Recap: Warriors 121, Nets 119 - An Emotional Rollercoaster

Phew!!!

Nothing comes easy in Warrior-land. Nothing.

"Who the hell is this Ellis kid?!"

Box Score

Let me put this in perspective. Boom racked up an incredible triple-double tonight. Monta hit his career high with an outrageous 39 point performance. TMNT dipped his ice cold hand in a cauldron of fire and rained 3 after 3 after three in the third and fourth, ending with 19 after a very slow start. Jax restrained himself from downtown (in a manner of speaking) and played a more reserved higher percentage post game.

And we still only won this game by 2 points! Hell even in the waning seconds of the game with a 5 point lead, Nachbar BANKS a 3-pointer to bring it within 2?! WHY?!

Because it is our destiny. As Warriors fans, I'm finally convinced that we will never be able to sit back and relax. We will never be able to change the channel after the 3rd because our game is "in the bag". We are forever destined to pull at our hairs, clench our fists, yell at our televisions, pray for free throws, offer high fives up to our dogs, weep like little children, and every so often on a night like tonight, throw our fists in the air in triumph.

Yea... I wouldn't have it any other way. Make the jump and decide for yourself.

Star-divide

For the purposes of this recap, I'm going to forget about my feelings on how the Warriors should be dominating the Nets. This is far easier for me to do than with almost any other sub .500 team because I'm not entirely convinced that we should be able to step on the court and dispose of New Jersey anytime we want. On paper, the Nets have a very respectable team and I'm not entirely sure that their now 18-24 record reflects their threat level.

That being said, I think it's safe to say that tonight's game was an emotional rollercoaster. For a channel that bears the slogan "We Know Drama", TNT could not have picked a better game to air on national television. And yes, I fully acknowledge that I wouldn't say that last sentence if the game swung in the Nets' direction.

But it didn't.
So I did.
So there!

First and foremost, it was great to see the Warriors actually come out in the first quarter with a spark. After so many 1st quarters wasted in recent games, Monta was in superb form with 12 points on 6 for 9 shooting, Boom was already carving into his triple double with 3 boards, 4 dimes, and 7 points, Jax had 5 and Barnsie had 6. And we saw that it was good.

As the 2nd quarter came on, our boys continued their efficiency on the floor, but it was truly the Vinsanity show out there. I have to be honest; in recent years I had not been fortunate enough to catch Vince back in his prime form. Even tonight, in the wake of his 29 point smack-down, the announcers could pass up a chance to talk about the decline in Carter's game. (A fact that many of you astutely pointed out in tonight's open thread!)

Granted the only time I really get a chance to watch Vince is when he is on local TV but tonight Carter was in rare form. His final play aside, he was making some crazy buckets out there so mad props to Vinsanity. Its performances like tonight from players like him that make me want to order League Pass. Unfortunately, "want" and "afford" are two different things.

bum

"Spare some change for NBA League Pass?"

In the 3rd quarter, things got a little... um... interesting. Had we lost this game tonight, you can be sure that far more of this recap would be dedicated to events that transpired in the 3rd. Actually, there's a pretty good chance that this will be the case despite the win.

Let me just start by saying that Josh Boone's air balled free throw was the one of the greatest thing I had ever seen in my life. I'm talking about finding a $20 bill in your jacket pocket great. I'm talking about a Zachary's Stuffed Spinach and Mushroom pie great. I may not be able to hit a free throw to save my life, but I damn sure promise you that I can hit the rim 100 out of 100 times. Hell if that's what it took to get into the NBA, sign me up and give me a shoe deal! (Air Hash has a nice ring to it!)

Zacharys-Pizza

Oh yea. It was THAT good. Almost...

But all joking aside, Boone's poor free throw shooting does bring into question Nellie's tactic of instantly fouling the kid every time the Nets had a possession. At the time that Nellie sent in Marco to hack away at this poor dejected soul (how frustrated with Boone with the whole ordeal?), the Nets weren't exactly running away with the game. Which begs the questions, "How necessary was it to execute a tactic like this?" Again, many of you echoed my exact thoughts in the Open Thread, indicating that Nellie was inadvertently slowing down the tempo of the game. And not in our favor.

