The Oregonian has learned that Trail Blazers rookie center Greg Oden injured his right knee on Monday in Portland and underwent a magnetic resonance imaging. The test results are not available, but he is expected to have exploratory surgery on Thursday, team sources said.

The Trail Blazers are expected to issue a press release shortly and we'll pass along more information as we learn more.

[Moderator's Note, by OptionZero:] ESPN now reporting that Oden is out for the season

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Celebrated Trail Blazers rookie center Greg Oden, the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft, will likely miss the 2007-08 season after undergoing knee surgery Thursday, the team said. Doctors found cartilage damage during an exploratory procedure, and team physician Dr. Don Roberts performed microfracture surgery to repair the damage.

question:
Didn't Oden have "injury" concerns prior to the draft? Was that his knee, or was it his back?

Could be Sam Bowie all over again...

Questions? Complaints?

this could be good
for us since the blazers could be contenders for a playoff spot.

doubt it
the blazers are even younger than us. they'll show flashes this year, and they'll be really good in 2 to 3 years

He
didn't injure his knee like it's made out to be in this diary, he's having exploratory surgery because they think it's cartilage damage, which is much less severe than blowing out your knee. However, there is still big concern because cartledge damage will most likely lead to a serious bout with arthritis. I know most people who play sports, especially professionally, usually develop some sort of arthritis. Hell, I'm only 23 and I'm already developing it in my elbow, imagine the grind that pro athletes face. So when they go in, I'm sure everything will end up being alright, but we'll want to watch it during the season and see how his knee reacts to th e grind of 82 games, that's when we're going to really see how it effects him.

Arthroscopic Surgery
In this day and age, arthroscopic surgeries are no biggie.  He will be in and out in a day.  You don't even stay over night for arthro anymore.  They will poke around and check the scene inside his knee and maybe make some nips and tucks, but he should be fine in the long run.  It will probably clean up his knee and he may even be better than before-hell the dude is only like 21 so he should spring right back as opossed to a guy like Jason Williams or GP.  Now as far as his play, I still have doubts in the young feller being that he is so talked about.  I see him as a polished Brenden Haywood even before the injury...Durant is the real deal everyone!

I
agree about Oden, I think he's a boom or bust type player with big upside. I'm not sure he's going to be the stud center everyone makes him out to be. On the other hand, Durant is going to be a force in this league for the next decade.

Durant
Durant will score a ton of points.  Whether he helps his team improve is a different issue.  His summer league performance should make Sonics fans worry, and worry big.  A 11rpg in college dropped to about 1 a game in the summer league.  I believe the only player he outrebounded on a per-minute basis was Belinelli, a weak rebounding guard.  That's more than a bit alarming.  He seemed content to fire up shots without regard for his fg% so long as he got his points. The no-rebound, high volume, low efficiency scoring isn't usually punished when it comes to salaries, and people declare such players 'stars' bu they don't help teams win.

Granted, that's a small sample vs. his ability to rebound at the college level, but I'd say that he's not at all a sure thing, no more sure than Glen Robinson, who was similarly a rebounding, scoring, do everything player who went on to have a ridiculously unimpressive career scoring many points without having much impact on the outcome of games.

Durant = SG
One seattle writer (Tacoma Tribune?) suggested that Durant might start at SG.

If that's the case, Wilcox and Green can man the 3/4 spots and rebounding shouldn't be affected much. Green should certainly be able to outboard Rashard "overpaid" Lewis.

Questions? Complaints?

I
don't put much weight into the summer league because it's about as structured as a game you'll find at your local gym. I don't think he's going to board at the rate he was in college but I think he can average 5-7 boards a game if he's going to play the 3, which most teams would take. If he plays the 2 like OZ suggested, there will be less emphasis on rebounding and more on the scoring aspect of the position.

More to the game than scoring.
I don't put too much weight on the summer league either, but to go from 11rpg in college to about 2 in the summer league is more than strange.  He was the second worst in the entire summer league.  To go from 3rd best in college divI to 2nd worst in the summer league is troubling.  That it's a glorified pickup game doesn't explain how he could play that poorly unless he just didn't care.

