RECAP: Warriors 106, Knicks 104 - It's Never Easy

Final Boxscore

I don't know how you do it either Jax

Wow. I guess this is just how it has to be. No easy wins. They make you yell at the tv in frustration but also scream in celebration as they roll off one of their runs. Sometimes I think I should just avoid watching the first 3 quarters so my blood pressure doesn't go through the roof. And it seems that no matter what happens in those first 3 quarters, it doesn't affect the 4th. The Warriors could be playing horribly through 36 minutes but come out in the 4th and just light it up. Tonight, the Warriors stepped it up in the 4th and take the win right from the Knicks' grasp. Your recap after the jump.

Star-divide

Andris Biedrins, Rebounding Machine
I have to start this recap off by congratulating Beans on his tremendous performance. 26 rebounds! He had 10 in the first quarter alone! He now owns this year's NBA season high for rebounds in a single game. I just can't get over how many rebounds he had. He was just all over the glass tonight. He constantly fought for position in the paint, tipped rebounds to himself, and just outhustled many of the Knick and Warrior players. If not for Beans tonight, the Knicks blow out the Warriors because they would have got killed on the glass.

Even though he didn't get a blocked shot tonight, I thought Biedrins did a good job of challenging shots in the paint forcing misses while staying out of foul trouble. He picked up just 4 fouls in 41 minutes despite having to come over and challenge every drive in the lane.

Some Rebounding Help Please?
On the other hand, my goodness, can somebody help Beans in the paint? Or can we get some help for him? When Beans wasn't grabbing a rebound it seemed like one of the Knicks was. They're a scrappy team when only one of Eddy Curry and Zach Randolph are in the game. Throwing out the Mardy Collins/ Quentin Richardson, Jamal Crawford, David Lee, Renaldo Balkman, and Zach Randolph lineup really seemed to give the Warriors problems. When they do that, they're big at all the positions. Not necessarily the most talented offensively, but they scrap, hustle, and go after rebounds and loose balls. Much of their damage came in the 2nd quarter when Biedrins would go to help on defense and the rest of the team either couldn't box out or simply were outmuscled and thus outrebounded. A second big man would have sure helped stop the run that the Knicks made in that 2nd quarter. Maybe signing CWebb will help the rebounding situation.

Stephen Jack and the 4th Quarter
Okay, this is just getting ridiculous. He stinks it up in the first 3 quarters with his poor handle (5 TO's), shot that gets easily blocked (3 times), and poor shooting, 3-10 from the field and 1-5 from 3. Then the 4th quarter started and he decided to shoot the Warriors in the arm with a little adrenaline. All in the span of a few minutes, he literally brought the Warriors back from being down 4 with 10:28 to play, to being up 3 with 8:19 to play. First he took Crawford to the hole for a layup and then the basket got really really wide. He hit 3 straight 3's out of nowhere and just lit the arena on fire. I don't know how he just does it. He represents exactly what the Warriors are though. Play poorly for 3 quarters but when that 4th quarter hits and the stars come out to shine, Jax shows up.

Questionable coaching decisions...

The Krispy Kreme Twins
Throughout the 2nd and 3rd quarters, Randolph and Curry barely played on the floor together mainly because Curry was sitting on the bench. In those two quarters, the Knicks beat the Warriors by a total of 12 points. So what does the wonderful coach of the Knicks do in the 4th? He plays them together for the first 6 minutes. Then what do the Warriors do? Simply outscore the Knicks by 9 points to take a 6 point lead. Maybe this is why the "Fire Isaiah" chants started - poor coaching decisions.

New York Hustle
I gotta give props to Lee, Balkman, and Robinson tonight. They seemed to be all over the place for the Knicks. Lee had 13 boards in 23 minutes. Balkman picked up 2 steals, 3 blocks, and some excellent D on Baron and whoever else he was matched up with. You have to know where these two are at all times when the shot goes up because they just go after the rebounds, either grabbing it themselves or tipping it to teammates. I just don't understand why these two don't get more playing time. If these two were allowed to develop on the court, you might have two solid role players. Robinson has been playing and he's playing well. He dropped 22 tonight adding in 8 assists. At times he made some ridiculous layups and ran the team well. These three young guys all look solid and once again prove that Isaiah can draft - he just can't do much else that well - including coaching.

