Interview: Nellie on KNBR now

Nellie was just one the Razor and Mr. T show on KNBR 680 (4:30PM, Tues, 9/18). Notes from what I heard:

- Wright doesn't quite look like he's ready to contribute right away (NOTE: Nellie said that about Biedrins...)

- Lasme, however, could "defend anyone" and is someone who could come off the bench right away and be someone who boards and blocks shots, which is what he needs. Qualification: Wright looks to be better in the long run, just Lasme is ready to play now

- Biedrins could put on 20 lbs and still be effective because he has the frame.

- We were not close to getting Garnett (presumably Boston's offer was just plain better)

Hopefully the interview is up for download soon.

YES
Lasme could be Zorgons new favourite Warrior. I'd love to see him step up and contribute. Lets go Lasme!

i agree
i hope and think that this kid can make a contribution and i think he can easily avreage 9 rebs and 3 blocks.  he had 4 years at UMASS.
Question is will he turn out to be a POB or AB.

There's no way Lasme will be a POBust
if Nelson is even considering bringing him off the pine regularly...that's a lot more than Notorious POB ever earned

by sadleavy on Sep 18, 2007 5:30 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

There's also no way
He's going to be another Biedrins. For one thing, being 6'7" might handicap him just a bit.

9 rebounds and 3 blocks per game are not walking through that door, not next season anyway.

Not everyone can be Biedrins
but a LOT more people could be Adonal Foyle (as a player, not as a man of freedom)

by sadleavy on Sep 18, 2007 7:45 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

H'es going to become the next
Adonal Foyle. and I hope it happens. (except his stats will be like Adonal's SHOULD HAVE been.)

Well
I'm just wondering how Lasme would react if someone told him that he could be the next Adonal Foyle.  Just wondering...

he shouldn't mind
remember foyle had a monster contract

by StephenO4 on Sep 20, 2007 6:43 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

9 and 3 aren't walking through the door indeed
but some good rebounding and defense are, limited mostly by minutes, which in turn are limited by his offensive, um, limitations.

by mikej on Sep 22, 2007 8:36 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

which reminds me
of a felicitous moment in which one of the Road Warriors wheelchair hoops team said, in response to an interviewer, "Imitation limbs aren't limitations."  Pulling "imitation" out of the air, instead of "artificial," in that context, struck me as the mark of a true poet. We already know that those guys are the true warriors, and Ron Artest can say whatever he wants about that.

Questions
Good news concerning Lasme.  Does he have any sort of offensive game?  Shooting?  If he doesn't have a midrange j then i don't know if we'll get to see him and Biedrins on the floor together.... but if he does then I can't wait to watch those two work on the defensive end.

I think the Wright talk is one part motivation and one part the truth  on how raw he really is.  If he was more of a sure thing I'm not sure he slips to 8.

Did he say anthing about whether or not Biedrins is actually working on putting on those 20 pounds?

Thanks!
Some other notes, after listening to it:
  • He's totally gaga over Belinelli. Said he can do things "no one else in the league can do." I think all he's really going by is the LV summer league, but it's rare to hear him quite that hyperbolic.
  • We were in fact really close to getting Garnett. Listen carefully to the Alberto-Gonzalez tone when he says "I don't think so," and the way he quickly tries to change the subject. I think they really wanted him, went after him hard, and were pretty heartbroken when he went to Boston.
  • Victor Alexander was fat.

Nellie was foaming at the mouth
He's usually pretty honest about his players.  I laughed my ass off when i first read (heard?) that quote he had about Dunleavy being a pretty good 7th or 8th man in a rotation.  Finally, someone was honest about our pampered lotto pick.

To hear him excited about a player is really something.  Shame to hear that BWright Future may not be ready yet, although it's good to hear that Nellie is hoping that Wright will surprise him.

Conspiracy theory re: BWright/Lasme
Anyone else find it a little odd that he praised Lasme and dissed Wright, having seen so little of either?

Wright's worst case scenario as a player is probably Lasme's best case. Wright's just as capable a rebounder and shotblocker, but six years younger, much longer, miles more polished offensively, smoother and more athletic. His upside is probably somewhere between AK-47 and Bosh, whereas Lasme's upside is ... well, at age 25, more or less what he is now.

The conspiracy theory: Kirilenko is very much in our sights, in a package involving Monta and Harrington. Utah has expressed interest in Wright as a replacement for AK-47's defense, while we prefer to include Lasme. The solution: send Nellie out to talk up Lasme and his "NBA readiness."

Yeah, not bloody likely. Still, I think it's good policy to take anything Mulson says with a grain of salt. Remember "we'll never trade JRich..."

I too, am leary of Nelson's praise of Lasme
You have a guy, Lasme, who was 24 years old and playing in a poor division.  If he is NBA ready, he should have absolutely torn up that league.  I could see a parallel to Paul Milsap, who also played in a lower league and was drafted around the same position, but Milsap was also a great scorer and was younger.

I'm guessing Lasme will be able to play a few minutes at a time, at most, which means he'll be a 10-12 guy, at best.  Although if he can truly play great man-to-man defense, he could earn legitimate minutes.

I suspect Nelson's praise of Belinelli is legit, despite my weariness of his translated Euro stats.  One genuis of Nelson's is his ability to tell who will be able to fit his system.  He intimated that he was in on the Belinelli drafting decision.  We'll see how it transpires as the season progresses, but likely the Warriors are looking to plug Belinelli into the rotation.

LOL
does anybody give a better interview than Nellie? Doubt it, the guy is classic. The story about Big Vic with his lady, too much... LOL. God bless Nellie and welcome back for round 2.

sounds to me....
like Stephane Lasme = Gerald Wallace 2.0

2-3 blocks a game?
Can gaurd anyone?
6-7 athletic, tough, competitive, versatile swingman?

I seen the cat play for 3 mins maybe, and already Im starting to fall in love with the possibilities.

This is my team There are many like it But this one is mine. My team, without me is useless. Without my team, I am useless

I'm
with you on this one bro, ever since I saw ESPN play highlights of one of his triple doubles where he had it in points, rebounds and BLOCKS. I think last year he tallied 5 or 6 double digit block games and 4 or 5 more 9 block games. I don't care what level you play at, that's one hell of a rate. I was high on this kid before the draft and I was excited as hell to see us take him in the second round. I think he has HUGE potential. The most impressive thing about it is he doesn't have a ridiculous foul rate which shows me he knows how to play legit D. I can't wait for the season to start, this kid could turn out to be the steal of the draft.

It'd be an honor....
to buy nellie a beer and just hear him talk about his coaching experiences.  He's got so many good stories..

by ThermoElectro on Sep 19, 2007 3:11 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

would be well worth while
just please don't anybody buy Nellie even one more beer...we want him to make it through the whole season.  It's bad enough having Baron on the DL without having to add Nellie.
