Let's Draw... GSW Cartoons! (and friends!) Part 1

Let's build a GSW Community of animated characters... and duke it out with the Nintendo Mii Folks on Wii Sports!

GSW Players and Fans... always rockin the flyest Gear!

I know you've seen these little guys in the past, and when I first started drawing for GSoM I originally wanted to do a How to draw GSW cartoons. Problem is... when I got started I wasn't sure who I wanted to draw... what would they be wearing... Home Jersey? Away Jersey? City Jersey? Yellow or blue? Would it be fair if I did this? Will so and so get mad if I do that? So this past week I decided to draw a couple of these folks... a few hours later I ended up drawing more than just the players... I did a Warrior Girl, recently traded players and even the staff at GSoM! So I figured it out... Just for kicks, let's do up the entire GSW community and see how many of these familiar faces (we always see at games) I can draw up! The fun part of this drawing session was seeing the different kinds of apparel I had the opportunity to recreate. I have a number of em' and wish I owned the one's I made up!

I know... I know... I've heard it all... "these caricatures are pretty easy to make... I bet it doesn't take too much talent to make em' up... it only takes you 10-20 minutes to draw one of em', why don't you do something more challenging... I seen these cat's drawing style similar to the Pharrell album cover "In My Mind" (which sad to say, sucked- how many of you bought it? and how many of you ripped off the style too?!?) So I asked myself this... How many of you guys are willing to draw up the entire GSW Community in this similar drawing style?!? With different segments You'll be seeing everyone from the Team players- current, old, new and recently traded. (don't worry, Ellis, Barnes and many others will appear in the next segment) The Oracle Staff, GSW Fans, Vehicles, training area's, The Oracle Arena, shoot- even our enemy's and friends to GSW... the coaching staff to alternate costumes! (300 Baron Edition, TMNT Harrington, Nelly in Pajama's...) Let's have fun with this and share it to the world. (ala GSoM)

There's more after the jump as I break down this week's line up! ENJOY!

Star-divide

GSW Community and friends! Session 1's line up... 25 deep!

Yep... Golden State of Mind's Creative Writing Staff! Doing more for Your Golden State Warriors... We GSoM!"

Even Franco Finn Rocks the spot... I'm gonna make it happen before the season... GSW All over Print Jacket! Coach Nelly... welcome back! Had to show P.O.B. some love... Andris goes hardwood...classic!

What's up with Action Jackson's teeth?!? Love em' or hate em'... a Warrior Girl! Boom Dizzle Rockin' a home Jersey while Kelenna reps a GSoM Home Jersey... Ahh, Zarko... always well dressed on the bench (just how I remember him!)

J-Rich... forever a Dub... currently a Bobcat. Thunder rocks the spot at Oracle arena (and a fly Orange Jersey!) Sarunas... Love the hair! Mullin... bringin' back the dope jersey from way back when... THe Hoop troop guy needs to hit up the upper level more often!

Special guest... Yao Ming! (Adonal's buddy) Adonal Foyle... showin' us Magic... GSW's newest addition... Brandan Wright! Al Harrington modeling for Hanes lol.

Dedicated to GSdubz and all the Raider Fans...
Sorry, had to post up top... As posted below... some concerns on the 49ers look alike Jersey... (lol) and now my reply!

I feel bad now and don't want to leave Raider fans out of the spotlight... yea I know this is a GSW site but with R Diz sporting a Niners look alike Jersey... it had me thinkin'... Here's a lil somethin' whipped up for Oakland Diehards!

Awesome!
Love them all.

The only one that bugs me just a little is the wrinkly Nellie: all the lines make him look a little scary and Frankenstein-esque, not quite in keeping with the whimsy and simplicity of the rest. Isn't the grey hair sufficient to convey his age?

Yeah, yeah, don't mind me, just standing up for the "elderly" GSoM Gen-X contingent. Lord knows there's nothing worse than compromising one's art so as not to "offend." Keep up the fantastic work!

I'm starting the Frankenelli movement
as soon as he dies and before we go into another 12-year tailspin. The "movement" will call for his immediate exhumation and subsequent reanimation.

I think the Frankenstein effect is largely due to the size of his feet. That is not a criticism, I like it. It's the cartoon that started the movement!

FRANKENELLIE 2012!!!!!!

(I figure at his age and in his physical condition, he doesn't have too many years left.)

