2k6-2k7 REPORT CARD: Adonal Foyle

Looking for a new job?
The longest tenured Warrior is now gone. Adonal Foyle, you will be missed, not for your basketball skills, but for the energy you brought back into the arena during blowouts. The game could be out of hand and people might be leaving for the exits, but you were always ready for those last 2 minutes of glory. With the crowd chanting "We want Foyle", the people in the aisles heading for the exits would stop and turn hoping to catch a glimpse of your skills. I've never seen a bench player consistently receive so much good will from the crowd. We all wanted you to do well and here's hoping that you do well in Boston, Orlando, or where ever it is you may go.

Foyle's patented move: Make your face look like the ball
Adonal was the man at Colgate U. So much so, that we picked him over some random high schooler whose name sounds like a McDonalds sandwich, McGravy. Looks like we made the right move, since over their careers, our guy has more blocks and a higher field goal percentage.
Is this true? Adonal Foyle has never attempted a 3 point shot in a regular season game? His Yahoo player profile shows him taking 0. I find that hard to believe since he works on that half court shot all the time. I just figured he shot out there because the three point line was too easy for him.
Anyways, our grades for the GOAT after the jump...

Even though 2 of the greatest centers battle each other on the court…

They’re still great friends off of it.

What?
He just didn't do anything else. He's still got hands of stone, can't handle a pass, doesn't know how to move the ball and is, when you get down to it, a terribly limited player, but let's not make up false statements about the only two things he did reasonably well.
I don't know if you can blame his predicament on his lack of work. I suspect it's that he just isn't that talented and no amount of work is going to change that.

Look I Love the Guy
It's a poor rebounding team, so sorry I don't value how he stacks up vs what Barkley termed a group of midgets. People used to say Murph's rebounds were empty and meaningless- Foyle's are even more meaningless. He is by no means a good rebounder. Watch the games- he's was by no stretch of the imagination a rebounding threat or force. If he was, don't you think Nellie would've used him against the Jazz?
As for blocks look at what I wrote- he did not try to block EVERY shot (which Nellie complained about in one of his interviews). He blocks and challenges a few (very well) when he first enters the game, but either loses focus, intensity, or stamina and doesn't go after people's shots after a few minutes.
I've always thought he was an overrated defender and even shot blocker. Excellent defenders/ shot blockers are guys like Zo, Jermaine O'Neal, and Tim Duncan- they challenge EVERY shot. Foyle doesn't do that and never has.
Flip back to some of Nellie's interviews with the Razor and Mr. T. My complaints with Foyle's game are very much in line with his.
Don't get me mistaken- I like the guy and I've always rooted for him, BUT his career and work ethic have been pitiful. I find it extremely disappointing that such a smart guy has a very poor grasp of the fundamentals of the game and has such a low hoops IQ. Throughout his career I've seen him be out of position on offense countless number of times and read his man very poorly on D. So what if he finally got into reasonable shape in his 10th year in the league? It's about time.
But again, there's worse guys making that kinda dough in the world for doing worse things. And I'm happy a ton of Cohan's dollars went to him. He'll do good things with his fortunes.

Atma, you're a hater
Hoops IQ does not = real IQ, Atma. Ever look at some QBs Wonderlick scores? It's a whole different thing trying to position your clumsy body just right rather than look at Campaign finance reform. I know this for a fact, because I may be the smartest in the class, but when my body steps on the basketball floor, I immediately become the dumbest man in the room. And if that was true, can you imagine how dumb Mikael would be? I don't even want to think about it.
No, I don't think Don Nelson would've EVER used Foyle. No matter how many rebounds he's got. Don Nelson goes solely on offensive merit, and he doesn't give a CRAP how much you can rebound, block, or defend. Alonzo Mourning would've never seen the light of day.
But, I'm not going to go on, because we've had these arguments before, and they go in circles, and each time you clearly win. Once my video evidence comes out, Atma will cry for mercy!