DRIVE!

DRIVE!

DRIVE!

Drive! Drive! Drive!
These 3's are killing me - 3-22 at the end of the 3rd quarter. On two pointers, they were shooting around 54%. Jax got hot in the 4th, but perhaps the Warriors don't have a 3 point deficit if they don't shoot so much from beyond the arc. What compounds my frustration is that the Knicks are not a good defensive team, in fact they're one of the worst. Check it out:

  • Opposing teams shoot 48% against them
  • Randolph has 6 blocks - on the entire year.
  • Eddy Curry averages 0.5 blocks per game.

They're not going to block shots so attack the rim against these guys! C'mon. Drive and shoot, drive and dump to Beans or drive and kick. Too many three's and not enough aggressiveness. They got lucky tonight and got away with being way off on their three's tonight.

Looking Forward
The Warriors have played well enough over the last stretch going 8-3 in their last 11 games. They have a favorable February coming so this hot streak can continue. But it will start with a tough quick road trip, first on Tuesday at Houston and then at New Orleans on Wednesday. With things being so tight in the West, being 9 games over .500 doesn't even give them a solid cushion over the 9th and 10th teams in the West.

Andris Biedrins
In addition to his 26 rebounds, throw in the 11 points on 4-6 shooting and he's got himself another double double.

BEANS
Doin' Thangs in the paint. it helps that Curry "doesn't jump."

the thing i noticed about this game was barons apparent lack of focus throughout. He got his usual 20 plus and 9 dimes but his shooting was generally poor.

Once again AB does work and Jackson shows up with 3 mins to go...phew.

Everyone MINUS ANDRIS (and maybe monta) definately had it on cruise control tonight.

baron
doesn't really seem toshow up to games in his true dominating form unless either Alba is there or its a national broadcast. At least thats what it seems like to me.

see... lakers game(2 big 3s at the end), chicago game(rediculous 3 point shooting in the third), spurs game(challenged bowen with good results), nets game(triple double).

Epiphany!
Cap'n Jax plays like ish the 1st 3 quarters by his own DESIGN...

You gotta feel me on this one...  He plays like trash early in games to give the opposing team a false sense of security for the 4th quarter, where he can blow up in the money quarter against 1on1 or 1onNONE defense...

Or maybe he's just a streaky @ss MFer...

Best duo since...

wouldn't
that be some dope conspiracy...you know Nellie and his mind games, well maybe he has such a long leash on Capt Jack because he understands the psychology of it all...or, like you said, hes one streak @ss MFer...either way, it works out for the Dubs...

They seemed
really content with all the 3's they missed for 3 quarters and played really relaxed, even when they knew they can just drive in and score (or for sure draw fouls) because the fat duo of New York cannot defend (move). It was frustrated, for sure, but at least they won, and in the end that's all that matters. Let's hope they don't do that against the Rockets and especially the Hornets.
Seriously, 9 games above .500 and we're only at #7 by .5 game, crazy enough.

The Beanstalk
gets 20-10 every game.  I just figured it was 20 points, not 20 boards...

then we will fight in the shade.

the game....
i went to my first game of the season this year, i was juiced to say we won... of course but dang we were totally on cruise control throughout the 1st three quarters...

some things i'll point out

al harrington - cold for the longest time
ab - i swear he rebounded everything tonight
baron - normal key to the game but streaky
monta - solid playing, keepin it hot hot hot
watson - im impressed and want to see more
jackson - tearin up the 3's at the 4th

but anyways you all know that..

random thing:
i was at wingstop after the game and Pietrus was ordering, I took a pic with him..

haha dope!

now i met ellis, harrington, and pietrus

now if only i could add barnes and davis to that list.

anyways, im new to GSOM

but i read this forum all the time, and i think it'll be dope if i meet some other hardcore fans

who sits on the right side of section 225... those people are LOUD, and i want to be there next game haha.

Ugly but better than a Loss
The Knicks are simply awful.  Very rarely did you see the Knicks actually make a stop or good defensive play.

Nate Robinson was a dynamo going to the rack but a couple of out of control TOs too.

Lee knows how to rebound but he is so afraid to shoot, even when he gets it 8 ft away.