LOL on Nellie...!
You know the original dude who started the drawings for his album cover had a template strictly for his character wearing a T-SHirt with some sort of message... I flipped it and added jersey's, sports apperal, etc... but he never took it 2 the next level and drew old people and women... so right now I'm just winging it and trying 2 figure out what works... minus the wrinkles, he looks like an overweight dude with grey hair like the winner of American idol a few years ago lol. Let's see what we can do. I still have the dunmurphy sisters to draw (!... and PJ Carlisimo and Spreewell!)

Nice touch with the Hoop Troop Pizza guy.
U mad?

Have you ever won a Hoop Troop Pizza?!?
Yo... we won won in the lower level... (using my signs lol!) and it was the bomb! It ain't no nasty a$$ pizza from Road Runner Pizza's... it tasted fresh, the pep and cheese layered on top of each other and there was mad flavor... best meal ever at the Oracle arena! I wish I wasn't on a diet still, lol, just thinkin' of a Luigi's pizza put 10 pounds back into my guy!

I was saving it for the next segment, and one w/ his tongue hanging out... come to think of it I don't know why he's rockin the White T's and boxers... lol!

Wow
I like how both Atma and Sarunas are barely up to Nellie's chin! All the heights are pretty interesting, and I agree with YaoButtaMing, the fact that Yao's head is cut off is awesome!

I'm taller and slimmer than Atma! HELLA realistic!

I got a trivia question for you...who can stop number 5?

Umm..
NO.

Well at least I'm better looking in this drawing which is realistic.

by Atma Brother ONE on Sep 21, 2007 1:19 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

One of the many things I love about these
Is how great they all looked lined up. It's what graphics guru Edward Tufte calls "small multiples." The consistency of style and line weight with all the great variations in color, pattern and height is just total eye candy. Also, if you line them all up, you can make a superl-o-n-g webpin, which maximizes your visual impact while minimizing scrolling for the user...

In fact, if I had a vote, I'd love to ditch the side banner logo altogether (never liked the lightning bolt) and replace it with a long header of Tony.psd characters...

by Sleepy Freud on Sep 16, 2007 10:21 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
GsoM logo is awesome! Don't be dissin'!
Tony.psd = Da Man

by Zorgon on Sep 16, 2007 10:47 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

May I ask ... why?
Or is "the GSoM logo is awesome" just one of your opinions, along the lines of "Adonal Foyle is awesome" ;-P

Seriously, not to diss the original artist, but there's absolutely nothing to recommend it, other than the fact that after a couple of years some people may have grown used to it. It's hideous to look at, with its nonsensical gradients and dropshadows; and it's weak conceptually, since neither the lightning bolt nor the map of California reps the Warriors in a meaningful or poetic way.

Tony.psd's best work is both hella fun and hella graphically sophisticated. The existing logo is neither. It seems more suited to a bad computer repair store on the Peninsula than to this hip, hyphy, hoop-related site.

Personally, if I were Atma, FJ, and co., and consider dignifying Tony.psd's work by making him a permanent part of the site's graphic identity. Not sure how much graphic leeway you get under the SB nation, but once Tony.psd finishes all the relevant caricatures I'd love to see something more like this...

Just a sketch ... and yeah, maybe a tad "cartoony" for what has now become the Warriors' "blog of record," but way more reflective of the spirit of the site than the existing eyesore.

by Sleepy Freud on Sep 17, 2007 3:42 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I Guess it is more tradition
But time has made fools of us all. I'm still in support of keeping our current design. If we did the banner you proposed, the whole site would have to be bright yellow, and everybody would burn their eyes out.

I don't know...I just like things the way they are.

Tony.psd = Da Man

by Zorgon on Sep 17, 2007 4:52 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think i don't want so much yellow
that our eyes burn out every time but i do like sleep's design suggestions.  the little tony.psd guys are great and i don't think it's a half-bad idea to make it a "permanent" (for however long that is) part of the main page.

by sadleavy on Sep 17, 2007 2:30 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

No!
This is a ridiculous idea. The site is fine the way it is! I don't want no cartoons on my page!
Tony.psd = Da Man

by Zorgon on Sep 17, 2007 9:02 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Man, that is great!
You come up with some good points sleepy. We never really thought of changing the logo till you brought it up but since I joined the GSoM camp I've got a couple of projects on my plate in defining the site... or in terms of moving forward... you'll see little changes as time passes. I'm even doing up a new template for the webpins! which I've been lagging due to constraints with my day job. I will say, design wise, we're moving forward and depending how the guys feel, I am open to modifying the logo... it isn't my call until they say so :)

by Tony.psd on Sep 17, 2007 8:11 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually
The way you've simplified the logo in the "WE (logo) GSOM" is already a huge improvement. On yours the gradient makes some sense, since it looks like a white-hot nucleus where the two shapes meet, not a random dropshadow (why would lightning leave a dropshadow?). Your bold outlines also make it look more like an elegant mark and less like a bad illustration.