At the end of the whole fouling ordeal, Boone walked away a slightly better free throw shooter, the Dubs walked away down by 8, and the rhythm of our players was thrown off for the remainder of the quarter. One can only assume that Nellie's hacking tactic stemmed from his lack of faith in our ability to defend a Nets possession. In one hand he has our defense; in the other, a 30-something percent free throw shooter. Ironically, our most dismal defense seemed to rear its ugly head immediately after the fouling had subsided.

As the 3rd came to a close, Carter, and Jefferson (combining for 20+ points in the 3rd alone) lead the Nets to an 8 point lead and we were all left with the all too familiar feeling of, "Dear god... not again..."

But the 4th quarter... the 4th was the quarter of heroes. With brick after brick and turnovers at key times, the Warriors went on an amazing 22 - 0 run and in doing so, brought out their most potent weapon yet. The crowd.

The Arena was electric, and the Dubs were feeding right off of it. Even after the Nets pulled their own little mini run, Monta and Kabuki stepped to the plate and did what all good teams need to do in the waning seconds of a close game. THEY MADE THEIR FREE THROWS!! (You see how easy that was?!)

All in all, tonight was a refreshing win. Big ups to the Nets for yet another great matchup and most importantly...

ENORMOUS PROPS FOR TO TONY.PSD FOR GETTING HIS CHARLES BARKLEY SIGN ON TNT! (see open thread!) For those of you that missed it, I'm not talking about his sign being in the background shot of some sweeping camera shot. These guys filmed a close-up of his sign and aired it right after the second quarter ended as they were talking about the halftime show. And to add to it, Sir Charles himself was talking about how much he dug the sign as they were showing it!

It's always a proud day for us when one of the crew gets a little national exposure so feel free to echo my congratulations to Tony in the comments.

wonder

Ellis goes for a career high 39 points while Boom chalks in a triple double with 12 boards, 10 dimes and 25 points? If this isn't a tie, I don't know what is. What do you think?! (Cap tip to TMNT for heating up at the right time tonight!)

here's a torrent
http://bt.davka.info/
They have a pretty good set of NBA games, although whether it's an ESPN, FSN, TNT, or Chinese CCTV-5 broadcast is pretty much a crapshoot.

well
obviously if its in english its tnt or espn.. if its in chinese cctv-5. I dont think they have FSN on there cause FSN is leaguepass.

harrington
should get the warrior wonder.

he was the key to the win when he was raining down threes in the 4th and brought us back into position to eventually win the game.

by jchao204 on Jan 25, 2008 12:59 AM PST   0 recs

It's gotta be Monta
Without his clutch free throw shooting in the fourth (not even to mention his 39 big ones), Nachbar's ridiculous 3 would have actually mattered.  And we would have all cried.  And Chuck would have clowned on us.

Right before they cut to TNT studios and they showed Tony.psd's SUPERBALLIN' sign, my buddies and I gave each other more high fives than probably any other point in the game.  So awesome.

then we will fight in the shade.

ugh
super happy for the win tonight, 1st time poster, all my life dub supporter. been a GSOM activist awhile now,  loving this team, monta with the HUGE game, and big al coming up huge in the 4th, and baron as always with key buckets, capt. jack mia but at least overall a solid game (more so 7 assiists), i guess im comfortable enough with this teams 4th quater d that i cant trip about them not really playing it much in the 1st half. only thing to really say is coming home from celebrating at my local bar(MCNALLYS) can i please not be reading the recap and have a ZACHARYS pizza pic, since i work in the kitchen and see hundreds of pizzas a week. GO DUBS!

by devfux on Jan 25, 2008 2:11 AM PST   0 recs

That picture made me want to cry
I WANT ME SOME OF THAT!!!

It's hard being so far away... it used to be just down the block, now it's across the country.  And the only deep dish they've got over here is some crap named "Sicilia's" which makes dry, oily pizza with almost no sauce...

