OPEN THREAD: Game #38 - Warriors vs Pacers - Welcome Home!

Warriors (W-L): 21-16
Pacers (W-L): 17-21
TV: FSN +
Radio: KNBR 680
Time: 6 pm
I won't lie. I've been waiting for this game for quite some time. Some old friends are coming home and I can only imagine the warm welcome they're going to get.
A Link to the Past
We'll definitely try to do a lengthier retrospective/ introspective on last year's 8 player deal between the Warriors and the Pacers soon, but for now these links should keep you more than busy (and entertained).

- Josh Powell (C)
- Ike Diogu and Keith "Who?" Mcleod (Double D+)
- Al Harrington (B)
- Stephen Jackson (A-)
2005-2006 Report Cards:
- Troy Murphy (C+)
- Ike Diogu (B-)
- Mike Dunleavy (D)
Believe It or Not
- The Pacers are the 7th highest scoring team in the league thus far at 103.1 ppg, but they give up 104.7 ppg. In case you were wondering the Warriors are 2nd at 108.4 ppg and surrender a league worst 107.1 ppg. Tonight's going to be a shootout- meaning the Warriors are going to shoot the Pacers out of the building.
- Holding down the 3rd worst spot in the league the Pacers let opposing teams shoot 38.1% from downtown against them. The Warriors lead the league in 3's attempted, so you do the math. Should be a fun one.
- Troy Murphy, the artist formerly known as T-Double, has had only 3 double-doubles in 33 games this year for the Pacers. GSoM friend Jim Barnett used to say about TMurph "He has a nose for the ball." I see him posting some huge rebound totals tonight in that tradition.
- After posting a career worst 28.3% 3pt rate with the Pacers last season after the trade, Mike Dunleavy has caught fire this season and is hitting trifectas at a 42.9%. Good for him, but it's a fluke. He's the shooter who can't shoot. Come back and talk to me in mid-April when the Pacers have missed the playoffs for the second straight season and we'll revisit his 3pt %.
- Ike Diogu was supposed to be set free by the trade to the Pacers, but he's actually played less minutes under Jim O'Brien than he did under Nellie at this point in the season. (This might not be a fair comparison however because Ike's been injured for a huge chunk of this season).
Don't miss our ongoing Q&A with Indy Cornrows for more on the Pacers and the trade that helped bring us the We Believe Movement.
BOOleavy
As somewhat expected, the "winner" by a landslide (or should we say Dunslide?) of the GSoM poll that run for less than two days prior to tonight's showdown was Mr. Excuseleavy:

A few of you randomly voted for Jeff Foster who the Warriors selected with the 21st pick in the 1999 NBA Draft, which I think think is completely uncalled for. Seriously, explain yourselves. Haha how can you boo a guy who never once gave the Warriors lazy minutes or poor focus? I can't name a single time. Can you?
For some fun- or make that not-so-fun- history on former notable Warriors making their return to the Bay check out GSoM friend Tim Kawakami's piece The big return of Dunleavy and Murphy won’t be anything like Arenas, Webber or Sprewell for Warriors fans [Talking Points- SJ Mercury]
5 Reasons Why This Should Be an Easy W
- Andris Biedrins should be able to put up 15 easy puts tonight against the porous Pacer D. If the Pacers stick Murphy and his absence of any lateral movement on him for major minutes, bump that number up to 25. Simply put, the Pacers aren't athletic enough and are too slow to keep up with the Dubs. I won't even get into the kind of damange Monta Ellis should be able to wreak on them in transition with Baron Davis, Matt Barnes, and Al Harrington QBing.
- The Pacers have no answer for Baron Davis. Expect a big night. All Star numbers gauranteed.
- Aside from Jermaine O'Neal the Pacers are even softer than the Warriors inside.
- The Pacers are on the second night of a back to back thousands of miles away from home. Last night they took out the Kings by 6. See Pacers 111, Kings 105: Small Was The Call [Indy Cornrows] and The View From Section214, 1/12 [Sactown Royalty].
- Warrior fans at the Roaracle and at home watching TV are going to cheer on Stephen Jackson and Al Harrington against their former team. We will do our part in making sure they get this W. We Believe it's going to be a playoff atmosphere at the Roaracle tonight.
I'm sorry, but there's absolutely no excuse whatsoever for the Warriors not to win this game. NONE.
Predictions
- Warriors have a 30 point blowout of the Pacers heading into the 3rd quarter, but intentionally decrease the point differential to 17 in honor of the January date of the trade as they pick up this W.
- Stephen Jackson goes 20-4-5
- Troy Murphy puts up a meaningless double-double
- Al Harrington hits 4+ treys.
- TMurph and We Like Ike get more cheers than boos from the Roaracle crowd.
- A few people randomly try to heckle former Warrior Jeff Foster much to my dismay.
- Mike Dunleavy has another triple-single.
- Ike Diogu plays less minutes than 102.9.
- Dunleavy breaks down crying in appreciation from all the welcome back cheers and love Warrior fans give him.
- Dunleavy tries to post up Monta Ellis, but fails miserably.
- Dunleavy airballs at least 2 three's.
- Dunleavy gives us plenty of Funleavy Foto Fun for the recaps tonight and Wednesday night!
- After the refs call him for an obvious foul Dun tosses his jersey into the stands and throws a tantrum while being ejected. Just like good old times.
The guy who put on the Dunleavy jersey in this clip is officially banned from Warriors Nation FOE LIFE.

