OPEN THREAD: Game #37 - Warriors @ Grizzlies

Warriors (W-L): 20-16
Grizzlies (W-L): 10-25
Time: 7:30pm PST
TV: FSN Bay Area
Radio: KNBR 680

If you've been busy following the Warriors lately, you're with the rest of the GSoM crew. And if you're keeping up with the rest of the country you'll realize we are in the middle of one of the most influential and important political primaries in a very long time. Never have we seen a democratic race be comprised of some of the most talented candidates in a long time which stretches the imagination of the possibility and change our country is bleeding for.

Which got me thinking. Of the two teams facing off tonight, our beloved Warriors vs. the Memphis Grizzlies, which players do you think would make fine politicians? It's a shame I couldn't do this preview with Adonal Foyle on our team, but let's take a look what's at stake for tonight?

The Warriors are coming off a bad beat from the Portland Trailblazers while the Grizzlies are on the end of a back to back night.

Your Grizzlies and Warriors candidates after the jump.

Star-divide

Candidates for the Grizzlies:

Could this be another 2000 and 2004? Can we underestimate the power of the Grizzlies as a strong candidate pushes through? Here are the nominees:

Pau Gasol: He's the strong leader. Silent type that likes to use his actions more than words. Foreign policy is a plus. He uses his length to tangle defenders, block out, and grab rebounds. If he gets hot and pulls a lot of votes, we could be in trouble. Averaging 18 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 1.27 blocks per game, his campaign slogan is "With hair and a beard like this, I have all the lady and Hasselback fan votes locked up!"

Rudy Gay: Almost a Warrior during draft day, this second year player is the leading scorer on his team and slowly gaining national praise for his quick bursts to the basket and smooth game. At 19 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, Rudy uses the campaign slogan "Don't call me Stromile Swift!"

Mike Conley: Mr. Stud in college is having a decent rookie season waiting for a chance to breakout! Averaging 7.3 points per game with 4.6 assists, Mike is now the starting point guard using the campaign slogan "Progress Takes Patience".

And now for our Warrior Candidates:

Baron Davis: "Fear the Beard, Fear the Beard" is the slogan heard all over the Bay. This bad beard is going to wipe up Conley like no other and pour in 30+ points. Our leader of the Warrior party shouldn't have any problems getting votes.

Stephen Jackson: "I play with heart, so if you cross me I'll probably bite you". Not too popular with the soccer moms of the world, he is still one of the integral parts of this party and possibly the most important. What do you think?

Coach Nellie: The wisest candidate of them all could possible create matchups that would make it impossible for Memphis to win. With his care free attitude, his partying ways have made this coach a popular one. Look for twists in tonight game.

So who do you think will win tonight? Will it be the main candidates or do you think someone else as an independent will step up and win us over?
Check out our friends over at 3 Shades of Blue who did a great preview for tonight's game:

Predictions:

  •  Warriors by 6.
  •  Rudy Gay goes for 33 points.
  •  Ellis and Baron combine for 47.
  •  Wright starts and finishes the game w/ 20 minutes played.
  •  Mike Miller hits 4 three pointers.
  •  Darko has an average game

They better win tonight...
I'm tired of the Dubs losing what seems like basically every other game.  They need to really get their heads out of their rears and realize that if they don't start doing well NOW, they're not going to make the playoffs.  Coming out playing hard from the tip will help set the tone for this nice little set of winnable games they have coming up which couldn't come at a better time.

please establish dominance early
this is getting ridiculous with the slow starts. grizzlies are a bad team and give them no hope from the start. please start harrington nellie as he is the only that makes shots at the start of the game. we have been blownout in 3 of the last 4 games, it be nice to have a laugher for once.

wow
the dubs need to trade for the legend that is mark blount, hes got 27 through 3 quarters. maybe we can swing a deal for him and davis. blounts got a decent jumper and wont get absolutely abused like sjax was by aldridge and david west.

This guy is not a legend
He is all offense, and that's all he's been all of his career. Honestly, the only reason he's scoring a lot now is because when he is offof the court, the Heat have to rely on Earl Barron or Anthony Joel. Blocks? Barely 1. Rebounds? They'll settle at about 5 per game. Almost 0 defense, so get ready for a lot of dunkage.