:'-(

I cracked up.....
When they displayed the sign at half time.  Truly hilarious.  Very accurate portrait of tubby.

Did anyone else notice the lack of Diddy coverage during the game.  They did show the shirt, but there was no talk of his triple-double in the post game show, not one word.  Hows a guy supposed to get to the all star game if he can't get any air time after a triple double.  Good Lord!!

Props to all those like myself that voted A.I. into the All Star game.  That kicks out Tracy "My Back Hurts" McGrady, and gives Baron the chance to be picked.  It will be a crime if he is not chosen, however somewhat motivating at the same time I would think post all star break.

Go Dubs!!  I Still Believe!!

Tony vs. Barkley
Charles seemed vindictive shunning Baron, and why did Magic not defend him?  Bowin down to big mouth and tummy Barkley?  Baron has answered all his critics in playing every game and finishing in the top three in minutes.  He is a complete point guard and is a veteran, not like Roy, Paul or Williams.  He makes the team, plain and simple.
However, Charles didn't complain about the sign and rather was as blown away as the rest of the world on its quality and poignancy.  My vote for "Most Likely to Succeed" is cast for Mr.Psd.  Making "special" is what we should all do, whether its throwaway posts, writing recaps or making head-turning art.  Charles was a top 50 player no doubt, and he did it with his motor not his gifts.  He had the will to make the play and get the job done.  As a commentator, he has not quite found the groove and picked a fight with the wrong people.  We want to win him over.  He probably won't be defending Dunleavy any time soon, right?  He tells it like "he" sees it.  Why can't he acknowledge that these Warriors are special.  Does he not see the killer instinct he possessed since rookie year?  Let the conflict continue until either Tony (us) or Barkley (them) BELIEVE.

4th qtr comeback
I was at the game last night and had a good time. sec 204. I'll give the WW to Monta. Consistent play and clutch free throws to seal it, plus he was hurting on that last trip to the stripe. Sure Big Al spurred the run but he didn't do much before the 4th. He was just a spark off the bench.

I recorded the game on dvr so I gotta check out tnt zooming in on tony's sign.

DVR?
If there is any way you can get the segment where the sign was shown on YouTube we'd really appreciate it. Not sure if it's easy to get video off of those hard drives though.

unsure
I've never been successful at extracting any video from the thing. It's one of those comcast dvr's, and I don't think I have the proper cables. Best I could do is use my camera while it's playing haha

great game!  I loved the sign and knew is was Tony's the moment I saw it.  Major props.  I love how Sjax is reserving his shots a little bit for other players like Monte.  Monte should be taking more shots than Jax EVERY game.

boards
Rebounding by committee has been our forte (and downfall) forever.  It seems that we're living and dying based on the effort and intelligence we set forth each night.

Isn't there someone on our bench hungry enough to bring the tenacity that a Boone, Milsap, Turiaf, Bass etc. contest us with every single night??

I honestly miss J-Rich more and more for this reason alone.  Even though his offense struggled last season, I recall his dive-bombing in the lane grabbing some much needed boards.

last night was far too close considering NJ's poor shooting.

WTF Nelli
the whole hack-a-shaq strategy was reeeeediculous

took us out of our own flow and put us behind the 8 ball which necessitated the great comeback

imagine what Monta might do in a half court offensive set where someone gives him some screens ala Hamilton in detroit

think Baron was motivated to get that triple?!

by hardcore on Jan 25, 2008 9:06 AM PST   0 recs

Vince Carter
I have to say that IMO its not that Vince's game has lost something - it's that he doesn't try that hard. This is the same guy who admitted that he didn't play hard in Toronto. It seems that he and JKidd are looking to get out of New Jersey and they both know it won't happen as long as they are in the playoff hunt (http://blog.nj.com/netsblast/2008/01/the_allstar.html). In other words this losing streak is not surprising. It would have been doubly embarrassing to give this one away.

by triplesix on Jan 25, 2008 9:37 AM PST   0 recs

He has lost something
physically
Easy to see

by Zig on Jan 25, 2008 11:51 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