Uh?
No pun, but I'm getting jazzed
There were three games this year I've really looked forward to: Pacers, Celtics, and Bobcats. I'll root as hard for Jason as I'll boo Dunleavy because the former was all heart and the latter no heart at all.

The ball movement is atrocious, and the rotation isn't much better in the lineup. Pietrus and Barnes are just liabilities.
Biedrins isn't right tonight, but worse, our defense is nonexistent. Where are the double teams and aggressive blitzing?
Baron and Jack bricking FT's isn't helping either.

nailbiter
Exhibit 1: toward the end of the 2q, rising for a J with a hand in his face, realizing he made a mistake, dishing it off to...no one. Ball gets tipped. Ellis stands around, Pacers recover the not-really-that-loose ball and score an easy one.
Exhibit 2: Half-ending play. Travis Diener (Yeah, Travis Diener) runs the full length of the court for a layup, with Ellis a bystander the whole way. We had a foul to give, but really, Ellis can run circles around Diener. There's no excuse.
Then Tinsley decides to punk Ellis, and BOY WAS I HAPPY. I saw something I've never seen:
Ellis stepped up into Tinsley's grill.
Seriously, Ellis has had hard fouls before, but he usually curls up on the floor. This time, he was actually mad, and I loved it. The only thing better would have been if Ellis had actually knocked Tinsley on his butt, but thats why we have Barnes.
Anyways, rest of the game Ellis' brain shut off and it was just instinct. Dunk, over Dunleavy, endless midrange J's in Tinsley's face, the first game saving tip in, and both FT's on the Flagrant-1.
Well done. Included in the $13M demand that Ellis' agent will be submitting to Mullin will be a request that a Jamaal Tinsley mural be painted inside the Warriors locker room. Inspiration. We can also put Barbosa ones in the training room during pre-game workouts.
Where would I also be without a shoutout to Biedrins for his Willis Reed impersonation. Clearly he was a step slow all night, not quite limping, but less mobile and springy than usual. In the first he just didn't have it, but Nellie sprung him on Jermaine in the final 5 minutes or so. Result: 1 steal, 2-3 stops, the final game-saving tip-in. Two fouls that he didn't really deserve; Barnes left Dunleavy a red carpet to the lane, Jermaine barrelled in on the other. Otherwise, he did what Harrington and Croshere strguggled to do.
Note how dependent we were on the 3P all night? That's the lack of Biedrins rolling inside effecting our game. Its also why we could use another mobile backup C (cro is really a PF).
Biedrins has had virtually perfect health since he's been here, so we kinda take him for granted, but really, his absence was noticeable.
Other points:
Baron Davis. Spectacular scoring, a couple poor turnovers I bet he'd like back, atrocious FT shooting (he's not the only culprit).
Stephen Jackson. I really think we won inspite of him tonight. Here's the problem when he's on offense: we isolate him too much. He's useful in certain matchups, like against smaller, weaker guys, but ...he's not Paul Pierce, he's not Caron Butler. He's simply too in efficient to be a "go-to" one on one guy, where you feed him regardless of the matchup.
Danny Granger is a superior defender; honestly, what do we really gain by clearing a side and giving him the ball? The Pacers would probably live with that matchup all night- i'm not a fan of doing exactly what the other team wants, or doing what they'll happily accept. We had better options (Ellis, Baron) most of the game. He didn't even bring his FT shooting tonight, and Dunleavy and Granger put up good scoring nights against him.
Azubuike had fine work on the glass, as usual, and hit yet another dagger 3 in the 4thQ...also as usual. Really, I hate him as a backup SF, but you got to have him on the floor late in games, he's just a stone cold killer. He also had pretty good defense I thought on Granger/Daniels/Rush.
Barnes...was in the appropriate role: enforcer and hustle man. Giving him any more responsibility is just stupid, but when all he has to do is bring toughness (tying up Granger) and energy (tipping the board to Baron), then he is fine. I wouldn't pay the MLE for that, though.
Harrington. Owned by Jermaine quite a few times, played decent but not great defense in a poor matchup for him (against a bigger, but equally quick Jermaine). Hit a few shots, but not nearly enough. Not sure what else he could h ave done, given that he was forced into major C minutes.
Pietrus sucks man. Seriously, he sucks. His "defense" rep is completely and utterly undeserved and an insult to all people that play defense. He's a reach-in foul before he even checks in.
We picked up a game on Portland tonight, but NOH and LAL just refuse to lose.