Anyway, blah blah, no need to explain, since you obviously have an instinctive feel for line, form and color that's beyond my skills as a bullsh*tter ;-)...

I don't know enough about the back end of the site to know what's possible, but I do know that with even a little flexibility you could improve the look of the site a ton. You've already done so with your great webpins and diaries, but, as I said, it'd be cool if it could take a become a more "permanent" part of the GSoM graphic landscape.

by Sleepy Freud on Sep 17, 2007 9:16 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thanks for the input Sleepy
I think you definitely have a point. I've never been a big fan of the logo (it was given to us), and I think Tony could really improve the overall look of the site. I'll talk to the guys about a change and see what they think.

Any chance you could email us the graphic you made, the photoshop file (or whatever file type), not just the jpeg?

goldenstwarriors@gmail.com

by Fantasy Junkie on Sep 17, 2007 8:15 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sure
I could leave it as an uncompressed .psd file in layers, though I'd probably have to rasterize the type layers since it's kind of an obscure font. It's a 5 MB file -- can your email handle that or should I upload it to an ftp?

by Sleepy Freud on Sep 17, 2007 9:23 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Gmail
I think gmail can handle a 5mb file (I think the limit is 10mb). So just send the uncompressed file along and we'll work with it. And if you can, send the font file along too. I want to keep your creation as true to the original as possible.

Thanks!

I never
got to compliment your image upgrade of the "lil' dudes!" Good lookin' I am really feelin' it! I had an Idea of doin' some of the regulars on GSoM like you, Option Zero, LightzOut and a number of other dudes just for kicks... I even wanted to draw that Tim N' Chris Burger guy similar to the Whopper dude on Burger King who's dressed as a... Whopper! It's gonna be a monthly segment so be on the look out... next month! I don't wanna play it out LOL!

Great Stuff Tony
I really love these guys. Maybe the most fun and entertaining of the work you've shared with us.

BTW I'm not sure if I qualify as a "regular" but if you get some time I think that MJ rockin a team USA jersey would be a fitting representation of my username. ;-)

Niners?
I know your niners guy is justified, but still, this  is a Warriors site and I just gotta say we're not all SF fans, (dont forget the W's are an oakland-based team).

all in all, the animations are pretty sick though, wish u could throw in a raider to balance out the SF bias, but then again, this is gsom...

If War brings peace Dubz wit' it den!

by gsdubz on Sep 16, 2007 10:44 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

LOL...
Every pic sample I got from R-Dizzle had him rocking a Niners jersey, originally I wanted to make it a 2 face style outfit and have a raiders "like" jersey on the right half... come to think of it... they're niner colors, but the logo isn't anywhere so he could be rocking a Fremont High Jersey (lol). R-Dizzle seemed happy 2 rock his jersey as requested...

We got a long way to go in concepts I'd like to try. You'll see Raider, A's, maybe even E-40 rock the GSW gear.... sky's the limit :)

by Tony.psd on Sep 16, 2007 10:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

ok cool good to know
ya i'd just like to see a little more a's and raiders on this site cuz some of my friends who i told about this site from the east bay have been a lil turned off by a slight bit of peninsula bias on this site.

can't wait for the raiders one to come out!

Ballin' like its '88!

by manutefor3 on Sep 17, 2007 1:25 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I vote for Owen Wilson
I have a friend who hung with him for a few days (for an interview) and said he was the most genuinely kind and unpretentious famous person he'd ever met.

Given his recent troubles, I think we should include him, so he knows that the next time he feels really down and blue, the whole GSoM family's got his back...

by Sleepy Freud on Sep 17, 2007 2:30 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

LOL...Lets do Snoop Dawg too! (jk)
Looks like we're on the same page guys...! The main basis no doubt is the Warriors line up but to add a community of supporting cast is the fun part! You'll be seeing a lot of alternate costumes and "special guests!" Come season time... you'll be seeing Alba... a lot! (LOL)

by Tony.psd on Sep 17, 2007 8:34 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

definitely
Alba and some retro Warriors - Wilt, Run TMC, Tolbert, Manute rail-thin and sans head like YAO!

these are too fun!!