Almost anybody can have career games for the Heat right now.

And, to further prove my point, we already have a Mark Blount on our team that can also rebound: Austin Croshere. Not to mention that Austin can shoot a 3 better than Mark Blount can.

So, lets say no.

why do we keep putting jack on bigger guys? against guys like dirk and tim thomas it works but against a guy with a post game it fails miserably.

I may not be an NBA expert but I know that the Grizzlies aren't good, lol. I have friends around Memphis and they share this with me a lot.

I do know how it's like for a team to play down to it's competition...hope that doesn't happen tonight.

Halftime thoughts
Well, we're dominating much more than the score indicates, which is a little worrisome- we blew some opportunities on the break thanks to shoddy decision making. Fortunately Memphis is that bad in transition defense, we can usually run it right back.

First off- Props to don nelson for going to his best frontline of Al, Biedrins, Jack.

Baron and Jack were stuck on Gay and Miller, and neutralized them. Our best perimeter defenders are plain better than their perimeter scores, so we win. Easy as pie. both Jack and Baron were GLUED to Miller and Gay, cheating through screens, jamming a face RIGHT up in their grills. Thats tough, veteran defense. I love it.

Harrington was pretty efficient- 8 pts, 6 boards, 2 asst. Poor decision making on the break lead to the 2 TO's, but he was shooting well and active on the glass against the twin towers, so yay Nellie for finally using him, yay Al for producing.

Second- Monta Ellis was built to play against the Grizz. They don't come back on defense and they have a mostly small backcourt. As a result he got any shot he wanted and knocked 'em all down, then had a spectacular block-run-finish for more points.

I cannot, however, ignore his porous defense on Navarro. Yeah the Conley block and Navarro steal were nice, but Navarro probably got back a good chunk of Ellis' offense- 16 points on 6 of 8 from the field. Ellis didn't realize he was guarding Navarro instead of Conley Lowry; you can't go under on Navarro, you have to chase him over the top of picks. He lost Navarro a few times, resulting in the floaters and 3's. I'll probably take the matchup either way since Navarro can't guard Ellis, but that's half the reason we're up 13 instead of 33.

The other half of the Grizz...Pau Gasol is good. Seriously. There's a reason the Grizz were a repeat playoff team a couple years ago, he's a very skilled big man. Biedrins played him pretty well, Gasol just made the buckets. Can't say much more than that, I give him credit.

Random:
What is a game thread without Pietrus stupidity. 3 fouls in 5 minutes, bricking a shot and a FT. One board and one point. What a waste of a roster spot.

Baron and Jack- on fire, didn't force anything. They exploited their mismatches and deferred when there was nothing. The only blemish is the Baron charge, but it's a crime of aggression in the open court and I can't fault him for that. Everything was awesome, and I've already pointed out their sparkingly defense.

D-leagers. Solid minutes from both. Watson had a needless touch foul for a Gasol and-1, then came back to hit a 3 to end the half. Otherwise, I thought he did a good job on both Lowry/Conley and Navarro; he chased Navarro off the 3p line and dared the other guys to shoot J's. Good recognition or good understanding of the game plan- either way it deserves a mention.

Monta
Does Monta's short game remind anyone else of Rip Hamilton?  The Warriors should run him of a couple screens for a curl right j like Rip.
I pray i never have to use a gun again.

by ssmokinjoe on Jan 11, 2008 10:10 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

not really
Rip's strength is the catch and shoot, no dribble or one dribble at most, usually laterally.

Ellis's strength is a pull-up J off a strong hard move going directly at his defender; he doesn't go side to side.

The biggest difference is that Ellis gets his shot off of his own move; Rip gets it while moving without the ball.

Given that Ellis' strength is finishing in transition or in the halfcourt cutting to the basket, I think running plays where he's curling and fading to find space for  J is a misuse of his abilities.

yup
Good point.  Ellis is actually money off that dribble to the right j move.  Rip is catch and shoot like Reggie Miller.  I guess the fact that not too many guys shoot that mid-range anymore like Monta and Rip made me draw the comparison.
I pray i never have to use a gun again.