Really disappointed in Harrington, Baron and SJax (except for the 4th qtr); they did not display any urgency.  Baron made a couple of huge plays down the stretch but he seemed willing to gamble on D and not hustle on the glass or on D.  He's great so I'll give him a pass but it was not a good performance.  Al, how about a rebound in traffic?   A strong defensive challenge at the  rim?  A strong finish at the rim?

Biedrins rebounded and was very efficient offensively.  Defensively, he still has to learn body positioning when challenging a shot; too many times he's not squaring up to the shooter which leads to contact and an automatic foul.  He's young, I'm pretty sure he'll learn.

Warriors won because the Knicks are awful in transition, especially when Curry and Randolph are in, when the W's got a rebound with those two in, I literally said "goodbye" because the W's were going to fastbreak and get an easy bucket.

Nothing better than "The City".

My first game in years, Jack won the game for us
...well, and Isaiah

I  was screaming my head off at the O last night, but the crowd was too tame.  Oh well, I let it be known that I am fan whether I am yelling at the tv.

Jackson nutted the threes in the 4th to put us up, but he also played some mad D on Crawford.  Crawford was killing Monta and others in the 2nd and 3rd.  His shot was falling inside and out, but Jax stepped up and shut him down in the 4th, held him to 4 points.

That and Isaiah taking his hustle players off the court in crunch time.  Zach Randolph should never play from what I saw last night.  He just doesn't care.

Little Hard on Beidrins after 26 boards
phil, you have no odea how frustrating it is to watch the Knicks interior defense with Eddy-Zach in the game after so many years of Ewing-Oakley-Mason... it is painful

Some points re Last Night
Since Jack -- lately, anyway -- looks so comparatively lost in the first half (he had four of his five TOs in Q1 alone), I suggest two remedies: first, start him but pull him six minutes in if his game just doesn't merit it; second, insist that he NOT shoot off the dribble, and limit his "catch and shoots" to where he has time to set and square up. Simple fixes, really, and would put an end to at least 4-5 dribble-bad shot misses a game.

Then, leave Monta alone. He's really coming into his own -- literally carrying Jack and BD in the first half of games -- and he's showing a toughness (What? 8 boards last night?  Why that's Jack and Al combined) that is terrific to observe. He's been the best, most consistent force on the W's for weeks now, and likely will continue in this role until Jack and BD (more than 80 minutes AGAIN last night) get the rest their tired legs and heads need during games. (Other teams ALWAYS rest their stars, and still win, and the W's must, too.)  Plus, Monta's the only "fast" remnant of last year right now, since Jack and BD are pacing themselves big time now.

Finally, even Adam Lauridsen was close to ecstatic AB's positioning and quickness last night. Playing against the Giants (Curry, Randolph and Lee are a big handful), he outrebounded them combined because he's so athletic -- read, quick -- and he ALWAYS is in position. His motor was running constantly last night as he battled Curry, in particular, fronting him effectively, except for twice early on, and driving him nuts with the activity. 41 minutes at that pace shows he's ready for the bigger role, IF he can maintain consistency.

Moreover, though he certainly got the breaks on his "traffic" rebounds, he made his own luck by being in good position. Fans would do well just to key on him when he's playing well, because he's just so much fun to watch -- and his grasp of the game continues unabated.

Finally, as weak as Jack's been in Qs 1-3, recently, what with ball carelessness and so much darned shooting off the dribble, he's smart enough to realize AB plays MUCH better when you try to get him touches (i.e. PnR's) early on. Last night the connections just weren't working at first, but the result of Jack's attempts was that an "involved" AB just took over on the boards -- with 10 in Q1, and he still had the conditioning to pull down 14 in the second half.

This bumpy ride -- winning (or even losing) close ones to bad teams -- will continue so long as BD and Jack are over-extended every game, but since it's pretty clear Nellie's too stubborn to change on that (I wish Nellie just weren't so sure that BW isn't ready for 10 minutes a game), we might as well just keep our "injury" fingers crossed and hope that the progress of the youngsters Nellie WILL play (i.e. Monta and Andris) continues. And, ideally, if we sign CWebb, that will allow "trickle down" minutes of much needed rest for BD and Jack. (Wouldn't it be fun to see these guys play a heady, up-tempo game ALL 48 minutes, like last year?  Ah yes, I remember it well.)

We'll soon see, because next month, the West is back.