The Lakers
Odom has been solid offensively, but his assists have really dipped, and his health is always in flux.
Mihm is a servicable physical big man; Brown brings the defense.
Bynum, however, is the only one of them that brings both offense and defense. He's been a stud in the post this year, as well as a great rebounder and shotblocker.
Without Bynum they're forced into even more of a platoon system which, of course, won't be nearly as effective.
Never to wish career-ending injury on someone, but if he were to rest the rest of the season to PRESERVE his career, I wouldn't complain.

F**K REFS!!!
Bynum
In last night's game against Memphis, the Lakers almost instantly blew a fairly comfortable lead the moment he went down. The way he'd been playing the last few weeks, you'd have to consider Lakers a legit championship contender. (You forgot to mention Turiaf among their big men -- understandable given how ridiculously deep they are up front).
It would royally suck for him if the knee thing were serious, but it would at least mometarily assuage my growing feelings of regret, anger, and horror that we picked Ike freaking Diogu over him. Imagine AB#1 and AB#2 in the same frontcourt? Sigh.
Anyway, godspeed, Bynum ... I guess.

AB
"He injured himself in the last game toward the end. I wasn't supposed to reenter him into that game but I did anyway because I needed him to win so I took a gamble and he could hardly walk yesterday and was pretty sore today. But we survived another great game by Jermaine O'Neal. His shot blocking bothered us and it was a tough night for our team. I pushed the envelope by inserting Andris back in the game. I just thought I had to do it to win so I took a gamble. It's not a major injury, but it's one where he probably couldn't perform that well. "

And he won the game for us, amazing steals, amazing layups and shots.
Thank you Jamaal Tinsley, for committing that flagrant foul and basically got the Warriors into the game.
On the the slow starts...
Its amazing how underated the effect of knowing who you're playing next to day in day out. There's a crispness to it that the warriors just seem lack early on in games.
I just think that Nelly should have set starting line up and save his matchup moves for after the opening tip off.

"And after the Warriors finished their 106-101 comeback victory Sunday night over Dunleavy and his Indiana Pacers, the much-reviled forward confirmed that the feeling is mutual.
"I wouldn't want it any other way," said Dunleavy, who spent his first 4 1/2 NBA seasons with the Warriors. "I couldn't care less. It's hard to pay attention and care about something somebody says when you have no respect for them. They can do whatever they want." "