Age has changed
but the stats and the ability are the same. His game has not lost anything... physically the difference between 31 and 21 is obvious I agree. Not dunking on people is a progression that all NBA players go through in their careers - it's not necessarily indicative that they are somehow worse players than they used to be.

by triplesix on Jan 25, 2008 12:17 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

good win but
our defense is just terrible.

by B Randon on Jan 25, 2008 9:52 AM PST   0 recs

A Win is a Win
I think every game can be viewed from both sides and as Warriors fans we cannot get too greedy.  Yes the Nets are a mediocre team and the W's barely beat them, but the W's are not the Spurs/Mavs/Pistons, they do not have a huge margin of error.

WW should be Monta, he was the one who got the W's going and then put it away.  His J is the most consistent on the W's right now (SJax needs some more energy or something).  Baron gets a lot of credit though for going to the glass and getting tough rebounds.

Andris, where are you?  Somehow the W's have lost sight of him; remember when he got 20?

Harrington was huge, that's just Al though, just enough to tease you.  Harrington gets the most blocking fouls on the team, maybe in the league.  Dude, you are 6'9", challenge a shot or two.

Vinsanity?  All hype now.  Yes he made some shots last night, but he's creaky now and just does not play hard off the ball, either on O or D.  Sad.

Nothing better than "The City".

by philsmith75 on Jan 25, 2008 10:06 AM PST   0 recs

Warriors are having a good year
but this seemed to me to be a perfect game for BWright who could match with Boone

I am really tired of Matt Barnes at power forward and Nelson switching the starting line-up to match the other team

Also it is concerning that to even be in the game against Minn Jax has to hit a few wild ass 3's and in this game to get back into it AL had to hit a 3 wild ones and they needed a 22 point run

This shouldn't have been a tough game but they needed to play their starters heavy minutes and rely on wild 3 point shooting

They seem to have lost something this year at home.  When was the last time they just ran someone off the home floor?

by Zig on Jan 25, 2008 11:56 AM PST   0 recs

Barnes is playing better lately
I have been critical of him, and Nelson, for his play esp at "PF" but he really is playing well, and last night you could see him anticipating the action on the floor and being very productive

the thing
what bothers me is

Nelson:

We tried not to run anything complicated, just kind of simple stuff. I just told the guys what we were doing in the coverages and it sure helps to make shots. I think some of things we talked about at halftime and in the huddle worked. We really started delivering the ball to the open man and Al Harrington started to make his three and pretty soon we were off and going. But they're a proud bunch of guys and they fought back and made it a very tight ballgame.

every time when Warriors tries "not to run anything complicated" it is "a very tight ballgame"

build a team & destroy the roof

by Lat We N Trash on Jan 25, 2008 1:39 PM PST   0 recs

when have we EVER run anything complicated?
the most complicated Nelson play is the pick & roll - what the hell is he talking about?

all too true...i blame the Ws for over a decade of ulcers, liver damage and no fingernails

went to last night's game and it was fun at the end but what was up with the crowd through most of the game?! It was one of the worst crowds i've witnesses i at oracle. I was nowhere near quiet though, so...

oh and how long before monta is a household name?

We Know.

by saraluvsbaron on Jan 25, 2008 4:51 PM PST   0 recs

I agree
I was like when is the crowd going to get into it? This is embarassing. OH and the BOOs. Even when the W's were terrible, I never heard fans boo

big WOZ!
as an official bay area nerd-ette, did anyone else saw mr. greatness STEVE WOZ at the game last nite? he was to the right (facing the backboard) of the nets bench. so awesome, such a cool dude.

BTW props to the poster being shown on TNT. that was great. I still get irritated at the inside the NBA highlitghts, there was no, none at all, good highlights from the warriors, everything was on how the nets didnt pull it toghether. baaaah. Also what is Barkley saying, "oh these are 2 teams that can run the court..." YA RITE I wanna see those fools catch up to monta and the crew, makes them look worst than robert Parish.