There have been tons of 'great' scorers on bad teams, guys who can put up 20 to 30 a night regularly in losing efforts.  The players who do this and win generally, not always, but in the vast majority of cases, do something else for their team, like pass, rebound, defend.  Durant was a dominant player in college because he did more than just score.  He scored, but he was also among the nation's leaders in rebounding.  If he somehow decides that this is no longer part of his game and the Sonics allow this.

"Taking" 5-7 rebounds a game  (in how many minutes?--this makes a big, big difference.  5 in 35 minutes, not very good.  7 in 30 would be pretty good) means accepting that a guy who was a fantastic college rebounder goes to strictly mediocre and loses one of those things that set him apart from the field.  Putting him at an off guard spot and not looking for rebounds from him would further mean removing an aspect of his game that made him valuable.  Green wasn't as good a rebounder, so why they'd want to put him in a position where he'd be in a better position to rebound than Durant seems strange.

I realize that scoring is what sets up highlight reels, what garners all-star votes, what gets big contracts, but the emphasis on scoring over all else is a mistake, and if he's a scoring off guard who doesn't rebound, expect him to get big paydays, big scoring numbers for 82 games until he watches the playoffs on TV.

I don't know that this is going to happen, but I do think that there are ways that Durant can be something other than a sure thing in terms of helping his team win.  One way would be if he doesn't rebound the ball and becomes a one-dimensional shooter.

Additional info:
from ESPN:
Celebrated Trail Blazers rookie center Greg Oden, the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft, will likely miss the 2007-2008 season after undergoing knee surgery Thursday, the team said.

"Greg had an arthroscopy and a microfracture surgery today," team physician Dr. Don Roberts, who preformed the surgery, said in a statement posted on the Trail Blazers' Web site. "He was found to have articular cartilage damage in his right knee. The area of injury was not large and we were able to treat it with microfracture, which stimulates the growth of cartilage.

"There are things about this that are positive for Greg. First of all, he is young. The area where the damage was is small and the rest of his knee looked normal. All those are good signs for a complete recovery from microfracture surgery."

I know this sad for the Oden and family and I wish him well and full recovery. I am also sorry for the franchise as they have let their team physician to do the physical for him and they took their chances and even send Zach Randolf to the Knicks to give him room to grow. Most of all, I a also sorry for the fans who will miss the opportunity to see a No. pick play and hope this will be the season for them to come over the hump.

Well, at least it's good news
for Channing Frye. I always thought it was odd that they traded for Frye after having drafted Oden, drafted Aldridge previously, and signed Pryzbilla for $26mil(!). Now they'll all have a lot more PT to show what they can do. It's almost as if Portland anticipated this.

The injury means...
the Joel Pyzabilla era goes on longer than expected.  I don't expect a lot of Aldridge at the 5 spot, since the Blazers want him to develop as a 4, in order to play along with Oden.

Did anybody see this from Yahoo?

Just this week on the telephone, there was an Eastern Conference executive studying Greg Oden's pre-draft physical in his office. Even now, this report still didn't look like the body of a 19-year old prospect, but that of an older, worn veteran. 'From our (trainers and doctors), there were red flags everywhere,' he said. The executive started listing the troubled spots the bulging disc in the back, wrists, the ankles, the hands, a right leg that was an inch longer than the left, and yes, the knees. He wasn't alone. Several pulled files this week with news of impending knee surgery, and kept wondering if maybe the breakdown of his body was just a matter of time.

rumor
The newest rumor swirling in our local radio station is that Oden got hurt by.....playing Dance Dance Revolution at a local arcade!  He's supposedly a big fan of DDR.

Dang
You could feel the way things have worked out since he got drafted that he would be injury riddled this season, but damn! Out the whole year! In the long run this may help the Blazers. They get a year to figure out who stays and who goes, develop the younger cats and find out where they need to plug the holes via free agency.
