deal.

Duffy already hooked us up on Biedrins, who we got at 11, by refusing to let him work out for any of the other teams.

This is all speculation on my part, but that's the theory.

sucx balls -that's right
maybe he was talanted and maybe he still is but...
i don't know -for hes position he is a poor rebounder (5th season as pro)

looks like he don't have a fighter methality and here if AB is 10 i say Kosta is 3

by Lat We N Trash on Aug 3, 2007 12:43 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's bizarre
that our Option Zero, a guy who usually sounds pretty on the ball here, would think that Biedrins is going to subsidize Perovic out of his own wallet! If Kaman gets 50 million for 5 years, do you think that Biedrins will settle for 40-45/5 just because his agent recommends it? The sports pages are full of guys changing agents. Does anyone really think that Duffy is going to jeopardize a big payday for himself in order to collect some change from Perovic?

I know conspiracy theories find fertile soil on the internet, but this seed is dead on arrival.

by warriorfaninlakerland on Aug 3, 2007 8:39 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed
With all due respect that logic really doesn't make any sense.  OZ is talking about surrending up to $20 million on Pietrus's contract in order to get a few mill for Perovic?  Certainly doesn't make sense from Duffy's point of view, since he gets a piece of that $20 million.

It could be that Mullin actually is signing Perovic on his own merits.  If he is, I hope Mullin knows what he's doing because now we have FOUR centers under contract and three of them might be pieces of poop.

by San Francisco Slim on Aug 3, 2007 9:05 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm sorry
I meant Biedrin's contract.  Saving $20 million on Pietrus's contract - that would be bizzare.

by San Francisco Slim on Aug 3, 2007 9:07 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

There was a diary about that here before
Basically it was about how duffy did Mullin a favor by not letting anyone but the warriors work out beans when he was being drafted, allowing us to basically steal him w/ the 11th pick.  That may be the reason we signed Perovik.

Well my biggest qualm is with signing Croshere
It very well might have to do with the fact that Mullin & Croshere were teammates, especially the season where Croshere just overachieved (and that's not saying much) during the Pacers run to the Finals.  The thing that worries me is he is a weak rebounder, doesn't run, and has an inconsistent shot.  I'd much rather look around the world for Keith Van Horn before giving this guy a contract... but he's being signed before Matt Barnes and Pietrus... both of whom are better than Croshere... maybe its a cost/benefit thing (Barnes and Pietrus does command more money than Croshere) but the benefits looks to be really slim... I hope its not the beer causing Nellin/Mulson to make this decision ...
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

personally,
i think signing croshere is a great move for us. he gets to play in a system that loves shooting big men. he will be comfortable knowing that the men who signed him have full confidence in him, plus he'll be playing with a lot of players we know.

i'm going to go out on a limb and say croshere has a brian cardinal-type season. even though this is the best case scenario, i think he can do it.

by dso on Aug 2, 2007 8:00 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

o and by great
i mean only if it's for the veteran minimum.

by dso on Aug 2, 2007 8:01 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That would make sense
if Croshere was a good shooter.  But he's made just 31% of his threes over the last three seasons.  29% last season.  And he's old and unathletic, so this is a trend which is likely not to reverse.

by San Francisco Slim on Aug 3, 2007 9:12 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

my patience was faultering
and im still disgusted if we really signed this guy instead of tryna resign barnes or mp, why don't we try to swing jason williams from the Heat, they got Smush Parker now, or lets try to get boykins back i mean this is just plain stupidity to sign this guy, unless Jax and Al are vouching for him, and he lost some weight cause he looked almost as big as Al. which reminds me I hope Al lost some weight.

wow
I was (and I guess still partially) a Pacers fan back when Reggie was killin' the Knicks. Even so after he retired. I was actually looking forward to JO and Al Harrington make something out of that team. (Sucks for Jon Bender). And back then, I was actually fairly impressed by Austin Croshere. To the point where I wondered why he didn't get as much PT as I thought he should have. I always thought he was a decent offensive threat who could pull big men away from the basket.

. . .but that was back then. This signing to me isn't making any kind of sense right now. Hopefully Mullin can show us the light.

We've got damn near a full roster right now, but I'm sure we all feel like we're missing something BIG. Hopefully a big sign and trade deal comes through for Pietrus.

