Rumor: Barnes and Warriors have reached agreement

It's being rumored on some internet boards that Barnes and the Warriors have reached an agreement on a contract.

Star-divide

It's being rumored on some internet boards that Barnes and the Warriors have reached an agreement on a contract.

Nothing official has been announced.  Nothing seems to confirm this.

But the source was reprted to be pretty reliable and 'usually ahead of the rest of the media by about 24 hours' to paraphrase one poster who believed in this poster.

It's a rumor.  It's pretty much taken as fact on one board.  Let's wait and see.

[Moderator's Note, by OptionZero:] Link pointed out by raymondtee

A source close to the situation told Basketball News late on Saturday that the Golden State Warriors could be close to an agreement to bring the unrestricted free agent swingman back to the team. Terms discussed in the negotiations are not yet known and have not been finalized, but the source indicated that "something could be solidified very soon." Source: our very own pree, on Hoops World

Better
Well Austin Crochere certainly aint better. Barnes another intensity player. U saw many times how he sent messages to teams by givin them hard fouls, and then he get in there faces. Tha boy is a Stud

Exactly
That's another one of my theories about signing Austin Croshere.

From here on out, whenever the Warriors make a sideways, questionable, non-impact move like signing Barnes we'll all say "hey at least he's better than Austin Croshere".  It's like Mullin has lowered our expectations for the rest of the offseason.

Still, got nothing but love for Barnes though.  Nobody else left on the board I'd rather have at the backup 3 (besides possibly Ricky Davis if he were available).

I think
the perovic and croshere signings were ok, we gonna need big men that can score and run the floor, im just afraid josh powell might not make the team now. but i'd be very sad if they didnt bring back barnes, he was my favorite player throughout the whole year last year, cause when J-Rich and Baron were hurt, he stepped up in alot of games for us and GS is a great fit for him, I hope he stays a while. This is good news to my ear. I just hope we can pull Pietrus back or at least get a trade to bring Jason Williams here or another PG to back-up BD.

what is you're opinion on what is gonna happen with pietrus?

do you think that the warriors are gonna get jwill?

by pfree on Aug 5, 2007 1:22 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I thought about Jason Williams
long before any of these sign and trade rumors surfaced to be honest... I thought the Warriors could have made a deal that would have landed them Wilcox, and Jason with a three way trade with Miami and Seattle...since Miami wanted R. Lewis at the time.

I still think Will would be a great fit, more importantly, his contract expires after this season, which then gives us the oppertunity to draft a young PG in an upcoming loaded class...

To answer your question, for what its worth, I think the Warriors have done a brilliant job and have showed alot of patience with Pietrus.

I think their still playing chicken with a couple teams that want him, but in the end, he will re-sign for 1 yr. and then will be included in a package that will send he and Harrington elsewhere.

Im interested in seeing what they will do with Sarunas. I think alot of teams would love to add him to their depth, and he could be extremely valuable as a piece in a packaged deal.

what do you think?

DREAMING
This might sound odd, but I had a dream about BARNES last night (not in that way)!  I was watching a game, I guess courtside, and he was lighting it up w/ 3's to give the WARRIORS an 11 point lead at half-time (I don't know who against though).  Anyways, he had grown out his hair and I went up to him and told him that he did great and told him he looked like CABARKAPA and he kinda nudged me.  I guess he didn't like that comment! haha

Anyways, I hope he does re-sign, but I hope he doesn't grow out his hair, but if he did, I think I'm a fortune teller or something!  Maybe a MAGIC 8-BALL, but w/ two!

THE END!

"GO BIG or GO HOME!!!"

thank god
i hope we get him cheap but at the same time not so cheap that he isn't rewarded for his great play in the playoffs last year.  He really was our 3rd or 4rth best player in the Mavs series.

by sadleavy on Aug 5, 2007 2:20 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

this is good news
if he can improve on the turnovers, stay somewhere close to his percentages from last year...this is a steal.  The defense and hustle will be there; it's just the shooting that I can't imagine will continue to be there.

by GameSix on Aug 5, 2007 2:47 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Why
would his shooting diminish?

I think its really just a matter of practicing rather than forgetting to eat your wheaties...

by BlueNgoldBlood on Aug 5, 2007 7:28 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

question mark
Maybe he was one year wonder?  People's shooting percentages fluctuate all the time.

With J-rich gone, everybody is going to have to step up to plug that hole in production.  I mean, if he's brought in exclusively for defense and energy, then who cares if his shooting goes up/down.  Still though, it'd be nice.