Um no
Where did I say Hoops IQ = real IQ? I said I'm disappointed that a smart guy wasn't smarter on the court. I took no shots and will never at the mans intelligence- he's a smart guy and I respect him.
Nellie does not play people solely on offensive merit. That's a myth. He pulled JRich in a few of the Jazz games because he wasn't defending well and kept Jackson in despite his turnovers and questionable shot selection because Stephen always brought it on the defensive end- Nellie even spoke about this point on Jax in an interview on KNBR.
Yes, Nellie's leash with Foyle was extremely short this year, but given his poor play on the court and failure to listen to what Nellie asked him to do plus his accumulated poor performance over the years, I can't really blame him. It's not like Foyle has any upside or any trade value to showcase.
The next GM that signs Foyle should be given a pink slip. Hopefully the man concentrates on campaign finance reform and stops masquerading as an NBA player. The NBA is second to him and that's fine.

Grade? A+++++++++++++
Hash: I'm coming for you! Make a run for it, before you must face my wrath!
As for the GSoM crew: you guys don't know true talent. Nellie ball comes back and all of a sudden we're rating a guys offense. Trying to judge him on what he did this season? Puh-leaze. Don Nelson gave him 5 minutes (in which nothing momentous happened) to prove himself, and then he confines him to the bench for the rest of the season. Talk about crap.
Adonal will come back for you....and when he comes back to the Oracle, he will put the SMACK DOWN on all of you who have hated his basketball skills for so long.
Watch out for Defensive Player of the Year!

A for what else, Adonal
You can't give him a 100% crap F when he took less money in his buyout, as always taking one for the team for the better good, never really giving you a legit reason to hate on him.
Andris Biedrins came into his own and became the best center prospect possible for the run and gun style.
Even if Foyle was a 10 rebound guy, you're not going to have him on the floor at the same time as Andris, in any game with such an uptempo offense implemented. Foyle outlet passing notwithstanding. combine the Foyle outlet pass with AB's speed and length into one player and then you got something!
So to say you wanted soo much production out of him, that would have taken away key minutes from AB anyway. And instead of subbing C for C in foul/fatigue moves, Nellie wanted to throw Big Al into the mix for the mismatches, even if you lose the post presence and rebounding/shot contesting.
You knew out of the first few years of Duncan and Foyle's respective careers who was going to be what. Kinda late to expect a similar player. Foyle's salary also didn't hamper bringing in the mid season moves and turnaround of the team and in one more year with the next season expiring would have been an asset to get another rotation player, nobody major playing the chances, but someone else in an MP2 kinda bench/spotting minutes role as has been mentioned before in the Foyle Buyout threads on GSoM here.

Pluses and Minuses = Grade: D and F
- He is a good rebounder. Terry Cummings tutored him in the fine art of blocking out.
- He has amazing shot blocking timing. But to Atma's point, he seemed to only want to go after shots in spurts. I have no idea why.
- He is, by all accounts since I never met him, a good guy who cares about the world.
- Dropped passes
- Free Throws
- Refusal to follow the coach's instructions and abandon all offensive aspirations.
- Lack of any improvement in any area of his game except for that one drop step move he learned at big man camp which only works from a specific spot in the right side of the low post.
- His horrible screen setting. It always looked like he was playing tag instead of setting a pick. He would touch the guy he was supposed to be setting the pick on and roll to the basket after .5 of a second. For one thing, it didn't work because he wasn't actually screening the guy so nobody got open. The other thing is, why was he rolling to the basket? So he could drop the pass? Not finish if he managed to retain the ball after fumbling it a couple times? Or somehow get fouled and miss on or two of his free throws? The point is, he never set a proper screen and it seemed like the reason was he was soo eager to roll to the basket so he could turn the ball over or miss a shot or free throws.
Bottom line: He did on or two things really well and a bunch of things abysmally. He gets a "D" for being a below average basketball player but he gets an "F" for not making the most of what he was good at by refusing to playing within himself and just concentrate on rebounding, defending and blocking shots. Oh, and learning how to set a screen. That's all on him.

Haha
And as far as Foyle's defense goes one block every ten minutes or so isn't bad any way you look at it. Nellie could have asked him to block every shot but seriously what do you want from the guy. He clearly blocked all the shots he could in his limited time with his limited hops.
I will close with a quote from Rex Chapman while doing a W's game on espn, right after they listed Foyles career blocks. "Thats a lot of blocks for a guy who can't jump over a phone book!" or something to that effect.

Foyle = Starting Center?
I seem to have some vague recollection of OD being a starting center when Mike Montgomery was coach. Maybe he started for some other Warrior coach, too, but the memory is all very cloudy now. I try to think about it, but then I scrunch my face and pass out.