1 year for Croshere
at the minimum seems like a  decent move but I don't get the Kosta move.  To much guaranteed money for a guy who could turn out to be another big stiff on the bench

We already have POB and Foyle to cover big men who will never play and I am not sure I am buying the same agent argument.  AB is no dummy.  If his agent is playing around like this he needs a new one

He always used to play well against the Dubs....
So that's another positive if we sign him, of course none of us are going to be happy with this being the "Big" Free Agent acquisition for the off season, but he brings some toughness and good shooting to the team, not the mention the much needed Offensive rebounding.  And we all know Nellie loves those big shooters. We'll see....I think he'll fill a decent role.

Oh well...Like I said before, I think we still put together a good team that seems to fit well together. Theoretically...of course, we have to see how it translates to the court. I ain't mad.

LOL just watched it
didn't realize they were all fight videos, I thought I'd have to analyse the basketball being played.

The first fight between players was pretty brutal. In the NBA nothing came out of the Indiana-Detroit or New York-Denver fights, but in Euroleague it's a different story. He got beat up. The funniest part was the ref/coach getting kicked in the butt.

The second fight was definately also brutal. It did surprise me how ALL of the fans seemed to be on one side, and ALL of the fans seemed to be on another. Specific seating or just chance?

I am also impressed by the chants Euro fans do. Beyond 3 syllables and US fans get lost.

As for the last clip, it was just another guy scoring the winning basket. All I saw was him boxing out for a rebound, lol.

My opinion remains unchanged, though. Partisan is is a pretty crappy team as far as Euroleague goes, and he can't even pull big numbers with them.

this fans behavior is not usual for most of Eoro team fans
-this is way how to suport team in Serbia (because of soccer hooligan traditions, war expirience etc.)

Perovic really by my opinion right now is almoust 0 value player for NBA level (but here is possibility to make him work hard -do offensive things -play pcknrolll -work in gym -maybe then)

right now Yugoslavia have a crisis -they have good veterans and good young guys
but Perovic is noone of them
-he looks like traditional south Euro player with latent talant but huge attitude problem

Moderation in this diary.
A question about the original entry, now modified by OZ.  Is our moderator responsible only for the link to Croshere's stats, or for the text below it (starting 'not too shabby') as well?  It was my understanding that the role of moderator was to cut down on abusive postings and spurious and/or duplicative diaries.

Overall, I think that some sort of moderation is a good idea, but I'd suggest going light on actually editing anyone's posting.  It's a peculiar situation when a moderator is also a heavy-traffic poster.  Modification of someone's post to include editorial commentary on the subject matter seems above and beyond the point of moderation.

I'd suggest then to OZ that he not include any of the editorial part in the entry.  Adding a link to stats is helpful, but the "not too pretty..." belongs as its own post, clearly attributed to him as part of the discussion that follows the entry.  Moderators should moderate, not editorialize.

Josh was offered the same deal as Buke and he didn't accept. This was weeks ago. There was talk of Josh going oversees?? Josh and Austin are/were two different strategic business opportunities for the short or long term.

i think a lot of us (myself included at times)
overrate Josh Powell. He's done nothing. Even in the limited chances he gets, he does nothing. At least a vet like Croshere has some savvy (he even got minutes in the Mavs series, we only had an 8 man rotation).

I agree
other than that 10 footer Powell has nothing that strikes me

Not that Croshere is much better but he shoots the 3 and might have a better chance of hacking someone like Boozer for a few minutes per night

Don't get me wrong though they both are scrubs

If they sign Kosta to me that is odder than the Croshere thing

speaking of nicknames
I always refer to him as "crotch hair"

think about it
its as low risk as could be. if nellie doesnt like him, he wont play him. simple as that. its only 1 year for the minimum. maybe he'll win us a game or 2 by accident. guys who play their heart out are worth at least something
we will miss your j rich

Reload Saved Game
it hit nba.com; i was hoping it was a hoax

http://www.nba.com/warriors/news/Warriors_Sign_PerovicAndCroshere.html

"We are excited that Kosta will be joining our team this season," said Mullin. "He is a very skilled player and we think that he has tremendous potential. We look forward to getting him in our system and continuing his development."
He enjoyed his finest NBA season in 1999-00, averaging career highs of 10.3 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.1 assists

So basically we have a scrub whose best days were 7 years ago plus and 14 feet (adding PoB) of useless "potential?"

Someone hit the 'reset' button.  These signings went terribly wrong

Crochere will be '08 MIP. And Perovic will be ROY.  ANd Halle Berry, Jessica Alba, and Wonderwoman will all ask me to marry them in the state of Utah(where I hear that's legal)...   I need to lay off that Crack.

Don't guys like Perovic, Croshere, and maybe Jassy seem like Sloan players?  Maybe there's a deal in the works for AK-47!