Matt...
Barnes is a beast, every team needs a player like him and we're lucky we do.

by RSIZ510 on Aug 5, 2007 3:33 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Yayyyyyy!!!
I love Matt Barnes. Assuming the $$$ are reasonable (from what I've heard, they should be) this is great news. Now let's flip Harrington, Cabbages, POB and the TPE for Artest and AK-47 and call it a day...

by Sleepy Freud on Aug 5, 2007 4:32 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

This might be the best news of the offseason
thus far. The Jrich trade was a savy move but not one that improved our team now. This move is a great move for the warriors all around. Barnes flexability IMO is too valuable to let slip away andif the money is right we are in great shape to make another solid move. If we get him back and can flip MP for something decent I am happy.

On the AK trade I would be ALL for it. I think we might be able to steal him for the TPE and Cabbages or something of that nature.Everything I have read about the Jazz owners words about AK are not good. He seems to want him out (sorry I can't find a link)

If we can get him without giving up Harrington I would LOVE our team next year and put us at a 3-6 seed because of the improvment of some of our youngsters and our extreme depth.

BD/ JWILL
Ellis/ Belinelli/ Buke
JAX/ BArnes/Buke
AK/ Harrington/ Wright
AB/Cro/ garbage/ garbage/ garbage

Now that is a good lineup and perfect for nelli-ball

your pick, Monta, AB and BD or just AK47?

by J Rich 4 MVP on Aug 5, 2007 5:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

isn't AK too expensive?
AK would be getting 13 mil this year and end around 18.  Wouldn't we be saying goodbye to at least Monta if not Beans next season or saying goodbye to Baron.

why is everyone
so pessimistic? imagine, these guys play ball for a living. bringin it on the court for the hometeam, trying to get farther than last year knowing we have the talent...any player, including barnes is gonna work to improve that shooting, rebounding and killer instinct, because like us, he also saw what he brought to the team in the playoffs. and if it was a fluke, why does everyone think he'll just sit back and wait for another fluke to occur?
...never a fairweather fan...

by commish on Aug 5, 2007 5:07 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

No way
Barnes would never settle for one year.

Barnes isn't a $5M/year player, so i think we got a good deal if the price, at the most, is 3 years, $12M. I wouldn't want to go longer or more expensive that that, really.

If those are the terms, then I think Mullin did a pretty good job. Again, he has not overpaid for any free agents and he hasn't oversent his assets our of desperation or frustration.

Let's review the overall offseason:

The Magic pretty much bent themselves by giving Lewis a ridiculous contract while also extending Howard; New York just stabbed themselves even more; Phoenix gave away its best frontcourt defender. Those were the stupid moves.

Portland and Seattle made a bunch of sexy moves because they were in a position to do so, and they've gotten their rebuilding under way. Boston got the Big Ticket and jumped into contention.

We, on the other hand, have done pretty much nothing. Lost one piece (Richardson), gained another (Wright), and replaced others (Pietrus for Belinelli) while building depth (Croshere, Perovic, keeping Barnes).

So while we have moved mostly laterally this offseason, we still have the ability to make a move (here comes the key part) when the opportunity arises.

One move passed us by, ok. We're still in a position to do something, so if, for example, AK comes on the market (which he isn't now) or if Artests' price comes down (hasn't yet), then we CAN be all over it.

Anyways, I digress.

Barnes: no more than $12M/3years please.

Its a good thing.
We'll have a familiar face in the locker room, also the man's a competitor that relishes in his role, and takes pride in coming off of the bench. He loves the Warriors, to me, if you got a guy that can play the game and loves his colors, Im all for keeping that guy around.

I hate to say it again, but I think we're going to see a deal go down as soon as Pietrus comes back with his tail between his legs, and as soon as the Aug. 6 restriction comes undone.

Commish, pree...good work
We now who pree is...Commish, you are still a mystery. Like I wrote in a different diary, Barnes skills/intangibles were good in a 6 -> 8 man rotation, but not part of the bigger picture and a fully dressed bench! This is NOT the August 6th announcement we were hoping for, but plan B is unfolding.

Yes!
Just got back from the beach and this caps off what was a pretty sweet day. I am really glad to see him back and I'm pretty comfortable with the terms of the contract too. I think one year makes sense for us and him. It seems we are really leaving our options open for next offseason. If Barnes proves himself as a starter then next year we (or someone else) can give him starter's money but until then I think he's a steal for us and a great fit for this team.
